Would anyone recommend a sensible podiatrist in Seattle area?

Thu, 05/02/2024 - 21:41

Hello everyone. I got mortons neuroma 5+ years back with a bad fitting ski boot, and went to the local podiatrist and he recommended metatarsal pads. After fiddling with those, toe spacers, and changing my shoes to Lems Primal, it was managed. I could not wear any of my old shoes. In last 2 years, it has flared up a few times and have gotten injections 3x to the extent the last one in Nov 2023 had no effect. So I went to a different podiatrist for a second opinion: he told me its metatarsalgia, not a neuroma and ordered me some inserts. (I had a foot MRI scheduled by a sports med. doctor who took pity on me and it showed a neuroma). Day to day I can survive with Altra Escalante 3 with an insert with metatarsal head or Crocs as house shoes, but pain and discomfort just out of bed in the morning is too much. I have researched of a place in Renton that does RF ablation, and another place in Seattle that does shockwave therapy. (Typing this while wearing correct toes :), you all know how it goes.) Thank you and god bless our feet.

I'm looking to get into F1, but Im not too sure which team to support. Perhaps based on the type of teams I follow in other sports ya'll can decide which team is best for me.

NHL - Montreal Canadiens/Vegas Golden Knights NFL - Buffalo Bills/Seattle Seahawks NBA - Golden State Warriors/Minnesota Timberwolves MLB - Houston Astros/LA Dodgers UEFA CL - Borussia Dortmund NCAA Football - Alabama Crimson Tide NCAA Basketball - Gonzaga Bulldogs IPL - CSK

Help me choose a NHL/MLB team to root for

Thu, 05/02/2024 - 15:34

Hello! I’ll be moving to the Harlem area this summer and want to get into both baseball and hockey at a professional level. I’m coming from Portland, Oregon (born and raised) and despise Seattle teams, so I’ve never had a chance to commit to fandom of a team for both MLB and NHL (die hard Blazer fan for NBA).

I love the fact that the Islanders and the Mets are seemingly the less loved NY teams, and in some way are underdogs in that sense.

But their home games are nowhere near as close as Yankee Stadium and MSG will be.

Will I look like an absolute dork for rooting for these teams? Or a real fan of the sport since I’m not riding with the two more popular teams?

I really hate the idea of rooting for the Yankees

Here’s some other things to take into consideration:

  1. I’m poor and don’t want to pay out the ass to go to games (especially MSG’s ticket prices)

  2. I’m very anti LA and Seattle teams so any rivalry or known contention between a NY team and a west coast team is a plus

  3. I love underdogs/teams that don’t have a long history of being good

  4. I plan on being a real time fan and always staying up to date with my teams

  5. I’m also pretty anti terrible owners

Thanks for any insight!

Benelli M4 Loading Port Mod in Seattle

Thu, 05/02/2024 - 09:27

Hi Team, Recently did my first 3 gun with my M4.

  1. I know this isn’t the most optimal sports gun but I’m not in the market to get a whole second setup right now.

  2. Trying to quad or even dual load the M4 is so tough because the port and shell stop are so tight. Anyone know a reputable shotgun gunsmith that could open this port at a reasonable price in the Seattle area?

I put out a message to WCA but I’m not sure 3 gun mods are their specialty.

Thanks!

Potential at scoring some free Metallica tix while supporting USA Skateboarding!

Thu, 05/02/2024 - 08:37

Hey Squad! Exciting news here - stumbled upon this online contest that offers a chance to win Metallica tickets for their upcoming Seattle show. As a huge skateboard fan (I suck at skating but love it lol) I'm I love seeing Metallica's support for USA Skateboarding. Entering this contest means contributing directly to US skateboarding and Adaptive Action Sports, which is a branch of US skate. The lucky winner even snags a signed skateboard. Needless to say, I have quite a few entries. Check out the donation link here:

R1S legroom sucks for tall family, will R2 actually be better?

Wed, 05/01/2024 - 21:51

I have never had an EV but I've always really wanted one and I've become a huge fan of what Rivian's been doing over the last year. I started consuming as much as I can about the R1 line but couldn't stomach the cost of an R1S so when the R2 was announced I put down a deposit since it looked right in line of what I want. However a couple weeks ago a Jaguar dealer nearby had an R1S so my wife told me we should go test drive it, and without a doubt I'm sold. This thing is so much fun to drive and it's legitimately the only time I've been really excited about a car. Everything about the car was super nice and the only weird thing I found while driving is that when I punched it on a pretty sharp curve getting onto the freeway it got a bit squirrelly when it was in conserve mode (I think) but when I tried again in sport it was amazing and hugged the curve like a pro. After driving it my wife told me I should buy one.

