Damian Lillard’s record-setting first half leads Bucks over Pacers in Game 1

MILWAUKEE — Damian Lillard’s sensational start ensured the Milwaukee Bucks would fare just fine without Giannis Antetokounmpo in their playoff opener.

Lillard scored all 35 of his points before halftime and the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Indiana Pacers 109-94 on Sunday while Antetokounmpo watched from the bench.

“I don’t think that it’s all on me but I know that I’ve got to be a little bit more aggressive and I’ve got to step forward a little bit more assertively,” Lillard said. “In the playoffs … it’s about setting a tone. We’re going to see this team a lot of times, and you want to establish yourself, especially on your home floor. That was just my mentality, to come out and try to set the tone.”

The Bucks needed Lillard to step up without Antetokounmpo, whose return date is uncertain as he deals with a strained left calf that also caused him to miss Milwaukee’s final three regular-season games. Game 2 of the playoff series is Tuesday in Milwaukee.

Lillard came through by setting a Bucks record for points in either half of a playoff game. He didn’t score at all and attempted only five shots in the second half as the Pacers focused on slowing him down, but the damage was done by that point.

“He’s got that prizefighter-like mentality,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said. “It’s almost like he’s training for the fight. When the bell rings, he seems to be ready.”

This was Lillard’s first postseason game since 2021. He spent his first 11 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before the Bucks acquired him in a trade.

“The last two years, not being in the playoffs, it sucked,” Lillard said. “Early vacations. Last year, I went to Coachella. I ain’t never been able to go to Coachella. It’s playing in the playoffs every year. Just having that long summer, it was like, man, I was over that.”

Pascal Siakam had 36 points and 13 rebounds for the Pacers, who hadn’t scored fewer than 99 points in the regular season while averaging a league-high 123.3 points per game. The Pacers shot 8 of 39 from 3-point range.

Indiana, which had won four of its five regular-season meetings with the Bucks, is making its first playoff appearance since 2020. The Pacers haven’t advanced beyond the opening round since 2014.

“It’s easy to just say we missed shots and now we’re nervous or whatever,” said Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton, who had nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds. “Whatever you all are going to run with, it doesn’t matter. I just feel like we missed shots, at the end of the day. The ball wasn’t hopping. And they made shots in the first half and that kind of dug us a hole.”

Khris Middleton had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, while Bobby Portis added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Lillard had 19 points in the opening period, the highest first-quarter point total by any player in a playoff opener since at least 1997. He had the highest first-half point total for any player in a postseason contest since Kevin Durant had 38 at the break for the Golden State Warriors in a 2019 first-round game with the Los Angeles Clippers.

He then got some help from his teammates while taking a well-deserved breather. Milwaukee outscored Indiana 14-3 while Lillard was on the bench for nearly the first five minutes of the second quarter.

Once Lillard returned, he picked up right where he’d left off. He sank a 3-pointer while getting fouled and completed a four-point play to extend Milwaukee’s lead to 65-35. The Bucks were ahead 69-42 at halftime.

“The first half was embarrassing,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “No excuses. We’ve simply got to come out better. It was ugly, and we all own it.”

Indiana closed the third quarter with nine straight points to get Milwaukee’s lead down to 83-71, but the Bucks regained control.

Jae Crowder and Malik Beasley made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to start an 8-0 run that extended Milwaukee’s lead to 99-77 with 8:10 left. Milwaukee stayed ahead by at least 14 the rest of the way.

NEW YORK — Luis Gil struck out a career-high nine over 5 2/3 innings for his first major league win in three years, and New York took advantage of Adam Civale’s control problems in a four-run fifth to beat Tampa Bay.

Civale walked three straight batters with two outs in the fifth, then gave up Alex Verdugo’s two-run single and RBI singles by Jose Trevino and Oswaldo Cabrera — all in a three-pitch span — as New York spurted ahead 5-1. The Yankees had been 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position heading into the inning.

New York (15-7) improved to 6-1 in series this season.

Gil (1-1) allowed an unearned run caused by his own throwing error on a pickoff try and the first of his two balks. Making his 11th big league start, the 25-year-old right-hander gave up two hits and three walks.

His only previous win was with six shutout innings in his debut against Baltimore on Aug. 3, 2021. He tore his ulnar collateral ligament while pitching for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 18, 2022, and had Tommy John surgery six days later.

PHILADELPHIA — Trea Turner stole home, Kyle Schwarber hit a solo shot and Aaron Nola struck out seven in eight innings to help the Philadelphia Phillies complete a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with an 8-2 win on Sunday.

Bryce Harper added a sacrifice fly and an RBI single on his best friend the Phillies Phanatic’s birthday to complete an 8-2 homestand for the Phillies. After splitting a four-game series with Pittsburgh, the Phillies fattened their record with series sweeps of Colorado and the White Sox.

Beating the White Sox was pretty much a given on a windy, chilly day in Philly.

The big question — how long would it take for the White Sox to get a hit?

