I ran away from home because of my neglectful parents. Now they want to reconcile.

Austin Sport Reddit - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 02:25

Growing up, life was absolute hell for me. While my family appeared perfect from the outside, inside our home, I felt like an introduer inside my parents home. Most of the time, they ignored me. It makes me wonder sometimes if they even noticed I existed. Like when I was in 4th grade, they forgot to pick me up because my little brother got a fever. It wasn't even bad. I was home around 7 that day because I didn't even know where I was going. Thankfully, a neighbor spotted me and brought me home. When I got home, my parents didn't even notice that I was there.

My parents favored my little brother we'll call B, over me, and their constant comparisons left me feeling worthless. B always got better things than I did. From brand new phones to expensive clothing brands, while I got a pathetic birthday card with 20 bucks. Not a party, not even a greeting. What made me realized that I hated my family was when I was punished for allegedly breaking something in the kitchen that I actually didn't break. It was my brother. While they screamed at me, I saw my brother with the nastiest grin. It made me wanna just lash out and cry.

Day after day, I dealt with their bs, feeling like I could never measure up to their standards. I played sports, had good grades, and had medals which my parents never knew abput because they were too busy spoling their little prince. No matter how hard I tried, it seemed like I was always in B's shadow. Constant "Oh B's smarter than you." Or "Why cant you be like B and be a good kid." What they didn't know was that all B was doing is giving them an act not knowing that their perfect little boy was a devil in disguise. I never told them because if I did, I would be called an attention seeker or jealous.

The lack of love and attention took its toll on me, crushing my self esteem. I was a kid for God's sake and this people were on there 40s, berating a teenager telling him that he'll never be get through life and other hurtful words. This people were my parents. If there was a show about the worst parents in the world, they would be multi millionaires.

At 18 I graduated. My parents didn't even attend because they went to Austin to take a vacation with my brother. So that night, I made a decision that I was going to run away. I packed my bags and left home the minute I got back, which was around midnight. I didn't leave any stupid letter like those movies saying "Hey I'm gonna leave you forever," no, none of that. I was determined to escape the toxicity that had consumed my childhood. With only a backpack filled with necessary things and a burning desire for a better life. At that point, being homeless was better than living in that household.

Thankfully, I had a buddy who helped me out through all of this. If it wasn't for him, I would've been out on the streets dead by now. Living with him made me realize that there was hope for me. We both made the decision to join the marines. Joining the Marine Corps was my first step towards redemption. The hard training tested my limits, but I refused to give up. To be honest, thinking about the past life I've been through was enough motivation to work hard. I pushed myself harder than ever before, earning the respect of my fellow Marines. I finally felt like I belonged somewhere. I finally had somewhere I could call home.

After serving my country, I pursued my dream of becoming a mechanic. As a kid, I loved cars and how the machines work. How the engines would power the car and stuff like that. Watching my grandad fix cars like it was tying a shoelace made me so passionate about being a mechanic. The road was tough, filled with obstacles and doubts, but I eventually got through and started working for a friend's family member. I worked tirelessly, and at the end, I saved enough money to buy my own home.

Years passed, and I became a successful mechanic with a thriving career. Turning 31 made me feel old. I started my own business with my other fellow marines, including the buddy that helped me out. Life was finally happening for me, but then Mother Nature said, "Think about that again buddy."

Well, yesterday, out of the blue, I received a text from my pathetic excuse of a dad. He wanted to reconnect again. I asked him where he got my number and told me he got it from my friend's dad. I don't blame my friend's dad. He was a devoted man and loved helping other people. To summarize what we talked about, he basically said that when they came back from their vacation, they realized I was gone when my brother snuck in my room. He was probably to steal money like he always did. He said that they were worried and tried to find me. I didn't fall for that bs and asked him to cut the crap and asked him what he wanted. He basically said that they regretted the way they treated me and wanted to be a family again. It took them 31 years to figure that out? I was so enraged that I wanted to call him and pour my heart out, but I just laughed and texted him, asking why I should forgive them. He didn't answer my question and just asked if we could meet up. I was so intrigued by what he had to say, and I said yes.

The weekend came, and we sat down together. My pathetic brother was there, too. To say it was awkward is beyond a saying. My parents couldn't even look at me in the eye. My dad finally broke the silence and said, "You look so grown. My marine man. I'm so proud of you, son." To say this, I felt like I was going to cry like a baby at that moment, but I knew that they didn't deserve any of my tears after what they put me through as a kid. Then, they started to apologize nonstop for their past mistakes. I could see genuine remorse in their eyes, but as they spoke, I realized that the wounds of my childhood ran deep, and their words couldn't erase the years of pain I went through. I didn't react.

