Is there more counselling now or was I just an anomaly?
I did 18 years in different Portland, OR, congregations, before I left the nest in 2005. During that time, I had undiagnosed ADHD and did a lot of "quirky" stuff. Stuff that was normal for a teen, but spicy for the Witness. I wore 'revealing' clothing by JW standards, I dyed my hair bright red for a high school sports event, and I didn't socialize much within the congregation. For what it's worth, my dad is disabled and hard to be around (his disability is not what made him an asshole, but it has not helped him socially) and my mom can be very, uh, intense. We were not a popular family to socialize with.
All that said, I don't remember getting counseled a single time. But y'all have so many horror stories! Maybe I have a terrible memory? Maybe my family was just too weird for them to care about? Maybe the JW's reflected Portland's liberal values?
Or are the Witnesses just more controlling since I left in 2005?
What do y'all think?

Timbers LAFC Media Roundup (Or in which Pipe gets some love in Spanish)
Media round up for Timbers LAFC 2-2 draw. Jump to the bottom for a little Spanish-language shout out to Mora
PORTLAND:
Shane Hoffman/Oregonian: Goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau proves ‘he’s a Portland Timber’ in draw against LAFC (Normally paywalled, but I’ve created a gift link). This one is structured differently from standard game recaps. It’s more of a little essay on Crepeau and this match. It’s an interesting and different perspective, so I encourage you to go read the whole thing.
Here’s a bit on the red card:
“The saying, as Portland Timbers coach Phil Neville described, goes a little something like this: Decisions, calls, over the course of a season tend to even themselves out.
“I just hope that maybe (some favorable calls) run into next season as well,” he said, “in terms of the bad luck we feel as if we’ve had.”
That’s when Neville, speaking from the bowels of Providence Park, reached a momentary pause.
“No way was it a red card,” he continued.
The red card in question was dealt, in the 48th minute on Saturday, to Crepeau, a moment of overzealousness from the keeper putting the referees in a bind and ushering in a controversial call.”
Alex Barnes/Stumptown Footy: Portland Timbers 2, LAFC 2 - Instant Reaction
Really nice recap paired with analysis throughout in this piece. Stumptown Footy is consistently excellent, so go sign up for their coverage if you haven’t already.
“The Portland Timbers drew 2-2 with LAFC in a wild match that saw magnificent goals, a game-changing sending-off, and Herculean performances from some of the team’s key players. Evander shone brightly in the first half, registering an assist for Felipe Mora before scoring himself either side of an LAFC equalizer from Mateusz Bogusz that saw the Timbers go into the break 2-1 up. But an unfortunate red card from goalkeeper Max Crepeau against his former club in the 48th minute led directly to another Bogusz goal, and put the Timbers on the back foot and down a man for nearly 50 second half minutes…
…
Kamal Miller said that the result felt like two points dropped at home, and while I agree, it wasn’t for a lack of effort. Once they went down to 10 men, the team bunkered down to a man and earned a valuable point in circumstances many teams would have crumbled under.”
Jeremy Peterman/Cascadia FC: Finally, A Good Performance
Jeremy delivers again with a substance/analysis rich piece that should be read. Go sign up for his substack.
“You guys, I think it’s time that we officially recognize that every LAFC game is a rivalry game. These players certainly seem to think so.
Kamal Miller described this match as “a playoff game.” Both teams showed playoff intensity from the opening whistle. Portland had the first chance when a Jonathan Rodriguez cross found Antony in the box. Antony’s first time finish was off target, but the stage was set. 11 minutes into the match, the Timbers took the lead. Evander sent a killer ball into the box, and Felipe Mora made the run to the ball. It was unclear whether or not he got the final touch past Hugo Lloris, but the goal was credited to him anyways. 10 minutes later, Timothy Tillman put a through ball into Mateusz Bogusz who put the ball past Maxime Crepeau with a very tidy finish to the far post. After LAFC’s equalizer, the Timbers were in danger of conceding again. The following 10-12 minutes saw the Timbers make the same mistake they have been making but not get punished. A point-blank Denis Bouanga chance flying over the bar was the best opportunity LAFC had in the entire game. In the 34th minute, Juan Mosquera sent in a peach of a cross to Evander. The Designated Player did Designated Player things; controlling the ball with his chest before roofing a volley past Lloris for the go-ahead. The Timbers entered halftime with a 2-1 lead. …”

NATIONAL:
Sam Jones/MLS: The Daily Kickoff
“Evander put on a show in the first half with an outstanding assist to Felipe Mora and an even better volley moments later. But LAFC’s Mateusz Bogusz ruined the day for the Timbers with an excellent first-half goal and even better free kick moments after Portland goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau’s red card. LAFC had opportunities to break through against 10-man Portland from there, but couldn’t find a winner.
