Civil War: A cautionary tale about a doomed America
We all go and watch a film with our expectations. When we see a trailer for a film, we start making our expectations about what is going to happen and about whether or not the hero or the villain will win. In my case though, I was unsure about how Civil War was going to end and I will never forget the experience I had while watching it. To summarise, Civil War is, as the name strongly implies, a dystopian military action film that depicts a group of journalists and photographers travelling to Washington D.C. in the midst of a rapidly escalating 2nd American Civil War to get an interview with the President before rebel forces descend on the White House. The President in question is never named, but because he is played by Nick Offerman, let's just call him President Offerman for now.
Not much is specifically stated about the President Offerman, other than he is serving a third term in office, something that has been completely illegal ever since the passing of the 22nd Amendment in 1947. Apparently, despite having less than five minutes of screen time, President Offerman is evidently a major character because he is the one responsible for the Civil War. How he caused the Civil War is not stated, but what is stated is that he disbanded the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which would no doubt cause American crime rates to skyrocket to an amount not seen since the U.S Prohibition of beer in the 1920s, which may have contributed to the Civil War.
But enough about how President Offerman plunged America into ruin, because I do not intend to speculate how he did it. Instead, I intend to address what Civil War is all about and it's the Civil War itself. You see, I'm something of an historian and I can tell you for a fact that during the First American Civil War, the Confederates were evidently the villains as they wanted to keep African-Americans, a people who had never done anything evil or cruel towards them, kept in the shackles of slavery, while Abraham Lincoln of the Union was fighting to free the slaves, so obviously the Union were the heroes of the First American Civil War. But in the Second American Civil War, there are no heroes, just war criminals.
In Civil War, America is divided in four, between the Loyalist States who remain loyal to President Offerman and his dictatorial government, the Florida Alliance who control much of the Deep South, the New People's Army who control the Northwest and share the same name as the communist insurgency in the Philippines and finally the Western Forces, a bipartisan alliance of Texas and California who are the most powerful of the secessionist forces. The Civil War has, according to a line from one of the main characters, been going on for fourteen months, a year and two months, and by this time, the Federal Government are on the brink of defeat, but President Offerman continues to deny this and says that they are in fact winning. So he's not only the worst President that America has ever had, but a pathological liar as well, a match made in Hell.
Throughout Civil War, it is shown that each side, regardless of their reasons for fighting, are made up of war criminals who do not hesitate to kill without hesitation. Such an example is shown when a group of men wearing Hawaiian t-shirts and bullet-proof vests, who I strongly believe are members of the Florida Alliance, execute three soldiers of the US Army without any hesitation or remorse. Later, a group of xenophobic white-supremacists militants are filling a mass grave with massacred civilians and one of them, a blonde man with a beard and red glasses, murders a journalist the moment that he learns that he is from Hong Kong, only to get some very bad karma when he and his fellow war criminal are run over to their deaths.
Another scene shows that America is becoming more and more like a third-world country and this is the scene set at the refugee camp that is built in a decommissioned sports stadium. Throughout the refugee camp, there are many American citizens who are being cared for by an international organization called "The Global Relief Fund", likely a department of the United Nations charged with delivering relief aid to struggling countries, in this case, America.
Throughout places like Africa and the Middle East, it's not uncommon to find a relief camp managed by UNESCO or the Red Cross, but considering the usual state of those countries, it really isn't surprising. What no one in real life would expect to see is a relief camp in the United States, but Civil War shows us that it's not entirely outside of the realm of possibility.
Finally, at the climax of the story, the Western Forces are launching a final offensive on D.C. where most of the Government and military have already surrendered and the only ones who are left defending the President are a few "do or die soldiers" and a handful of Secret Service agents. The Western Forces launch their attack on the White House and during the fighting, the Presidential Limo drives away and the WF think that it is President Offerman attempting to make a last-ditch escape attempt. However, President Offerman is not in the limo when the WF soldiers open fire upon it and instead there is a woman, likely the First Lady, and several bodyguards. And so, the Western Forces realize that it was all a sneaky trick and a plot to buy President Offerman time to try and escape.
The team of journalists that we, the viewers, have been following this whole time, then head inside of the White House to try and score an exclusive interview with President Offerman before the Western Forces kill him. However, the Western Forces get the same idea to head inside of the White House and the idea of killing the President rather than capturing him.
President Offerman, desperate to survive, sends one of his representatives to try and convince the WF to allow him to go into exile, but they gun the representative, an unarmed and genuinely scared woman, to the ground. A firefight between the WF and what remains of the Secret Service ensues and the Western Forces find President Offerman hiding underneath his desk in the Oval Office.
Just as they are about to kill him, one of the journalists, Joel, stops them and asks President Offerman for a quote. President Offerman, now stripped of all of his power as President and reduced to a man just trying to survive, simply begs "Please, don't let them kill me." It is a quote that Joel finds satisfying and he allows the Western Forces to execute President Offerman in cold blood.
Finally, Jessie, the young photographer who has been forced to greatly mature by the 2nd American Civil War, takes a photograph that develops when the end credits begin and it is of smiling WF soldiers posing over the fresh corpse of President Offerman.
As can obviously be seen, each and every faction in Civil War have been nothing but war criminals: The Loyalists commit air strikes against American citizens. The Florida Alliance execute enemy soldiers even if injured. Xenophobic militias execute anyone who is not from America and finally, the Western Forces don't hesitate to gun down an innocent woman and to execute the President without a proper trial.
As for the Western Forces themselves, they could've placed President Offerman on trial for whatever war crimes that he has committed in the Civil War. True, it would probably be a kangaroo court, but it would at least paint the Western Forces as valiant and noble liberators who overthrew a corrupt President and returned democracy to America. Sadly, the Western Forces are anything but that, as I strongly doubt that now that they control Washington D.C. and will no doubt give themselves a new named like "The American Federation" or "The New United States of America", they will be interested in any way in rebuilding the country.
More likely, now that the Loyalists have been defeated, the secessionists will turn on each other and fight one another for many years to come. The United Nations, who no doubt relocated to another city like London, Paris, or maybe even Beijing, will declare that enough is enough and will deploy a joint invasion force to restore peace and stability to America by force.
Civil War is not about what started the Civil War, or who was responsible for it, it is about the Civil War itself and about how a 2nd Civil War, regardless of how it began, would be the end of the United States of America in it's entirety. In fact, when the first trailer came out, I commented "If California and Texas are working together to overthrow this President, then bloody hell, he must have been ten times worse than Trump and Hoover combined. In other words, this version of America is doomed."
And what do you know, I was right.