After they apologized, I looked at them and said this before I left. "You're both such a pathetic excuse for parents that I would've rather lived in a cardboard box. It took you 31 years to finally realize that you lost a child. If I can take it away, I will take your titles as parents. And you. I don't even consider you as a brother. All those years, and you still sit there like the sad idiot you are. I hope you grow a pair and realize that you're not the center of the world." They didn't say anything and walked out. My mom and dad were crying while my brother looked all pissy but didn't say anything.

At that moment, I made a decision to let go of the past and move forward without them. Saying what I said was beyond satisfying. All the pain in my chest left faster than the night I left my parents' house. It wasn't easy, but I knew that I deserved better than the empty apologies they offered. As I drove away, I felt a sense of freedom, knowing that I was finally free from the chains of my childhood past.

Though our paths may never cross again, I was content knowing that I had overcome the pain of my childhood and became stronger because of it. I should've thanked and gave them credit for that, at least. The only real family I had was my comrades.

Looking for my next move. Which of these cities would you recommend? Which should I avoid?

Austin Sport Reddit - Sun, 03/17/2024 - 17:14

Context: I (34F) am coming up on a promotion within my company. I have the awesome opportunity to transfer anywhere in the contiguous US where there is a company property. I’m currently living in Nashville (hometown).

Criteria: I’m single, 80k salary, looking to rent and to keep a 1 br/ 1 ba apartment rent under $2k (preferably under $1800). Not really looking to be a homeowner, mostly because I can’t afford it.

Wishes: I’m ready for a real city. I want walkable (I do have a car), lots of options for social activities, a welcoming place for newcomers, a vibrant restaurant/ music/ arts scene. Reasonable COL. Great sports environment. Close enough to outdoor activity options (hiking, kayak). I’m currently a little spoiled with temperate weather. I’m not terrified of winter, but I don’t love it. I’m also currently spoiled with no state income tax, so a good tax structure is certainly something I’m considering.

I’m also sick of the whole nashville schtick - drunk tourists are offending my sensibilities. I want a city that’s not trying to be anything but a city. A city with a real identity, if you will.

Options (in no particular order):

San Diego Houston Austin St. Louis Minneapolis Philly Atlanta Denver Ft. Lauderdale Miami

Or should I just stay in Nashville? Is the grass really greener?

Hi, I'm Austin, 13 black and from Georgia. I'm into sports, reading, music, and one day I want to be a pilot. Ask me anything else, I'll try to answer everyone.

Everyone is welcome and thanks for taking the time to message me.

20 thoughts about Austin, TX

Austin Sport Reddit - Fri, 03/15/2024 - 22:59

I'm a resident of Austin, probably a transient one. As a kind of farewell, I wrote down my thoughts about the city. To be clear, my time here has been brief and distanced and my primary point of comparison is far from typical. Further, where some may iterate their understanding of the world through a rich web of interactions with family, friends, and colleagues, ordering a bowl at Chipotle is about as complex as it gets for me. However, if there's one thing I know from reading enough job descriptions, it's that action is a societally acceptable way to exhibit bias. So rather than hold it all in, here's what I managed to come up with: right, wrong, trivial, or just plain boring.

1 A recurring theme throughout my time in Austin has been finding great businesses with relative ease. To an extent this results from widespread information availability these days, yet it felt abnormal how frequently I'd be positively surprised with service or quality, the cool history of the business, interesting conversations people were having, or how welcoming or laid-back the environment was. My favorite example is a prominent spot for a hobby of mine, one with a special connection to Texas, in fact. It's night and day compared to what I had been accustomed to: the majority of the employees are motivated and talkative, often entering the fray when not working, the fellow patrons are a notch or two less shady-looking, and the ambiance is cozier. The difference is stark, but emblematic of what I've seen in Austin thus far. The opposite of this - places filled with the physicality and cacophony of people on vacation from every nook and cranny in the country and probably the whole world, where garbage is strewn everywhere, the employees look absolutely miserable, a random beatdown appears imminent - have been mercifully few. Even when one expects a disaster, as I always do on South Congress - one of the overcrowded and obnoxious variety, not dirty or unsafe, I should clarify - I'm usually relieved by how agreeable the experience actually is.