A road point is a good point for LAFC, but they’ll be bummed to have not capitalized on Crépeau’s red. Getting Bogusz going until a reinforcement can take over as LAFC’s No. 9 is encouraging.
Portland…they are definitely entertaining. Phil Neville would probably like them to be a little less entertaining, but it’s not clear what’s going to fix this defense. They will be living on the edge all season.”

LOS ANGELES:
TREBOR TRACY/Angels on Parade: Points shared in Portland, despite second half advantage: Portland Timbers 2, LAFC 2
“…Just as quick as the chaos came, it seemed to have gone away as the match went on. To the surprsie of nobody, Portland went more defensive and began to clog up the middle of the park making it difficult for the boys to find any room or momentum. Despite the advantage, the team seemed content on taking the point home with them as it wasn’t until the last minutes of the match that we saw them play with any added aggression. Obviously, you never want to put yourselves at risk, but a lot of the second half for LAFC was spent lamenting missed opportunities to really put this one away and complete the comeback.
The chaos returned in added time briefly, as the two sides really went for the win late. Portland came really close to getting a smash and grab win in the final stages of the match, while LAFC had several chances from close range to get the winner, but were unable to get it across the line. The final whistle blew on proceedings and it was a point shared between the two as Portland walked away feeling great about keeping LAFC from pulling away in the second half despite being down a player. For LAFC, its never a bad feeling to get a point on the road, but the search for a win away from LA continues, but more concerningly, the team will need to figure out how to sharpen their teeth to find a lot more bite in attack.”

INTERNATIONAL:
Camila Muñoz/TNT Sports: He's on a roll: Felipe Mora scores for the third game in a row in the MLS (in Spanish) A little love for Felipe Mora in Spanish!
“Felipe Mora activated the scoring mode in the United States. The Chilean striker is having a great moment and this weekend he scored for the third consecutive game in Major League Soccer (MLS).
The former Universidad de Chile was in charge of opening the account for the Portland Timbers, in a match that was played on Saturday and ended in a 2-2 draw against Los Angeles...”

A Way-Too-Early Look at Qualification for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup - as of April 13, 2024
It's mid-April, and I know that we've still got the semifinals of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup still to go, but let's take another (way too early) look at the qualification for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Some notes on conventions:
- I use trigrams for clubs on first reference, even when we all know who we're talking about.
- I'm assuming the rules for qualification in 2025 will be the same as in 2024.
- If you see the term "named berth", this means any berth that is not simply given to the next best club in the standings that isn't already qualified.
Also, as per always - if you have a question, please do not hesitate to ask; I am more than welcome to try and explain things better!
COMPETITIONS THAT HAVE STARTED LigaMX Qualification Rules- Six clubs qualify for Champions Cup through LigaMX.
- Both the 2023 Apertura and 2024 Clausura champions qualify; of these two clubs, the one with the most points between the two tournaments qualifies directly to the Round of 16. The other qualifies for the First Round.
- Note that if either champion wins Leagues Cup, then both champions qualify for the Round of 16.
- Both the 2023 Apertura and 2024 Clausura runners-up qualify for the First Round.
- In addition, the two clubs with the most points between the two tournaments, not already qualified, will qualify for the First Round.
- If any club qualifies through two or more named berths, then an additional club will qualify through points for each excess named berth so held.
- América [MEX] won the 2023 Apertura tournament, defeating Tigres [MEX] in the final, 4-1 on aggregate. Both clubs are qualified.