Asking senior yacht crew who have relocated from their home country to share their experiences and opinions on where someone might look to make a new life.
I’m British, early thirties, no commitments in the UK w the exception of an Airbnb apartment for investment/tax purposes, fairly solitary so distance from UK isn’t important as I only visit once per year or so.
I’m looking for a better quality of life than the UK can provide in terms of outdoor activities/adventures, cost of living, relative security, social life etc.
I like nature, mountains, forrests, wildlife, dirt biking, hiking, water sports, skiing, all the usual. I am not bilingual but have a good grasp of Latin languages, I will certainly commit to learning the language wherever I end up settling as best I can.
I am planning to tour South Africa, Sri Lanka Romania, Argentina and Thailand as I have made some good friends from/living in those countries already and I like what I hear.

Anyone have experience with "In2Care Mosquito Station"
So in the process of doing a whole lot of native plant gardens on my property (Well 70/30) Attempting to seek mosquito control that also doesn't wipe everything else out.
Seen some of those large CO2 and odor emitters that burn propane, but mixed reviews and mixed on quality long term.
And before people start in: On "Oh just do X" /start of rant you can ignore if not one of these people.
1. I live in close proximity to others... including people with a pool or unmanaged wild backyards. So treating the water I can't really control
2. Live near a giant retaining pond near as I can tell unmanaged by the town or county.
3. Bats houses would only work near some parks and soccer/other sports fields near me... and it's not like bats JUST MOVE IN RIGHT AWAY. (Also projects conducted/research never show true effective control... Because bats prefer other insects first)
4. I'd love dragon flys too, but again... Think about it for a second. (Do you even know how long dragon fly larva stage is? and you need a shit ton of them.)
5. XYZ type bird. Chickens and Guinea fowl in close proximity to neighbors, and their effectiveness is over sold. (If they were really that great don't you think every place in Africa, south American, and Asia would just have flocks of chickens all over the place.)
6. Use of fans outdoors. This I can control, but patio etc isn't finished yet... But will be done.

