Penpals F36

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 09:07

Hello,

I would like to find a new penpal, somone similar in age to myself. Male or female is fine.

I'm 36 and like to read, go to movies and out to dinner.

I work in an office and any chance to chat on line with someone just to pass the day would be quite welcome.

I'm open to listening too and discussing any interests you have have as well.

I'm just looking for courteousy and polietelness.

I'm also into working out a lot. I've been bodybuilding for 7 years and also do martial arts (taekwondo and judo).

I'm not looking to meet in person or anything like that.

I'd even be open to some kind of roleplaying or story telling idea...

Martial Arts for Kids

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 08:55

Does anyone have any recommendations for a martial arts dojo that has good classes for a 6 year old? Our daughter has been asking about karate classes so we are exploring the options. We are mostly looking to build her self-confidence and not create a trained assassin (although some say it is never too early for career planning).

Exploring the Tranquil Art of Tai Chi: Benefits, Practice, and Symbolism

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 08:54

In a world that often feels like it's moving at a dizzying pace, finding moments of calm and inner peace becomes invaluable. One ancient practice that offers such tranquility is Tai Chi, a graceful form of martial art deeply rooted in Chinese tradition. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Tai Chi boasts a myriad of health benefits, making it a beloved practice worldwide.

A Brief History

Dating back centuries, Tai Chi originated in China as a martial art. Legend has it that it was developed by a Taoist monk who drew inspiration from the slow, flowing movements of animals. Over time, Tai Chi evolved into a holistic practice encompassing physical exercise, meditation, and self-defense techniques.

Benefits of Tai Chi

  1. Improves Balance and Coordination: The slow, deliberate movements of Tai Chi help strengthen muscles and improve proprioception, reducing the risk of falls, especially in older adults.
  2. Enhances Mental Clarity and Focus: Tai Chi promotes mindfulness and relaxation, calming the mind and reducing stress levels. Regular practice can lead to improved concentration and mental clarity.
  3. Boosts Immune Function: Studies have shown that Tai Chi can enhance the immune system, helping the body ward off illness and disease.
  4. Increases Flexibility and Joint Health: Tai Chi's gentle, flowing motions gently stretch and loosen muscles and joints, promoting flexibility and relieving stiffness.
  5. Promotes Emotional Well-being: Through its meditative aspects, Tai Chi fosters a sense of inner peace and emotional balance, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
  6. Supports Cardiovascular Health: While Tai Chi is gentle on the joints, it still provides a cardiovascular workout, improving heart health and circulation.
Practicing Tai Chi Alone

One of the beauties of Tai Chi is that it can be practiced almost anywhere, alone or in a group. Here's a simple routine to get you started:

  1. Warm-up: Begin with gentle stretches to prepare your body for movement.
  2. Stance: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and arms relaxed at your sides.
  3. Begin the Form: Follow a sequence of movements, focusing on smooth transitions and maintaining a relaxed, flowing motion.
  4. Breathe: Coordinate your breath with each movement, inhaling deeply as you expand, and exhaling as you contract.
  5. End with Reflection: Conclude your practice with a few moments of stillness, reflecting on the sensations in your body and the calmness of your mind.
Symbolism in Tai Chi Movements

Each movement in Tai Chi carries symbolic meaning, reflecting aspects of nature, philosophy, and martial arts principles. For example:

  • Cloud Hands: Represents the fluidity of water and the continuous flow of energy.
  • Grasping the Bird's Tail: Symbolizes control, balance, and harmony.
  • White Crane Spreads its Wings: Mimics the graceful movements of a bird in flight, embodying lightness and agility.

Human glow and you can learn how to see it

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 08:26

Anything with temperature emits light. The human body emits it as bioluminescence, which is just too dim for our physical eyes to detect, unless it's at a high level.

One day when activating my Vital energy/Life Force to consciously circulate it and use it to activate my energetic body. My awareness had gotten to a point where it was more on my energetic body than my physical body and that's when I saw myself glow, not only that but everything in the room I was in was glowing!

This taught me that, with the visions of our spirit, we can see the light that we and every thing emits and that the complete conscious control of this Vital energy can be used in ways which are more biological like controlling your temperature, activating endorphins, physical goosebumps and other incredible usages which are more spiritual/supernatural in nature.

