Living in downtown San Antonio as a woman

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 16:07

Hi all. I'm going to be moving to San Antonio temporarily for the summer. Never been to Texas before, so I've got 0 clue what the city is like. From the research I've done a lot of people seem to suggest moving to the north side of the city, but I haven't had any luck finding short term housing that I can afford there. I have finally found a place thats downtown, I think just a few blocks from the river walk(whatever that is lol). I'm running out of time to find housing, so I'm probably going to try and go with it. But my concern is am I going to be safe there, or is it going to be super sketchy, especially as a 21yo woman? It's also street parking, so how likely is it that I should worry about my car being broken into or stolen? Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

This Day in History - April 24th, 1967: The Sixers win the title and the NBA has its first pair of father-son champions

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 15:12

On April 24th, 1967, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the San Francisco Warriors in Game 6 of the 1967 NBA Finals. With the championship, Sixers rookie Matt Guokas, Jr. won his first and only ring. His father, Matt Guokas, Sr., also played professionally, first in the American Basketball League (ABL) and, later, in the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which was the League that would eventually become the NBA. And back in 1947, when he was playing in the BAA with the Philadelphia Warriors, they won the BAA Championship.

With the 76ers victory in 1967, the Guokases became the NBA’s first father-son duo with rings. The same feat would later be attained by four other pairs:

  • Rick and Brent Barry
  • Bill and Luke Walton
  • Mychal and Klay Thompson, and
  • The Gary Paytons

Matt Guokas, Sr.’s basketball career ended tragically. After winning the title in 47, an automobile accident in the offseason cost him his right leg. Unable to continue playing professional sports, Guokas Sr. turned to announcing, calling games for the Philadelphia Eagles from the 50s through the mid-80s.

[EXPANSION] First Colorado, then Yucatán | Second Western Expedition

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 14:34
A Solis Ortu Usque ad Occasum

Date: March 21st; 1963

Location: Ranger Commonwealth

In the West of the Commonwealth, the Frontier Exploration Department has continued their journey along the Colorado River, establishing several new outposts and supply depots in the region with the goal of following the promises made by the Governor-General of the Ranger State of Colorado a few years prior. While the prior moves by the Rockies Interstate Compact did force the FED to reshuffle their expedition calendars, making the exploration of Colorado a priority for the department, there were a few which wanted to take up travel for the more exotic regions in the North American continent...

Of course, this trip wouldn't be formed until the first weeks of April, meaning that this timeframe could be used to finish off on the reclamation operations in the entirety of Texas, making the Ranger Commonwealth the major shareholder of the population of Texas, which was a given due to the fact that Austin and San Antonio both are under our control. On April 5th, 1963 the Frontier Exploration Department would announce to the public that the territories of Texas have been fully reclaimed and reorganized into the districts of the Ranger Commonwealth, marking the 8-year journey over, which was undertaken by the Texan Rangers who were the first catalyst for the creation of our nation...

While the main department was celebrating in the mainland, a small detachment from the department would be undertaking a far more risky, yet interesting task at hand. The collapse of the Centroamerica which was a close partner of the Republic, in both diplomacy and trade meant that the region was in chaos, and this chaos would breed tons of unwanted characters, such as drug lords and organized crime groups. For this goal, the Ranger Commonwealth would create their own Alcatraz Island in the so-called Yucatán region. Named as Fort Hamer, named after the assassinated Ranger Francis Augustus Hamer, this new facility would become a large prison and military complex of the Ranger Commonwealth, where the worst of the worst criminals would be held...

Summary:

  • Expanding into provinces RK016, RK023, TX101 and YU016.

Where'd you move to San Antonio from? What's cheaper? More expensive?

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 14:23

San Antonio bills itself — with the data to back it up — as a more affordable city than the national average. I'm curious what that looks like on the ground. For folks who recently moved here from other places in the U.S., where did you come from? What's been less expensive? More?

Dean gets more Texan as the show progresses

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 14:06

I know the reason for the deeper voice but what’s the reason for the Texan coming out?

And I guess I should actually say North Texan as we have different accents in Texas. Jared’s non accent is actually very common in San Antonio. In most big Texas cities we have no accent. But once you get out to like Boerne, or Richardson in Jensen’s case, you’ll get a twang. No idea why there is such a difference when it’s only like 15 miles but growing up in San Antonio, in the La Cantera area, Boerne was always considered hick to us. Even though it’s like 5 minutes away.

This is my story: thanx for the memories (I think)

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 14:05

In high school, I wanted to be a comedian. As you might imagine, I had yet to talk to a guidance counselor. At one point, I told people, I should be voted Most Likely to be on a Game Show--this was after the advent of reality TV with the beginning of Survivor, which, last I checked has had so many seasons, the season must be written in scientific notation. Because of shows like Survivor, I saw no future in writing for TV shows, when I had wanted to write for sitcoms or Law & Order. And yet, I remember when Jeff Probst was the host of the short-lived Rock 'n Roll Jeopardy on VH1 before becoming the host of Survivor (somehow, he doesn't appear to have aged a day). I remember the greatest moment in TV history that nobody else saw, which was when Rock 'n Roll Jeopardy featured Graham Nash, Joe Walsh, and Mark McGrath. At this point, all three musicians count as "classic rock," but back then, McGrath was the kid among the elders of Rock. McGrath knew something about The Eagles that Walsh did not, to which Walsh quipped that, when McGrath was learning about rock history--he was making rock history. To this day, I cannot find the clip--even on YouTube, but that is, nonetheless, the way I like it.