An exciting trailer has been released for "Pursuit" in a big reveal.
Meet Brogan, a 20something year old aloof drifter who experiences a change in character and decides to enter the thrilling and dangerous world of "danger photography", which sees him doing anything from chasing dangerous cop pursuits and even dangerous fugitives or wanted suspects to chasing celebrities or anybody worth filming. Snapping pictures or taking videos with a wide range of gadgets (handhelds, wearables, implants, retinals, you name it), Brogan begins to rake in the cash and the views, but has to be careful not to be apprehended by the authorities.
The game is set in the fictional US megalopolis of "Memorial County" and although we are not actually overtly told where exactly Memorial County actually is, we do see tons of stop signs and horizontal traffic lights and by the layout of the extra-wide streets and boulevards and architecture and lack of mountains, it's fairly evident that we're somewhere in Texas (and not Florida or Louisiana or Nebraska or Wisconsin, for example), although this is never actually overtly revealed to the player.
Because "Danger Photography" involves keeping up with the action wherever it takes Brogan, this may involve breaking laws such as traffic laws, so Brogan has to be somewhat careful to conceal his identity at times and he should try his best not to run over bystanders and innocent pedestrians and be hunted for committing vehicular homicide or manslaughter for example.
In this alternate future, tech implants also exist, so things like cybernetic implants and "retinals" exist and Brogan can sometimes record with his retinals.
But Brogan's career doesn't just see him chasing thrilling cop pursuits and celebrities and VIPs; he also encounters the weird and the wacky, with some missions even closely resembling scenes from the 2012 movie "Chronicle", as Brogan's new "career" also sees him turn investigator as well.

Less dangerous missions and activities include running into bikers and up-and-coming rockstars and country musicians in random diners and dive bars off highways as well as strange tourists who seem to have travelled well beyond popular tourist routes.
Brogan may also come across things that interest him which are not so glamorous and thrilling: such as missing persons reports or crazy murder cases which see him mired in danger and mystery.
At least five companies are also confirmed to be advertising their products in the game: Lenovo's Motorola Mobility has featured two of its smartphones in the game (Motorola Edge 50 Pro and Motorola Edge 40 Neo) and Brogan is regularly seen using a Motorola Edge 50 Pro (which appears to be his favorite personal smartphone).
StripeStorm Leisure Gear, Inc also advertises its Paradiso range of skateboards, with Brogan sometimes seen riding the Paradiso V12 and Paradiso Rockstar V4 skateboards. (It helps to note that Brogan has various modes of transportation available - and he can drive, walk, run, rollerskate, use skateboards, cycle and ride motorbikes etc).
Apple's newest gadget, the Apple Watch Zeus F11 is also advertised, with commericals regularly featured on huge digital billboards across the megalopolis as well as many, many of Memorial County's residents seen regularly using the Apple Watch Zeus F11. BMW's I800i electric sedan (extended wheelbase) as well as its Manitoba G01 diesel sedan (extended wheelbase) are also advertised in the game, with NPCs regularly seen driving them. Many of the other vehicle models featured in the game are of fictional brands created exclusively for the game but clearly based on real models of real car brands.
Five Guys restaurants are also seen dotted across Memorial County and although there are other, fictional fast food restaurants on the map, players eventually count that there are 21 Five Guys restaurants on the game's map, giving you an idea of just how enormous Memorial County actually is (it has more Five Guys restaurants in it than in the entire state of Wisconsin in real life). Real and officially-licensed Five Guys menus and prices are also featured, which may be just a little too realistic for some.
Consumer supplement company Zeus Nutrition Enterprises also has commercials in the game and NPCs are regularly seen using its supps or talking about them amongst each other. Fictional sports stars in the game are also seen advertising them on TV networks and across digital billboards. An exciting trailer has been released for "Pursuit" in a big reveal.
Meet Brogan, a 20something year old aloof drifter who experiences a change in character and decides to enter the thrilling and dangerous world of "danger photography", which sees him doing anything from chasing dangerous cop pursuits and even dangerous fugitives or wanted suspects to chasing celebrities or anybody worth filming. Snapping pictures or taking videos with a wide range of gadgets (handhelds, wearables, implants, retinals, you name it), Brogan begins to rake in the cash and the views, but has to be careful not to be apprehended by the authorities.
The game is set in the fictional US megalopolis of "Memorial County" and although we are not actually overtly told where exactly Memorial County actually is, we do see tons of stop signs and horizontal traffic lights and by the layout of the extra-wide streets and boulevards and architecture and lack of mountains, it's fairly evident that we're somewhere in Texas (and not Florida or Louisiana or Nebraska or Wisconsin, for example), although this is never actually overtly revealed to the player.
Because "Danger Photography" involves keeping up with the action wherever it takes Brogan, this may involve breaking laws such as traffic laws, so Brogan has to be somewhat careful to conceal his identity at times and he should try his best not to run over bystanders and innocent pedestrians and be hunted for committing vehicular homicide or manslaughter for example.
In this alternate future, tech implants also exist, so things like cybernetic implants and "retinals" exist and Brogan can sometimes record with his retinals.
But Brogan's career doesn't just see him chasing thrilling cop pursuits and celebrities and VIPs; he also encounters the weird and the wacky, with some missions even closely resembling scenes from the 2012 movie "Chronicle", as Brogan's new "career" also sees him turn investigator as well.
Also featured in the game is an Area 51-type area on the outskirts of the enormous Memorial County: Robinson Air Force Base and Advanced Research Facility. Weird goings-on have been reported in and around the base, with people regularly reported missing and even hitchikers vanishing on the nearby fictional in-game I-112 (Interstate 112).
Less dangerous missions and activities include running into bikers and up-and-coming rockstars and country musicians in random diners and dive bars off highways as well as strange tourists who seem to have travelled well beyond popular tourist routes.
Brogan may also come across things that interest him which are not so glamorous and thrilling: such as missing persons reports or crazy murder cases which see him mired in danger and mystery.
At least five companies are also confirmed to be advertising their products in the game: Lenovo's Motorola Mobility has featured two of its smartphones in the game (Motorola Edge 50 Pro and Motorola Edge 40 Neo) and Brogan is regularly seen using a Motorola Edge 50 Pro (which appears to be his favorite personal smartphone).

