International Student Stuck Between Tufts University and Northeastern
Intended major: Tufts: BS Community Health / Northeastern: Health Sciences
Background Information
- Family in the Massachusetts Area (Cape Cod and West Mass)
- Third Culture Kid Coming from East Africa
- Parents Make good money and will be paying: they can afford both universities, but I don't want to dig them in a hole.
- I'm neurodivergent (On the autism spectrum, Dyslexia, etc., I started collecting them like Pokemon cards), and I am part of the LGBTQ community.
- Relatively nerdy student who struggles with branching out
- I would love a school that heavily supports me in my major and has opportunities to work.
- IB student, which would translate to credits: Tufts: 12 Credits estimate, Northeastern: 22 Credits estimate.
- I am not particularly sporty, but I enjoy the arts.
- I am indecisive if it is not apparent enough by this post.
Tufts University
Tufts Pros:
- I can do the Accelerated BCH/MPH courses
- I might be able to graduate in 3.5 years
- Known for their research as a whole and highly connected to hospitals
- Smaller population and class sizes.
- Highly ranked in public health according to US News (which only ranks masters, sadly): #7
Tufts Cons:
- More Expensive of the Two
- A little farther out of the city.
- I have read that there is a more fraternity and sport-based route to developing platonic relationships, but I am unsure if this is true.
Northeastern
Northeastern Pros:
- Honours College (10,000 USD Off - Possibly more pending our rebuttal for a little more money)
- Further in the city, which allows me to develop not only within the context of the school but the greater Boston area (in comparison to Tufts, which is not far away)
- Coop Programme!
- I would instantly apply to Northeastern's Master in Public Health programme if I graduated there.
Northeastern Cons:
- Massive School, compared to Tufts - would be competing for research operations. Additionally, you have to be incredibly self-motivated, which, although I am, I don't know if I am enough.
- It is not as highly ranked in public health (it has no public health major, so I would do health sciences, which has been considered similar): according to US news, their masters in public health rank #107.
- With the coop programme, however, you may not see your friends given the strange calendar.