Spencer Turnbull carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and Zack Wheeler took one into the eighth in consecutive starts to open the series. The Phillies rotation entered the game having gone 31 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, their longest streak since 1969.

WASHINGTON — Left-hander Mitchell Parker threw seven shutout innings, and Luis Garcia Jr. had three singles and two RBIs and Washington beat Houston.

The Nationals have won three of their past four series after starting the season 2-6.

After allowing two runs over five innings last Monday in his major league debut, a 6-4 win over the L.A. Dodgers, Parker (2-0) was even more effective in his second major league start, allowing three hits, striking out eight and walking none, throwing 57 of his 73 pitches for strikes.

Parker mixed his 85-87 mph splitter, 81-82 mph curveball and 92 mph four-seam fastball. He struck out Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña a combined four times. Dylan Floro and Matt Barnes each added a scoreless inning for Washington.

CLEVELAND — Josh Naylor delivered a clutch, three-run double in the seventh inning as Cleveland continued their best start in 25 years with a win over Oakland to complete a three-game sweep.

With the Guardians up 3-2, Naylor, who celebrated a two-run homer on Saturday by bashing the top of his helmet with his bat before rounding the bases, doubled with the bases loaded off T.J. McFarland.

Naylor is batting .406 (13 of 32) with 14 RBIs in nine home games.

The surprising Guardians have won four straight, seven of eight and improved the AL’s best record to 16-6. This is the club’s best start since Cleveland had the same mark through 22 games in 1999.

PITTSBURGH — Wilyer Abreu had three hits and drove in two runs and Boston beat Pittsburgh to complete a three-game sweep.

Abreu’s RBI single off Martín Pérez (1-1) in the third gave the Red Sox the lead for good. He added another RBI single in the sixth as Boston continued its strong play away from Fenway Park.

Reese McGuire added a pinch-hit two-run single for the Red Sox, who improved to 10-3 on the road so far this season. Justin Slaten (1-0) worked two scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory as the Red Sox’s road ERA dropped to 1.45.

Ke’Bryan Hayes had two of Pittsburgh’s seven hits and drove in the Pirates’ only run with a first-inning sacrifice fly. Pittsburgh has dropped six straight to fall to .500 (11-11) for the first time this season.

The Pirates have scored just nine runs during their slide and did little against five Red Sox pitchers. Pittsburgh didn’t help itself with a couple of baserunning mistakes to take away scoring opportunities. Hayes and Jack Suwinski were both thrown out at second — Hayes in the fourth, Suwinski in the sixth — trying to grab an extra base in hopes of sparking a struggling offence.

CINCINNATI — The Reds’ bullpen picked up after starting pitcher Frankie Montas left the game in the first inning and Cincinnati shut out Los Angeles to sweep the series.

Montas was hit by a line drive by Taylor Ward and left the game with a bruised right forearm after 16 pitches. Brent Suter allowed four hits in 3 1/3 innings. Emilio Pagan (2-1) earned the win after allowing one hit in two innings.

Jose Soriano (0-3) did not allow a hit until there was one out in the sixth inning. Elly De La Cruz singled. Nick Martini reached on an error by Luis Rengifo. Christian Encarnacion-Strand doubled and Jeimer Candelario hit a triple to put the Reds up 3-0.

Soriano finished with three unearned runs on three hits in six innings, a career high, and struck out a career-high seven batters.

Alexis Diaz earned his fourth straight save in five tries.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Colton Cowser and Jordan Westburg hit back-to-back homers for Baltimore off Kansas City starter Seth Lugo, who had not allowed a home run since last September, and Baltimore went on to beat Kansas City.

Cole Irvin (1-1) scattered four hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings for Baltimore. He stranded a runner on third in the first inning and another at second base in the fifth while earning his first win since beating the Royals on June 10, 2023.

Lugo (3-1) had pushed his streak of not allowing a homer to 41 1/3 innings before Cowser sent an 0-1 pitch soaring into the right-field fountains leading off the third. Westburg followed two pitches later with his drive into the left-field seats.

Cowser’s splash came one day after he mistakenly threw Craig Kimbrell’s 422nd save ball into the fountains while celebrating the Orioles’ 9-7 win. The save had tied Kimbrell for seventh on the career list, so Cowser ran back to the field after the game and managed to fish the ball out of the water with the help of some stadium staff.

Lugo, who had allowed three runs in 25 2/3 innings, was dinged for four and nine hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings Sunday.

CHICAGO — Jesús Sánchez hit a massive solo homer and an RBI single, helping Miami beat Chicago.

Sánchez, Luis Arraez, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Nick Fortes each had two hits as Miami salvaged a split of the four-game series. The last-place Marlins are 6-8 since they opened the season with nine consecutive losses.

Miami right-hander Edward Cabrera (1-0) pitched five innings of three-run ball in his second start. He struck out seven and walked three.