Many of the other vehicle models featured in the game are of fictional brands created exclusively for the game but clearly based on real models of real car brands.
Five Guys restaurants are also seen dotted across Memorial County and although there are other, fictional fast food restaurants on the map, players eventually count that there are 21 Five Guys restaurants on the game's map, giving you an idea of just how enormous Memorial County actually is (it has more Five Guys restaurants in it than in the entire state of Wisconsin in real life).

We Will Mark UnFreedom Day in Durban on 21 April
There is no freedom for the poor in South Africa. Thirty years after Nelson Mandela became president and we were told that freedom had come the poor and marginalised in shack settlements, hostels, white farms and former Bantustans have nothing to celebrate.
The rich have become richer and the poor have become poorer. Far more people live in shacks than in 1994. We remain landless and without work. Millions are without even the most basic services, such as water, sanitation and refuse removal. Millions are hungry. We continue to live in terrible violence. We continue to be violently repressed by the politicians, the police and private security companies. For thirty years our humanity has been vandalized in the name of freedom. The lives and dignity of the poor mean nothing in the eyes of the ANC.
The ANC serves an elite in the name of the people while continuing to oppress and repress the people. It continues to rob the people.
Under the ANC it has become a crime to be poor. We are taken as beneath the law, as people who can be robbed, assaulted, dispossessed and murdered with impunity. We regularly face illegal evictions at gunpoint and armed raids on our settlements. Rubbish is regularly dumped in our communities sending a clear message that we ourselves are seen as less than human, as rubbish.
Under the ANC we have paid the price for land and dignity in blood. Many of our comrades have been murdered by the police, private security and the izinkabi. Comrades in other struggles and organisations have also been killed. Striking miners were massacred in Marikana in 2012. The politic of blood must be brought to an end.
Our movement has been marking UnFreedom Day since 2006 when we decided to contest the lie that real freedom has been achieved. We refused to allow the politicians to bus us into the stadiums to tell us that we were free when it was clear that we are not free. On UnFreedom Day we insist that the struggle for land, housing and dignity continues, that the struggle for freedom continues. We also remember and celebrate our fallen comrades who have given their lives in the struggle for real freedom.
This year we will hold our annual Unfreedom Day rally at the eNkanini Sports Ground in Mayville, Durban, on 21 April 2024 at 9 am.
This year the focus of UnFreedom Day is on the 2024 General Elections and a question that has become urgent: 'How can we use our vote as a tactical tool to advance the interests of the poor and marginalised?'.
We will present The People’s Minimum Demands, a list of twenty minimum demands that we have put to all the parties seeking our vote. These demands come out of a process of collective discussion including thousands of people in hundreds of meetings.
We will also make a special announcement on the position of the movement regarding the General Elections on 29 May. We are clear and unashamed that we want the ANC removed from power. The ANC has kept us poor, denied us land and dignity, stolen from the poor and killed us when we have stood up for our humanity. It must be removed.
We are calling on the progressive organisations of the impoverished, the marginalised and the working class to join us at this very important gathering as we reject fake freedom. We will not be able to overcome oppression if we are not united and strong. We will not be able to overcome oppression if we do not build the democratic power of the oppressed from below. We will not be able to develop and manage a credible electoral instrument for the oppressed if we are not organised from below at a mass scale.
We will not be free until the question of land is resolved in our country, and until it is resolved in the interests of the majority.
Land, wealth and power must be fairly shared, and the dignity of all people must be respected.

