Recent graduate of VT moving in, looking for friends in town

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:24

I’m gonna be graduating from Virginia Tech with my Master’s soon and it’s kinda hitting me I’ll never have friends the way I did in college.

I’ll be moving into Forestbrook apartments off McConville Road on the 3rd of June. Anyone living there (or elsewhere in town) looking for friends?

I’m a 24 year old guy about to start an accounting job. I like to game (casual shooters, monster hunter, Palworld, open world type stuff, etc), see live music (think 90’s/00’s rock stuff), reading (fantasy and science fiction), always wanted to try D&D stuff but put it off. Like traveling too, always love seeing pretty towns/natural areas. I like to go shooting occasionally (long range target shooting and skeet shooting), grew up riding horses on a farm but I’m not too hot on it tbh.

Not much into sports or sportsbetting but as a yapper myself I’m always down to have someone nerd out over it if it’s your thing.

Can’t think of much else to say so yeh! Hit me up.

Possible causes of noise?

Noise occurs when switching from park to drive/reverse or drive/reverse to park. Noise also occurs when turning sometimes or during normal driving when on sport mode and vehicle is down shifting.

(20M) Odd breathing and respiratory issues.

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:21

Hello, I have always been of average height, weight, muscle mass, etc., like basically bang average. I have, through my life, experienced some odd behaviors typically related to my lungs. My guess is more specifically related to how effectively my body uses the oxygen it gets to fuel itself.

When I was a kid (from ages 1-7), I had asthmatic bronchitis, which went away a little later than my doctors predicted. During this period, I used inhalers and always felt physically behind compared to the other kids. I always wanted to do sports, and from when I was around 7 until 16, I had at least 2-3 practice sessions every week, alongside tournaments every other weekend, etc. At times, I was actively playing three different sports regularly, all quite physically taxing, like football and badminton. However, even after years of this, I still felt behind everybody, even the children who had never been more physically active than just playing in school. Like, I could never run as far, for as long, or keep a high pace. It always felt odd.

Specifically, it was whenever I started getting out of breath (which was also earlier than most) that there was just never any coming back from it for me, not until I had a long rest at least. It has always felt like the air I breathe in those situations just doesn't do anything to help me catch my breath. This, as an example, also meant that I always would just walk everywhere because I could always do that for a very long time. Since it would never get me near running out of breath, but if I just ran, jogged, or even biked for a short while (at least if there was just the smallest hill in the way), I would be quickly out of breath for up to 15 minutes on average as soon as I reached a point where I had to catch my breath. Later in life, I moved to a place where I had an entirely uphill walk to school, and suddenly, when I had to use my muscles more to carry myself up the hill, I also began having trouble walking without losing my breath and sweating all over. But walking straight for hours? No problem.

This is when my theory about the problems being related to my lungs' "oxygen absorption efficiency" began. Because I realized that the problems were always worst and basically only a thing when I had to do motions that would require a higher amount of oxygen to be transported to my muscles. Now I know this sounds stupid because, of course, you get more tired and such when you're using more oxygen and energy engaging your muscles, but it felt like I just had a tipping point that others never had.

Around this time, I also heard about another kid who was told by a professional that he had a certain breathing-related diagnosis. I don't remember which one, but it described that he was more sensitive (in an asthmatic way) to sports-related activities, which meant he only ever used his inhaler when he had to do physical activity. This felt relatable to me, so I went to my doctor who tested my breathing ability by measuring the volume of air I could exhale in a single breath. He concluded that it was a completely normal amount for my age and so on, and that he couldn't see any issues.

However, since that meeting, I have still had occasional issues, and using my theory, I have been able to predict almost every time it was going to happen, except for one recent instance.
During a recent trip to Japan, I experienced multiple moments in cities like Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara, Tokyo, etc., where even a short walk would make me feel very nauseous, lightheaded, and like I was going to faint at any moment. I suspect it was due to my unexplained issue combined with poor air quality (as I'm used to fresh air living in rural Denmark). I had certain lapses in memory after these incidents, indicating that I was clearly affected, which led me to seek advice here.

Does this sound familiar as a symptom of an underlying problem? I do intend to consult my doctor about it, but what specific aspects should I mention that are relevant?
- Many thanks in advance! :)

How is the gym facility at GW and in general, how is the recreation such as intermural sports? Are they mostly indoor? Are there even dedicated spaces for such activities?