Chicago had won six of eight. Nico Hoerner had three hits and two RBIs for the Cubs, and Mike Tauchman had two hits and scored twice.

SAN DIEGO — Joe Musgrove pitched seven innings for the first time since July 4 and Xander Bogaerts homered for San Diego, who beat Toronto to avoid a three-game sweep.

Musgrove improved to 4-0 against the Blue Jays, who picked him in the first round of the 2011 draft. The big right-hander from suburban El Cajon allowed solo homers to Davis Schneider and Ernie Clement but otherwise pitched well enough to improve to 3-2. He allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three.

The Padres snapped a three-game losing streak and prevented the Blue Jays from clinching their first sweep of the season.

Robert Suarez pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Bogaerts, who has struggled since signing as a free agent before the 2023 season, homered off Chris Bassitt (2-3) leading off the third to tie the game at 2. His only other homer this year was on April 9 against the Chicago Cubs. He had gone eight games without an extra-base hit.

Bogaerts drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth and Fernando Tatis Jr. followed with a sacrifice fly.

DENVER — Ezequiel Tovar and Ryan McMahon each hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Colorado over Seattle Mariners in the first game of a doubleheader.

A bases-loaded triple by J.P. Crawford keyed a six-run second inning that propelled Seattle past Colorado for a doubleheader split.

Cal Raleigh added a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the nightcap and finished the game with three RBIs. Seby Zavala had three hits and scored twice for Seattle, which has won five of six.

Emerson Hancock (2-2) allowed two runs — one earned — and four hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Julio Rodríguez went 4 for 9 on the day for the Mariners to give him five straight multi-hit games.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO — Right-hander Slade Cecconi held San Francisco to two runs in six innings in his 2024 debut, and Gabriel Moreno hit a two-run, go-ahead single in the sixth inning to lead Arizona to a victory.

Cecconi (1-0) started in place of an injured Merrill Kelly to help the Diamondbacks earn a split of the four-game series. He was recalled from Triple-A Reno to make his fifth career start to replace Kelly, who was scratched with a shoulder injury.

The Giants did not have a hit against Cecconi until Thairo Estrada had an infield single with two outs in the fifth. Mike Yastrzemski then homered over the right-field wall to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.

Moreno hit his go-ahead single in the sixth off left-hander Erik Miller (0-1) to give Arizona a 3-2 lead.

Arizona scored twice in the ninth to extend its lead to 5-2, during which Giants manager Bob Melvin and third base coach Matt Williams were ejected for yelling at plate umpire Stu Scheurwater over a foul-tip call.

RANGERS 6, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA — Andrew Knizner hit a three-run homer, Adolis García added a two-run shot and Texas avoided a three-game sweep with a victory over Atlanta.

Evan Carter also went deep as the reigning World Series champions erased an early 3-0 deficit and stopped Atlanta’s six-game winning streak. Michael Lorenzen (2-0) recovered from a rocky start, giving up three runs and three hits with seven strikeouts in six innings.

David Robertson worked 1 2/3 innings in relief and Kirby Yates got four outs for his third save.

Marcell Ozuna launched his major league-leading ninth homer for the Braves, a three-run shot off Lorenzen in the first inning.

Atlanta rookie Darius Vines (1-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings while striking out six and walking two.

Playoff Takeaways: Panthers capitalize on Lightning’s slow start to claim Game 1

Sunday’s series opener between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning was a tale of two games. There was the first 15 minutes — a one-sided start that saw Florida own pretty much every area of the ice — and then there was the 45 that followed, which welcomed Tampa Bay into the fray.

And based on the latter, we’ve got ourselves quite the series ahead.

While Florida’s 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon was well contested, with the action going right down to the wire, you could argue that it was those first 15 minutes that made all the difference.

Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said as much post-game.

“They’re at home. It’s Game 1. Crowd’s pumped up. They had all this energy. Give them tons of credit — they went into a game plan, and we abandoned ours before it even started,” he told reporters. “(We) weathered the storm for 12, 13 minutes, or whatever it was, and then we played. And that’s the problem.”

Cooper pointed to the miniscule margin of error that comes with post-season hockey. As cliché as it is to say that every minute counts, it really does. While the Panthers played a full 60 minutes, Cooper said everything his team did was in “a 45-minute game” that followed.

“They got the lead in that first 15 minutes, and then we played,” said Cooper. “I’ll take our chances if we can play like we did in the last part.”

The Panthers dominated the first frame, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it by looking at the score. After Sam Reinhart got Florida on the board just over six minutes into the period, Tampa Bay’s offence woke up in time for Brandon Hagel to tie things up 10 minutes later. A scoreless, tight-checking gridlock of a second period gave way to a goal early in the third as perennial playoff performer Carter Verhaeghe gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

Another NHL cliché: there’s no time for second-guessing in the post-season. That includes all the ‘what ifs’ that arise following Cooper’s decision to pull Andrei Vasilevskiy with three minutes remaining in what was a 2-1 game to prompt a final push from the Lightning.