2 The most shocking thing about Austin is how attractive members of the opposite sex are. They're everywhere: walking around all sorts of neighborhoods, in the average coffee shop, even on public transportation, which is something to behold in a city where so few use it. A well-adjusted person might smile or say "hello" now and again, so I naturally centered my attention on the following question: does the concentration in space or time of people with a given characteristic tend to vary greatly between cities, countries, etc.? One city could be dense with say, very brainy individuals, but, afraid of getting roughed up for their Tesla money, they only show up in select places and times around town, whereas in another they sort of move about freely. Austin is more like the latter for the subject at hand, I'd say, in that one doesn't have to show up to a club on a Saturday night, visit the beach on a pristine day, or be invited to a party at someone's mansion to see what folks are talking about. Of course, all this blabber is utterly irrelevant, as people are not exactly lining up to meet an individual like myself - I'm just taking in the sights over here.

3 In traversing the city on foot and by bus I spent a fair amount of time around homeless people. What I saw was subtly different than previous experiences. While many were in a condition I had seen before, others had extensive setups, carried a lot of equipment, or had pets. Some, though surely a small minority, almost looked like throwbacks to another era, men who decided to separate from their caravan and go off on their own. During last year's ice storm I overheard parts of a conversation between a spirited group of individuals at Target, one that ranged from where to find a place to sleep that night, to talk of starting a new job, to jovial laughter and moments of drama, of a different kind than losing the second house or cutting Rory out of the will - the kind that happens between people living a very raw existence. Perhaps this isn't unusual; for all I know there are still starving artists squatting in NYC warehouses and such. But the camaraderie of this group and the atmosphere they created that day were not things I'd had the chance to observe from people living in those conditions.

4 Everyone has a sense of Austin's racial demographics, but the ethnic distinctions - as far as I can discern them - are fascinating. It's hard to pin down what can be attributed to ethnicity and what is from subtleties in dress or hairstyle, but given my background, two categories seem to stand out. First, people with what I'd informally call a Southern appearance - these are manly-looking individuals, usually of medium build and sporting prodigious facial hair, for whom the word Scots-Irish reflexively comes to mind, though is not one I'd claim to understand well. Second, more people who, pardon my French, look very white to me, especially in the tonier parts of town, who I'd guess have mostly English or German ancestry. In a few of these areas I would conjecture they are quite heavily concentrated, in contrast to a more generic wealthy neighborhood with a lot of international money and ample diversity, if not in race then at least in ethnicity and religion. In the opposite direction, people of Italian, Jewish or Polish descent seem fewer in number, for example, and whether their share of the population is higher or lower, the Irish cultural presence does not feel that strong. All of this, if only visual, and far from permitting simple demarcations, subtly influences the character of the region to me.

5 That I consider the janky nature of driving in Austin to be among its few negatives is unlikely to surprise. My take is that driving here has the overall feeling of being less smooth than it should be - like this short trip shouldn't require that many turns, or this freeway should be easier to get onto, or the road infrastructure in this area is too complicated, or too limiting. One of the least fun places to be is on one of the region's numerous service roads. I understand normal people have actual business to attend to and aren't caught up in what a road is called, but personally, I find cruising down a "service road" to be a pretty lame experience. It's not even a real road, let alone an Avenue or a Boulevard or something a bit more delightful. But during a typical excursion of measurable distance I will somehow end up traveling these service roads, making one or more U-turns involving said roads, perhaps with a desperate attempt to dodge a toll thrown in at some point, the whole affair often ending with a turn into a remote-looking area, where it appears they just laid down asphalt through somebody's pasture. In fairness, there are redeeming qualities; one is that major north-south thoroughfares like Burnet, which are nice drives when it's quiet, clear out at a reasonable hour - you don't have to wait until 9 or 10 for the traffic to die down. There are scenic drives; a favorite is 2222 out to Four Points, which is spectacular in spots and can briefly remind me of parts of Ventura County. I'd be remiss not to mention my thoughts on traffic and drivers. Perusing various subreddits, it seems just about every city in the country has the worst drivers and/or a uniquely bad road rage problem. Austin does have an irritable amount of traffic at times and I do observe wild and aggressive behavior, though neither is headline-worthy to me. What's amusing is the pattern whereby residents of a growing, mid-size city like Austin will complain how bad traffic is, and are told, with a little big city arrogance, that it's nothing compared to X, Y or Z. It comes across as an unhealthy conversational deadlock; why not try to solve problems, even if they are worse elsewhere?

