Overall: Pretty great conference overall. Only downside was it felt a little long at times but there was minimal cringe and rapid game showing. About on par with the Microsoft conference, though the reveals may not have been as big.

Favorite Moments

  • Beyond Good and Evil 2 community creations tie-in sounds really interesting
  • Transference sounds very cool
  • Assassins Creed Odyssey looks pretty good. Very excited to finally have a game set in Ancient Greece.

Let me know if anything is wrong/missing and I will fix it.

Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner spotted with prominent Russian figures in DC

Washington DC Sport Reddit - Mon, 06/11/2018 - 13:03

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 28%. (I'm a bot)

The two biggest items in Washington, D.C., crossed paths on Saturday night as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner posed with the Stanley Cup.

It was a matter of pure coincidence as the president's daughter and son-in-law visited D.C. hotspot Café Milano for a date night while Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin was celebrating with the Stanley Cup.

The Capitals won the Stanley Cup, the NHL's championship trophy, on Thursday.

The Keeper of the Cup Philip Pritchard, who has traveled with the Cup as its overseer for 27 years, posted a photo of the trophy with a casual Ivanka Trump and Kushner.

ABC News' Kenneth Moton happened to be at Cafe Milano, Franco Nuschese's trendy Italian dining spot, when the partying Capitals arrived and filmed the Cup's grand entrance.

Plenty of Twitter users also captured Ovechkin frolicking in a fountain in the nation's capital Saturday, as well.

Latest Recs on Entry Level Road Bikes?

Washington DC Sport Reddit - Mon, 06/11/2018 - 10:22

Your level of experience with cycling - I've been on a 20 year old hybrid for the last year. Lost a good chunk of weight, put in about 1000 miles on it. After 20 miles my butt starts to hurt too much and I'm tired of fighting with the brakes and shifters. Time for something new.

What's your price range, and have you considered second hand? - $1100, preferably new. Bikes on Craigslist in the DC area are massively over-valued by the sellers, and the supply is a lot smaller than you'd think. So I'd just as soon avoid the hassle of haggling and trying to meet up with a stranger.

What's your intention with the bike - commuting, fitness, touring, sport, etc? - Fitness. Like I said, I lost a bunch of weight. I've been maintaining strong for about 6 months now. Would like to push myself to go faster, further, longer etc.

How far will you be riding, and how often? - I'm putting in about 20-100 miles a week depending on how busy my week is. Usually in 10-20 mile chunks. I average between 14-15mph on the crappy old hybrid if I try really hard.

Riding conditions: roads, pavement, trails, single-track, off-road? Flat or hilly? Traffic and weather. - I do most of my riding on a nearby paved biking/hiking trail with a fair number of light hills. I think the max grade is about 6-7% in spots.

I would love to pick up a bike that can do double duty on some light gravel as there are an abundance of beautiful trails according to the salespeople at most of the local shops. But the gravel/cs bikes seem to be way out of my reach price-wise. I also have a smart trainer and Zwift, I put in a lot of miles on that when the days are shorter, the weather is crap, or my time doesn't free up until after dark.

Your location (even approximate) can help other locals familiar with your conditions, too. - Northern Virginia, outside of Washington DC. It'd be really cool to do the whole W&OD trail and back in a day at some point.

Bikes I've considered:

Diamondback Century 3 - $1045 w/Corporate Code

Pros

  • Shimano 105 Drivetrain
  • Mechanical Disk Brakes

Cons

  • Buying something sight unseen
  • Not sure about assembling/maintaining myself
  • I don't care for the color scheme

2016 Felt Z-85 - $900

Pros

  • Shimano 105 Drivetrain
  • It's at a LBS so I could test ride it, this one's 40 miles away so I haven't gone out yet
  • The paint scheme is boring, so maybe people will be less interested in stealing it

Cons

  • I don't know much about Felt, and I couldn't find any reviews on this thing in a quick google search
  • I suppose the rim brakes are a bit of a con, but I honestly don't do much riding in bad weather.

