Rivalry renewed: Alberta spring signals another Oilers-Kings playoff showdown

CBC Sports - Fri, 04/19/2024 - 13:55

There are a few sure signs of spring in Alberta. The snow turns to slush, the Canada geese return to the ponds, lakes and streams, and the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings face each other in the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs.

Flyers’ Daniel Briere doesn’t think Ryan Johansen can play hockey again

SportsNets - Fri, 04/19/2024 - 13:41

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere doesn’t expect forward Ryan Johansen to play hockey again.

Briere said that a medical issue kept Johansen from playing the rest of the season. Initially, Briere expected to look for another trade involving Johansen and didn’t see him as part of the Flyers’ future.

“All I can tell you is I don’t expect him to be back. I don’t know, exactly, the situation. We’re dealing on the medical side with him,” Briere said via Jon Bailey of Phily Hockey Now. “The thing for him is getting him back to be able to play at this time. He doesn’t think he can play hockey. I wish I had a better answer for you. We need to get him better to figure out if there’s even a remote chance of him dressing for the organization.”

The Flyers traded defenceman Sean Walker and a 2026 fifth-round selection to the Colorado Avalanche for Johansen and a conditional 2025 first-round selection on March 6. Johansen was then re-assigned to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League after he cleared waivers.

Johansen registered 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points in 63 games with Colorado this season. He is in the seventh season of an eight-year, $64 million contract.

The 31-year-old from Vancouver has 578 career points (202 goals and 376 assists) in 905 games over 13 seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators and Avalanche.

2024 Stanley Cup Playoff Preview: Stars vs. Golden Knights

SportsNets - Fri, 04/19/2024 - 13:30

Let’s rewind about 11 months, shall we?

It’s Game 1 of the 2023 Western Conference final and the Dallas Stars are in Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena furiously pursuing an equalizing goal in the final minutes of the third period. With Jake Oettinger on the bench for an extra attacker, Miro Heiskanen one-times a shot Knights goalie Adin Hill stops, but can’t smother. Joe Pavelski and Roope Hintz fish for the loose puck in the crease and eventually it squirts over to captain Jamie Benn at the side of the net.

3-3 game with 119 seconds to go.

Now flash forward 48 hours to Game 2. This time it’s the road team clinging to a 2-1 advantage in the late stages of the game while Vegas tries to mount a comeback. Stars D-man Ryan Suter is a little too casual with a backhand rim behind his own net and Ivan Barbashev picks it up on the half wall and immediately scoots it down to Jack Eichel in the corner. Eichel, in turn, whizzes a backhand pass to a streaking Jonathan Marchessault in the slot and, bang, the one-timer beats Oettinger and we’re all square with just 2:22 remaining in the third.

The problem for Dallas is, while both squads were guilty of blowing a late lead early in the West final, the same team found the net in each overtime. In fact, Vegas needed a total of just 2:47 of extra time to claim both Games 1 and 2.

First, unlikely hero Brett Howden banked one off Oettinger from behind the net on a disjointed play 1:35 into Game 1’s fourth period. Two nights later, it was Chandler Stephenson snapping home a rebound from an Alec Martinez shot just 1:12 into overtime to give Vegas a 2-0 series lead.

The Knights, of course, went on to win the series in six games, then the Cup five contests later.

But how might things have been different had Dallas been able to steal one — if not two — of those first two clashes on the road?

Jump ahead to the current moment and you can see how there might be some unhealed scar tissue for the Stars as they prepare to face the team that knocked them out of last year’s playoffs in the first round of the 2024 derby.

But things are obviously different now, with Dallas holding home-ice advantage and entering the West draw as the top seed.

Still, does anybody really expect this series to play out like a typical clash between a No. 1 seed and a final team to clear the playoff bar?

Stars Outlook: Is there a club better positioned to compete right now, two years from now and five years from now than Dallas?

The Stars are like a Tex-Mex seven-layer dip, with veteran players, in-their-prime guys and emerging talents all coming together to form something delicious.

And they’ve absolutely got what it takes to win in 2024.

The Stars’ trip to the final four last year provided valuable experience for young guys like Wyatt Johnston and Thomas Harley, who now already have three series’ worth of experience under their belts. Both those players took huge steps as NHL sophomores and will be better positioned to help the Stars win this spring.

And, don’t forget, Dallas went to the final in the 2020 bubble playoffs, giving the likes of Heiskanen and Hintz a close-up look at what it takes to go all the way.

