economical/affordable to run interesting daily driver under £10k

London Sport News - Sun, 03/24/2024 - 03:19

Recently exchanged my Volvo C30 2.0 for a 5 cylinder V40 that shat itself and needed a new steering rack within 2 weeks of ownership, managed to get a full refund from the dealer but now I have no car.

Whilst the 5 cylinder sounded amazing and was quick, I think maybe a newer than 2013 car could be sensible so as to avoid issues.

I have a top budget of £10k and the criteria are as follows: ULEZ compliant, petrol, reliable/cheap to repair (BMW, Merc and Audi out the window), NOT a Volvo, suitable for driving in London and suitable for weekends away/long drives outside London, cheap(ish) to insure (as a 27 year old even with 10 years no claims Polo’s and Fiestas might be out the window), interesting to drive! I am super into cars but don’t know if I can afford to run anything guzzling fuel, even the 5 cylinder got through petrol quickly and found myself filling up a lot, 5 doors preferable to cart the in-laws around but not essential.

My current list of cars to look at:

Mini: 3 door, 5 door. Peugeot 208 (2019 onwards) Suzuki Swift Sport Skoda Fabia (boring) Skoda Octavia (would rather vRS but only high mileage available) SEAT Leon Honestly Mazda MX5 ND or RF if my other half thinks we can get enough in it

Even looking at the list is making me bored so happy for any input

I still get confused in landing zones

London Sport News - Sun, 03/24/2024 - 02:24

Besides Area 18, that I find easy, the other three are confusing me. I keep having to refer to the signage to work out where I'm supposed to go.

I do think that two specific things are irking me.

At Orison, at the shuttle stops, the biggest banners tells you where the shuttle is going. It took me way too long to figure that out. Whenever I've visited a real life place like London or Paris where there are underground trains, the biggest signage tells you the name of the place you are at. So this keeps throwing me off.

In general the groupings of things however is something that really bothers me the most: Admin should be right at the lobby where you land, along with medical/emergency services, and really doesn't make sense to be a pace where you sell commodities. How is commodities not something you trade at a trade centre?

On the other hand the living spaces should be more removed from the lobbies.

The Food courts. These areas are so lovingly crafted, but serves absolutely no purpose. I go to the Cargo area and buy a stack of 20 Cruz. Besides being useless, the many shops serves almost no purpose because food has no value. In stead the food shops should make space for more gun, armor, and ship component and ship shops. Perhaps some more dingy commodity traders, mission givers, etc.

In what real world would Crusader industries not open a ship shop at every landing zone, same for every other manufacturer!?

Dont get me wrong, I don't want Landing Zones and space sports to be further dumbed down. I don't want food courts to be removed. I want more things that makes sense to be added. There should always be a few random places that don't make sense, like a random seller of med-pens in a back-alley, a random food stand in the big trade district, etc etc.

Area 18 gets it right most of the time. IO tower looks like a big Commodity trading center (but there's no live price boards). The Hospital is central and accessible from everywhere except the space station, and there is food stands everywhere.

P.O also got the layout and proximity of relative services right.

Space stations should give you direct access to Admin, medical services, and a food court from the lobby. The living/habs may be placed a bit further away, and they need a lot more variety in shops for ship components and guns and armor and clothing.

Back to my original thought: Is it just me that is too stupid to learn the layout of cities like Lorville? I know the main place has two stations, and these get you onto different lines. But it takes a fair amount of trial and error each time I need to run from one to the other and trying to work out which line I want to get onto! Perhaps I should force myself to learn it by making it my home for a while. Best part of Lorville: New Deal is right at the space port!

How do I learn more about sports?

London Sport News - Sun, 03/24/2024 - 01:50

I haven't ever developed an interest in sports. But I've realised how important it is for a social life and general personal development. Once I was at a professional event at a top law firm in London and a senior professional once they got to know that I'm from India started talking about some England vs. India cricket match and I had absolutely nothing to add to the conversation. Made me feel like I wasted an opportunity to socialise better and leave a more lasting impression. And it's not just that, I wish to develop a new hobby too. I am eager to learn more, soccer, cricket, tennis, F1 but I don't know where to start. All the information is so overwhelming and I'm such a bad perfectionist that the tedious nature of the task just ends up demotivating me to even start somewhere. So men, please help. Thanks!

London Sport News - Sat, 03/23/2024 - 17:10

My name is Martin Rhodes. The year is 2024. I’m typing this out on my desktop computer, from my home office. I’ve been contemplating the decision to put this all into words since I became an adult, but each time I’ve tried, I’ve had to stop. It’s hard to type this. But I’ve delayed for too long. I’m doing it today. With what’s coming, it just feels like the right time.

I'll begin by bringing you back to the start of my life. I was born in England, in the village of Steeple Claydon, in 1987. The village lies in the county of Buckinghamshire. The South East of England, about two hours away from London, as a reference. That may sound close, but the village is fairly remote. The reasoning for the village name comes from two facts…The name Steeple derives from the village containing its own Steeple, and the name Claydon comes from the village being built upon a large clay deposit. Not relevant to the story, but just some history. The village is small. Really small. You could walk from one end to the other in about 30 minutes or less. When I was growing up there, it was even smaller, with less housing and buildings. Surrounding the village are acres of fields and woodland areas, for what seems like miles. As a kid, I used to walk through them with friends, and see how long it would take us before the village was completely out of sight. I miss those times. Innocent times.

My parents both worked jobs. My Mother worked in a local village shop. Well, the only shop. She worked minimal hours, so she mainly looked after me while my Father worked. He worked outside of the village as a mechanical engineer, in a town in Oxfordshire, the next county over. He used to drive an hour there and an hour back, every single day, apart from Saturday. He had that day off to spend with us. I had no siblings, so it was mainly just me and my Mum most days.

I attended the village primary school from the age of five to the age of eleven, which is where I made all of my childhood friends. Every kid who attended the school lived in the village, and I was friends with almost everybody in my class. There were two friends in particular that I was close to. Shaun Harper, and Jamie Glynn. We were a trio of boys who liked to think of ourselves as the village mystery gang. We all loved detective shows and novels, and we formed a group together to solve any mystery’s that may surface within the village’s bounds. Of course, no mystery ever did. Nothing interesting ever happened here in the village. But the fields, and the surrounding forestry…that’s where the excitement was. Exploring the depths of nature…it’s something that instinctively allures your young mind. The need to explore. It’s natural.