Trek Domane AL3 - $960

Pros

  • I've actually ridden this one at a LBS, I liked it.
  • It looks slick
  • LBS gives 2 years of free maintenance on anything I buy there

Cons

  • Not much bang for your buck component-wise
  • Doesn't seem to be as much bang for your buck here outside of the reliable brand name

Giant Contend-1 - $880

Pros

  • Better price for same groupset as the Domane AL3
  • They don't keep them in stock at the closest LBS, but I could order through them and get the same 2 years of free maintenance
  • Reviews are favorable, r/whichbike rcommended something in the contend line to me last year but I never pulled the trigger

Cons

  • Again, not the greatest bang for your buck component-wise
  • Looks like stock tires are tubeless, is that a pain in the butt?

Bless my poor father who has had to endure 44 years of failure.

Washington DC Sport Reddit - Sat, 06/09/2018 - 13:26

I get that this is a little late, but here goes.

My dad was born in 1974 in Fairfax County, VA. Due to the close proximity of DC, the Capitals were his default team, not to mention that they created the same year he was born. He played hockey growing up for a local team, but never got to see his idols take Lord Stanley's cup.

But this recent Thursday night, at around midnight, when we saw that our precious Washington Capitals had taken the Stanley cup, I saw my dad cry for the first time since his divorce many years ago. This was such a moving moment, and just goes to show you how much of an impact a group of sports players that you'll likely never meet, can have on your life.

Not to mention that we now live in West Virginia, where everyone and their mother is a Pens fan. It's hard to constantly live in their shadow.

But I'd just like to share this little anecdote as a reminder that this is the Capitals first Stanley cup, and my poor Dad has had to go through 44 years of trials.

Love ya dad, bless up.

Edit: spelling

What this Cup means to a 51 year old man

Washington DC Sport Reddit - Fri, 06/08/2018 - 13:59

Woke up feeling glorious. Then I got to thinking of all the heartbreak from seasons past. I feel compelled to discuss.

My first game was ~1977. Any old guys remember Bernie Wolf in the net? Guy Charron? I didn't totally get what was happening, but I liked it. I made the trip to Landover 5-10 games a season as a kid. It was weird watching a game with 5-10,000 players a night. Not a lot of noise in those days.

Remember Abe Pollin threatening to move the team unless 10000 season tickets were bought?

Anyone remember Mike Palmateer? He said the Caps were gonna put the Redskins on page 4. That didn't happen. Yvon Labre? Dennis Maruk? Why didn't Bobby Carpenter become a legend? And ol' Craig Laughlin. Know why he works for the Capitals? Because he was thrown in in the Rod Langway trade. I finally had a car and easier access to Landover. 20 games a year.

Clint Malarchuk anyone? Bengt Gustaffson? Is this mic on?

I probably don't have to remind anyone of the second wave of Caps greatness. Peter Bondra. Dino Ciccarelli. Olie the Goalie. Scot Stevens.

So, finally, in the mid 90s, I have a job and can buy season tickets. Then, in 1998, I got the chance to move to Texas. And I watched the boys reach the finals for the first time ever. But we were run over by a clearly better Red Wings team. I was kicking myself that I couldn't at least see one game. Even if there's a team in Dallas, this ain't a hockey state.

I don't need to remind anyone what came from the dark ages that followed.

A lot of heartbreak over the years. For you young'uns, the heartbreak goes long before Ovie. I found a list of Caps collapses: Not just the losses where we just lost a series. But when we completely fell apart:

1985, first round, New York Islanders No team in NHL history had ever blown a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five series.

1987, first round, New York Islanders We blew a 3-1 series lead.

1992, first round, Pittsburgh Penguins We won the first two and also led 3-1.

1995, first round, Pittsburgh Penguins Lost with a 3-1 series lead

1996, first round, Pittsburgh Penguins Lost with a 2-0 series lead.