- Note that after tonight's victory over Toluca [MEX], América is ahead by enough points in the combined table that no other club can catch them; as they won the 2023 Apertura tournament, this guarantees them a berth in the Round of 16.
- Monterrey [MEX] can finish no lower than second amongst clubs not yet qualified for Champions Cup. This means they've clinched a berth in the First Round; this combined with their Concacaf Club Ranking means they're likely to be pre-seeded into the draw.
- Five clubs qualify for Champions Cup through MLS.
- The 2024 MLS Cup champion qualifies directly to the Round of 16.
- Note that if the MLS Cup champion also wins Leagues Cup, the MLS Cup runner-up qualifies directly to the Round of 16.
- Both regular season conference champions qualify for the First Round.
- In addition, the two clubs with the most points in the regular season, not already qualified, shall qualify for the First Round.
- If a club qualifies for Champions Cup through two or more named berths (other than Open Cup champion or Canadian Championship winner), then an additional club with the most points in the regular season, not already qualified, shall qualify for the First Round.
- Note that ties for points are broken by goal difference and then goals scored for the purposes of Champions Cup. Wins, which is the tiebreaker for the MLS Cup playoffs, is not used by Concacaf.
- Note that these berths are not country-locked; this is a relatively new policy starting with qualification for the 2024 tournament.
- One club qualifies for Champions Cup through the Open Cup.
- This berth goes to the club that wins the Open Cup.
- Should the Open Cup champion already qualify for Champions Cup by other means, the Open Cup runner-up qualifies for Champions Cup.
- If both the Open Cup champion and runner-up qualify for Champions Cup by other means, then this berth reverts to the club with the most points in the 2024 MLS season, not already qualified.
- Concacaf reserves the right to accept or reject this berth; I suspect that if one of the remaining MLS reserve clubs wins MLS Cup, their senior club will advance to Champions Cup in their stead (although I don't have any confirmation whatsoever on this!).
- Two clubs qualify for Champions Cup through the CPL.
- The 2024 CPL champion qualifies for the First Round.
- The 2024 CPL shield winner qualifies for the First Round.
- Should a club win both named berths, the second-place club in the table will take a berth instead.
- Three clubs qualify for Champions Cup through the Caribbean Cup.
- The champion of Caribbean Cup qualifies directly to the Round of 16.
- The runner-up and third place club qualify for the First Round.
- Eight berths are reserved for clubs from Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago (two clubs each.)
- Two berths are awarded to the winner and runner-up of the Caribbean Shield, which contains the champions of all other nations in the Caribbean, as well as the next best clubs in the fully-professional countries.
- Six clubs qualify for Champions Cup through the Central American Cup.
- The champion of Central American Cup qualifies directly to the Round of 16.
- The three remaining semifinalists all qualify for the First Round.
- In addition, two play-in winners (amongst losing quarterfinalists) qualify for the First Round.
- Each of the seven Central American nations are awarded berths in the Central American Cup as follows:
- Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama - 3 berths each
- Nicaragua - 2 berths
- Belize - 1 berth
- In addition, two berths are to be awarded based on sporting merit from last year's competition. Precedent dictates that they go to the countries of the two finalists in last year's Central American Cup (which is what they did for last year's tournament - using the 2022 Concacaf League as the basis). This would mean Costa Rica would get a fourth berth and Nicaragua would get a third berth.
- As all countries (apart from Belize) award their first two berths to winners of their domestic leagues' tournaments, the following clubs are known participants in the Central American Cup:
- Costa Rica - Saprissa [CRC], Apertura Champion 2023
- El Salvador - Águila [SLV], Apertura Champion 2023
- Guatemala - Comunicaciones [GUA], Apertura Champion 2023
- Honduras - Olimpia [HON], Apertura Champion 2023
- Nicaragua - Diriangén [NCA], Apertura Champion 2023
- Panama - Independiente [PAN], Clausura Champion 2023
- Belize, only getting one berth, sends the better of their two champions. Altitude [BLZ] won the Opening tournament, but they were fourth in the table, which means it's probably more likely that the winner of the Closing tournament gets the berth.
- Three clubs qualify for Champions Cup through the Leagues Cup.
- The 2024 Leagues Cup champion qualifies directly to the Round of 16.
