2023 AH Supported Project- Pleasant Valley Secondary School
Below is a story from a small community in BC that directly benefitted from their peers' fundraising efforts.
Pleasant Valley Secondary School (PVSS) is located in a small community with less than 5,000 people called Armstrong. In Spring (2023), the school's Athletics Director, Jon Koch, reached out to a potential coach for the school's first ultimate team. He assured that there was a great group of kids keen to learn. The first practice occurred during Spring Break 2023 and was well attended, but by the first exhibition tournament in Kamloops, the team was down to only about a dozen players. However, the remaining players loved the game and would even spend time outside of practice throwing a disc together. By the second exhibition tournament, this small group of athletes from a small town known more for their cheese than athletics started winning games. Fast forward to the Okanagan Valley AA Ultimate Championships, the team from PVSS placed 2nd and earned a spot in the BC Provincial Championships.
"When starting a new sports program at a high school in BC, there are many roadblocks that could pop up and impede success. The box of discs provided by BC Ultimate (BCU), ensured there was no financial barrier to developing a new ultimate program at PVSS (Armstrong), and played a key role in ensuring our program's success." - Jeff Samuel, Coach (PVSS Ultimate)2024 CUC Tournament Manuals
