Where to watch El Classico
Hello all,
Visiting Austin from Atlanta. Anyone know a sports bar/pub where I can watch Barcelona Vs. Real Madrid soccer game? It's this Sunday.
submitted by /u/pranav720 to r/Austin[link] [comments]
Fuck it, my turn to make an expansion post.
ICE BATS LOGO, ADMIRALS LOGO, BEEHIVE IMAGE THING, AND UTAH FLAG ARE PLACEHOLDERS.
So. Let's talk about expansion. Dread it, hate it, run from it all you like, but expansion to 36 teams is coming, sooner or later.
WHY 36?Because multiples of four or six are ideal for things like scheduling and alignment, and the next multiple of four and/or six is 36.
WHERE?Arizona/Utah. This'll be the one that triggers the expansion. Either because Meruelo pulls his head out of his ass, or fans pressure him to relinquish control of the dormant franchise to someone who gives a shit and gets an arena deal done. That triggers the NHL's "Coyote Revival" clause in this whole ordeal, returns hockey to Arizona, and brings the team count to 33. In this scenario, Utah would be treated as the expansion.
Atlanta. While other cities are being scouted, a team is needed in the east to keep a balance with the west. Bettman wants Atlanta, and Atlanta wants the NHL. Sorry to rain on your parade (I don't wanna hear it, Maple Leafs fans). A Thrashers revival is coming.
Austin. A second team in Texas is beyond a no-brainer. Conventional logic says Houston, but if you actually look at things like population growth and competing product, Austin has far more potential. It's smaller, yes, but it's growing at a much faster clip than Houston is, the big tech money is there, it's much closer to big secondary markets (San Antonio, in Austin's case), and unlike Houston, doesn't already have multiple pro teams. MLS is the NHL's only competition in Austin (collegiate sports excluded), whereas the NHL would be competing with the NBA, MLB, NFL, and MLS in Houston. Houston may have the raw population, but Austin has all the other advantages. I'm going Austin; if you'd rather it be Houston, then pretend this is a Houston pick, I do not care. One way or the other, Texas gets a second team.
Milwaukee. This is the wild-card. Arizona/Utah bullshit, Atlanta revival, a second Texas team, those are the slam-dunk predictions. Number 36 is harder to pick, but ultimately this came down to a choice between Milwaukee, WI and Portland, OR. Milwaukee got the nod from me for three reasons: 1) hockey-passionate market, 2) regional rivalries, and 3) how the fuck has the NHL never tried to put a team in Wisconsin before? Hello?
MISSED THE CUTQuebec City. Since I know me giving Atlanta and Arizona their teams back will stoke some rabid Canadian comments, lemme just smack that bear in the ass with a bat. The Nordiques aren't coming back. Period. Players who don't speak French or aren't Quebecois do not want to play in Quebec City. There is no potential to grow the game. It's a smaller market than any of the four who got the nod. Currency exchange rates only serve to dump gasoline on that dumpster fire of an idea. It's not happening. Bury it next to Hartford. Next.
Portland. This one, I considered quite heavily. Ultimately, I've always said the NHL would go to Utah or Portland, but not both. Utah won that debate, so then I had to look at Portland and Milwaukee against one another. I just saw a lot more appeal to the idea of NHL hockey in Wisconsin than in Oregon. If the NHL were to ever expand to 40 teams (please god no), Portland would undoubtedly be first in line to snag a team. Or, they'd snatch a future relocation, just like Utah did now.
Houston. Go back to the part where I explained my Austin pick. See where it says you can pretend it says Houston instead? Keep that in mind.
ALIGNMENTPictured in this post are six divisions of six teams each, as well as a map of them.
WHY SIX DIVISIONS?
Because six division NHL was fucking rad, and anyone who thinks differently is incorrect.
HOW WILL PLAYOFFS WORK?
Top two from each division, two wild cards per conference. Those eight teams per conference are ranked 1-8. There you go.
WHY ARE SOME DIVISIONS WACKY?
Some teams are just more isolated than others. That's how geography works. That said, some trends and patterns in picking these divisions include:
-States. With two exceptions, teams in the same state/province are in the same division. Those exceptions are San Jose and Pennsylvania's duo.
-Preexisting Regional Rivalries. Certain regions have various cities and states that just outright hate each other in every sport (Illinois-Michigan-Wisconsin, NYC-Boston-Philly, Florida-Georgia-Tennessee, Seattle-Vancouver are all good examples). These regional rivalries were prioritized to a point when divisions were aligned, but some (Colorado-Utah, Detroit-Toronto, Toronto-Montreal, etc) were sacrificed to make the divisions make some semblance of sense.