6 One of the memories that will stick with me longest is the view from the Lamar Blvd Bridge, which I often enjoyed in passing over on the bus. When the sun is just right and you look to the west, it's like an infinity pool of the young and the beautiful, paddling their way to ever more unreachable heights. My favorite place in Austin, though, is probably the Westgate Transit Center: with mysterious drifters and vagabonds passing through, cars whizzing by in all directions, and hills far off in the distance, it was the perfect place to stop for a smoke after a long bus ride on a hot summer day and contemplate life. For the unacquainted, it is thoroughly nonsensical as a general recommendation, its personal importance being a function of specific circumstances during a period in my life. It will be one of the last places I visit before I leave, at which point little semblance of its past meaning will remain, and I'll realize it is time to move on.

7 For better or worse, Austin is neither haunting nor inspiring. There are cities in which the extraordinary lives of a smattering of residents feel like a natural part of the inhabitant's psyche, perhaps alternating between a source of pride and a source of resentment. If there are legends in Austin, they seem to keep their stories to themselves. Of course, that hardly makes Austin unique, as those other cities are the exception. But though I feel at peace in Austin, it isn't on account of it being a boring place. I don't sense that life here is focused solely on the big promotion and the big house, or on raising the youngsters, and neither on faith nor on indulging one's basest sensibilities. There's a romanticism in the Austin air. There may not be as much as you can get elsewhere, but here it's free.

8 When I lived in the south of Austin I loved traveling north as it was a chance to journey to some faraway place. Having been north of the river for a while now, my feelings are mixed. In aesthetics and general atmosphere I'd say the south edges out the north; there is a well-known spot for drinks near Ben White and S Congress that embodies the latter well for me, better than I can explain, anyway. The north wins me over in practicality, having advantages in retail and international cuisine, and more neighborhoods I could envision settling down in. This may be an opportune moment to touch on the city's housing stock, and while there's good and bad here like most anywhere, I have difficulty appreciating the majority of the modern homes springing up all around. "Cheap knockoff" comes to mind, not that I'm presently in the market for either. In many neighborhoods it's also common to have an unsightly McMansion on one side of the street and a normal-looking house on the other. I suppose it aligns with the ideals of freedom and independence - that each person's property is his or hers to do with as they please - but it's a real eyesore.

9 The word local pops up frequently in thinking about Austin. Someone said the actual locals have mostly left town by now, so I will present the observations leading me to that word. With a few exceptions, Austin feels neither very international nor very touristy. It appears to be short on major institutions, ones with national or global influence. I hear little linguistic diversity on a day-to-day basis. Transportation is not especially fluid - bus and rail are not that well-developed, and most seem to consider the road infrastructure mediocre; dislike of crossing from north to south or vice versa is a common sentiment, for instance. I'm not aware of Austin being a major hub for either big business or foreign companies. Collectively, factors like these create a perception in my head that the vast majority of people I encounter, regardless of when they arrived here, are local to the area now, and so too is the primary focus of their lives.

10 Austin has a bit of a cool factor. Limited comparison to a certain city in California is reasonable. It also reminds me of Portland. In my internal vocabulary, untested and thus never needing refinement, I describe them as "culture cities." These are places where the fraction of people sitting around on the weekend watching football is below average, and the fraction taking part in some kind of weird scene, hippie activity or cultural pursuit is above average. In these cities people know movie references, went to all the shows back in the day, and have esoteric or historical knowledge about fashion, cars, comics, gardening and whatnot. I'd say Austin is a sunshine and warm weather version of this - not quite as hardcore, tilted slightly towards vanity - not unlike a blend between Portland and that city in California.

11 It's been refreshing how little unpleasant business I see or hear about in Austin, not only violent crime but the entire gamut of out-of-line behavior. I realize fewer articles may or may not mean fewer events occurring, and it seems to have worsened in recent months, though whether outside the realm of normal variance I cannot say. I understand perspective matters, because if you moved here from Lake Oswego or something, at best I assume you don't notice a change. Those points notwithstanding, for me it rates quite high as far as feeling safe and comfortable, and my judgmental side is almost always at peace - rarely will I drive by a building and wonder what unsavory activities transpire inside, or look at someone and wonder what shady business they're in. So many industries that in my view are of lackluster repute, largely in entertainment or financial services, seem underrepresented at best. And if Austin is a hotbed for mafia activity or other organized crime, that's news to me. But the thing about places nominally attractive enough to draw praise is that the Internet quickly teaches you there are all sorts of evils lurking underneath the surface, while the more of a debacle a place appears, the gentler its souls. Better I leave Austin now, before I find out its dark truth.