Matthew Tkachuk scored an empty-net insurance marker with two minutes remaining in the game, which wound up being the game-winner after Lightning captain Steven Stamkos cut Florida’s two-goal lead in half with a power-play marker with just eight seconds to go in regulation.

Too little too late from the Lightning, but still strong enough to send a message ahead of their next meeting on Tuesday night.

Panthers’ power play shows signs of life

The Florida Panthers finished the regular season with the NHL’s eighth-ranked power play (operating at 23.5 per cent), but that doesn’t tell the whole story. As strong as the club has been all year, including during their late-season bid for the division’s top spot, their power-play unit struggled down the stretch, scoring just four goals on 51 opportunities over the final 16 games of the season. And considering they’re matching up against a Tampa Bay team boasting the best PP in the league and a penalty kill that’s almost just as powerful, special teams were expected to factor into this series in a big way.

And early in the third period, they finally did, with Florida’s PP showing signs of life. Less than a minute into the third frame, with Lightning forward Nick Paul opening the period in the penalty box after earning a minor holding call late in the second, Verhaeghe broke a 1-1 tie with the man advantage.

Unfortunately for Verhaeghe, it wasn’t the only power-play goal he factored into — the Panthers forward was called for cross-checking late in regulation, with Lightning captain Steven Stamkos reminding everyone in the Sunshine State just how lethal Tampa Bay’s PP unit is.

All told, Florida went one-for-three on the power play while Tampa Bay made good on one of two opportunities.

Rempe brings boost of energy as Rangers top Capitals

With every punch thrown during his early days in New York this season, 21-year-old Matt Rempe solidified his standing as an instant fan favourite, with many pointing to his physical game as the missing piece on a Rangers squad boasting more skill than sandpaper.

Still, despite a solid following among Rangers faithful, his spot in the lineup heading into Game 1 of New York’s first-round series against the Washington Capitals was far from a sure thing.

It’s a safe bet we’ll see him again in Game 2, however, thanks to his series-opening goal in his post-season debut Sunday afternoon, which sparked a three-goal surge in the second period to send the matchup from scoreless to lop-sided in just a few shifts. He brought the energy to his intermission interview, too, all smiles as he reflected on the “unreal” moment:

Rempe wasn’t the only fourth liner to contribute on offence in New York’s eventual 4-1 victory. Less than two minutes after Artemi Panarin made the score 2-0, Jimmy Vesey got in on the action, showing everyone that while the Rangers’ superstars are always dangerous, it’s the club’s depth that might just prove to be the difference.

Shesterkin’s sensational streak continues

Of course, as much as the fourth line shone Sunday against Washington, the Rangers’ win also featured the usual suspects doing what they do best.

No Rangers playoff victory is complete without a goal from Playoff Chris Kreider, who at this point is just padding his franchise record for most post-season markers. Expect that number to keep growing.

And then there’s the man in the blue paint, Igor Shesterkin, whose 20 saves in the victory continued an impressive streak on home ice: Sunday marked his 10th straight home playoff game in which he’s allowed just two or fewer goals.

Ovechkin held without a shot as Capitals’ offensive struggles continue

Save for a lone goal scored by defenceman Martin Fehervary, the Capitals couldn’t muster up much at all against the Rangers. That’s not a huge surprise, considering Washington’s well-documented offensive struggles all season long, making its sprint to the post-season all the more impressive.

This, however, is a surprise: Of the 21 shots Shesterkin faced, none came off the stick of No. 8.

Alex Ovechkin was held without a single shot on goal in a playoff game for just the fourth time in his career. You have to go back to 2018, a game against Pittsburgh, to find the last time he finished a post-season game without firing a puck on net.

Miles Russell, 15, shoots 14 under at Korn Ferry Tour event

Miles Russell wasn’t content with simply becoming the youngest player in history to make a cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event.

The 15-year-old American amateur did much better than that, climbing into a tie for 20th at 14 under with a final-round score of 4-under 66 on Sunday at the LECOM Suncoast Classic in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

The top-25 finish means Russell gets a spot in next week’s Korn Ferry event — the Veritek Bank Championship in Arlington, Texas.

Russell becomes the youngest player to finish in a top 25 in a PGA-sanctioned event.

“It was an awesome week. It was a blast,” Russell said, per the PGA Tour. “Especially for my first one, you may get a couple weird looks, like, ‘Who’s the little kid on the range?’ But, you know, everybody was so nice and so helpful with everything.

“I just try to kind of go with flow and take it as it comes to me, and I’m trying to just stay cool. I was able to hit some good shots in the right moments.”

The Florida resident isn’t eligible to join the PGA Tour’s feeder circuit as a member until 2027, but he certainly put the golf world on notice this week.

Last fall, Russell became the youngest winner of the AJGA Boys Junior Player of the Year award, overtaking a record held by one Tiger Woods. Russell’s year included a seven-stroke win at the Junior PGA Championship and a three-stroke triumph at the Junior Players.