BUT there's one major flaw and I don't know if it's worth waiting for an R2 (if it will even be any better). I'm 6'8" and the world is not built for people my size. The drivers seat in the R1S is actually very spacious, I didn't even need to move everything back to the farthest position, however with me sitting comfortably there is zero room behind me in the second row. All the reviews I see say that there's plenty of space in the second row but it's always some 5'9" person sitting behind a seat adjusted for them. I have a teenage daughter who's 5'11" and a pre-teen boy who's 5'9" (and thinks he's going to be taller than I am). If I get this car I'm absolutely making it our road trip car whether it's to go camping a couple hours away or drive to family 12+ hours away, and I don't see how we could do this in an R1S unless the 2nd row seat behind me is folded flat and a kid sits in the 3rd row, but then that cuts storage space which is needed for road trips. For reference when my wife got a new car recently we spent a lot of time looking at legroom and she ended up getting a Palisade which has 42.4 inches of legroom in the 2nd row vs. the R1S' 36.6. I wish the R1S didn't have a 3rd row and instead had another 8 inches of travel for the 2nd row, but it doesn't so here we are.

Everyone is saying that the R2 has better legroom, and in fact the R2 roadshow is coming to Seattle this weekend, but unfortunately I missed the window to get a reservation to see it. Doesn't matter much since I'm sure they wouldn't have let me sit in to see what the legroom is like. Have they released any kind of expected measurements for the R2 or had anyone even remotely tall sit in one? I might just buy an R1S and tell my kids to figure make it work, but if the R2 works then I might wait (if I can hold out that long)

Overachieving in althetics

Wed, 05/01/2024 - 17:45

I know the story might be out of place here. But I'm posting anyway. I've been in the healthy gamer community for three or four years now. I'm a gamer... But also an athlete and an academic overachiever? And I feel like there's a relationship between the things that drove me to do what I did (story following) and liking gaming.

I'm really desperate for help and community and willing to tell my story anywhere where there might be a possibility of help.

So I started rock climbing at age 6. This was 40 years ago when climbing wasn't the semi mainstream sport it is today.

My dad is a climber and that's how I started. I basically took over for my mother as his partner which is a whole other bag of worms and a therapist introduced me to the concept of covert incest after hearing about the dynamic.

But that's not what I'm here to talk about!

Everywhere I went I got tons and tons and tons of attention from people. They'd never seen a child my age climbing and they were curious.

They always asked at least two questions - how old are you and how long have you been climbing.

It was like I was living in two totally different worlds. In my home/school life I was essentially invisible totally neglected so shy I could barely speak I had no friends dealt with terrible anxiety and self-loathing and was suicidal by the age of eight.

But in the climbing world it's like I was a different person. I was so far from invisible! I was like the epitome of visible!

Time went on and I guess I must have had some aptitude. At 15 I entered a national competition and took third place. At the time there was no age group for me so I was competing against professional adult women.

I got a lot of attention for that. Magazine articles sponsorships, and somebody wanted to coach me to become a professional climber.

So I left my home in Seattle and moved to salt lake City to be with the coach.

I wonder and wonder and wonder about that decision. I said yes - But did I really want it? Did I just want to get out of my abusive family and home?

At 17 I started using drugs and alcohol and by 26 I had quit climbing completely.

I know that there is so much from these experiences that impacted me. And yet I cannot seem to find meaningful support and community.

I listened to an interview with Orlando Bloom a couple days ago and he was asked about how he continues as an actor when what are likely to be his largest successes as an actor (Lord of the rings and pirates of the Caribbean) are behind him.

He talked about evolving and taking on new challenges.

I relate to that! But when I get really really depressed like I am currently there's a part of me that doesn't want to evolve doesn't want to learn something new just wants to go back to a time when it seemed like I was really special. Everything I can possibly imagine doing today feels like such an enormous let down to myself and others.

It feels like the most special I'll ever be is behind me forever.

I know on some level this is ego but when things get really tough I don't feel like I have any capacity to let it go or to even imagine not wanting to go back in time. I feel like I'm trying to do this all on my own.

All the self-help literature always talks about the importance of fellowship and community and support. So how am I supposed to do this without any of those things?

I'm currently a community college student and really struggling to put my life together.

I think there's this piece that anything I can imagine for myself doesn't feel good enough, doesn't feel amazing enough or special enough.

I've done some research into child actors and that's the closest I've ever come to finding a community of people that could relate to this. And one article I read said that so many child actors end up messed up and turn to drugs because their family relishes all the attention they're getting instead of giving them kind loving support and helping them develop humility and still be kids!