- The runner-up and third place club qualifies for the First Round.
- América [MEX] and Columbus [USA] are given byes to the knockout stage.
- The rest of the clubs in both LigaMX and MLS have been placed in groups of three, and those groups are:
- Monterrey [MEX], Pumas [MEX], and Austin FC [USA]
- Cincinnati [USA], NYCFC [USA], and Querétaro [MEX]
- Orlando [USA], Atlético San Luis [MEX], and CF Montréal [CAN]
- Chivas [MEX], San Jose [USA], and LA Galaxy [USA]
- St. Louis [USA], Dallas [USA], and Juárez [MEX]
- Tigres [MEX], Puebla [MEX], and Inter Miami [USA]
- Philadelphia [USA], Charlotte [USA], and Cruz Azul [MEX]
- New England [USA], Nashville [USA], and Mazatlán [MEX]
- Toluca [MEX], Sporting KC [USA], and Chicago [USA]
- León [MEX], Portland [USA], and Colorado [USA]
- Seattle [USA], Minnesota [USA], and Necaxa [MEX]
- Pachuca [MEX], NY Red Bulls [USA], and Toronto [CAN]
- Los Angeles FC [USA], Vancouver [CAN], and Tijuana [MEX]
- Houston [USA], Real Salt Lake [USA], and Atlas [MEX]
- Atlanta [USA], Santos Laguna [MEX], and DC United [USA]
- One club qualifies for Champions Cup through the Canadian Championship.
- This berth goes to the club that wins the Canadian Championship.
- Should the Canadian Championship winner already qualify for Champions Cup by other means, the Canadian Championship runner-up qualifies for Champions Cup.
- If both the Canadian Championship winner and runner-up qualify for Champions Cup by other means, then this berth goes to the Canadian Championship semifinalist with the most points in their respective league, not already qualified.
We know the identities of three clubs out of the 27; 24 to go!
Next scheduled update will probably be near the end of the month, once LigaMX finishes their regular season.

Incremental Improvement (Part 34)
Part 1 here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/1biqrzf/incremental_improvement_part_1/
I was assured by no less than a dozen people that things would be fine for me to head off on the hunting trip with Mr. Bethel. I'm actually glad I got to go, but it was hard to click off, my mind running through everything that needed to be done. As well, if I'd bagged out, there wasn't anyone else to go with him, and as capable as Mr. Bethel might be, his disabilities meant that he couldn't be out in the woods alone. His son had already found other things to do for the weekend, so if I leave, then he had no one to go with him.
Reaver was a bit more in the moment, and its identity was growing, so I now was starting to get questions while we rode, Why don't they reforge him so his legs work?
I thought back to it, rather than speaking the question aloud, Humans don't really work like that. The damage is in his spine, so the signals from his brain can't make it to his lower half.
We swung through Jack in the Box. Not really too many pre-dawn options in Portland. Despite being a city, most of Portland shuts down at night. Our Wal-Marts aren't even 24-hour. A few places, like McDonald's and Jack ran 24-hour drive-thrus, but overall, almost the whole city was shut down when we left. Mr. Bethel talked at length about the upcoming trip, and the area we'd be camping out in. He loved this shit, Scouts too. It was only too bad that he hadn't been made Scoutmaster earlier, cause his excitement was infectious, and that could've saved us attrition on boys.
People would say that he was the sort of man that 'demanded respect', but I always felt like the term was inadequate. He demanded very little, he just... exemplified. Hm, wouldn't have gotten that one before the 1%, it had its upswings in my personal life. We drove out of the city, heading sort of vaguely out in the direction of the principal mountain range in Oregon, the Cascades. The one that everyone around the area knew was Mt. Hood, which you could generally see from a lot of places around the city. People think of a Portland as A City, but it really isn't that difficult to get out into the wilderness. Take a wrong turn in sections of the city, and suddenly you're in farm country.
I decided to swing through the Troop site, and Darryl had been at it again. Now, aside from video tutorials and such, Darryl had stacked up other features, such as merit badge tracking, service hour tracking, and... some sort of thing that was grouping the badges based along sympathetic lines, with suggestions on which merit badges could be worked on simultaneously. Okay, for instance, Camping, Backpacking, Bird Study, Cooking, Fishing and Fly Fishing could all be worked on at the same basic time. It was based off of my own merit badge grouping that I'd made up to try and maximize badge collection.