The reason I invested much of my time in wanting to be a comedian is, well, I think--it depends on what your meaning of the word "is," is. But really, it's because I was in independent studies for most of freshman year and sophomore years for a long-list of reasons that probably are not very interesting in a Reddit post but might make for better substance in a tragic-comedy of an Irish nature (turns out, my maternal grandpa's side was from Ireland, which I did not know until recent years; so what I'm saying is, I think I have an inner Irish drunk screaming to get the Led out). I fell off my bike before freshman year--concussion. Add that to what was likely a concussion from being rattled by M-80s on campus (punks in 1st quad lighting M-80s), which can also be a traumatic brain injury--and I went into independent studies. I had done well in middle school and my dad had a 4.0 in high school, so I believed in my ability to learn without the structure of public school, only to learn how to learn from the internet in the late 90s. Doing so was possible back then, but would take hours and probably will result in people thinking there is something wrong with you. Just because I did, doesn't mean you should. I don't recommend it. Such as, I spent hours in writing and re-writing sentences in Microsoft Word until I figured out--what the fuck is a passive sentence? I had turned the settings to high so I would know all the things wrong with my writing, but all that sounds like, eventually, is "all work and no play make Jack a dull boy." Ironically, I learned the answer to "what the fuck is a passive sentence" from the infamous quote by Bill Clinton: "It depends on what your meaning of the word 'is' is."

Or, as Ralph Wiggum once said, "Me fail English? That's un-possible."

I did, however, have a mentor, Dr. Maimes (Bruce Maiman, Ph.D), who was a showrunner for a morning madhouse show on KDON in the Monterey-Carmel-Salinas market...which is where Craig Kilborn got his start in local news before leaving for SportsCenter and then The Daily Show. So what I'm also saying is, I'm old enough to remember when Craig Kilborn was the host of The Daily Show. Similarly to Mark McGrath on Rock 'n Roll Jeopardy--there aren't many clips of that on YouTube. The nickname Dr. Maimes gave me was the, "TV madman," because I would call-in and talk back to them with clips from TV shows, such as, Homer Simpson saying, "Will you two shut up? People are trying to sleep!"

The point of honing my writing skills was for college essays and belief that applied knowledge was better than a test score or grade (albeit, those things aren't really an issue for me, now, but were at the time because I had been in independent studies so my transcript was junked up with P's that did not indicate C or higher). The hope was, I could still get accepted to a big name college or university out of high school, rather than have to attend a community college. The problem is, to quote the name of my neighbor's wireless network,"shit ain't free." Unfortunately, the neighbor is only anonymous to me and I cannot provide residuals for a network name that might have copyright protection. Let that one go viral, I suppose. But I digress...ironically. I had no money for a big name college or university--or, scholarship or trust fund. I did not qualify for student loans either because my dad was making more money and my older sisters were not dependents.

I should have been playing baseball and football in high school, but like I said, I had been in independent studies and I had, somewhat, given up on myself at the time because of allergy related breathing issues and more severe case of post-nasal drip because of pollination levels after the rains of El Nino/La Nina (1997, 1998). I also knew next to nothing about football at the time and my dad was a Raider fan after Joe Montana left the Niners (including Montana's time with the Chiefs)--I didn't like to watch the games because of the Black Hole fans. Fast forward: after high school, I became a Raider fan after having been a fair-weather fan of the 49ers (when Jerry Rice signed with the Raiders). So, I dedicated my time to losing weight and exercise after high school, despite the frequent problems with mucous and infections (rhinitis, sinusitis, bronchitis--my weight lifting teacher in high school dubbed me, "I always have bronchitis").

The "reward" for this newfound dedication was slander and libel (college newspaper) by false and politically motivated accusations when I was in the Student Senate at Cabrillo College. The false accusations being, that I was suicidal and wanted to bring a gun to campus--the false accusations coming from a backstabber, Jonathan Mark, who was hooking up with a girl, Leflora Cunningham-Walsh, who was cheating on her boyfriend. I made the mistake of taking her encouragement to exchange emails with her--I was a little naive (like I said, two years in independent studies and when I did go back, I was oft-sick, my nose was not draining right). Jonathan was the type who pretends to be your buddy and he even invited me to his house several times, including to watch the debates between John Kerry and George W. Bush in 2004 and Game 2 of the World Series (the one with Curt Schilling and the bloody red sock), only for Mark to go around telling people, "he knows where I live!"