How to look for jobs and opportunities abroad?
Hello everybody,
I dont know if that is the right place to ask that, but I will briefly summarize my situation and hopefully, you can help me. :)
I recently broke up with my girlfriend. That is the reason I finally make the decision of moving to another country and setting new foundation for my life. I am Polish, living in Denmark for past 4,5 years to study. I graduated last year and have been unemployed since. My education is service, hospitality & tourism management, and sports & events management. I have no experience in my field of studies, and quite frankly I don't know if I want to work in these industries in my future. I want to work creatively, I love coming up with ideas, drawing, painting, writing, creating, also digitally. I have almost no savings, I also consider going to "workaway" experience.
I want to move to another country - preferably warm one. Does not have to be in Europe, South/Central America, Asia or Africa work too. How do I handle the logistics? I do not know how to start and get a grasp of which destination to choose. How do I search for job abroad? AITAH For Having Fantastic Sex with My Virgin Supermodel Wife?

The biggest and oldest minority in the country has had 0 players play for its national team in the national sport in the biggest sport in the world. A lot of people blame the South Asian community but academia suggests it is more complicated.
" Lefties and liberals must criticise conservative Islam" I discuss the need for leftists/liberals (like myself) to criticise conservative Islam. If we don't, I believe, people will be drawn towards the far right. Conservative Islam cannot be ignored as an issue. It is creating tensions and if we don't call it out white far right racists will be the only voice.
"A racism fuelled identity crisis has led to desi diaspora to lose its mind" Only 44% of British Asians said same sex marriage was acceptable. What was most shocking though is attitudes do not differ across generations. I discuss why - I think it's an identity crisis leading to a caricature of our culture.
"Why I am an agnostic atheist and a humanist and why it matters" I discuss my belief system. The media always portrays us as religious (and often religious nutcases doing bad things) but 25% of Brit Asians and 18% of Indians were not religious. Is the media reflecting that? No.
Demonisation of desi men. I discuss how news media and tv/film have demonised desi men specifically and how we have been gaslighted even be lefties/liberals that we can't complain due to collective responsibility for actions or supposed actions of other desi men, which is literally racism.
How everyday racism works in the UK - stereotypes, names and more. In 2024, overt racism is highly unlikely. It's a societal taboo. However, this does not mean racism has gone. It's just become subtle. As Asians we have to constantly prove our humanity ; every time we meet someone new we don't know what stereotypes they'll have of us and we have to prove them wrong. The media has portrayed us in a 2D way and has seemed to have forgotten that we live full lives. Our names are a big one too. Every single time I introduce myself its tiring. I am not blaming anyone, but what is unacceptable is people just guessing my name and getting it wrong and not even asking.
The history you were taught is lies - Decolonising History (Americas, Africa, India, China). I talk about how we are miseducated in this country and why that is. I base my work on scholary work and discuss how indigenous American, African, Indian and Chinese history has been whitewashed when in fact all these areas of the globe had far more advanced civilisations than we are taught in public narrative. The reason is obvious; to not teach it upholds white supremacist ideas and classist ideas so is in the interest of the British establishment to keep it like this.
Desis have dug their own grave with their silence about racism - speak out. British Asians generally receive racism but do not talk about it and pull down those who do. As a result, our history in the UK has been lost/badly remembered, we have horrific relative representation in our media, the public do not know our struggles and nothing is changing. If you say and do nothing those who do it will keep going; fighting back will stop it. Basic Pavlovian conditioning.