Dallas is an incredibly balanced squad, evidenced by the fact they had a league-best eight guys net at least 20 goals. Basically, name your category — traditional or advanced — and the Stars likely rank in the top 10.

Among active coaches, only Tampa’s Jon Cooper (86) has more post-season wins than Dallas bench boss Pete DeBoer (78).

Golden Knights Outlook: It’s been a trying year for the Golden Knights, who nabbed the Western Conference’s final playoff berth one year after winning a title. The injury bug hit the team hard — lead horses Shea Theodore, Jack Eichel, Mark Stone and Alex Pietrangelo all missed at least 18 contests — but, naturally, that didn’t stop GM Kelly McCrimmon from aggressively pursuing high-end talent ahead of the trade deadline and coming away with a top-four defenceman in Noah Hanifin and a serious top-six forward in Tomas Hertl to go along with support scorer Anthony Mantha.

That created all kinds of carping about LTIR-based salary cap manipulation by the Knights, but Vegas and its supporters couldn’t care less about other fans’ teeth-gnashing.

Hill wound up being the guy to backstop Vegas to the Cup last spring, but he’s got an .882 save percentage in 18 games since the all-star break compared to a .914 mark for Logan Thompson in 15 outings. Maybe, one year after getting hurt during a great rookie campaign, Thompson will get a chance to begin the second season in the crease.

REGULAR SEASON TEAM STATS

Stars X-Factor: Two years ago, Oettinger nearly stole a series against the Calgary Flames when Dallas was a wild card team. Last year, he finished fifth in Vezina voting. For chunks of this season, though, the 25-year-old American struggled to find the best version of himself and spent about a month on the shelf in the dead of winter with a groin injury.

Well, Oettinger is starting to look like the guy who nearly knocked out the Flames in 2022. Since March 20, the Stars starter has a .941 save percentage in 11 outings. If he can carry that form into the big dance, that sound you hear might be the final puzzle piece snapping into place for Dallas.

Golden Knights X-Factor: Will captain Stone, for the second straight April, be ready to go in the playoffs after an extended absence? Last year it was back issues that troubled him and this time out it’s a lacerated spleen that’s had him and his $9.5-million cap hit on the sidelines since Feb. 20. Stone resumed practicing in a non-contact sweater about a week ago, but there is no timetable for his return just yet.

2024 Stanley Cup Playoff Preview: Oilers vs. Kings

SportsNets - Fri, 04/19/2024 - 13:05

If familiarity breeds contempt, this Edmonton OilersLos Angeles Kings series could bring the heat.

Meeting in the first round for the third year in a row, Edmonton and Los Angeles know each other very well and the Kings will be hungry for revenge after bowing out in seven and six games the previous two series.

And while this should be the best edition of the Kings yet, as they’ve added piece by piece to a roster that’s been building up under GM Rob Blake, the Oilers should also be confident that they have this team’s number. Not only have they been triumphant in the recent playoff meetings, but Edmonton also took three of the four regular season games this season — all after they made their coaching change in November.

“We know how this game is going to go tonight,” Leon Draisaitl said ahead of the most recent meeting between these two, a 4-1 Edmonton win on March 28. “We’ve done it so many times over the last two years. We know exactly how this game is going to go, and we’re going to be ready for it.”

This isn’t remotely close to the 1982 series between Edmonton and Los Angeles, when the Oilers finished 48 points clear of the Kings in the regular season and were heavy favourites going in. If Los Angeles takes down the Oilers in 2024 it won’t be an historically immense upset that includes a “Miracle” win along the way.

The difference between the two this year was just five regular season points, and the NHL today is a place of far greater parity and competitive balance than the Wild West of four decades ago. The Kings aren’t out of this before it begins by any means, and have a grinding, defensive game that could end in a surprising result.

But the Oilers have been the NHL’s best team since mid-November, have learned all the supposed “lessons” a young team needs to experience in defeat before breaking through, and with the Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl contracts coming to an end in the next year or two, it’s time for this core to break through all the way to the end.

That’s what they’ve been built for, right?

As we prepare for Game 1 of this year’s Los Angeles-Edmonton series on Monday night, we first dive into our preview.

Oilers Outlook: Back in early November we were starting to wonder if the conversations we’d be having about the Oilers in April would include the possibility of shaking the core to its foundation. Thirteen games into the season Edmonton was 3-9-1, with a dreary .269 points percentage that was better than only the lowly San Jose Sharks who, by the way, the Oilers had already lost to. It was unfathomable to see the Oilers so quickly fall over the cliff but, we thought, if any team could come all the way back from that it was the McDavid-Draisaitl Oilers.