Sweden’s Tim Widing finished 20 under and won a three-man playoff to take the Suncoast Classic title. Myles Creighton of Digby, N.S. was the top Canadian, tying for eighth at 17 under.

Rare defensive miscues help prevent Blue Jays from completing first series sweep

SAN DIEGO – A key driver for the Toronto Blue Jays during their run of four straight series wins over the past couple of weeks has been the dominant work of their starting rotation. Ten times in the past 12 games their starters have allowed one run or less and even Sunday, when Chris Bassitt allowed four runs, three earned, in 5.1 innings of a 6-3 loss to the San Diego Padres, they were very much left in a position to win.

Expecting the rotation to remain that dominant all season long is unrealistic, of course, but consistent quality from the starters is very much going to be the bedrock of any success the Blue Jays experience this season. Their typically elite defence is fundamental to that, as well, with some rare miscues and nine walks in the finale before a Petco Park crowd of 44,527 preventing them from collecting their first series sweep of the season.

“We’ve got a lot of trust in those guys, obviously it was a really good turn through,” manager John Schneider said of his starters. “It’s a strength of ours, really. The difference today, didn’t get the lead, albeit we took it back 2-1 after the (first), but they got some big hits in big spots and we didn’t really help ourselves with the walks. But with us, when our starters are going really well, like they have been, it lines us up for success.”

Another factor working against them Sunday was the ongoing spread of an illness that had already been working its way through the clubhouse for at least the past week. Bassitt is among the latest wave of players and coaches to be hit – “You got about 20 guys on our team sick, I’m one of them, personally,” he said – and looked sapped after grinding through his outing.

“We’re passing around a good sinus infection. It’s not fun,” he said,” describing his approach on the mound as “not try to do too much. Try to recover as much I can in between innings. Didn’t really do a good job of it. It is what it is.”

The game’s first run scored when Manny Machado’s single to right field slipped under George Springer’s glove and rolled far enough for Jake Cronenworth to score from first. Then in the decisive two-run sixth, a catcher’s interference call on Danny Jansen with the bases loaded pushed across the second run after a Trevor Richards bases-loaded walk broke a 2-2 tie.

The Padres tacked on two more in the eighth on Xander Bogaerts’ bases-loaded walk and Fernando Tatis Jr.’s sacrifice fly off Nate Pearson – the first runs of the season off the right-hander – and it was too much for the Blue Jays to overcome.

“You walk in two runs and make a couple errors, it’s tough to beat a good team,” said Schneider. “Still a good series. Obviously didn’t end the way we wanted today. It starts on the mound for us every day and walks came back on us.”

Davis Schneider’s solo shot in the second tied the game 1-1, Ernie Clement’s solo shot in the third – on a shoulder-high fastball from Joe Musgrove – put them ahead and Schneider’s run-scoring groundout in the seventh pulled the Blue Jays within a run at 4-3.

“It’s a good thing that I was locked into my plan,” Clement said of hammering a pitch 4.18 feet off the ground over the wall in left. “I wanted to get him up and I saw a fastball up and that’s what I was looking for. To put a good swing on that is huge.”

Not huge is that the Blue Jays had just two at-bats with men in scoring position all game and they’ll need more production against the Kansas City Royals, who they visit for four beginning Monday.

Runs remain at a premium for them, with their per-game average of 3.91 runs ranking in the bottom third of the majors, well below the big-league average of 4.49.

Even while winning four straight series, they’ve scored a maximum of five runs in their 10 victories, which has meant their starters and relievers have again had little margin of error to work with.

That’s also meant they’ve needed to be opportunistic and better in other facets of the game to squeeze out whatever production they can find.

To that end, what’s so far been improved baserunning has helped. In Saturday’s 5-2 win, for instance, Isiah Kiner-Falefa made a clever read on a wild pitch that squirted out just past the dirt cutout and scooted home with a run that made it 4-0, while Daulton Varsho set up an insurance run in the ninth with a key stolen base.

Even with Bo Bichette getting caught stealing Sunday, jumping for second before Musgrove went into his windup, the Blue Jays have converted 14 of 17 attempts this year, an 83 per cent success rate well above last year’s 74 per cent. As well, their five outs on the bases are third fewest in the majors, compared to the 63 they had last year, which was fifth-most.

Cleaning that up was one point of emphasis during internal off-season discussions, said first base coach Mark Budzinski, who oversees the baserunning, and has been a frequent talking point from spring training onwards.

The message to players has been “running the bases aggressively but intelligently,” said Budzinski, “knowing the situation, the outs, the inning, how we’re playing, who we’ve got on base and then make it more of a focus and talk about it every day. We have a report I post every day for the guys to keep it in front of us and make sure we’re keeping it top of mind.”

As a player, Budzinski feels he probably wasn’t aggressive enough as a baserunner with decent speed and feels at times as a minor-league manager, he may have pushed the envelope too far at times. In trying to help the Blue Jays find the right balance, he’s “showing video, showing plays of our team and as well as other teams, good decisions and bad decisions and why, just trying to educate each other on our thoughts and feelings on it.”