WHAT DID WE LEARN?1) Quebec City isn't happening. Bury it next to Hartford.
2) Houston isn't the only viable market left in Texas, and shouldn't be treated as the only one.
3) I suck ass at circling things.

Bizarre, repetitive car outages just started.
My car Sirius XM radio began cutting out 3-4 days ago. Resumes on its own.
After a while I timed it, and it realized it plays for 60 seconds, cuts out for 8seconds, then plays for 60 seconds again. Exactly. As it resumes, it sometimes displays "Weak Signal" at second 9, then "No Signal" (while playing) at second 10, then plays for the rest of that minute
- Same outage pattern when moving or stationary.
- Happens on all XM channels
- AM/FM CarPlay work fine.
- Hard reset using car reset button has no effect
- Tech support sent refresh to radio with no effect
- No buildings or overhead obstructions nearby.
- Strong signal areas as far as my past 6 years of driving this car in Austin
- No outages other than in tunnels or underpasses in 6 years
- Car is 2018 Genesis G80 Sport
Anyone else seeing patterned outages? Tech support suggests "known problem" and may get back to me...

Run Club Review - Houston - Quarter Crisis Run Club
Running is an individual sport, but is much better when you have the support of a community. r/running provides that community in an online forum, but many running groups and clubs are scattered throughout the US. I plan to submit weekly reviews of different running clubs in different cities over the upcoming weeks - I currently have on the schedule Houston (multiple times), Los Angeles, Denver, Kansas City (multiple times), Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Atlanta (multiple times), Oklahoma City, Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando, and possibly Louisville. I hope you enjoy!
Quarter Crisis Run Club
Metro: Houston, Texas
Meet dates: Thursdays at 6:30 pm
Run date: April 4, 2024
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/quartercrisisrunclub?igsh=MTFzZ2lkcDVlbmo5bg==
Strava: https://strava.app.link/khO2XQYSHIb
Quarter crisis was the first stop of the Houston Run clubs, and it made a good first impression. It is held in the Greater Heights Neighborhood, a small bar district in a somewhat rundown area of northwest Houston, although there is a charm to it. The group meets at a newer bar called Drift, an outdoor run of the mill venue that has good service. I ubered to this location, but it looked like parking was somewhat limited.
It was clear upon arrival that I was at the right spot - the club coordinators had a sign put up at the front of the bar that was hard to miss. The bar is 21 and up, so bring your ID in order to get in! They had water in a cooler for anyone to grab a quick drink beforehand. The crowd had 25-50 people, most of which were younger Houston Transplants, however, plenty of late 20s and 30s individuals were there, too.
One woman was signing-in new runners in on her phone and giving the pitch of the club to a small group, so I awkwardly joined in on the fun. After signing in, the group individuals introduced each other, exchanged typical pleasantries, and discussed our running involvement.
After hanging out for 15 minutes, the coordinators gathered the group outside of the bar for a group picture. The group then departed for the run, splitting to either the north or the south. At the time, I was around a small group of new club goers, and no one seemed to know which direction was the 4 miler or the 2 miler. We chose left, and slowly plodded onward.
The route itself is an out-and-back course, going west from Drift towards White Oaks Bayou, then south on that trail until a midway turnaround. I quickly passed many of the runners, realizing after asking some of the more senior looking runners which run this was that I was on the two mile route. After the halfway point, I turned back and decided to extend the route a bit. I ran this extended route with another runner I met earlier in the day.
Post-run, the group was lively. Each runner gets a free drink token, which is valid for either a karbach or nutrl seltzer. The bar service was great, and the line waiting was minimal. They had multiple non-alcoholic options, including Heineken Zero. If memory serves, they also had a food special. People were hanging out well past when I left, which was around 9:00 pm. People were very friendly and eager to meet as many of the other runners as possible. Some people were there to part, others to socialize, and some to exchange tips on training and running.
For my first exposure to Houston Run clubs, Quarter Crisis was wonderful. They had a nicely sized group, a nice meeting location, plenty of friendly and social people, and a nice route. The group organizers put in the effort to provide water and a free drink from the bar. It was a little difficult to figure which route was the 2 mile vs 4 mile, but having a clear, vocal group leader would solve this confusion. I plan to be back!