Sure enough, after a coaching change was made on Nov. 12, Edmonton won its first two games and from that time on were the NHL’s best team. Over the past five months, Edmonton is the only NHL team with at least a .700 points percentage (.703) and they even had a shot at the Pacific Division crown until the final week.

So they are all the way back, just as dangerous on offence as ever, and a better defensive team from top to bottom. That includes the evolving superstars at the top recognizing the requirement to be present at both ends, and the bottom end of the roster being fairly well stocked with a mix of grit, defensive awareness, veteran know-how and skating ability.

The time has to be now for this group

Kings Outlook: The past two playoff eliminations at the hands of the Oilers have helped shape this Kings build-up. After going out in a surprising seven games two years ago, they brought in Kevin Fiala for a charge of offence. And after going out again last year in six games, they added Cam Talbot, Pierre-Luc Dubois (with mixed results) and re-signed deadline pickup and shutdown defenceman Vladislav Gavrikov.

Though Blake has overall done a good job building this team up through both the draft and trade market, they haven’t moved up a tier in these three years, finishing with 99, 104 and 99 points. And while this roster is dotted with offensively gifted players such as Fiala, Adrian Kempe, Viktor Arvidsson and an emerging Quinton Byfield, their team style is defined by its defence and suffocating 1-3-1 system.

The Kings allowed an average of 28 shots against per game — fifth-best in the league and just ahead of the Oilers — and according to Natural Stat Trick, allowed the fourth-fewest high-danger chances this season. Their penalty kill, which certainly will be tested by Edmonton’s power play, was the second-best in the league.

“They don’t really make plays; they just rim the puck and sit back all game,” Nikita Zadorov told our Iain MacIntyre after a Kings-Canucks game in March. ‘It’s their goal to don’t play hockey and don’t let the other team play hockey, pretty much.“

It may not be the best TV viewing, but sometimes that style can will a less talented team through in the playoffs. Now, doing that against the Oilers, who have two of the best players in the game and know the Kings well in and out, is going to be a huge task. But, as they say, defence wins championships and the Kings will be determined to bite back on their playoff nemesis.

REGULAR SEASON TEAM STATS

Oilers X-Factor: If you want to be a difference-making forward in the playoffs (and you’re not an alien talent like McDavid) ideally your skill set includes goal-scoring ability, physical play and generally having that “dog in you.” For the Oilers, that could be Evander Kane, the team leader in hits this regular season who also scored 24 times.

You’re just not always confident in which version of Kane you’re getting. Two years ago he scored 13 times in 15 playoff games, but last year followed up with just three in 12 games. And in the second-round series against Vegas, Kane didn’t score at all and only recorded one assist in the final game.

But if the formula against a neutral zone-clogging Kings team is to dump it in, chase it, and hammer Drew Doughty on the attack as often as you can, Kane is exactly the type of player who could lead that charge.

He has been a little injured this season, but Kane can be a gamer capable of stepping up for the Oilers in their biggest moments. While the opposition has to obsess over how to cover McDavid and Draisaitl, opportunity abounds for Kane to be the real X-Factor in this series.

Kings X-Factor: Though the Kings were dismissed in six games by Edmonton last spring, we have to remember that it very nearly could have gone the other way. The Kings had a 2-1 lead in the series and even a 3-0 lead after one period in Game 4 when they could have put the Oilers on their heels. Edmonton nabbed that game in OT and didn’t drop another game in the series.

So what can the Kings get this year that they didn’t last year? If Dubois decides to be a factor that could be it, but we’re more looking at Byfield to be Los Angeles’ X-Factor. The Kings have rightfully been patient with 2020’s second overall pick and were rewarded by his breakout 20-goal, 55-point season season. Playing a tight defensive game in the playoffs is nice and all, but you’ll still need timely goal-scoring to actually be able to win and a young, six-foot-five, 225-pound winger on the up is a great candidate to provide that. However, it is worth pointing out that Byfield doesn’t enter the playoffs on such a high. Though this was his best season yet, Byfield had gone pointless in nine straight games and goalless in 19 before recording one goal and one assist in Thursday’s finale.

Ottawa Senators GM Steve Staios will be looking to improve roster in ‘all areas’

SportsNets - Fri, 04/19/2024 - 12:59

OTTAWA — As a first-year general manager, Steve Staios has proven to be calm, cautious and confident in the direction he wants to take the Ottawa Senators

And that was exactly how Staios presented his case on Friday morning regarding the future progress of the young Senators.