“There’s not always agreement between a player and a coach on it,” he added. “Sometimes they’re like, ‘I think that’s the right play right there.’ And we may say, ‘Well, based on the situation, we don’t want you to run in that spot, we don’t want you trying to attack the extra base there.’ Or like (Friday), Schneider moved up on a turf ball that he ended up getting thrown out on, we were up four runs, that’s worth a shot right there. Keep doing that. Different situation, if we’re down four runs there, maybe not.”

Done well enough over time, “hopefully it’s more runs,” said Budzinski, “because last year we made a lot of outs on the bases. We had some trouble scoring and I think that was a big part of it. Hopefully we can run a little more intelligently, take advantage of situations where we can, but hopefully that leads to more runs. That’s the goal. More runs, more wins.”

Especially with the starting pitching the Blue Jays have.

Their rotation is seventh in the majors with a 3.80 earned-run average and Bassitt believes there’s still upside, saying “I still think we’re not really in our grove yet.”

“Obviously (Yusei) Kikuchi and (Jose) Berrios are a little bit of the outliers there, but overall, I still think we can improve a lot more (on) what we’re doing,” he added. “We’re giving our team a chance to win every game, so I’m happy with that.”

As are the Blue Jays, series sweep or not.

Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander named finalist for NBA’s MVP award

Oklahoma City Thunder star and Hamilton native Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named one of three finalists for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award, the league announced Sunday.

The 25-year-old is up against the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic and Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic for the league’s most prestigious hardware. Gilgeous-Alexander is hoping to become the second Canadian ever to win the award and first since Steve Nash did it in back-to-back seasons between 2004-06.

A two-time All-Star, Gilgeous-Alexander is having arguably one of the best seasons ever by someone from north of the border, as he’s averaged 30.1 points (third in the NBA), 5.5 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. His biggest area of growth has come on the defensive end as he’s turned into an elite two-way player, averaging two steals (tied-first in the NBA) and 0.9 blocks a game.

He’s led the Thunder to 57 wins and the No. 1 seed in the West, their best record in a decade and the first time they’ve topped the conference since 2013. Oklahoma City is set to take on the New Orleans Pelicans in round one of the NBA Playoffs, Gilgeous-Alexander’s first post-season appearance as a bonafide No. 1 option.

Nelly Korda wins fifth LGPA event in a row, Brooke Henderson ties for third

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Nelly Korda couldn’t have imagined the incredible run she’s put together this season while at home recovering from a blood clot that required surgery in 2022.

“Because obviously then I was just more scared for my health,” she said. “Competing was kind of on the back seat. I was not thinking about competing at all. But I think all of the sad times and the health scares that I have gone through have made me who I am today.”

Fully healthy now, Korda is seemingly unstoppable. The world’s No. 1 player hasn’t lost a tournament since January, and now she’s a two-time major champion.

Korda etched her name in the LPGA Tour record books Sunday, winning her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory in the Chevron Championship.

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at the Women’s PGA Championship.

“It’s been an amazing feeling these past couple weeks knowing that I can go on this stretch and that if I stay in my bubble and I keep golf in a sense simple and let it flow, then I can have so, so much fun out here,” she said.

Korda shot a 3-under 69 in the final to outlast Maja Stark of Sweden, who birdied her final two holes to shoot 69 and pull within one. Korda stayed aggressive on the par-5 18th, easily clearing the lake in front of the green and setting up an easy up-and-down birdie for a two-shot victory.

She had a four-day total of 13-under 275 at Carlton Woods.

Korda nearly aced the par-3 17th, with her tee shot hitting the hole and hopping in the air before settling within 10 feet. She settled for par to maintain her two-shot lead.

Korda wowed the large crowd, which followed her throughout the day, by chipping into the wind for birdie on the par-4 10th hole to take a four-stroke lead. The 25-year-old raised her club above her head with one hand and pumped her fist after the ball rolled into the hole.

Her parents — former Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda and Regina Rajchrtova — beamed as she was presented with the trophy.

“She had a difficult ’22 and ’23 in certain ways,” Petr Korda said. “She did not win a tournament in ’23 and some things probably made her humble and (she) put a lot of work into where she is right now. Without the work and commitment, she would not be here. So seeing that, I’m very happy.”

Korda’s older sister, Jessica, is a six-time LPGA winner who’s taking a break from golf after giving birth to her first child.

Korda took home $1.2 million from a purse of $7.9 million, a significant increase from last year’s purse of $5.2 million. That brings her season earnings to $2,424,216 and her career earnings to $11,361,489.

Winners had been jumping into Poppie’s Pond off the 18th green at Mission Hills since 1988, and Korda became the second to do it in Texas by doing a cannonball off a small dock into brown-tinged water. World No. 2 Lilia Vu was first to jump into the pond here after her win last season. Vu withdrew from this year’s tournament before the first round after experiencing “severe discomfort” in her back during warmups.