We would leave clues for ourselves and then follow our mapped out trails towards solving the final mystery. This became a weekly occurrence. We would sometimes have more fun planning the mysteries than actually solving them. We promised each other that if we ever left this place, we would become detectives for real. None of us ever did. One of us would never leave, and the other…

The year was 1995. I was 8 years old, and only two years away from finishing primary school, along with Shaun and Jamie. All three of us were planning our weekly mystery, and this was a good one. We had set up clues all around the surrounding woodlands towards the back end of the village. We called this area the planks, as it contained a small wooden plank bridge across a river connected to a treeline. The clues were pieces of chicken that I managed to scrape away from my dinner plate one night and keep in a sealed bag. I daren’t tell my Mum for fear of being scolded for wasting food. We had spread the chicken through the planks, which led to a wolf Halloween mask, propped up in some shrubbery. The idea was that we were on the trail of a werewolf, and the pieces of chicken were human meat, leading us to the creature. We had our toy guns and waistcoats at the ready. I also had a fedora, which I had recently been given for my birthday, but both Jamie and Shaun didn’t have theirs until later that year, so I would be the only one donning the hat at this time.

We were about to set off from my house on our grand mystery hunt, but as we got to the front door, my Dad stepped in. This was a rare occurrence. The day was Sunday, which meant he should have been at work. From behind him, appeared a man that I could faintly recognise, but whose identity I couldn’t recall. My Dad saw me, smiled, then cleared his throat. “Martin,” he said softly. “Your Uncle Robert is here to stay for a few weeks.” That was it! My Uncle. I couldn’t remember ever seeing him in person, only in pictures. “It’s been a while, little Martin”. My Uncle stepped forward and smiled at me. He extended his hand. “God, you’ve grown so much.”

I extended my hand and shook his. His hand was warm and soft. I remember liking my Uncle immediately. His demeanour seemed relaxed, and just from his leather jacket and tight black jeans, I could tell he was cooler than my Dad, despite looking older. My Dad, in comparison, looked tired. He was wearing a baggy shirt and overalls. The same ones he wore to work. My Dad was always tired. I didn’t realise at the time quite how many hours he spent working. Despite knowing he was at work, I guess I always figured he was spending time having fun, or doing what he loved. As I get older myself, I realise that this is the furthest thing from the truth. I was just a kid and my views on subjects were highly skewed. After the initial greeting, my Dad told me and my friends to be careful as we ventured into the forest.

On the way, the three of us were in deep discussion, roleplaying as our detectives. As we got nearer to the forest, Shaun suddenly stopped. He burst into tears. I was confused seeing this as an 8 year old boy. Seeing someone cry with no apparent reasoning made me feel strange. Me and Jamie gave each other a glance, then walked over to Shaun to ask what the issue was. Shaun wouldn’t say. He just kept shaking his head. Jamie looked as lost as I did. We were both helpless to our friend if we didn’t know the issue at hand. Shaun suddenly choked out some words… ”Mr-Mr Ryan.” Me and Jamie both frowned. “What about Mr Ryan?” I said.

Mr Ryan was our year 5 school teacher. He was fairly new to the village, but people had taken to him well enough, and so had we. He was the “cool kind of teacher” that you would want as a kid. He was young, maybe late twenties, early thirties at most. We were around a quarter of the way through the school year, and we had thoroughly enjoyed being taught by him. He would bring in his PlayStation one console and let us play games on lunch breaks. He would show us his action men and rare transformer collections. He was the after school football teacher. He was like us, a kid. Nobody had an issue with Mr Ryan, least of all Shaun, who proclaimed in his first week of teaching, that he was the coolest teacher that any of us had ever had. So why, at this very moment, was he crying and saying his name?

Shaun ignored my question, so Jamie asked it again for me. “Oi, Shaun. What about Mr Ryan?” Shaun wiped a bead of snot from his nose with his waistcoat sleeve, and blinked his eyes several times, trying to clear the tears. He started to speak, but he looked unsure of how to say the words, like he wasn’t allowed. “Do you want us to go and get your parents-” I started to say, before Shaun immediately cut me off. “No! Don’t say a word to them. I-I mean it Martin.” Shaun was scared. Completely and utterly terrified. And me and Jamie didn’t know why. Shaun seemed to compose himself and took a deep breath. “Let’s go detectives.” He was back in character in a matter of seconds, as he walked past me and Jamie towards the forest. When I look back on this first incident, it makes me wonder how much would or would not have happened, had Shaun just told us. Had he not choked on the words, would we all be sitting here now…with our own detective agency, our own families…our own lives. So much could have been prevented, had he just told us.

We didn’t stay in the forest long. After Shaun’s outburst, we were all a little timid. The mood had been dampened, and I didn’t know about Jamie, but I couldn’t wait to just get home. We all said goodbye soon enough, and I returned to my house. My Dad was still there, in mid conversation with my Uncle. My Mum was in the kitchen, cooking dinner. I had school the next day, so I knew that I would be going to bed early. Maybe I could use my Uncle as an excuse to stay up later. It worked when my Grandma came around to visit. Maybe it will work this time. As I entered the living room, my Dad and Uncle both turned to greet me. My Dad asked me how it went in the forest. This was strange as I never normally get asked questions like this by my Dad. He’s normally too tired or busy as he puts it to speak much to me. It’s work, dinner and then soon after, bed.

“It was fine.” I replied. My Dad must have sensed a lack of authenticity in my voice, because he immediately followed up with “Are you sure?” I nodded, not wanting to have an awkward conversation about my friend crying. My Uncle leaned in and ruffled my hair. “Where did this come from, hey? Last time I saw you, you were bald as a baby’s bottom.” I thought this was a strange choice of words at the time. Then I realised, he must have last seen me when I was a baby, hence the connection. I just laughed and went along with the joke. Anything to delay my bedtime.

My wish was granted, as I went to bed a full two hours after my usual time. I overheard some of the conversations between my Uncle and Dad. Both were discussing jobs. Careers. My Dad made an offer to my Uncle several times, but my Uncle declined each one. With each rejection, my Dad would sigh loudly. At one point, I thought the two might argue, but it never happened.