[PC] 35 Year Old Dad Looking for PvE Group

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:20

Hello! As The Final Shape approaches (and Into the Light is thriving) I am looking for a chill, respectful, and non-toxic group to tackle dungeons, nightfall, and raids.

I've tried many groups and have left due to things like immature sense of humor, racism, politics (yuck), or time/play/skill requirements.

I don't have that much time to play, but I enjoy the game and try to play when I can. I also can schdule time for things like raids on Friday and Saturday nights. I have done some raids, Deep Stone is the one I'm most familiar with. For dungeons, I'm comfortable with Propjecy and Grasp. I also like playing Control and IB. I've only completed one grand master (would love to do more!). I'd love to try for some loot in Pantheon in a low stress comfortable environment!

I'm into sports, anime, sci-fi, and video games. With all that being said, if you think your group might be a good fit please let me know!

Thanks!

Ps. I'm EST timezone

42/M/OKC - Quiet Sunday Evening

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:19

It’s a quiet Sunday evening at home and looking for a conversation. Short term, long term, whatever works. We can talk trash about sports, complain about work, gossip about the neighbors or whatever else comes up but let’s keep it classy.

Gambling losses

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:19

I’m a 21 year old male that works for Amazon. I make around 30k a year. Over the last 10 months, I’ve lost 10.5k to online casino. The number kept growing, month after month, and I nearly lost everything to my addiction. My parents almost kicked me out and friends tried their best to help. After staying away for almost a month, I lost more today. I get these bad feelings and thoughts that no matter how much I save (for example, 10k), I will end up gambling it away.

There’s no way of knowing how much we’re being manipulated by marketing, online convenience, and simply ourselves. Every time I sit down to watch a sports game, there’s at least 10 commercials for gambling. As a kid, I never realized how much these assholes pushed the gambling industry. It feels disenfranchising. Ultimately, idk if watching sports is even worth it anymore. Too much temptation.

If there’s anyone else going through this, just know that I haven’t lost as much compared to you, but I still get that terrible gut punch and feeling of guilt and shame that is only “temporarily” fixed by ostracizing myself from any outside contact. So let’s promise each other not to feed the pigs anymore. Because the truth is, they’re laughing at us and relishing in our business.

Sniper MX 135, 100 Octane?

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:18

Opinions?

Short distance DD, occasional 50+mile treks

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:18

Looking to get a first bike. The commute to work is about 10 miles. I can do either all surface street where the top speed is 40mph, or pop on the highway( unlikely -at least for awhile ), limits there is 70mph. But I make the trip 4 times a day. So -40miles. Occasionally I head home to parents place and that’s about 50miles away. Either via 70west or two alternate non-highway routes.

I really like the cafe look. Not wanting a sport bike. And I don’t want a full on cruiser.

Sat on a Royal Enfield gt650 today. It was great, except… the position is a bit too forward leaning for me. I’m about 5’10” -32”inseam,and my knee comes up just over the very small engine heat guard and tucks right under the fuel tank. I think I’m going to have heat problems with that, unless the pedals are adjustable.

Also sat on an RE interceptor. And liked it a lot. It’s about and “cruiser “ as I’d like.

I’m willing to do all my own maintenance. I have a VW gti and the wife has a ford escape. I do all the maintenance/repairs on both. And of course at some point I’ll want to modify it I’m sure.

Finally my absolute top end of price is $7k.

What should I look for?

Cost of Judaism

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:17

I’m considering neighborhoods for a house in an area that’s not entirely known for being cheap, but I’m struggling. I grew up as the only Jew in high school. I was over 30 minutes from the temple, meaning no one was in my school district, sports, or other activities. I always felt detached from the people but close to the religion. I don’t want my kids to experience that, but as I look at my options, I’m really frustrated. The houses are ridiculously expensive, and obviously the interest rates could be better. On top of that, synagogues are asking a lot to join and a lot more per child for religious school, which was really important to my own life experience. How do you guys manage that? How do I pick school districts so my kids can be around other Jews?

Russian property holdings

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 19:16

What is the status on seizures? It seemed a few weeks ago this was going to be in aid packages from several countries. So seized funds would go back to Ukraine to either figure or rebuild.

I'd like to see sports tech and wall street money go buy Alexi jewels yachts and dachas at discounts.