While still shivering from her post-win plunge Sunday, Korda confirmed she’ll be competing in the JM Eagle LA Championship next week in Los Angeles. She was then asked about the possibility of becoming the first to ever win six straight LPGA tournaments.

“I’m going to enjoy this right now and then I’ll think about that,” she said. “But yeah, it’s been an amazing time. Hopefully keep the streak alive. But I’ve been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row, too.”

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is on a similar tear, on his way to a fourth victory in five starts until rain interrupted the final round of the RBC Heritage. He couldn’t help but check in on Korda.

“I actually was checking the scores this afternoon when we were in the rain delay,” he said. “I’m extremely happy for her and proud of her. That’s some pretty special stuff. It’s been a treat to watch.”

Korda entered the last round one shot off the lead after completing the last seven holes of the weather-delayed third round early Sunday morning on a windy and unseasonably cool day. She was wiped out after her big win because she’d been up since 4 a.m. to prepare for the end of the third round.

She birdied two of her first four holes to take the lead. Lauren Coughlin birdied Nos. 13 and 14 to get within two strokes, but bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes put her four behind. She shot a final-round 68 to finish tied for third with Brooke Henderson.

Coughlin got emotional when discussing her best finish in a major.

“It’s really cool to see all of the work that I’ve put in, especially with my putting and my short game, and putting specifically showed off this week, as well,” she said.

Henderson was tied with Korda for second to start the last round after she shot a 64 in the third round to set a scoring record for the tournament since its move from Mission Hills, California, to Texas last year. But the Canadian, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, also faltered early in the final round, with a bogey and a double bogey in the first four holes.

Haeran Ryu of South Korea shot a bogey-free 67 to enter the final round leading Korda by one. But the 2023 Rookie of the Year bogeyed the first two holes of the fourth round. She closed with a 74 and finished fifth.

Eighteen-year-old amateur Jasmine Koo provided an unlikely highlight on the 18th hole. Her second shot bounced off the advertising board in the water and back into play. She ended up with a birdie to shoot 71.

Jimmy Vesey, Artemi Panarin lead Rangers to win over Capitals in Game 1

NEW YORK — Matt Rempe helped the New York Rangers get their postseason off to a strong start.

Rempe and Artemi Panarin scored 33 seconds apart in the second period, and the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Rangers beat the Washington Capitals 4-1 on Sunday in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series.

Jimmy Vesey had a goal and an assist, Chris Kreider also scored, Barclay Goodrow had two assists for the Rangers. Igor Shesterkin finished with 20 saves.

“It’s obviously good to get that first one,” said New York’s Peter Laviolette, who became the first coach in NHL history to lead six different teams to the Stanley Cup playoffs. “There’s things we could have done better. … You need to win one at a time, so for that the result was good.”

The Rangers, seeking their first championship in 30 years, won their third straight and 11th in the last 14 games.

Martin Fehervary scored and Charlie Lindgren stopped 27 shots for the Capitals, who had won three straight and four of their last five games to earn the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

“We’ve got to do a way better job offensively,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said. “It’s no secret. We struggled all year but we’ve got to find ways to create more on the interior. We’ve got to skate out of pressure, we’ve got to keep pucks off the yellow. We continually ran pucks around.”

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night.

Leading 3-1 after two periods, the Rangers outshot the Capitals 15-6 in the third.

Kreider made it 4-1 as he put a backhander past Lindgren on a breakaway from the right side with 3:43 left in the third period. It was his 41st postseason goal, extending his franchise record.

The Rangers bottled up Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, who had no shots on goal. He was held without a shot only five times in 79 games during the season.

“We all understand it’s the playoffs,” Ovechkin said. “Forget about this one and move forward.”

After a scoreless first period in which the teams combined for 11 shots on goal, there were four goals in the second period.

Rempe got the Rangers on the scoreboard first, sweeping in the puck from the left side off a deflection across the front of the net by Vesey at 4:17.

Rempe, the 21-year-old rookie who has garnered a lot of attention for his physical play and fights, drew chants of “Rem-pe! Rem-pe!” from the crowd.

“That was a big goal to put energy in the building, maybe because it was him, too, put a little more extra juice in the building,” Laviolette said. “And then be able to get another one right after that. That was a turning point in the game.”

Panarin, who had a career-high 49 goals during the regular season, made it 2-0 just 33 seconds later at 4:50 as he fired a shot past Lindgren from the right circle. Alexis Lafreniere knocked defenseman Vincent Iorio off the puck and shoulder-first into the boards. Lafreniere then send the puck to Trocheck, who sent across to Panarin for the goal.

Iorio went to the dressing room after the play and did not return. Carbery did not have an update on his status.

“I don’t think it was that, it was close, it was borderline,” he said of the hit. “I feel bad for him because he put himself in a tough spot. Probably needs to move the puck quicker there and get it out of his hands. Then he hangs on to it, wobbles it.”