I've looked for therapists that specialize in child actors. I've looked for support groups. I haven't found anything.

I feel so incredibly alone and broken.

I met a fellow student who was an ex- professional ballet dancer and had some similar experiences. It was so amazing to talk to them. But one 3-hour conversation is not enough to get me through!

And even they didn't have to deal with the level of being the "only one" that I did/do.

And it feels complicated. Climbing for me was the best and the worst. On some level I hated it and always felt anxious and dreaded getting up in the morning. On another level it's some of the best experience I've had in my whole life. The complete focus I experienced while climbing. The feeling of accomplishment and freedom sitting on top of a big rock looking at an amazing view. It's like there's really nothing better in life than that to me.

I told myself I can have that again if I want it but I feel so stuck. Knowing I'll never be amazing again. Letting go of being amazing and just being an average climber again.

I live near a climbing area I went to frequently as a kid. I've lived here for about 6 years. For the first two to three years sometimes I would drive through the park and it just felt bizarre. I wanted to walk up to people and tell them that I used to climb here. In my head I could see they would just look at me blankly and be like okay? Why do I care?

Anyway i'd be grateful for any responses/relating or if that's not possible what I'd really like to hear more than anything is "I don't have that experience. I don't know what that's like. But I believe you and it sounds really tough and you deserve to feel better. I believe there is a way for you to feel better and live a good life. There is life after fame and being the only one!"

Overachieving in althetics and CPTSD

Okay I'm getting kind of desperate and wondering if there's anyone out there that can relate, to at least part of my story because I feel pretty damn sure that nobody can relate to all of that...

So I started rock climbing at age 6. This was 40 years ago when climbing wasn't the semi mainstream sport it is today.

I think there's this piece that anything I can imagine for myself doesn't feel good enough, doesn't feel amazing enough or special enough. I know this is trauma on some level and something that should be possible to heal from...

But whenever I try to talk about this with people they either don't get it or say they get it but they're responses show me that they don't really get it and they don't have empathy.

Living in Solon? Coming from DC > Seattle > Columbus

Wed, 05/01/2024 - 07:28

Hello again! My family is preparing for a move back to the area this June. Solon has entered the mix as a potential landing spot. It was never our top choice, but it keeps coming up because of schools, relative proximity to Cleveland, and the value for money in terms of housing. We have two toddlers, but aren't necessarily a family who is looking to just get out of the city into the suburbs for more space. This isn't an escape move!

We're a family of four that thrives on being active—not necessarily in sports, but in engaging in various weekend and evening activities. We love festivals, we love events, we love Halloween vibes...we're moving to northeast Ohio for family and because we like how much variety is in the area. Our ideal weekends often involve coffee and pastries, visits to playgrounds or museums, and evening concerts followed by neighborhood strolls. A typical good day when we visit family in Akron might include an outing to the Valley at Szalay's or Hale Farm, capped off with coffee and an evening drink in downtown Cuyahoga Falls.

So, having amenities within a reasonable distance is important to us. With attractions like zoos and museums just a 25-minute drive away, Solon is starting to look like a promising home base. A major consideration for us is the cultural fit. Coming from vibrant neighborhoods like Eastern Market in DC, Wallingford in Seattle, and currently Westgate in Columbus, we're eager to understand the immediate cultural shift we might face. Additionally, we are quite interested in the city's future development plans and what life could look like in Solon for a growing family.

Here's what we've gathered so far: Solon offers excellent educational opportunities and is conveniently located near several key areas, making family outings to places like the zoo and local museums very accessible. Again, we're not seeking out suburban life, per se, but looking for something that could feel like a compromise.

We have a few specific questions as we consider making Solon our new home:

  1. Does Solon feel isolated from the greater Cleveland area, or does it integrate well despite its relative distance?
  2. Considering its slight remoteness, do the amenities and community atmosphere justify living a bit further out?
  3. How does Solon compare to other city suburbs? Does it resemble Delaware’s relationship to Columbus, or is it more akin to how Avon Lake relates to Cleveland?
  4. We’ve noticed plans to revitalize the community park, establish a town center, and expand bike and walking trails. Do these projects seem feasible in the near term? What trajectory is Solon on?
  5. Identity of an area has always felt important to us...I haven't figured out what Solon's is yet. Does it have one?

Thanks in advance for your help!

tl;dr: Moving to northeast Ohio in June, considering Solon for its good schools, proximity to Cleveland, and value. We're a socially active family curious about local amenities, Solon's integration with Cleveland, and its development plans. Looking for insights on cultural fit and community trajectory.