12 If I had to characterize Austin and its people in a few words, I might say that they are personable, but not warm and fuzzy. In this regard I propose a faint Southern-ness is being shown. If we picture in our minds a New England city, we might think of young couples holding hands as they walk down tree-lined streets full of boutique shops, or families huddled near the fireplace over the holidays in lively conversation as oldies play in another room. Neither captures the spirit of life in Austin to me. But I think it also displays less of the "life is nasty, brutish, and short" attitudes that can be found - in my opinion - in such cities. The overall tenor in Austin feels more even-keeled: seldom are its people soft or sweet, but they're rarely cold or malicious either. Concerning the city slogan, the Austinites I encounter are thankfully almost never weird in a truly weird way - guy in a van staring at people, guy who looks like he's been in hibernation the last six months. They are sometimes polite or respectful to a point that would be unusual in a larger city, but on the whole I would say they fall in the middle here. The disposition of an Austinite seems geared towards independence ("I do me and you do you").

13 Truth be told, experiencing CapMetro wasn't the loveliest part of my time in Austin. Fortunately, safety was not an issue. I'd say that on any given trip, the likelihood I'd want to get off ASAP at some point was about 20%. I don't know where you're from, but in my book, that's less than half. Once, on a near-empty 803 heading southbound, an individual seated directly behind me was even polite enough to say, "I ain't gonna murder you, sir." Absolutes are a rarity in life, right? Having an ironclad guarantee that I was totally safe made me feel great about the situation for the rest of the ride home. In all seriousness, the buses were serviceable and of enormous aid in exploring the major areas of the city. There was a real sense of adventure in being on foot and public transportation despite the short distances involved, something I hadn't experienced in the US in a long time, and in the unlikely event I stay in Austin, I'll always carry a strange notion of having started "on the streets."

14 Austin's climate has a nice quality of reminding us every now and then what awful weather is, but not staying down for very long. We've had heavy thunderstorms, an ice storm, and general cold, rain or wind sprinkled about, but the weather has a habit of bouncing back quickly, often spectacularly. For me, intense heat is a hardship imposed by nature, but not bad weather - I'll take sunshine over anything else. I enjoyed last summer and was disappointed when it cooled off. There was something I loved about seeing the highs inch up day after day, having to prepare for and fight through the heat, watching the sidewalks and residential streets get quiet, as if nature had issued us all a challenge. When the temperatures dropped, it was like a hardass interviewer suddenly throwing a bunch of softballs: our chances of getting the job may have improved, but that person lost our respect. (Admittedly, subsequent rounds of this battle may prove less entertaining). It still gets too cold in Austin for my liking, but I think the climate is favorable as long as you aren't too heat-averse: you get weather generally characterized by warmth and sunshine along with a degree of seasonal variation, in relatively efficient packages.

15 There has been a pronounced lack of crude, boorish, meathead or pack-like behavior during my days in Austin. This isn't to say Austinites are exceptionally polite or nice. But in some places there can be a kind of rough, crass masculinity one must simply adapt to. I understand Austin to fare pretty well in education and income, and not to say they improve all conduct, but I imagine the likelihood of drunkenly hurling insults and catcalls at random people, or of having a tattoo on one's face, is negatively correlated with holding a four-year degree. As suggested earlier, the city could also be showing a faint Southern character. It reminds me of another region I once lived, technically in a Southern state, which nobody would actually consider part of the South, at least not anymore, but which to me still showed subtle signs of its heritage. What seems most specific to Austin, though, is that many of the elements I think sometimes bring this behavior out - major sports teams, heavy manufacturing, ports, military bases - appear relatively absent. Whatever the causes, it has been one of the more pleasant aspects of living here.

16 In walking around Austin on a still midweek afternoon, say through the side streets of East Austin or Travis Heights, strange words, like magical, enchanted, even medieval, would occasionally come to mind. In the presence of a few Live Oak trees, old, beautiful homes, and seeing an ancient face or two, I could almost delude myself into thinking it was the setting of a modern-day Grimm's fairy tale. Each city I've lived in has its places with a unique sort of beauty, and this too is a bit different. The Live Oak is no valley girl of a tree. It radiates depth, in my opinion. A small but palpable subset of Austin's people have a subtly unfamiliar countenance, as if they come from an era long past or their line has made its home on the land for generations. Again using my internal vocabulary, I think of them as having a "continental" appearance. What cements this curious state of mind is where we are, far from either coast, tucked away in a city and a state where it was not expected. It speaks to what I believe can be lost by experiencing a city with a car first and foremost, as the foregoing, if childlike, reflects real, highly positive experiences, that with near-certainty could not have happened had I not first explored the city on foot.