There was now also a Slack element to the site. Darryl had made it so that boys could contact the merit badge counselors through the site, rather than having to specifically create meet-ups with them, or hope they remembered how to use Discord, and arrange time. Instead, you could communicate quickly and effortlessly through the site, and even post video of your completion of tasks. If I was tracking this properly, the boys were devouring new badges now. That wasn't me, though, it was Darryl behind it, getting easier access to the information and ability to complete tasks through a less complicated interface than attempting to do things the traditional way.
Then I noticed the notifications tab, and I had new notifications for the site. Clicking, a bunch of merit badges had been signed off on, and I clicked over to see what it was. All of my citizenship badges had been signed off, along with Communications, Public Health, Public Speaking, and Salesmanship. I didn't remember setting up any of those for work, but I checked the sign-offs... Mr. Tsumpti. He'd joined the site, and signed off on a range of my merit badges, things I had inadvertently completed without considering them. Meanwhile Darryl had closed out my physical badges for the counselors, linking them to my various streams and videos of my workouts and my explaining my workouts, so in came badges like Personal Fitness, Athletics, Cycling, Climbing, and Sports. He'd also put forward my work on our little mobile games for things like Game Design, and others were adding up, like textiles, woodworking and drafting for my making of the tents and designs for the chuck boxes.... Jesus, that next Court of Honor was going to be insane when it came time for badge awards, especially with all the stuff I was working on this weekend. Oh... I was gonna have to spend so much time sewing badges. Pretty sure I just secured Life Scout at the very least. I would need to start considering what my Eagle Scout service project would be.
As we drove along, I did try calling in to Anna to check on thing, "Hey Anna. Was wondering how things are going back in Portland?"
Anna didn't even hesitate, "Everything's being handled, Marcus. I'll talk to you when you get back, and you can tell me all about the trip."
And she hung up. So, I called Dad, "Hey Dad, how're things going on your end?"
Again, a lack of hesitation in response, "Everything's being handled, Marcus. Talk to you when you get back, okay?"
And he hung up. I called Mom, Mackenzie, Miguel, Fred, even Darryl and Brad. Every one of them was a two sentence reply that everything was being handled, and that they'd talk when I got back. Finally, I talked with Merida. Yeah, she's young, but she wheedles, and she's definitely heard stuff. No Luck, "Mom says everything's being handled, Mark. Can I have a baby deer?"
"Hon, if I take a baby deer, their mom'll be really upset."
They were handling me, and wouldn't let me know what was happening in Portland. Finally, I called Aimee, and while she wouldn't talk about Portland stuff either, we did talk for a while. They'd gotten to her, but had left me regular girlfriend conversations. How thoughtful. We did, however, get interrupted by her dad, who wanted to ask me if I would be willing to trade him some steak when I got back. I assured him I would, and hung up. Mr. Bethel finally let out a held laugh, "Reminds me the first time me and the wife left Tom home with the babysitter. Look, you laid out your plan?"
I nodded, "Yes."
"And you trust all of them?"
And there it was, "And I should trust them to get their jobs done for a weekend."
He slapped the steering wheel, "There we go! Now we're cooking with bear grease!"
You know, I've never been sure if he means bear or bare when he says that, and I'd ask, but... there's an outside chance I don't want the answer. So instead, I focused on checking the map, chatting idly while I found the most up to date information on the hunting region we were going to. As hunting season ran along, the deer would change area, avoiding the predators, so with hunting season up and running, it was a matter of tracking to where they were going to be more than where the herds were right this second. Hunters were posting their kills, chatting with each other about where they'd bagged their kills, and arguments over who had the best deer call were legion. Following that track, I started listening to live deer calls. There were also warnings of cougars, with open hunting season the year-round.