Vesey made it 3-0 as he got the puck off a draw in the right circle and fired it past Lindgren at 6:23. Rempe in front knocked down Beck Malenstyn to give Vesey some space for his shot.

“(Rempe) scoring sent the fans crazy, and we scored two more goals in the next few minutes,” Vesey said. “He definitely gets the crowd into the game and as the team with home-ice advantage, you’re going to try to feed off that energy in the crowd.”

Fehervary deflected a shot by Tom Wilson off his foot and past Shesterkin to get the Capitals on the scoreboard at 7:31.

Rempe was whistled for charging to give the Capitals a power play 2:07 into the game. The Capitals managed just one shot on goal during the advantage and had several shots blocked. They also went a 14:09 stretch in the period without a shot on goal as the Rangers had an 11-7 advantage.

The Rangers improved to 21-9 in the openers of a seven-game series at home.

Harden, Zubac lead Leonard-less Clippers to win over Doncic, Mavericks in playoff opener

LOS ANGELES — James Harden spent the season developing a pick-and-roll chemistry with big man Ivica Zubac. The future Hall of Famer, in his first season in Los Angeles, is schooling the longest-tenured Clipper.

It paid off in their playoff series opener.

Harden scored 28 points in his playoff debut for the Clippers, Zubac had a playoff-career high 20 points to go with 15 rebounds, and Los Angeles defeated Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks 109-97 Sunday.

“Just a perfect game for a big,” said Harden, who, like Paul George, is seeking his first NBA championship.

Game 2 is Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena.

“We are going against some Hall of Famers,” Dallas’ Kyrie Irving said. “I don’t even know if we even are favourites in this series and so we just have to pay attention to what we can control.”

Coach Tyronn Lue called the game’s first play for Zubac, and the Clippers were off to a dominating start.

“When I’m out there, I’m going to try to punish them in the post,” said Zubac, in his sixth season with the team. “I want to be the best version I can be for this team.”

Harden hit 6-of-11 3-pointers and had eight assists. George finished with 22 points after the Mavs slowed him in the first half. The Clippers outdid the Mavs at their own 3-point game, making 18 of 36 from long range to 10 of 33 for Dallas.

“We’re going to be very good any time Zu is playing at that level,” George said.

The Clippers had five players in double figures without Kawhi Leonard. The two-time NBA Finals MVP hasn’t played since March 31 because of inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee. Russell Westbrook finished with 13 points and fellow reserve guard Norman Powell played 30 minutes.

“We obviously want Kawhi back when he’s ready,” George said. “The luxury we have is just experience with James, myself, Russ, Norm’s been in big playoff battles.”

The teams were meeting in the playoffs for the third time in five years, with the Clippers having won both previous series.

“Their mentality was next man up and they did very well, very well,” Doncic said. “We just got to stay focused 48 minutes.”

Doncic led the Mavs with 33 points and 13 rebounds. Irving had 31 points and seven rebounds, but the Mavs got little from their supporting cast.

“Luka was finding the open guy. We just didn’t shoot well,” Mavs coach Jason Kidd said. “I like the way we played in the second half and we got to build on that.”

Trailing by 22, the Mavs outscored the Clippers 10-2 to close within 102-88. Dallas was helped by a technical on Zubac and a flagrant-1 foul for his subsequent actions after a second free throw attempt by Doncic. In all, it cost the Clippers four points after Doncic scored when the Mavs retained possession.

“I didn’t have a lot of technicals and flagrants in my life,” Zubac said. “I don’t know how I got both on the same play.”

Harden hit another 3-pointer, George scored four in a row and the Clippers closed out the win.

“Very important to start off on the right note,” George said. “You want to take care of business at home.”

The Mavs revived themselves in the third, when Doncic and Irving (20 points) combined for 29 of their 34 points. But they still trailed 87-64 going into the fourth. George’s 3-pointer put the Clippers ahead by 29, their largest lead.

“In the second half that is how we should play the whole game, so we got to learn from that,” Doncic said.

The Clippers dominated the first half, leading 56-30 at the break. It was the fewest points they’ve allowed in either half of a playoff game and a first-half playoff low for the Mavs, who were outscored 22-8 in the second quarter when they made just two field goals.

“In a playoff game, man, scoring eight points feels like forever,” Irving said. “It started with how we started off the second quarter and allowed them to feel very comfortable in that first quarter and there was carryover. We got to give them credit for hitting shots and doing the right thing. Capitalizing off our turnovers and our lack of physicality.”

Harden scored 20 points in the half, including nine in a row in the second quarter. He made his first four 3s.

Doncic and Irving were a combined 5 of 19 from the floor in the half. Doncic had all of his 11 in the first quarter; Irving had two of his six points in the second.

Terance Mann and Amir Coffey, who started in place of Leonard, led a Clippers defence that held Dallas to 9 of 40 field-goal shooting and 2 of 18 from 3-point range in the half.