Staios was not going to be pinned down on particulars of certain players, but spoke of the potential for growth with this team and the need to augment both the roster and the maturity level of his group.

Interestingly, Staios said he did not use the exit meetings to inform any pending free agents, restricted or unrestricted, that they would not be returning. It wasn’t the time for that, he said. He also said while he would consider anything, he has no plans to exercise a buyout on any of his current contracts (hello, Travis Hamonic. Easy as she goes, Joonas Korpisalo).

Here are some of the main topics discussed with Ottawa media:

Where did this team go wrong? Personnel or performance?

“I would say it was a little bit of both,” Staios said. “Anytime you go through a situation like this, you know, get on the job for three-and-a-half months (Staios was made president in September but GM on Dec. 31), you try to have an impact on certain areas as much as you can.

“It was a very important year for evaluation and how we’re going to approach moving forward. I just think we want to continue to grow from within. I think there’s massive potential for growth within this group. Now, in saying that, there are areas that need to be addressed. And that’s my job.”

How much change in personnel we can expect during the off-season, Staios wouldn’t say.

“If we’re going to make changes they have to be made with the right intentions — to bring in the right people for the right positions,” Staios said. “And not just with the team. We’re working towards building a culture here  …  that’s got to run right through the organization.”

Consistency the biggest disappointment

This edition of the Senators could be great. And awful. Rarely, there was middle ground.

“Probably the biggest disappointment — we saw that when we played at our potential, that we were a very good team,” Staios said. “And in particular, against some of the contending teams.”

As a longtime former player, Staios understands that missing team targets can be a valuable motivating factor for players.

“As hard as it is, they need to go through these scenarios and situations and years where it is utter disappointment,” Staios said. “Because it’ll only drive them to get better. They have to go through a year where there is conflict and there is turmoil. They need to learn how to deal with that.

“As hard as the season was for us as managers, for our fans and players – it might be the most important year toward building this program, to get a team where we need to get to.”

Staios said he asked players during the exit meetings to do a lot of self-reflecting. Something that doesn’t happen much after winning seasons, he added.

Broadcast schedule

Coach search is ongoing

Staios said he has spoken to “a couple of people” as far as candidates for the vacant head coaching job but is in no rush. Interim head coach Jacques Martin will stay on as a consultant.

“We have a longer list,” Staios said, of his ongoing coach search. “I think making sure that we take the appropriate amount of time to be able to look at everybody that may be available is important. Now, if, as we go through the process and you feel like we have the perfect candidate, then we would move on it. But at this point in time we’re still working through our list.”

Alfredsson not a candidate

Not surprisingly, assistant coach and franchise icon Daniel Alfredsson is not on that list of candidates.

“I had a great conversation with Alfie,” Staios said. “I could say that he’s not going to be in consideration for the head coaching job at this point in time. And I think that is something that we left a little open ended, but I think he does believe that if he does continue on the coaching path, he’ll need a little bit more time.”

The situation with the assistant coaches will fall into place once a head coach is named.

Goaltending move TBD

Ottawa’s goaltending numbers were some of the worst in the league, so this will be an interesting area to watch in the months ahead.

In saying he wasn’t considering any buyout moves at this time, Staios was also hinting that Joonas Korpisalo could return, given that he has four years remaining on his contract (AAV $4 million). That could be a difficult contract to move just because of the term. Anton Forsberg has one year left on a deal with a cap hit of $2.75M.

“I’ve said it before, but I do believe the goaltenders we have are better than their numbers,” Staios said. “So, the question is, do you address that because they had off years? You know, there’s a number of areas that we need to address.”

Will the Senators try to shore up their goaltending with some veteran help? Mads Sogaard remains a good prospect at the AHL level.

Asked specifically about Korpisalo returning, Staios was vague.

“I know that he will perform at a better rate next year,” Staios said. “We’re going to look at all areas.”

Non-committal on Chychrun

On Thursday, we heard a rambling answer from defenceman Jakob Chychrun regarding a long term fit with the Senators. Chychrun has one year left on a contract with an AAV of $4.6M, but is due a $1-million bonus this summer and $6 million in salary next season.

“It’s a tough question,” Chychrun said, after a pause. “I don’t know. I honestly haven’t thought about that. I have one year left and there haven’t been any talks of an extension or anything. I haven’t really gotten my head wrapped around that idea.”

If that was vague, so was the Staios response about locking up Chychrun long term.

“I would say that Jakob Chychrun is a heck of a player,” Staios said. “I think that we saw his talents this year with our group.”

