Review of Related Literature

In recent years, researchers have studied how using the internet a lot can affect us socially and mentally. Quaglio (2019) sheds light on the dark side of excessive internet engagement, particularly on social media platforms. The author underscores a correlation between heightened internet usage loneliness and social isolation. Moreover, Quaglio raises alarms about the detrimental impact of online pornography consumption on intimate relationships, potentially fostering addiction and unhealthy dependencies.

Complementing this perspective, Diomidous (2016) explores internet utilization's social and psychological ramifications. While acknowledging the internet's role in facilitating access to information and communication, Diomidous warns against its perils, especially for younger demographics. Highlighting the potential stagnation of brain development among children due to unrestrained internet exposure, the author underscores the importance of mindful internet usage, particularly in educational contexts.

Contrary to the aforementioned concerns, Griffiths (2022) emphasizes the internet's transformative power in enhancing societal resilience, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Griffiths underscores the indispensable nature of internet access for students, advocating for online education as a cornerstone during emergencies. The author anticipates a continued expansion of the internet's significance alongside technological advancements, suggesting a nuanced understanding of its benefits and challenges.

In synthesizing these perspectives, it becomes evident that internet usage encompasses both positive and negative implications for individuals and society. While the internet facilitates connectivity and access to information, its unchecked consumption may exacerbate social isolation, impede cognitive development, and foster dependency. Thus, a balanced approach to internet usage, informed by empirical research and mindful engagement, is imperative to harness its benefits while mitigating its potential harms.

Methodology

This study employed a cross-sectional survey design to explore the internet content consumption patterns and perceptions of Grade 10 students regarding its impact on their overall wellness. Participants were Grade 10 students from Negros Occidental High School using convenience sampling methods, resulting in a total of 50 participants completing the online survey conducted via Google Forms. The survey questionnaire, consisting of eight sections, was carefully crafted to assess various aspects of internet content consumption and its perceived impact on wellness among Grade 10 students, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative measures. Data collection was facilitated through an online survey administered via Google Forms, with the survey link distributed to participants through email and social media platforms. Participants were instructed to independently complete the survey and provide honest responses. Upon accessing the survey link, participants were presented with questions concerning their internet content consumption habits, perceptions of its impact on wellness, and strategies for discerning credibility. They were asked to select multiple-choice responses and rate statements on a Likert scale, with the option to provide open-ended responses for qualitative insights. Quantitative data obtained from the survey underwent descriptive statistics analysis to summarize participants' responses and inferential statistics analysis to examine relationships between variables. Additionally, qualitative data from open-ended responses were subjected to thematic analysis to identify recurring themes and patterns. It is important to acknowledge the potential limitations of this study, including the reliance on self-reported data, the use of convenience sampling, and the possibility of response bias. Additionally, the study's findings may be limited to Grade 10 students in the specified context and may not generalize to broader populations

Results and Discussion

-Engagement with Social Media Content

The prevalence of social media content consumption among respondents highlights the significant role these platforms play in shaping online experiences. Social media's pervasive influence can both enrich and detract from users' well-being, depending on the nature of the content consumed and individual usage habits. While social media can provide a sense of connection and community, excessive exposure to curated lifestyles and filtered realities may contribute to feelings of inadequacy and anxiety.

-Importance of Relaxation and Stress Reduction

The high rating of internet content in helping respondents relax or reduce stress underscores its potential therapeutic value. However, it's crucial to ensure that reliance on online content for stress reduction does not lead to excessive screen time or disengagement from offline activities. Encouraging mindfulness practices and promoting a balanced approach to technology use can help individuals reap the benefits of online content consumption without compromising their overall well-being.

-Recommendations and Peer Influence

The willingness of respondents to recommend internet content to their peers suggests a level of trust and satisfaction with the information consumed. Peer recommendations play a significant role in shaping online consumption patterns, highlighting the importance of fostering critical thinking skills to evaluate the quality and relevance of shared content. By encouraging dialogue and promoting media literacy education, individuals can become more discerning consumers and creators of online content.