When I was tucked into bed, my Mum came into my room to say goodnight. She told me that my Uncle would be staying for as long as he needed to, whilst he looked for another job. He had lost his last one, and needed somewhere to stay whilst he got back on his feet. I was ecstatic. The chance to go to bed late every night was a dream come true for a young kid. My Uncle being cool was just a bonus. I felt as though these next few months were going to be the best of my life. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The next day at school, Shaun seemed off. I spoke to Jamie privately in the morning, asking if we should speak to him about what happened. Jamie was reluctant, and to be honest, so was I. When we sat down for class, the sight of Mr Ryan, for the very first time, left an empty feeling in my stomach. There was a reason that Shaun mentioned his name, but we didn’t know why, and that disturbed me for some reason. The day went as normal, and, after the usual daily routine of lessons, break, lessons, lunch, lessons and a final assembly, the empty feeling had, for the most part, subsided. Shaun however, was still not himself.

At the end of the day, as all three of us walked off together, I decided to reopen the subject. “Shaun.” I said. “Can you please tell us what happened yesterday? It really freaked us out. You just started…crying. Why? Is someone bullying you?” There had never been any bullies at our school. We were a friendly community, so even the thought of asking that question seemed stupid. “No.” Shaun shook his head. “No bullies.” “Then what?” Jamie asked. “You wouldn’t understand.” Shaun said. “Try us, then?” I said, just happy that Shaun was at least responding to our questions now. Shaun remained quiet for a moment. He froze suddenly, then quickly snapped his head to look behind him towards the school gates. We both followed his gaze. In the distance, there was an outline of a figure. I couldn’t make it out at first. One of the teachers? I focused my eyes on the outline. It was Mr Ryan. He raised his right arm to wave. I waved back, and so did Jamie. Shaun just…stared. He turned his head around and made for a quick pace down the path. Me and Jamie quickened our own to keep up. “Shaun, what the hell is going on? Why are you running away-” I was cut off quickly. “Leave me alone! I don’t want to be your friend anymore, okay?! I don’t want to talk to any of you! I hate you both!”

Me and Jamie were lost for words. Our lifelong friend, who suddenly hated us. The worst part was that we had done nothing wrong. I saw tears begin to leave Shaun’s eye ducts once more, and start to stream down his cheeks. He must have realised, as held his arm to his eyes and took off in a hurry. Jamie and I didn’t give chase this time. Neither of us wanted to admit it, but we both felt like crying too. Our best friend, who hates us…this situation seemed impossible just days ago. We discussed it on the way back. “Maybe Mr Ryan scolded him in class?” Jamie suggested. I was unsure. “I don’t know. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Mr Ryan shout at anyone. Let alone Shaun.”

I haven’t mentioned this yet, but Shaun was a grade-A student. Very smart, and very dedicated. He was a teacher's dream. On top of that, he was an athlete. He loved sports, all of them. Me and Jamie were okay at football, but that was about it. Jamie was a little bit on the chubby side, and I was a little on the skinny. We weren’t built for contact sports. But Shaun was. Shaun was, by girls standards, reasonably handsome too. He had some freckles, but a lot of the girls had fawned over him in our village. We’d often call him “The Angel kid” as a joke. Shaun hated that. He just wanted to fit in with the rest of us. That’s why he was so close to me and Jamie, I think. We were different from him, but that made him comfortable. And that’s what friendship should be.

Me and Jamie separated once we passed Jamie’s road, and I continued towards my house. Shaun lived on the other side of the village, so any chance of seeing him on my way was slim. Once I dropped my bag off at the door, what had just happened suddenly hit me, and a wave of sadness overcame me. My Dad was back at work, and my Mum was in the kitchen. My Uncle, I assumed, was either upstairs or out looking for work.

“Hi, sweetheart,” my Mum said. “How was school?” I shrugged. My Mum stopped washing up and came over to sit with me at the table. She always knew when I wasn’t myself. Spending so much time around me, she had become wise to me in every way. She knew when I was lying, when I was embarrassed, and most importantly, when I was upset. “What happened?” I decided to tell my Mum the full story. I was at a loss with Shaun, and wondered if my Mum might be able to speak to Shaun’s to resolve the situation. They were good friends, and sometimes, the parents really do know best. Once I had finished telling her the events of the past two days, I remembered the exact look on her face. It wasn’t one of concern. It wasn’t a look of empathy. It wasn’t even a look of frustration, having to deal with another childhood argument. I remember the look…it was fear. She just stared at me for several seconds after I finished, then immediately rose from the table to continue washing up.

I asked her if she was okay, but she just told me “I’ll speak to Shaun’s mum as soon as I can.” That was a satisfying answer for me. I went up to my room, hopeful that by tomorrow, me, Shaun and Jamie would all be best friends again. But that didn’t happen. It never would. It never would, because Shaun took his own life that night. I still remember when I first heard the news. My Mum sat me down on the sofa and held my hand. I couldn’t stop the tears as they streamed down my cheeks. I felt sick to my stomach. “Shaun…he’s-he’s gone? But why Mum-.”

She hugged me tightly before I could finish the sentence. I didn’t find out a whole lot more. Not until I was older. My parents constantly referred to his death as an “accident”. It was to protect me, of course. But as a kid, not knowing what happened to one of your best friends is the cruellest situation to be in. For the next few days, I took time off school and locked myself in my room. I just sat in my bedroom, and I cried. In between the crying sessions, several police officers visited our house to talk to me and my parents. They asked me questions regarding Shaun’s personality; What was he like? Who was he friends with? Was he showing signs of being upset recently over something-

I wanted to tell the officer that Shaun had cried over something to do with Mr Ryan. I wanted to tell them that he hadn’t been himself. But I didn’t. Being a child, I think I was scared of what would happen, if I was to get Mr Ryan in trouble and it turned out that he was innocent. I wanted to tell the officer…but I didn’t have to. I would find out years later that my Mum had spoken to him, telling him exactly what I had told her the last day Shaun had been seen alive. Looking back, I realise that telling my Mum all of this…it was the worst thing I could have done.