[DeCock] Are the Hurricanes, coach Rod Brind’Amour at a contract impasse? Here’s what we know

Wed, 05/01/2024 - 07:25

With nine potential unrestricted free agents this summer, including longtime stalwarts like Brett Pesce, Brady Skjei, Jordan Martinook and Teuvo Teravainen, these playoffs were always going to have a bit of a “last dance” feel for the Carolina Hurricanes, at least for a big chunk of the current group.

With an extension to head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s contract still not concluded, that sense is growing, especially when there were rumblings a deal was all but completed near the end of the regular season, only for negotiations to apparently reach an impasse and stall.

As the Hurricanes wait for their second-round series against the New York Rangers to begin, Brind’Amour’s name is increasingly being mentioned in connection to openings elsewhere. Confidants say he has become unsure about his future in Carolina, according to sources familiar with those conversations.

“I think it’s all but done,” Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon said in a telephone interview with the News & Observer. “(General manager) Don (Waddell) and him are working on it. I don’t think there’s anything there. We’re in the playoffs and they haven’t focused on it. They’re doing it together. I said OK to almost everything they’ve asked me for. They’re just getting through the last little stuff.”

Waddell declined to comment.

“It’s in Tom’s hands,” Brind’Amour said in a text message to the N&O.

With Tuesday’s 6-3 win over the New York Islanders to claim a 4-1 series win, the Hurricanes became the first NHL team to win a playoff round in six straight seasons since the Detroit Red Wings from 1995-2000. (That includes the preliminary-round win over the New York Rangers in the 2020 bubble.)

Those are the six seasons since Brind’Amour took over in the summer of 2018 and ended a decade-long playoff drought that dated back to his time as the team’s captain. They have advanced as far as the conference finals twice but were swept both times — by the Boston Bruins in 2019 and the Florida Panthers last spring. He won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year in 2021.

Were Brind’Amour to hit the open market, he would be one of the most sought-after candidates for any opening. There were already rumors Seattle Kraken general manager Ron Francis is preparing a big-money offer for his former teammate immediately after after firing head coach Dave Hakstol on Monday.

Brind’Amour would also be a natural fit for an underachieving, deep-pocketed team like the Toronto Maple Leafs, who could part ways with Sheldon Keefe if they suffer a seventh opening-round elimination in eight years. (Again, including the 2020 preliminary round.) Brind’Amour’s availability might also pique the interest of other teams that have coaches under contract, like the Philadelphia Flyers or Vancouver Canucks, where he has personal connections.

While those franchises (or others) may be willing to offer more money, Brind’Amour may not be able to obtain the input into personnel decisions he has had in Carolina and would have to uproot his family after living here for 24 years. His 12-year-old son Brooks has played for the Junior Hurricanes program with, among others, Jagger Burns and Jade Williams, the son of Brent and daughter of Justin respectively, and his son Skyler spent this season nearby for the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL in the Florida Panthers organization.

After starting out as one of the NHL’s lowest-paid coaches in 2018, Brind’Amour signed a three-year extension in June 2021 after the Hurricanes’ third straight playoff appearance, but only after securing raises for his staff. Even so, Dean Chynoweth left a month later to join the Maple Leafs and become one of the NHL’s highest-paid assistants and was replaced by Tim Gleason, who remains on the staff along with Jeff Daniels.

Which MLB team should I support/root for?

Tue, 04/30/2024 - 23:32

I hate to ask this kind of question since I see it on football subs all the time and I bet some of you are annoyed by it as well. But, I'm looking for some guidance on how to find a team to gravitate towards as I try to get back into baseball. I live in the northeast and I support the following teams in other sports: Chicago Bears, Boston Celtics, Oregon Ducks, Seattle Kraken, and Aston Villa FC.

I've visited a few stadiums over the years including: Fenway, Camden Yards, Shea Stadium, Chase Field, most recently Great American Ball Park, and have walked around the exterior of the Mariners, Pirates and Cardinals ballparks.

The only rule I have is that the team I choose/that chooses me cannot be in either East division, as I have friends who root for teams in those divisions so I'd rather avoid the banter with them. Ideally I'd like the team to not completely suck (so they have a decent chance at making the postseason soon) and have some good history but not too much recent success (ideally no World Series wins since 2000... I want to be along for the ride!).

Some players I thought were cool when I was younger: Mike Piazza, Vlad Guerrero, Felix Hernandez

Teams I'm considering: Mariners, Mets (despite my East rule but one of my friends is a Phillies fan), or Reds.

Wouldn't do Cubs since I wasn't there for their long struggle. Also not interested in Twins, Tigers or Brewers

I appreciate any suggestions based on the information presented here.