Staios added that this media conference was not the forum for discussing contracts, but added that “we think highly of Jakob Chychrun” and “we’ll look at all areas to see how it all fits.”

With Thomas Chabot and Chychrun playing a similar style of game and both left shots, it makes sense that Chychrun could be on the move. Chabot has four years left at $8M per.

Oddly, Chychrun, with a history of games missed due to injury, played all 82 games this season while Chabot was injured on multiple occasions and played 51 games this season.

The Sens have a dire need for a veteran right-shot defenceman.

Norris expected to return in the fall

Hard luck centre Josh Norris missed most of the season with another shoulder injury and had surgery, his third, in March.

Staios believes Norris will be fully ready to compete by training camp.

“I think Josh is incredibly resilient,” Staios said. “I mean, all our players go through injuries at certain times. And Josh is dealing with another significant one so early in his career. But I think he’s doing very well with it, probably because he’s gone through it already. And he knows the routine. But I expect Josh to be 100 per cent healthy, both physically and mentally and we’ll support him on both sides of it.”

Yes, Norris sure knows the drill at this point.

The problem from the point of view of the organization, Norris was signed to an eight-year contract by previous management in 2022 and has six years left at $7.95M. If they had considered moving on from Norris for the deadline or off-season, that ship has sailed until and unless Norris can prove he can stay healthy.

The 24-year-old was a 35-goal scorer in 2021-22 but has averaged just 45 games played for the Senators in four seasons.

Blue Jays top prospect Ricky Tiedemann has MRI on left elbow

SportsNets - Fri, 04/19/2024 - 12:45

Toronto Blue Jays top pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann underwent an MRI after experiencing left elbow discomfort, Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports.

Tiedemann was placed on the seven-day injured with the Buffalo Bisons earlier this week. The Blue Jays are still awaiting a prognosis from doctors on the injury.

Tiedemann was originally scheduled to make his fourth start of the season on Wednesday based on the team’s game notes, but Andrew Bash ended up starting instead.

Tiedemann’s last start was on April 11.

The 21-year-old left-hander has had a rocky start to his season with Buffalo. Through three starts, he is 0-1 and has a 5.63 ERA, after allowing seven hits, five runs, three home runs and nine walks over eight innings. He has also struck out 10.

A 2021 third-round pick by the Blue Jays, Tiedemann was last year named the MLB’s No. 2 pitching prospect among left-handers.

Flames’ Markstrom on where he expects to play next season: ‘I don’t know’

SportsNets - Fri, 04/19/2024 - 11:56

It was a season to forget for Calgary Flames netminder Jacob Markstrom.

In his fourth season with the Flames, Markstrom struggled to a 23-23-2 record with a 2.78 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

What didn’t make it easy for the netminder was having to face questions about his future in Calgary with the team contemplating a deal involving him ahead of the trade deadline.

“I think it could have been handled a lot different from up top,” Markstrom said when asked by Sportsnet’s Eric Francis about the constant trade rumours surrounding his name back on March 2.

The veteran goaltender has a no-move clause through to the end of his contract, so his future is largely in his hands — he needs to waive that clause in order for the Flames to be able to make a trade.

But when asked at the Flames’ end-of-season media availability where he expected to be next season, Markstrom couldn’t say for certain.

“I don’t know but what I do know is that I love winning hockey games. That’s the competitive side of me, every time I lace up the skates, that’s something I want to accomplish, you want to win hockey games, and I know everyone in that locker room want to win hockey games,” Markstrom said. “That’s pretty much you know, where my head is at right now.

“It’s been a long season and, the playoffs start tomorrow and it’s something you want to be a part of. It’s frustrating, but also you get to go home and spend time with the family. I’ve been away from my son for way too much if you ask my wife. But that’s gonna be nice to spend some time with them.”

When asked again about how the situation was handled by Flames management, Markstrom reiterated that it could’ve been done differently.

“All the rambling could have been not happening. All the talks and all the stuff that was going on throughout the season, starting early in the season until deadline day could have been not happening,” Markstrom said. “Just me focusing on hockey, that’s what I would have appreciated it. Because obviously, I’m still here. So to me, to just be able to focus on the team and, and try to play as good as I can without any distractions that’s what I was mostly pointing at.”

Markstrom said he feels good physically after going through some injuries this season.

When asked if he thought he was going to be moved to the Devils, Markstrom declined to get into any personal conversations he had with management.

He also doesn’t believe his relationship with the front office is strained after what he went through this season.