Suddenly, we pulled off, and I almost asked, but we were at a Cabela's, so the reason for the stop was pretty obvious. Mr. Bethel wanted me to practice before we got to site, to make sure I had the basics down. We went in, and I had a look around. Much as I respected Mr. Bethel being willing to let me use his firearms, I wanted my own equipment. The range was fully geared out for hunting season, and it was pretty lively. Much as folks tended to write off Oregon as being the ultimate bastion of liberal ideology, we were half-redneck, and it was time to hunt and fish... and apparently, drink copious amounts of beer if the rush on coolers and advertisements were an indicator.
I got a bunch of stuff, mainly centered around hunting versus my usual camping and hiking gear. I need things like camo, though I did opt for the neon-orange stuff. The animals we were hunting didn't really see color, and catching a bullet in the ass was less of an issue if you were clearly visible to the humans with guns. We got bear bangers, and then I paused, cause Reaver was curious about bows. It had been a significant weapon for its entire lifetime, but archery had changed a great deal over the centuries, and fallen out of style for warfare. Instead, they had become their own sport, and were used in hunting as well.
One of sales associates came over. Unlike most stores that tried to have as few people on the floor as possible, Cabela's did have a lot of employees, and at least the woman I was working with was very knowledgeable. She took me through things like draw weight, and what different weights were used for. I ended up opting for a lever action bow package, letting me shift between draw weights, but having a smoother draw curve. That would let me reset based on whatever I was hunting, and be more comfortable on repeated draws. Also, they look really cool. The saleswoman let me know that they did have an archery range on-site, and that I could practice with a few different models to decide what worked best for me.
I would need practice, so yeah, let's do this. For me, practice is a very different concept. I started out on lightest draw, and worked my way up. I had it essentially down, but I bought accoutrements to accompany it, such as targets that I could use for further practice at camp, as well as stuff for repair, maintenance, and arrows for both big and small game.
Next up... I did in fact purchase some firearms. I wanted to close out riflery and shotgun badges, and while I appreciated Mr. Bethel being willing to let me use his, I needed the space with my own weapons to be able to properly use my 1%. There was a short spot of bother with that purchase, until the guy at the counter recognized my name, and I flashed my H.A.A. badge for ID. There are upsides to this, and... okay, look, there's a lot of really cool things in this store, and I'm a fourteen year old with a near-bottomless wallet. I freely admit, the trip got away with me, and the salespeople saw me coming as soon as they realized I wasn't asking anyone if I could purchase things.
I had to get most of the stuff I bought sent back home, and yeah, I would definitely be having a chat with Mom and Dad about some of it, but come on, I've watched Mr. Bethel tool around on that ATV for years, and the one I ordered looked absolutely badass.
Mr. Bethel put out that I needed to stop by the gun range after this, so I could practice with my new string of firearms, and make sure I had it down before we got out into the woods. We hit up the gun range, and I got my shots off. The shotgun was the biggest adjustment, with way more kick to it than the rifle and sidearm, but it wasn't long before I had the firing down. I wasn't sniper-qual level yet, but it was enough for a weekend of hunting and fishing. He also had me reading care and maintenance information for the rest of the ride until I could recite it in my sleep.
We got to our location around mid-afternoon, and after pulling up the van and trailer, it was time to get things ready at the cabin. Bethel had rented out a hunting cabin near enough to the hunting ground we were using. Unfortunately, whomever had been using it before us hadn't bother to replace firewood. Sigh... Let's get to work.

Kings Secure a Postseason berth for the Third Consecutive Year

Against the Calgary Flames, the Los Angeles Kings proved they were worthy of a postseason berth for the third year running.
The Kings had to win on Thursday to save some pride following a difficult game against the Anaheim Ducks the previous evening. With two victories over the Flames, they overcame unfavorable luck to guarantee a postseason berth.
A postseason spotNaturally, the two subpar performances occurred away from home, whereas this one took place there. That’s a huge context for the Kings. The Kings now need to figure out how to replicate their home form from the All-Star break on the road, or perhaps even return to their early-season away form.
The first star of the game was Viktor Arvidsson, who scored two goals and set up Kevin Fiala’s screen for the Kings’ opening goal. On Saturday, the Kings will be back in action as they seek revenge on the Ducks.
Although it’s nice to celebrate winning, the Kings still have a lot of work ahead of them and must continue to put the pedal to the metal during the postseason.