Later that week, the village paper had released a piece of Shaun. A tribute of sorts. I remember hearing that me, Jamie and Shaun were placed on the front cover. I wanted to read the paper when it was released, but my parents understandingly wanted to protect me from the truth. My Dad bought the paper. I know he did because I saw him carrying it under his arm when he returned home from work one evening. He placed it down on the kitchen counter as he greeted her. I planned to sneak down and take a peek at the paper the first chance I could get. Unfortunately, by the time I ventured down to the kitchen, the paper was gone. They must have hidden it. I searched, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.

Jamie and I met up in the village park around a week after the last officers visit. We had both missed school for around two weeks each now. We didn’t say much to each other. We were both at a loss for what to say, really. One thing we did finally talk about, was how strange both of our parents had been acting since it happened. “They were talking about me moving schools, Martin. They wouldn’t tell me why. Just that it might not be safe anymore.”

Jamie’s words pierced through me like a sharp metal spike. Shaun was gone, and soon Jamie might be too. Jamie’s words hurt even more, because I had heard my parents have the same discussion-well, argument, earlier that week. They were both in the living room, speaking in raised whispers, but I could still hear them from the top of the staircase. My Mum was pleading with my Dad to move, but my Dad firmly told my Mum that it wasn’t possible, especially with my Uncle still at the house. Financially it wasn’t viable. My Dad’s tone then turned to one of reassurance, as he tried to plead with her.

Eventually, I just headed back to bed, bored of hearing my parents hash out the same arguments. I remember hearing the mention of my Uncle, and realising that I hadn’t seen him in what seemed like over a week. Granted, I had been a shut-in, but even when I left to go to the bathroom, or collect my food from the kitchen, I hadn’t seen him. He hadn’t even spoken to me about Shaun, or tried to console me. As I headed back to the bedroom, I heard a faint sound coming from the guest bedroom. The same bedroom that my Uncle was sleeping in. I paused, standing still on the spot. His bedroom was down the hall from mine, so normally I was never this close to hear what he might be doing inside. I assumed my Uncle would be practising music, or playing video games. Something cool. Something that my Dad would never do. The sounds I heard didn't sound anything like that. They were faint panting sounds…no…whimpers. I listened in as I stepped closer to his door. I heard it more clearly this time…it sounded like a kid. Running? Exercising? I was close enough to tell that the sound was emitting from some sort of monitor. Did my Uncle have a computer? I had never been in his room. My Dad had told me and my Mum to knock before entering. To make him feel like he has his own space.

As I neared the door, the ground’s floorboard I was walking on suddenly gave way to a squeak. I froze. The sound of the kid suddenly stopped. For what felt like an eternity, it was silent. I couldn’t even hear my parents arguing anymore. I heard the sound of a bed squeaking, and the sound of paper moving. As if a poster was being torn down. I quickly made my way towards my bedroom and closed the door behind me. I stood by the door, panting. Whew. That was close. I didn’t feel like being told off for spying. I wiped a beat of sweat off my forehead and made my way to my bed. Then I heard it. The sound of my Uncle’s door opening. I don’t know why, but at that moment I felt vulnerable. My door didn’t have a lock, and I was scared that my Uncle might be mad if he opened mine to find me out of bed. Then he would know I was the one spying. I quickly jumped into my bed, and pulled the sheets over me. After several seconds, I heard the door close again. It took me a while to fall asleep that night…

I didn’t tell Jamie that my parents had that discussion. I felt it was best to not add to the misery that had already befallen us over the past two weeks. Besides, my Dad’s words were usually final, so I had confidence that we were staying. I didn’t know how the family dynamic worked in Jamie’s family, but from the sounds of it, both his parents were in agreement.

The next week, me and Jamie returned to school. Our parents had decided that it was best that we go together. They made a point of telling us that we should stick together, at all times, regardless of what any teacher says. I found this strange, as my parents would never usually tell me to go against what a teacher says. Me and Jamie didn’t argue. We were planning on being by each other’s side the whole day, anyway. When we arrived at the school gates, that pit feeling in my stomach had returned. This was the last place we had seen Shaun alive, and I was convinced that walking into the building to relieve more memories would only make the pit deeper.

I was right. As we entered our classroom, Mr Ryan was standing, leaning against his desk, his arms folded. He seemed different. His hair was messy, his shirt tie was loose. His eye sockets, coloured with purple. He looked…well, he looked rough. His eyes met with mine and Jamie’s, and his demeanour changed. “Boys! I’m so glad you’re back.” Mr Ryan walked over to us, and went to place his hands on our shoulders. He suddenly stopped, flinching suddenly, as if we had giant spiders on them. He pulled his hands back and pointed to our desks. “We can talk about Shaun later. Take a seat and we’ll get on with the class, okay?” Me and Jamie nodded. For some reason, the mention of Shaun actually put my mind to ease, somewhat. Sometimes avoiding a subject can be more damaging than it seems. This was one of those moments. At least for me. I looked to my left once I had sat down…Jamie looked ill. The mere mention of our deceased friend had been enough to upset him, and I could tell. I reached out my hand and placed it on Jamie’s, gripping it tight. “Hey man.” I said. “We’re together on this, okay?” Jamie nodded and smiled. I think my words helped. I hoped they did. He needed more than kind words, to protect him from what was coming.

The school day was over. Me, Jamie and every other kid packed away our belongings and placed our jackets on, ready to leave. “Um, boys. A word?” Mr Ryan’s voice carried from over at his desk. We both stopped packing our things. We looked each other in the eyes. I nodded to Jamie, reassuringly. As we approached Mr Ryan, he remained seated in his chair. His eyes weren’t focused on ours. Instead, he was staring at our lower halves. As we reached the desk, it covered the view of our legs. His eyes immediately met with ours, and widened, as if surprised that we were standing there. “Sorry, I-I haven’t had much sleep boys.” Me and Jamie just stared. We didn’t know what to say. I looked around, suddenly realising that we were the only three in the room now.

“Look, I’m so sorry about Shaun. He was a wonderful young man. He was smart, intelligent. Fit, athletic. All the girls loved him.” Mr Ryan laughed. He let out a big grin. “I miss him.” Mr Ryan’s words lingered. Jamie finally burst. He began to cry. I had never seen Jamie cry. Not ever. It was as if all the bottled up emotions had finally come spilling out. Mr Ryan stood up immediately and walked over to Jamie. To my surprise, he placed his arms around him and…held him. He began to rock him back and forth, whispering “Shh, hey…shh…it’s okay mate.” I felt uncomfortable at that moment. Seeing a teacher be so…intimate with a student. It felt wrong. “Is there something you wanted to say to us, Mr Ryan?” I said.