-Balancing Consumption with Other Activities

The finding that a majority of respondents do not consciously manage their time spent consuming internet content raises concerns about potential overconsumption and its impact on productivity and well-being. Encouraging mindful consumption habits and setting boundaries around internet usage can promote a healthier balance between online and offline activities. By prioritizing meaningful interactions and activities, individuals can cultivate a more fulfilling and purpose-driven lifestyle.

-Strategies for Discerning Credibility

The reliance on trusted sources and the evaluation of bias or conflicting viewpoints indicate a level of digital literacy among respondents. However, there is room for further education on critical thinking and fact-checking strategies to navigate the vast landscape of online information effectively. By promoting media literacy skills and providing tools for evaluating the credibility of sources, individuals can make informed decisions and resist the spread of misinformation and disinformation online.

-Influence of Personal Values and Interests

The influence of personal values and interests on engagement with internet content highlights the subjective nature of online consumption preferences. Recognizing and respecting individual preferences while promoting diversity and inclusivity in online content can foster a more enriching and empowering online experience. By encouraging diverse perspectives and facilitating meaningful interactions, online communities can become catalysts for positive social change and collective well-being.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the findings suggest a nuanced relationship between internet content consumption and students' well-being, with opportunities for both positive enrichment and potential risks. By understanding the factors influencing online engagement and promoting digital literacy and mindful consumption habits, individuals can harness the benefits of internet information while mitigating its potential drawbacks. Through collaborative efforts among educators, policymakers, and technology companies, we can create a more supportive and inclusive online environment that empowers individuals to thrive in the digital age.

Recommendations

Promoting Digital Literacy

Educational institutions should integrate digital literacy programs into their curriculum to equip students with critical thinking skills and strategies for discerning credible information online. By incorporating digital literacy education from an early age, students can develop the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the internet landscape effectively. This proactive approach empowers students to make informed decisions about the content they consume, reducing their vulnerability to misinformation and harmful online influences.

Creating Safe Online Spaces

Social media platforms and online communities should prioritize creating safe, inclusive environments that promote positive interactions and well-being. Implementing measures to combat cyberbullying, hate speech, and harmful content is essential to fostering a supportive online environment. Additionally, providing resources for mental health support and digital well-being can help individuals navigate online challenges and seek assistance when needed. By prioritizing user safety and well-being, online platforms can contribute to a more positive and constructive online experience for all users.

Encouraging Mindful Consumption Habits

Students should be encouraged to adopt mindful consumption habits, such as setting limits on screen time, taking regular breaks from digital devices, and engaging in offline activities for balance. Educators and parents play a crucial role in modeling healthy technology use and fostering open discussions about the impact of internet content on well-being. By promoting awareness of the potential risks of excessive internet usage and encouraging self-regulation, students can develop healthy digital habits that prioritize their overall well-being.

Empowering Critical Thinking

Efforts should be made to empower individuals to critically evaluate online information and media sources. This can be achieved through media literacy education, fact-checking initiatives, and promoting awareness of bias and misinformation tactics. By developing a skeptical yet discerning approach to online content, students can become more resilient to manipulation and exploitation. Encouraging active engagement with diverse perspectives and promoting constructive dialogue can further strengthen critical thinking skills and promote a culture of informed decision-making in online spaces.

Collaborative Engagement

Collaboration among stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, technology companies, and community organizations, is essential for addressing the multifaceted challenges of internet usage. By working together to develop evidence-based policies, educational resources, and support systems, we can create a more informed and resilient society that harnesses the full potential of the Internet for positive social change and well-being. By fostering collaboration and collective action, we can build a digital ecosystem that empowers individuals to navigate the internet landscape with confidence and resilience.

In summary, by implementing these recommendations, we can strive towards a digital landscape that promotes responsible online behavior, fosters critical thinking skills, and empowers individuals to navigate the complexities of the internet with confidence and resilience.