Part of their slander and libel (college newspaper) about me was because I kept a Late Night with Conan O'Brien mug in my Student Senate office--I bought the mug at the NBC Store in Manhattan on August 31, 2001. We flew back to SFO on Tuesday, September 04, 2001. I talked a lot about having wanted to be a comedian but by then, I was mostly disillusioned with comedy for a number of reasons...I could explain this but I don't want to because it's too off-track or stream-of-conscious-y. I think the gist is, I was the type who sympathized with Sen. Joe McCarthy of McCarthyism but was also listening to the music of Bruce Springsteen and watching a show whose bandleader played with Springsteen. By the logic of anti-communists...........was I communist? I also opposed the push to remove the gender-signs from the campus bathrooms--in 2004.

This was Santa Cruz county, so--much of what has been going-on today politically and culturally is nothing new to me. I had also been on the front page of the Santa Cruz Sentinel at a Bush/Cheney rally in Downtown Santa Cruz. My dad was also friends with Dr. Stan Monteith, a radio-host who used to run for Congress against Leon Panetta. Dr. Stan was also a major influence on Alex Jones; both of whom were pushing the Y2K scare in the year 1999. Don't tell that to Tucker Carlson though, lately, he's been telling you: Alex Jones has been right about everything (such as, predicting the attacks of September 11, 2001).

Basically: I "trauma dumped" all the details of this kerfuffle (including salacious details I knew because Jonathan was prodding girls about their sex lives at his parties) in Word-journals I put passwords on, only to get drugged by Chris Robinson with cookies he distributed at a Student Senate meeting. The cookies were made with cocaine and marijuana. Chris fashioned himself as a wannabe Boston George (George Jung from the Johnny Depp movie Blow). I went home and cut-and-pasted the Word-journals and sent those out as emails and instant messages. Chris was on the committee that suspended me. He contacted me afterwards to tell me about the cookies and threaten to kill me if I ratted on him. I assured him, nobody would believe me even I told them because my credibility was shot. Because of that, I moved to Spokane with my parents from Soquel when my dad sold his house in Soquel in 2005--which, oddly enough, was bought by a ghost-writer for Hillary Clinton. They wanted to get out of the hurricanes in Florida. The same year as Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

In more recent years, the good news is, I did finish my BA in history at SJSU, albeit I was accepted for transfer to the UCLA and UC Davis in 2007, which I note because of the rigor of coursework but I chose to attend Eastern Washington University because I thought it was a better chance to settle down, only to get fired without cause by The Home Depot in Liberty Lake (they had been trying to blame me for things I didn't do, such as, fork-lift related accidents when the store had been allowing employees to clock-in drunk or hungover but were not sending people for alcohol testing after accidents). I'm the true meaning of the gig economy--after getting fired without cause, I worked on two movies starring Amber Heard: The Joneses and John Carpenter's The Ward. I was a stand-in for Richard Jenkins in an independent film, Norman...the only reason I note this is, is because my acting coach, Ralph Peduto, played a gravedigger in an episode of Monk and I was a stand-in for an actor who's notable for having played a ghost on HBO. You'll either think that's really weird or kinda funny. My 6th grade home room teacher taught the class "Motto" by Langston Hughes about a gravedigger who digs to be dug in return.

I also wrote blogs for Bleacher Report between 2008 and 2011, when I was de-platformed in 2011 and BR acquired by TBS and Time Warner in 2012 (very funny?). I will claim, the main reason TBS acquired Bleacher Report was to shut-me-up. I was also in ComedySportz in San Jose between 2013 and 2014--Team Coco's producer, Matt Gourley was in ComedySportz...where? I have no idea. They were considering me for the main show, but I stink at guessing games.

Additionally, I have paid off old student loans.

Yes, Joe Biden, it is possible for millennials to pay off old student loans for degrees that are mostly feckless in helping to land a career. I do suspect that, the Biden administration might be reading this shit because my uncle was a delegate for Hillary Clinton from Las Vegas in 2016 and in his words, it was "rigged." My uncle also says he was friends with Rep. Zoe Lofgren...my aunt worked for Lycos at the time of the dotcom boom-and-bust. It is feasible that, an "expert" opinion to Lofgren on regulating the internet was coming from my uncle. Lofgren is also the same Rep who had Stephen Colbert (back when he was funny) testify before Congress in 2010.

My dad also sold the duplexes he bought in Spokane after the BLM-Antifa "mostly peaceful" protests in Seattle because prices of real estate outside Seattle were skyrocketing. Because of this, I found the old Late Night mug in the shop that on the property. I decided to donate the mug to Goodwill. The same shop in Spokane Valley is where I threw many things into the furnace, such as, old VHS tapes I had recorded TV shows on, including Late Night, Law & Order, The Tonight Show, and Friends. Into the fire. Nothing beats the warmth of watching the flames of VHS ribbon and plastic. I still have my old Mad Magazines and TV Guides though.

So, there's only one way I know how to end this post and it's by quoting Dennis Miller, whom I spoke to on-air back in 2007 because his wife sent instant messages to him on his radio show to tell him he had been mean to me when I asked why he thought Ron Paul was a "nut." He had me call back to apologize.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Help identifying snakes [San Antonio, TX]

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 14:01

Found these two little guys hanging out near the garage. They seem to be light brown with round eyes. They frighten and slither back into their hole when approached, but are curious and poking their heads out when no one is around.