Mr Ryan kept rocking Jamie. He didn’t answer me. I felt like I was a fly on the wall, witnessing something that was…personal. I asked again. “Mr Ryan-”. “Leave us.” Mr Ryan said, in the sharpest tone I had ever heard him use. “I’m sorry-” “I said leave us, Martin. I need to speak to Jamie alone. Go home.” I was at a loss for words. I had promised that I wouldn’t leave my friend, no matter what any teacher said. Jamie finally stopped his tears, and looked up at me to make eye contact for the first time in a while. “But sir, I promised- I promised I would stay with Jamie. We’re supposed to stick together-” Before I could finish my sentence, Mr Ryan shot me a look. I’ll never forget this look. It was one of pure hatred. “You need to leave.” he said…in a slow, malicious voice.

If you’re still reading or listening to this, I can imagine you screaming at my younger self to not leave Jamie with that man. I’m 37 years old. Every day since, I have internally screamed at myself for the decision I made. I think about how I walked out of that classroom, terrified of Mr Ryan. How I was unsure if Jamie was safe, but if he wasn’t, it was all my fault. Before I left, Mr Ryan had made me promise to not say anything to my family. If they asked, I was to say that Jamie had got home safe. I agreed, scared as I’ve ever been in my life. While this was happening, Jamie had not said a word. But I remember the look in his eyes. Jamie had never once stopped looking at me. The look he had…it can only be summed up in one word. Desperation. He wanted me to intervene, but I was just a kid. A scared kid. And Mr Ryan…he was a full grown adult. There was nothing I could do. As I made my way to the door, I took one final look at Jamie. Fresh tears were streaming down his eyes…but these ones weren’t over Shaun. Mr Ryan closed the door and that was that. I was locked out.

I walked home alone. When I reached my house, my Mum greeted me straight away, asking how the day went. I said it was fine, and then I walked up to my bedroom and sat on my bed. I stared at the wall for what seemed like hours. After some time, the adrenaline finally wore off. I threw up on my carpet floor. Breakfast and Lunch. I finally laid down on my sheets, leaving the vomit to dry. I did not know what Mr Ryan’s intentions were…but I knew that they were insidious. Even as a child, I knew.

I somehow slept that night. But I was woken up abruptly. I heard a woman’s voice, screaming and crying. I was confused…disoriented as I gained consciousness. I looked up to see the source of the noise was coming from…Jamie’s mother. I hadn’t seen her since she last came to our house for dinner, with Shaun’s parents, months ago. Jamie’s Mum grabbed me, shaking me violently. That woke me up. I grabbed her hands, desperately trying to pry her off. Finally, she spoke. “Why did you leave him?! Why did you leave him, Martin?! How could you! He’s your friend!” I knew instantly who she was talking about. My eyes started to well, and the memories of yesterday came flooding back. Suddenly, my Mum burst into the room, along with my Dad. The pair pulled Jamie’s Mum back, and she finally released her grip on me. “That’s enough Sarah!” I heard my Dad shout.

Sarah was the name of Jamie’s Mum. I didn’t know that until then. “If he had just stayed with him-” Sarah continued to sob. She fell back into my Mum, who held her tightly. “Take her downstairs” My Dad commanded my Mum. She nodded and they both walked out. I sat upright in my bed, staring desperately at my Dad for answers. He went to speak, but stopped. “Get dressed, Martin. Me and you…we’re going for a drive.” I nodded, hoping that he would explain what just happened. My Dad looked down at the dried vomit on the carpet. He gave me an empathetic look, as though he knew the reason it was there.

I quickly slid some clothes on and towards the stairs. On the way, my Uncle exited from his bedroom, and the two of us made eye contact. My Uncle looked rough. Sleep deprived and ill. Like a different person, compared to our first meeting. “I’m sorry.” My Uncle said. I didn’t know what he was sorry for. But whatever it was, he didn’t seem sorry. His eyes were widened, and a wry smile was creeping into his mouth. I felt the hairs on my neck stand up. “Sorry for what?” Before my Uncle could respond, my Dad shouted up the stairs. “Come on, out the front door.” I followed my Dad out and into the car.

My Dad drove us for a little while in silence. I dare not say anything for fear of being shouted at. I had already heard Dad shouting at others today. I didn’t want to be on the receiving end. He pulled the car into a lay-by on a country road leading out the village. These roads were long and twisty, surrounded by nothing but acres of land and cows. Finally, he turned the ignition off, and the two of us were left in complete silence, no longer masked by the car engine hum. Finally, he spoke.

“I’m sorry, Martin.” My Dad and Uncle had both apologised to me today. I still didn’t know what they were sorry for. My Dad’s expression, however, seemed genuine. “What happened, Dad?” My Dad stared at the steering wheel for what felt like forever. “Yesterday, you left school without Jamie, didn’t you?” The words hit me like a bullet. “Yes. Is Jamie-is he okay?” My Dad looked at me, I could have sworn his eyes started to water. “He’s okay.” A sudden wave of relief washed over me. I felt like I could breathe. “But I need to know something Martin. Did he-did Mr Ryan-” My Dad paused, as if contemplating his next words very carefully. “Did he touch you?” I remember the words not completely registering with my young mind. “Touch me? No.” My Dad recognised that I didn’t know what he meant, and took a deep breath. “That’s good. Really good.”

There was another moment of silence between us, and I finally built up some courage to ask… ”Did Mr Ryan…hurt Jamie?” My Dad answered almost immediately. “No. He didn’t hurt him. But he…did some horrible things to him.” “What horrible-” “It doesn’t matter, Martin. What matters is that you’re okay. And so is he.” This answer didn’t satisfy my guilt. Until a minute ago, I was convinced that Jamie had been badly hurt. But touched? What did that even mean? I had to know one thing. “Where is Mr Ryan?” My Dad smiled at me. He suddenly loosened up, as if the hard part of the conversation was over. “He’s gone now. He’s not here anymore, Martin. Do you know what I mean?” I knew. I knew because it was the same way that my Mum had told me Shaun wasn’t alive anymore. Mr Ryan was dead.