My girlfriend (37) cheated on me (42) a few days ago on a girls trip. I could use some advice for how to deal with it and move on.

Fri, 05/03/2024 - 21:12

Hi everyone, I can use some help.

My girlfriend of 7 years went on a girls trip to San Diego a few days ago. She lost her phone and I had to help find it from her Mac at home. I saw a guys number face time her and I confronted her. At first she lied and said it was nothing, but then she came clean and said she got a guys number, went out with him until 5am, and kissed him. We've had problems for a while. She's been going out and ignoring my texts for hours, and sometimes not coming home until well after the bars close.
We live together, and just got a puppy a few months ago. She's going out tonight to an event one of these girls is throwing, that I was invited to. She said I can't go, the girl wouldn't want me there, but went anyway to "support" her friend.

I'm en emotional wreck, and not sure how to move on. It's very tough. Yesterday I booked a flight to Vegas for the night, just to get away and go out. That made me worse.
Tonight she said she'd be back at 11pm to watch the dog, and that I can go out. I don't have any friends here that aren't married with kids, so there's really no one to go out with. I'm drinking and might go out by myself.

Does anyone have any advice? It's adding insult to injury that she cheated on me, and wants to end it completely, and going out :(
Thanks for listening

TLDR: I don't know how to move on. She's making it worse by going out and not caring about our 7 year relationship. Mentally I'm a wreck. I can use some advice or methods to cope.

Drama aside, let’s talk about fashion.

Fri, 05/03/2024 - 20:57

Am I the only one who really does not understand Alex Hall’s fashion choices? I mean at the opening party for the San Diego office she wore such a weird fake leather dress that looked really cheap, as in cheap fabric and bad sewing. As Amanza said she seems to always wear some type of fashion nova design and that is so weird to me, I thought that at this level she would want to wear a bit more well made clothes.

Anybody in the San Diego area with a GMT800 that I can shadow when it comes to maintenance/fixing?

Fri, 05/03/2024 - 20:41

I now drive my dad’s 2004 Yukon, and I plan on keeping this car in the family. Unfortunately, I didn’t grow up working on cars (quite the opposite actually, I’m an office W-2). However, I have plenty of experience working on mountain bikes (bleeding brakes, servicing dampers and air springs, bearing replacements, etc.).

I want to learn everything there is to know about my 4L65E and LQ4. That includes common issues like sunflower bell housing failure, leaking oil pickup tube o-ring, etc.

I am basically looking for a mentor who I can be a helping hand for. If you own a car repair shop, I will work for free on weekends if that means I can be hands on.

VA Loan - Transferable

Fri, 05/03/2024 - 07:21

Hi, I learned recently that a VA loan is transferable. Meaning if you sell your house, you can transfer the loan to someone, even if they are not a veteran. The advantage to this is the person keeps the same interest rate, and they assume the note with however much debt is still owed.

The person assuming the loan typically needs to find a way to pay the seller the equity in the home. As I understand it, this is done via cash or securing a loan to cover the equity amount (for example, if the note has $300,000 left on it, but the house is worth $400,000, the buyer assumes the loan for $300,000 and pays the seller $100,000 either from their own cash funds, or by securing a different loan for this amount).

The only catch is that your VA loan eligibility is tied to that loan, so you can't get another VA loan while that loan exists. The only way to not have this happen is if the person you transfer to also has VA loan eligibility, they can assume the loan under their eligibility (they don't have to, but you can make it part of the deal).

I am curious if anyone has ever done this? If so, how did it work out for you? I currently own a home in NY and am moving to San Diego. I would love to assume a VA loan on a San Diego house as part of the purchase, so I can have a lower interest rate and thus afford a home. And I am considering selling my home to a fellow veteran at my current location so they can assume my low, and the lower interest rate.

Scrolling through this morning & saw a stitch with this video so I searched it, this cannot be real. Cecily needs to touch grass or something bc this is actually insane. Not everything needs to be documented, some things CAN be left private, this should be one of them. This looks ridiculous. I cannot stand her.