A team of Japanese scientists studied this in 2009 https://www.theguardian.com/science/blog/2009/jul/17/human-bioluminescence and found that participants 'glowed' throughout the day, with the brightest spots appearing around the forehead, neck, and cheeks in the late afternoon. The dimmest bioluminescence was recorded late at night.

The Vital energy I was manipulating that night is something that was researched and documented under many names, by different people and cultures, like Bioelectricity, Life force, Prana, Chi, Qi, Runner's High, Euphoria, ASMR, Ecstasy, Orgone, Rapture, Tension, Aura, Mana, Vayus, Nen, Intent, Tummo, Odic force, Kriyas, Pitī, Frisson, Ruah, Spiritual Energy, Secret Fire, The Tingles, on-demand quickening, Voluntary Piloerection, Aether, Chills, Spiritual Chills and many more to be discovered hopefully with your help.

It is apart of everything and within you it is that extremely comfortable Euphoric wave that can most easily be recognized as present while you experience goosebumps/chills from a positive external or internal situations/stimuli such as listening to a song you really like, thinking about a lover, watching a moving movie scene, striving, feeling thankful, praising God, praying, etc.

This is what people experience as Frisson, or as the Runner's High, or as the Vibrational State before an Astral Projection, or as Qi in Taoism and in Martial Arts, or as Prana in Hindu philosophy and during an ASMR session.

You can also learn how to use this technique to experience this, here are three written tutorials to help you specifically learn how to.

P.S. Everyone feels it at certain points in their life, some brush it off while others notice that there is something much deeper going on. Those are exactly the people you can find on r/spiritualchills where they share experiences, knowledge and tips on it.

My Thoughts on Rebirth - a Sorta-Kinda Review (Spoilers)

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 08:03

This is not Spoiler Free. I'm a little late to the party but I just finished Rebirth and have some things on my mind. The FF7 community is the only place where these thoughts can go as I don't have any local friends that play it.

The Good:

  • Honestly, almost everything. I give this 90/100.

  • The Story. I really enjoyed the fresh take on areas. The expanded backround and interactions with the roster and story about how Shinra affects the world was great. They stayed true while adding meaningful changes.

  • The Open World. I generally disdain open world games (ain't nobody got time for that) but this sucked me in. Granted I love FF& and the universe it's built as well as the characters so I'm biased but I liked the gameplay loop. Find tower, do quests, etc. I don't have a lot of time to play games (I set aside regular time for this one though) so I appreciate the fast travel/tower based gameplay it gave. Exploration can be a ton of fun but being a semi-completionist (I don't go plat but I do try and find everything I can within reason) it's nice to have a to-do checklist. Maybe I'd feel different if I were younger or had more time.

  • The side quests. While some were there just to pad the time (thanks chickens), others provided some depth to the game and characters. I like they focused on a character and gave you some insight to their mindset, values, etc.

  • The minigames. Not all of them were great, but all of them were 'good enough'. While I felt the 'hard' mode on some these games was tedious (looking at you 3d brawler and pirate shooter) they offered up a change in pace.

  • The party interaction. I enjoyed how the broke up the party at times forcing you to play as another to change perspective and drive the story forward. I also enjoyed that most of the game everyone was there to experience what was happening. It felt collaborative. I would have enjoyed more side banter but what we got was great.

  • The combat. While I didn't (and don't plan to) do hard mode I find the combat to be quick, fun, and deep. The abilities people have, the roles they play, the materia load outs, it's a lot of fun. While some enemies are a bit bullet spongey (which is typical in an RPG) I never got bored with the combat.

  • The characters themselves. I did the English VO and their work is phenomenal. I want to say there was a standout actor but honestly I think all of them knocked it out of the park. They all gave life to their character and did the best with the script they were given.

The Bad:

  • I'm going to beat a dead horse here but Chadley. I feel like almost every open world question could have been integrated in a more organic way.