As I said before, a lot of the information that I would discover regarding what happened, would come to me as an adult. It was only after beginning to dig for answers, that I would find some. In my early twenties, I was visiting my Mum for mothers day. My parents, at this moment in time of writing, are divorced. They have been now for around 25 years. My yearly visits to my Mum were fairly routine. We would discuss our current lives, our jobs, the local news, and various current affairs. My Mum moved out of Steeple Claydon a long time ago. My Dad, he still lives there, in the same house. After our usual discussion, our conversation moved onto Dad and what he was up to these days. Then, the mention of Shaun and Jamie. By this age, I wanted answers. I had been kept in the dark for too long. I was an adult now, and I needed to know the truth. I told my Mum that I knew Shaun and Jamie had been assaulted. She wasn’t surprised that I had pieced that information together. Jamie had never explicitly told me, but I knew. My Mum told me that Mr Ryan had killed himself. This was also not news to me. I had discovered through my own research that this was the case. Several newspaper outlets, county and country wide, had written their own pieces on the events. Mr Ryan was found hung in his classroom. What I needed to know was what had happened to make Mr Ryan kill himself.

My Mum had her guard up. I could tell. “Hunny, I know you’re older now. But I don’t think you need to open this up again.” “Jamie is my friend, Mum. I was there before it happened. I-I need to know. Okay?” My Mum sipped some of her coffee, delaying as much time as she could to think. Suddenly she spoke. “Mr Ryan killed himself because the police were about to raid his house.” “What? Why?” I was shocked. I had no idea anybody was onto him before what happened. He was a pillar of the community…he was loved. “Because of what you told me, sweetheart…I told the police officer everything you told me. You were too scared to say anything. You were young, it was normal. You didn’t want to get another adult in trouble. But I couldn’t sit back and say nothing. Not when your life and Jamie’s were in danger.”

I pushed for more info. “How did the police get permission to raid his house?” My Mum cleared her throat. “Mr Ryan was a school teacher. If there was even a doubt that he could be involved in a child’s death, along with the idea of him…” My Mum trailed off.”...then the police had to do their job. It took them just over two weeks, but they finally got themselves a warrant.” “And Mr Ryan knew?” I asked. “Yes.”

My Mum looked down at the table and closed her eyes. I knew that look. Regret. Her eyes started to tear, but she wiped them. “Martin. We don’t know for sure, but…we think that there was a whistle-blower within the community, who let Mr Ryan know that his house was about to be searched that night. Realising that he didn’t have enough time to destroy any evidence he had, he knew the jig was up, and he planned to kill himself that evening. He must have figured out that it was me and your father, or Jamie’s parents, who told the officer something. He knew that you and Jamie may have been responsible for his downfall.”

I froze. I had a sudden moment of realisation. My mind travelled back to that afternoon. Me and Jamie, approaching Mr Ryan’s desk. I realised at that moment, why he had called both of us over at the end of the day. He knew that he was going to have his way with one of us. As a final act of pleasure before he killed himself. If he was going down, he was going down with a final blow to whoever ratted him out. I look back at the moment that Jamie began to cry. I believe this was when Mr Ryan made his decision to choose Jamie. He was weaker. He would break easier. After relieving that brief memory, I snapped back to reality. My Mum finally said “Don’t blame yourself. You went through enough as a child, without that adding onto the stress.”

As I drove back towards my house that evening, a million thoughts and memories flashed through my mind. When I was a kid, seeing my two friends go through hell at the hands of one man was the worst experience I thought I could go through. I was wrong. The worst experience was yet to come…my own.

Ted Lasso (2020-2023)

Be curious, not judgmental

Category: #series
Genre: #Comedy
Creators: Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence
Rating: PG-13
Season: 1-3
Episodes: 34
Running time: ~45 min.
Release date: 14/08/2020-31/05/2023

I started watching this series because I wanted something light and funny to pass the time. Despite hearing many people acclaim it being the best comedy series, nobody really convinced me to give it a chance, describing it as sports comedy show. I'm not a huge sports fan and usually skeptical of things labeled as the "best of the best". But when I saw Bill Lawrence (creator of beloved "Scrubs") was involved, I decided to give it a shot. And I'm glad I did because as now I'm one of those who think it could be one of the best comedy series overall.

Now, I'll be honest, the show's premise barely scratches the surface of its true essence. It revolves around Ted Lasso, a successful American football coach, who unexpectedly accepts invitation to become coach of the Richmond soccer team in London, despite having little knowledge of the sport. You can probably guess the challenges he faces. However, that assumption would create a false lead, because his unfamiliarity with the sport plays a secondary (if not third) role.

The real heart of the show is the relationships between the characters and the themes of empathy and optimism. Ted is a kind person who believes in better and forms connections with everyone and tries to find the silver lining in every situation. It also creates a heart of comedy in the show, as his optimism might seem a bit over the top or even toxic, but as the show goes on, you realize there's more to him than meets the eye and he has his own reasons for such approach. His actions in result slowly start affecting everyone else around and pushes them to change.

"Ted Lasso" isn't just about coaching, it's about people and their personal growth. And the humor wouldn't work without the great characters. The Richmond team and related crew start seeming like stereotypes, with quite standard bunch of arrogant bully, bitch boss, grumpy character and other "simple one liners" but as the series progresses, they become to reveal themselves as fully developed individuals with their own quirks, flaws and complexities. These changes later progresses to a new jokes and comedic scenes, alongside soul warming moments, on the way of their change.

Of course, nothing of above would be possible without the amazing writing in that show. "Ted Lasso" creates a perfect balance between humor and genuine moments, leaving a lasting memories of heartwarming feeling after the laughter fades. Yet, like any story, it's not without its flaws. Depending on preferences, certain character arcs may feel unnecessary in the moment. Especially, ones closer to the end. However, even these plotlines still contribute to the overall narrative and further character development.

I rarely do it, but special mention must be made of Jason Sudeikis's portrayal of Ted Lasso. His performance as the optimistic and quirky coach is nothing but extraordinary, embodying the character with such authenticity that it's difficult to imagine anyone else in the role.