2003, first round, Tampa Bay Lightning Lost with a 2-0 series lead.

2009, second round, Pittsburgh Penguins They beat the Rangers in seven after trailing 2-0 and 3-1 in the series. They parlayed that momentum into a 2-0 lead over the Penguins. THis is the year we get the monkey off our back! No.

2010, first round, Montreal Canadiens Won 3 straight to go up 3-1. Lost the series.

2013, first round, New York Rangers Lost it after being up 2-0

2015, second round, New York Rangers 3-1 lead gone.

I don't mean to bum anyone out. But I'm so proud of those guys. Beating Pittsburgh made me happy with this season. I figured getting one monkey off our back made for a good year. But I never imagined this. I knew Tampa was better. Then I figured it would be typical Capitals to lose the Stanley Cup to an expansion team. It just seemed predestined. Especially after the game 1 loss. But they did it. I wish I was in DC to celebrate with all of you.

The players did it, but this was for all of you. Through all the heartbreak each and every one of you persevered. Every year was reason for hope. Even when you told yourself you had given up hope, you hadn't really. Now, forever, the names of Washington heroes, Ovechkin, Holtby, Kuznetsov, will be listed on the greatest trophy in sports.

So enjoy and celebrate your loyalty and your cheers. But maybe raise a toast to some of the old guys. Doug Jarvis. Jim "Ace" Carey, Craig Berube, Sylvain Cote. I can't remember anymore names.Oh, Rick Green and Joe Juneau and Mark Tinordi.

And the legend that is Dale Hunter.

ALLCAPS.

Sorry for this being so long. I got caught up in my memories.

A letter from the Mods.

Washington DC Sport Reddit - Thu, 06/07/2018 - 22:35

Dear r/goldenknights,

I know I haven’t posted much recently outside of the predictions, but that was purely out of superstition. I don’t know where I fucked up, but it’s clearly my fault that we lost the cup.

All jokes aside, on behalf of all of the mods and myself, I want to thank all of the beautiful people on this subreddit. This season was UNREAL, and it wouldn’t have been as good without the Golden Knights faithful.

Now, I know the sub has changed a little bit from its roots, but I can assure you that we are going to be making some changes. While we want this to be a casual environment, there are certainly some things that need to be changed.

I remember the last game of the preseason. It was against the Sharks. Flo, a friend, and I were coming back from a vacation in Utah, and we decided to buy tickets for the pre season game that night. We pretty much showed up in Vegas and headed straight to T Mobile. Now, we didn’t look all that good in the preseason, but we certainly looked better that night than when the pre season first started. Unfortunately, we still lost. We were all walking back to the car talking about how it was going to be a long season, and an even longer building process. We drove home talking about what we could do to get better, and how great we were going to be after a few years.

A few hours later, I got a text from my buddy saying there was an active shooter at Mandalay Bay. I honestly didn’t think much of it at first. Then I got a call from my brother a few minutes later.

“ARE YOU STILL ON THE STRIP?!!” He asked.

“No,” I replied, “I’m at home in bed. What’s up?”

“I JUST GOT A CALL FROM insert name. HE’S AT ROUTE 91, AND SHIT IS GOING DOWN. HE SAID THERE IS A SHOOTER AND PEOPLE WERE DROPPING LIKE FLIES.”

I told him that our family was safe in the house, and there was no need to worry about us. We talked for a second and hung up.

I ran downstairs and woke up my mom.

“MOM. WAKE UP. SHIT IS GOING DOWN AT MANDALAY BAY RIGHT NOW.”

In a very dazed state, she woke up and turned on the news. It read 2 dead and 20 injured.

I ask in the group chat with all my closer friends (about ten of us) and brother if they’re all okay. Pretty much everyone responded, a few saying so and so was at the concert, but they are okay. My brother chimed in.