    • Towers: Barrett - using the towers transponder he helps identify anomalies out in the world. However it could have been spun to be an Avalanche communications network. Chadley could butt in here to make it also be a regional scanner. You could still find these things organically through exploring but if you want/need a shortcut it's there.
    • Protorelic: Chadley - since so much of the protorelic quests were technology based I think this would be an appropriate way for Chadley to insert himself.
    • Excavation: Red/Nanaki - Using his sense of smell he could desire to help the party by finding rare or unique materials.
    • Fiend Fights: Tifa - Training to be the best in martial arts and having a help others morality she would want to find these fiends to test her prowess and make sure others aren't hurt.
    • Lifestream Crystals: Aerith - Communicating with the planet for unique information seems like much more organic implementation.
    • Summons: Yuffie - Her penchant for wanting to find the strongest materia would do well here. All of the summons were 'gods' of an area and instead of having to fight them in a simulator there could have been fun arena style battles once you analyzed all of their crystals. Since they were talked about at length by Chadley as real beings it would have made more sense.
  • Shinra Manor, Rocket Town, and The City of Ancients. Excuse me what now? You took 3 of the most iconic places in the game and just straight up ignored them?

    • Shinra Manor was wonderfully creepy, had intense enemies, and was fun to explore in the OG. They turned it into a generic lab. They could have kept the lab and had the manor fully explorable. Vincent's introduction was awkward and didn't do justice to his character who more or less had turned his back on Shinra and Co. and now they turned him into a door guard. He could have awoken sensing an ancient, connection to Sephiroth, etc. Anything really outside of what they did. Also no lore in the Sephiroth goes crazy room? So sad.
    • Rocket Town being omitted was understandable as they'll likely make it a region. However the introduction of Cid and the Tiny Bronco was mishandled because of it. Cid's character (so far) has drastically changed and while not a bad character it's not the one I "know". The OG's portrayal of this surly downtrodden captain and a fight with Shinra to get the Bronco was a lot more interesting than what they gave us.
    • City of Ancients not being explorable was a crime. It's like they ran out of time and budget. It was one of the most unique and interesting places in the game despite being pretty short. Instead they just straight up took it away from us.
  • Very nitpicky but Corel Prison. Cloud and Co. got knocked out and kidnapped by a bunch of junkers? C'mon, a couple of days ago they fought Sephiroth and the Fate Arbiter. This could have been handled with more finesse.

  • The ending. This ending is going to haunt me for awhile, and not in a good way. I'm not a fan of the multi-verse as is but I want to accept things as they are. However, I shouldn't have to analyze what should have been the most poignant part of the game. The temple of the ancients was handled beautifully, it was dark, dramatic, it brought a lot of character growth, etc. That is where they gave their sad moment though. The 'Cloud is broken' take on this is fine, but they robbed Aerith of her moment. They robbed us of loathing Sephiroth, up until then he had been an annoyance but not hated with a passion. They robbed us of the characters reactions, and the speech, likely to build it into a 'this is actually what happened' section of part 3. It felt messy, uninspired, and like a cop-out. It took a very 'Everything, Everywhere, All at Once' path and its difficult to decipher and almost feels like they broke their own rules. That said there are now so many alternate timelines/worlds they may not have but it doesn't take away from how confusing it was. I want to feel the end, not analyze it.

    • Side note: Sephiroth and Jenova trying to destroy the multi-verse is not a larger threat than Sephiroth and Jenova trying to destroy the planet. The stakes are the same for the party regardless, they need to protect their planet and survive. It would be different if they had to hop timelines because he was winning and their planet was doomed. If the stakes don't change, don't complicate it.
      • Double side note: They've punked Sephiroth twice now, why would they find him a physical threat anymore? Existential sure, but physically they've got his number. This is the problem with making the main villain your final boss in both games. Yes, I know its just Jenova, the point stands.

Overall though I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to part 3. I'm not someone who hates the changes they're making, I just wish it were more clear and had a path that made sense. Perhaps Part 3 will clear it all up but I have my doubts. In the meantime I'll enjoy the journey with the characters I love.

Are there any redditors who were trained in any martial arts but are afraid to fight back fearing that you'll be stripped off with your rank or you'll be banned from training in martial arts?