In conclusion, "Ted Lasso" is a true gem of a comedy series that I truly recommend to anyone in search of a light-hearted comedy for a cozy evening with a cup of tea, coffee or beer. But it's more than just laughs - it's also a testament to the power of optimism, empathy and true power of faith in human spirit, making it a must-watch for those seeking something beyond basic entertainment.

Hypothetical Euroleague Format (20 Teams)

London Sport News - Sat, 03/23/2024 - 12:16

I was bored yesterday and started thinking of a potential Euroleague format which is more in-line with the traditional European pyramid system that rewards teams on domestic success but also gives favor to the traditionally large clubs and gives them ample opportunity to qualify for the highest level of European basketball. Personally I am not a fan of keeping this closed/licensed system in the long-term but I acknowledge that it has increased the quality of European basketball in recent years (at least at the highest level). Basketball is still a growing sport in Europe and basketball clubs do not have nearly the budget of football clubs which is why dropping out of European competition would be a huge shock even to the big clubs. In the long-term however, Euroleague does need to move away from a fully closed system (having only 3-4 wildcards a year is realistically a fully closed system) not only in the name of fairness/meritocracy but for the sake of growing the game and opening up the competition to new teams and developing markets. If your goal is growing the game then its only natural you want more teams capable of playing at the highest level (See disclaimer #2). Anyways here's what I cooked up, justification and clarifications are below. Would love to see debate on this.

Disclaimer 1: Format assumes the eventual return of Russian team. Whether that's in 2 years, 5 years or 10 years I don't know but realistically they will be back one day. Disclaimer 2: Euroleague is a nepotistic organization that is more interested in protecting the Licensed Clubs/Shareholders than it is in growing the game but lets pretend they are not or that this changes one day.

9 WILDCARDS

Guaranteed Wildcards: (In case of failure to qualify for direct spot or qualification spot): Real Madrid, Barcelona, Baskonia, Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, Efes Andolu, Fenerbahce, CSKA, Zalgiras, Maccabi, Olimpia Milano

Maybe Guaranteed: Partizan/Zveda (at least one surely), Virtus, ASVEL, Monaco, Alba, Bayern, Valencia??? (Case by Case debate)

Qualification Process (Estimated Time: 2 Weeks / 3-6 Games Per Team). Three different scenarios for 2nd Phase depending on how many direct qualifications were taken up.

Phase 1: 6 Groups of 4 compete in round-robin tournament in different host cities. 1st in each group qualifies directly for Euroleague. 2nd Place teams and two 3rd place teams with best +/- score from each group move on to Phase 2.

Phase 2 (If 1 spot left): 8 team elimination tournament, Winner secures spot in Euroleague.

Phase 2 (If 2 spots left): Two 4-team elimination tournaments with winners taking final two spots in Euroleague.

Phase 2 (If 3 spots left): Three head to head elimination games between 2nd place teams in each group. Three winners move onto Euroleague.

Justifications;
  • 20 team format ensures participation of only top teams with high budgets and high attendance.
  • Round robin format ensures Euroleague derbies every season as opposed to alternative formats with a group stage.
  • Elimination of license system ensures direct qualification only based on merit and domestic success.
  • License System will be replaced with guaranteed wilcard system. Traditionally strong clubs who fail to qualify for direct spot or qualification spot will be granted a wildcard spot in qualification tournament.
  • Wildcards also used to reward growing teams from smaller leagues/emerging markets and give them a chance at Euroleague participation (i.e. London Lions, Cluj-Napoca, Promethy)
  • Qualification system would ensure suspense and drama to qualification process. Tournaments would attract visiting fans and create play-off atmospheres before the season even begins.
  • Qualification process would be over in only 2 weeks and create the perfect balance between qualification on merit and giving former licensed teams a lifeline if they have a poor domestic season.
  • Outside of recognizing Spanish League as the strongest, the format does not attempt to make judgment on relative league strength. There is plenty of opportunity for traditionally strong teams from traditionally strong leagues to qualify.
  • Maximum amount of teams from one country would be 5.
Negatives;
  • Playoffs would need to be shortened to three game series due to time constraints, Play-in system cut out indefinitely.
  • Probably shorter off-season due to longer season.
  • There would need to be universal agreement among all major domestic leagues to reduce amount of games due to increased # of games in European competition.
  • Would need to increase the amount of teams with guaranteed wildcards.

MLB in Edmonton

London Sport News - Sat, 03/23/2024 - 11:59

The Oakland A's are looking for a temporary home for the next 3 (4?) yrs. First choice seems to be minor-league ballpark in Salt-Lake City (7-10,000 seats); beautiful ballpark with great view, not a major-league pro sports venue. What about Commonwealth Stadium? Extra-wide CFL field+running track allow for a proper MLB-size park. I checked it out on Google-Earth, actually weird how well it fits:

With the outfield on the rec-center end, home plate about 10-15 feet from right-field stand, dimensions are as follows; left-field line along elks goal-line, approx. 318ft. Left foul-pole to left-center along existing stand. This is similar to Progressive Field in Cleveland, and would necessitate an 18-20ft high wall in left-field (hardly a Green-Monster). Left-center cuts-in on an angle toward deep-center, which is somewhere along the elks sideline, 395-410ft from home (why not make it deep to maximize seating in left-field, would make a nice pitchers park). This leaves room for bull-pens between outfield wall and rec-center. Low-lying temporary seats along outfield wall could fill the gap, create an intimate feel. Only the corners of existing stands, on either side of rec-center would be away from field (CNE stadium this is not!) Deep-center to right center would be on a similar-angle as left field, with power-alleys around 385ft (lots of room to play-with for right field wall, balance between simmetry and maximizing seating-proximity). Right field line would run anywhere from 320-328ft, about 10-15ft from the existing stand; while this creates a less-than-ideal, shallow foul-zone in right, it would be awesome for fans to be right on-top of action.

Even with temporary-seats in left-infield to fill the gap (up to elks-endzone line?), there would still be an "Oakland-esk" foul-zone in left-infield. This could be filled with batters-boxes and "dugouts" for both teams, as there is no space in right (a little asemetrical, but nothings perfect). The final field configuration is not much different from other pitchers-parks ie Commerica and Minute-Maid, and the idiosyncracies are in-keeping with other parks throughout the Major-leagues (yo Fenway!) I admit, it's not a perfect MLB park, but would suffice for 3-4yrs.