“I have a buddy who works at the coroner’s office saying over 50 dead, and over 400 injured.”

I couldn’t believe this was happening in my backyard. This is a city where you’re supposed to have fun, not get shot n stuff for no reason.

I watched the news until about 2am waiting for Sheriff Lombardo’s updates. I eventually knocked out.

The next morning, I woke up to the news of 58 dead, over 500 injured. It was surreal. Like, there’s no way it was happening.

My mom turned to me and said, “Did you know a Quinton Robins?”

“I met him like once or twice. Went to high school with him. Why?” I replied.

“He was killed in the shooting last night.”

My stomach dropped. Somebody that I barely knew was killed, and it hit me so hard. It was at that moment when I realized the gravity of what happened.

I was just at a Golden Knights game the night before, and here my city was having the heart ripped out of it. What the hell was going on?

That week was hard. Choked back tears for most of it, just waiting for the Knights first game. Something to get the thoughts of the tragedy out of my head.

The day had come. The boys were in Dallas. Dallas is a decent team. We’ll see how we stack up.

WE WON. HOLY SHIT, FIRST EVER GAME.

Arizona? NO WAY, WE WON AGAIN.

October 10, 2017. First ever home game. One of the most emotional games in the history of sports. Apart from the third, we blew the Yotes out of the water.

We tore up the league, sometimes with our fourth string goalie. The atmosphere in the arena? Unmatchable. Record broken here. Another record broken there. What the hell were we watching? There’s no way it’s THIS easy.

The end of May rolls around. We really aren’t playing well, but we clinched a playoff spot. I kept telling people not to worry, we’ll do fine in the playoffs.

We finally figured out that we’re playing the Kings in the first round, and boy I wanted to beat them SO bad. My former team that I learned to hate, and I wanted Doughty to eat his words.

Swept em.

Sharks? Okay. I’m happy we beat the Kings, but we HAVE to beat the Sharks. Gotta establish dominance in the division.

4-2

The Jets? Okay. I’m scared. They’re good. Oh, we gentlemen swept them? Wow.

The Stanley Cup Final. Is this for fucking real?

Now here we are. This magical season ends with no cup, and a devastating 4-1 series loss. Boy, am I happy for Ovi and Washington DC, but it really sucks the story ended with no cup.

Though, one thing that we can all realize is that we still witnessed the most amazing story in sports: The Caps made it past the second round.

No no, seriously. An expansion team, a bunch of misfits, made it to the Stanley Cup final. Along the way, they united a city and found a new place to call home. They transformed an untraditional market, in the middle of the desert, into a hockey town.

And through all of that long, probably unnecessarily long story that I just told, there’s nobody else other than the people on this subreddit that I would have rather experienced it with.

I love you all. I love Vegas. I love this team. There’s no other way I’d want it. Well, maybe with a cup in the end, but beggars can’t be choosers. We’re all in this together, and that’s shown from the very beginning of this season, starting with October the first.

Myself and the rest of the moderators want to thank each and every one of you for such a spectacular season. I can’t wait to do it again.

CupIn2

Vegas Strong. Al-fucking-ways.

/- Thank you

The Mods. (Especially the best one, u/sirebell)

CMV:The Washington Redskins Football Team should be forced to change there name.

Washington DC Sport Reddit - Thu, 06/07/2018 - 14:52

The Washington Redskins Football Team should be forced to change their name to something that does not reference any person’s skin color. Calling a Native American a redskin is akin to saying injun or savage. This is actually what the name is supposed to make you think of. The Washington Redskins are savage, ferocious, they are redskins.

In the year 2018, this should not be an acceptable name of a sports team. I am from the DC metro area, and a fan of this team myself. But, it makes me embaressed to cheer for such an abhorrent name. They need to change it, and i will buy any merch they sell, and even start going to games.

If you can convince me the name does not mean any of the things i listed and rather means something not to do with the native american skin color slurs from the past, i am open to changing