17 A closely related conceptualization of Austin is that of a fantastical place - a Camelot of sorts - full of cultural richness and natural beauty, surrounded by stark terrain patrolled by heavily armed "barbarians" in monster trucks and paramilitary vehicles (I'm really not sure what those folks on the outskirts of Waco were doing late in the afternoon of January 25th, 2018) with whom it has an uncomfortable relationship. Unlike the above, this is a pure delusion with no concrete realization; I never feel as though I'm in Camelot. But maybe it's reasonable to say that Austin is an oasis. It's a combination of things - being a blue city in a red state, the plentiful color from its shops and street art, the beauty of the river and the structures and parks around it in contrast to neighboring terrain that I must say is a bit dry to look at, along with the "weird" persona, which is not exactly the first trait I would associate Texans with.

18 I often wonder where we are as I move about Austin. The city has its quirks, some of which I have described, but on a day-to-day basis I rarely find anything to be unrecognizable. Yet there is a nagging intuition that I am in a distinct region, one I have minimal experience with. Austin does not feel like the South to me, save in a vague way. It feels even less like the Southwest. We're way out in America, clearly, but "Heartland" doesn't sound quite right - a city like Denver or St. Louis comes to mind far more readily for such a word. And, obvious geographic separation aside, there is a loneliness here, to me at least, that sets Austin apart from the typical Midwestern or Mid-Atlantic city. I don't sense the tradition, the history, the significance of civic life. "Middle of nowhere" is an overstatement, but good or bad, we seem less plugged into the system out here. Over the years I have heard the notion that the people of this state consider themselves Texans first and Americans second, and whether this tends to be true or not, perhaps the rather straightforward answer is that "Texas" is in fact the region we are in, one that is very recognizably American, but also stands on its own.

19 I believe in Austin's future. I trust the longtimers that what I saw could not have been Austin in its highest form. Still, in my opinion the city is a very attractive one, and has apparently retained an edge after enduring a large human influx. I'll leave two claims - without justification but also without representation of expertise - as to why I'd bet this relative advantage will persist. The first is that Austin does not seem to exhibit the most extreme tendencies left-leaning cities can have. The second is that there are homogeneities and cultural forces that I think incentivize people to either leave or to fit in. While I don't believe Austin will fall apart or become a generic big city, many of the subtler frustrations related to culture shifts - people with more money and less personality, corporatization, egotistical behavior - resonate with me. They just feel unsurprising; I'll think to myself, "this is such a great city, and the sun is out so often, how could they not be moving in?" In my head, it's distasteful but inevitable, part of a reality in which nothing is perfect. In spite of that, I hope the thoughts herein have conveyed that I feel a magic here, and I'm guessing that were I to return decades later I would still be willing to echo nearly all of these thoughts, the whimsical ones in particular, even if struggles with more prosaic variables may have continued.

20 In the end, Austin does not feel like home. I yearn to leave, mostly in anticipation of what I hope will follow, but there is a measure of regret. I think highly of this city, and it presents the possibility of an entirely new professional, and perhaps eventually personal, beginning. A key struggle I've faced with age is when, if ever, to turn down an objectively better life in favor of one's past. The reality is that I have probably seen too much for Austin to ever take on a great deal of significance. This reflects the beauty of where I have been, but also the absence of a trait that seems inherent in some: the ability to care only about the life I can create. What will make leaving hardest are the individuals I met, if only superficially, at professionally-oriented events, who were enthusiastic about their field and full of unbridled positivity and goodness, untempered by any pretense or city slickness. There is a version of me far in the future holed up in a tiny apartment, maybe in a distant country, with not a family member or a friend in the world, wondering what might have happened in Austin a half-century ago had I simply been open to building a new life. But what I foresee in Austin, nice as it may be, is interchangeable. So as I close in on the decision to leave knowing such a worst case exists, I hope that if it does materialize I can find peace in having pursued the path I was best-positioned and most interested in traversing - having full awareness that I may have left "the good life" on the table, and accepting that.