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 06:52

I had a training in Taekwondo for atleast a year when I was a kid. Our instructor always remind us not to use the martial arts to become abusive or to bully anyone. He even told us that if he finds out one of his students who used the martial arts in bullying other people, he will nullify our belts and we will not be allowed to train in any Taekwondo gyms in the country.

This fear really made ma afraid to fight back whenever I was bullied by some individuals when I was in elementary and sometimes, even in high school.

I do appreciate how he teaches us to be humble and not to become an abusive practitioners of TKD. It was just my fear of losing the belt or being banned from training to other gyms, that made me tolerate other individuals to bully me.

Fast forward to the present: I just began training in boxing last week.

[murim Manhwa recommendation]

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 06:20

So I recently got into murim Manhwa and I've been reading legend of the northern blade and peerless Dad....so I'm looking for something within that line. No regression or systems or anything of the sort, just pure martial arts and training to get stronger

What Are The Greatest Ground Level Action Movies?

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 05:40

I love all action cinema, but there's something about action movies where it feels like it could actually happen that is far more appealing. There's something quite bizarre about typing 'action movies like Die Hard' on Google and being met with Star Wars or Avengers. There's NOTHING wrong with those classics, but they don't have that 'almost possible' edge that an action flick starring your average Joe in a situation way over their heads might have.

So avoiding sci fi or fantastical action flicks, what are the greatest ground level, almost plausible examples of action cinema?

I suppose the obvious choices would be Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and there are plenty of martial arts movies but where to begin...

T'Challa

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 02:10

Some people don't get it and that's fine. You have new fans who only was introduced to T'Challa in the MCU back in 2016. While many of us before the MCU had our introduction to T'Challa for me it was The Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heros back in 2010. I read the 2005 run by Reginald Hudlin and beyond. Even when Shuri became BP for that short time. T'Challa has been vital to Wakanda we view Wakanda through T'Challa eyes because he is pivotal to the role of Protector of Wakanda. Even in older comics it's T'Challa who is Black Panther and how he fight to protect Wakanda from various villains. Some of his greatest enemies like Namor, Klaw, Doom all tie into that pivotal role as well because of their recurrence always threatening Wakanda in one form or the other. Even on some occasions teaming up with people like Namor in order to protect Wakanda. Thus far T'Challa has only had animated roles and 1 live action portrayal. It is the fans who continously invest into reading about these characters and T'Challa is no different. T'Challa was created back in 1966 debuting in Fantastic Four #52 months before the official Black Panther Party came out. T'Challa was create to go against many of the stereotypes created against Black people. T'Challa has a PhD, versatile in every martial art, a strategies, technology savy, can converse with the best of minds such as Dr. Doom, Tony Stark, Reed Richard's, Beast, Professor X, and Black Bolt. He has saved and help save the world countless times even going as far using the reality stone to rewrite all of reality after defeating God Emperor Doom. So for the MCU to kill off T'Challa because the actor has passed isn't respecting the legacy T'Challa or Chadwick Boseman left behind. Chadwick knew the importance of T'Challa and his role not only to little Black boys but little Black girls as well because the mantle never mattered it's always been about the character beneath the mantle. Anyone can be Spider-Man anyone can be Captain America, anyone can be Black Panther but it's about you the person beneath that mantle. A son cannot be his father a son cannot take up the stories of his father and thus why what they did at the end of Wakanda was pure disrespectful going as far to make T'Challa a hypocrite for doing the same thing his father did at the beginning of the first film. Making Nakia not marry T'Challa made their son a bastard fatherless child and Nakia a single independent Black Woman. All of which see negative stereotypes against Black men, women and children. Those go against what T'Challa and the franchise of Black Panther stood against for many years. The only respectable thing to do is to recast we maybe fans against a giant corruption but it is up to the fans to save T'Challa from that grim faith of being cast to the side.

Which veterans charity to donate to?

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/22/2024 - 02:09

Which smallish charity for serving personnel / veterans is most in need of funds at the moment?

RBL are sitting on 150 mil in the bank while removing employment grants and ending cost of living support so that’s a no.

I was going to donate to REORG but found out they’ve got an employee on 90-100k. (https://register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk/charity-search/-/charity-details/5165748/charity-overview)

Any similar charities for martial arts / fitness / physical activities for veterans? (That don’t make their CEO rich)