Pitch would have to be grass with substrate for drainage (if they can do it for the World-Cup, they can do it here). Artificial-turf would kill the bid for traditionalists, already keen to dismiss this as a multi-purpose/cookie-cutter stadium solution for which MLB seeks to distance themselves (yo Oakland, yo Montreal)

At the least, I'd love to see a Jays-Mariners home-and-home, just to see the field configuration. This could be done on turf, as is the London Stadium series, and 4/5 MLB parks. It would be a good test-run, without the expense of temporary seats etc.

Would suck for Elks die-hards who would have to move next-door to Clarke Std; an extra 10-15,00 temporary seats would boost capacity to the 20,000ish average attendance. (Vancouver built a 27,000 seat temporary stadium for $14mil during BC Place reno; Ti-Cats played at 13,000 U of Guelph while Tim-Hortons was built). Maybe that's a better long-term fit anyway?

Do i think Edmonton could support a permanent MLB team? Probably not. Would have to average around 20,000 for 80 home games in a market already loyal to Oilers and Elks. How about 60 games for 3-4years?* Could be done, with the novelty/curiousity factor. Already a rich baseball history in Alberta with NW league, and several top-notch minor-league parks. Combined with Calgary, has 2mill+ population with no other MLB teams nearby. It can't be worse than Salt-Lake City, currently around 1million and oversaturated with NBA, MLS, and no major-league park. (Do the Jays have TV rights for all of Canada?)

*The spring is a problem; Edmonton is cold-as-balls until, at least the end of May. I propose a home opener for May-long weekend (upper-deck seats for $20?). First 6-7weeks could be played in Sacramento/ on the road. This would avoid clashes with Oilers playoff run. Could offer cheap upper-deck seats to Oakland season-ticket holders as an olive branch (man are they pissed!) If you think the spring weather is any better in Utah (elev. 4000+ft), go look at the recent MLS "blizzard-game" between RSL and LAFC ---is this a major-league sports town? Similar issues with spring-attendance/cold exist with MLB in Colorado, Chicago, Minnesota, Detroit....

Would be great to see a full Commonwealth Stadium for home-opener, July 1st weekend, playoffs? It seems to be a special-event venue anyway, ie Grey-Cup, world athletics, CONCACAF qualifiers. Elks barely reach half-full. Even the damn colour-scheme fits the A's! Training-facilities, ala rec-center, field-house seem top-notch. I'd love to see a revamp of the rec-center facade, from the concrete-slab, to a warmer-traditional look ie Baltimore, Pet-Co park.... imagined reno'd suites with balconies, rooftop patios/concourses.

What do you think about baseball at Commonwealth? If not the A's, how about the Jays (exhibition)? What about a group-stage of the World Baseball Classic (currently in spring --problem)?

Let me know

[MATCH THREAD] West Ham United Women vs Chelsea FC Women - Sunday 24th March, 16:30 GMT (WSL)

London Sport News - Sat, 03/23/2024 - 11:47
Welcome to the /r/chelsealadiesfc match thread for our WSL fixture, away to West Ham.

Date: 24th March 2024

KO: 16:30 GMT

Competition: WSL

Venue: Chigwell Construction Stadium

MATCH PREVIEW

The second women's football weekend of the season will see Chelsea contest a London derby, away to West Ham United.

The banner weekend opened with a Manchester derby - which our title rivals Manchester City won 3-1 against a 10-player Man United, at the Etihad. That means the Cityzens have opened up a three point lead at the top of the table, and are level on goal difference with Chelsea - and so the onus is on back on the Blues to win our game, in order to put us back on top.

At this time in the season, with just six games left to play, any dropped points could prove fatal - especially with the form Man City have been showing. City too have the advantage of being able to focus almost entirely on the WSL - whereas Chelsea have interest spread across four competitions, and this fixture itself falls between the two legs of our Champions League quarter-final tie against Ajax.

Our opponents on Sunday, West Ham, have had something of a mixed season - as is typical for the Hammers. Chelsea traditionally have an impressive record against Rehanne Skinner's side, and have beaten them twice already this season - in the home WSL fixture and the FA Cup.

However, he Hammers did pose problems for Chelsea in both of these games this season, and have scored some big upsets in league play too - including drawing 1-1 against Man United, and a shock 2-1 victory over Arsenal. That means this fixture could be something of a banana skin for the Blues - a caution which is becoming increasingly true about many teams in the WSL. In reality, any of those six remaining fixtures could pose trouble for Chelsea - especially given the strain on the squad due to our injuries and fixture congestion. The pressure remains on.

Nathalie Bjorn and Mayra Ramirez were able to participate in limited training this week, with Emma Hayes saying in her pre-match press that it would be a late call as to whether they will be available for Sunday's game. There were no other injury updates, with long-term absentees Kerr, Fishel, and Bright remaining out.

The comfortable 3-0 win in Amsterdam on Tuesday does mean Chelsea can come into this important league game knowing that we already have one foot in the Champions League semi-finals. That takes some of the pressure off of Wednesday's second leg at Stamford Bridge - and means we can focus on this fixture, instead.

We are firmly in the business end of the season now - Chelsea have been here before, and will hopefully be able to keep up our 100% winning record in March so far, with another crucial result here.

HOW TO FOLLOW

Sky Sports will be broadcasting the match live in the UK. For those in other territories, it will also be available to watch for free online on the FA Player.

As always, text updates will also be provided by 5th Stand, and the club's official Twitter page.

Heel slippage in Edea boots

London Sport News - Sat, 03/23/2024 - 03:26

Is there anyway for me to make edea boots more narrow in the heel? I was fitted for 260C, but my heel slipped a tiny tiny bit in thick sports socks when i jumped, it was also very roomy for my ankles (this is know is part of the design). He has tied the skates as tight as possible without impacting the design

The fitter recommended to try a B size instead (he didnt have any in stock), i emailed a couple places but turns out non standard sizes are in worldwide short supply right now and ill have to wait 8 months+.

Should i take my chances with the C size? Is there anyway for me to make the heel more narrow at home? im currently abroad and im not sure this fitter will heat gun it, if anyone can gives recs on fitters in london that would heatgun or pinch it would be great.