Field report from our roadtrip from New Orleans to New York City
When I asked for tips for our road trip (wife, three kids, me) from NOLA to NYC, I got a lot of suggestions that helped me. I therefore wanted to share my experiences in order to be able to help some people on future trips.
In advance: it was great and I would plan the road trip almost exactly the same way again.
We arrived at JFK on March 21st. To our slight dismay, it was still very cold there. We therefore moved around a lot in the short time we had until we left for NOLA (2 nights). We explored Queens and Brooklyn on foot. Queens in particular is ignored by many tourists. We found that Trinciti in Queens probably has the best Trinidadian food outside of T&T.
Then we went to NOLA by plane where we started the road trip. Our vehicle was a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, the ideal car for a quick start at traffic lights. Our other overnight stops (each one between 1 and 4 nights) were Gulf Shores (Alabama), Birmingham (Alabama), Huntsville (Alabama), Nashville Tennesse, Seymour (Tennessee), Asheville North Carolina), Banner Elk (North Carolina), Waynesboro (Virgina), Washington (DC ) and Manhattan (New York)
What were the highlights?
New Orleans:
The architecture is unique. We lived near Audubon Park. One house is more beautiful than the other. The villas are very individually designed, but somehow fit together well. The final touch is provided by the rustic vegetation. The French Quarter also has its own charm. Of course we tried Poboy, Muffaletta and Beignet and the latter in particular are damn delicious. The evening was great in the Musical Legends Park. The band played great jazz and we were the most enthusiastic guests. My wife also had a lot of wishes, all of which the band was able to implement. Of course we also put a few bills in the bucket.
Nashville:
What a crazy party mile. My wife and I found it almost a bit too much on the first evening. However, our alcohol level was also at zero and that of the others, well I don't think it needs to be mentioned. On the second day we explored the city (Capitol, Hall of Fame, farmers market, sports museum, etc.) and then went back to Broadway. There's a lot going on here even at lunchtime. It's crazy how many thousands of musicians earn their living here. Sometimes three bands play in one bar. There is even live music in shoe stores. We then went to Jason Aldean Restaurant and listened to Cole Phillips and Jackie Verna covering songs. Great time there.

Such a nice stop in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The city has nice restaurants, even a small, free art museum, a theater, brewery, etc. But it's not as uber-hip as Asheville, for example. You can also go on great hiking trips in the area. Since the area is quite high, we even had snow here again at the beginning of April.
The Blue Ridge Mountains:
It was just great to drive through here. The views on both the BRP and Skyline Drive are simply fantastic. The trees barely had any leaves and a large part of the BRP in NC was still closed due to snowfall. Still, what an honor to have driven this way.
Nature in general:
Burgess Falls, Linville Falls, the Mississippi/Alabama/Florida coast. The drive through rural and forested Alabama, the Natchez Trace Parkway. The lack of density in the USA simply brings with it a beautiful solitude that one is not used to in Europe.
Washington DC:
The city is simply very pleasant for tourists to visit. The Washington Mall is easy to walk around and of course it's great to actually have all the monuments you see in movies in front of you. The museums are really great and they are all free. We went to the Renwick Gallery and the Museum of African American History and both are highly recommended. Of course, my kids especially loved the Jefferson Library for Instagram selfies. The solar eclipse was the icing on the cake of our stay in DC.
New York:
Of course always a highlight. Since we had a total of 6 days in NYC, we made it to all boroughs of the city. We visited the Bronx for a Yankees game. The children especially thought it was great. They were the loudest "Go Yankees, go!" callers in the stadium. I drank the most expensive beer of my life for 18 dollars, but well, even that's an experience, right :-).
Things we liked during our trip:
Buc-cee’s: the hype is real, lol. TBH I think the food is overrated. Especially the beaver nuggets - who eats this, it is pure sugar. But overall it is a nice place for stopping buy, use the restrooms, fill you up you car and your cup for little money.
Gas prices: Don't complain about expensive gasoline. Believe me, dear Americans, you are very, very well served. Therefore, despite the long journey, we spent very little on gas.
Road conditions: For example, I have heard many Americans complain about the poor infrastructure in the USA. To my surprise, I found most of the roads in excellent condition. Even many small country roads appeared to be freshly tarred. The width of the roads is usually much wider than in Europe anyway, and there's no other way with all the trucks.
Public restrooms: They are virtually everywhere, in parks, at gas stations, larger supermarkets. In Germany none of these have them.
Dollywood: Kids loved it, me as well, great rollercoaster rides, good shows. It really is the hillbilly Disneyland :-)
Pigeon Forge: Fascinating place
Things we didn’t like:

Our car got towed, parked in the wrong spot and it wasn’t there next day. I figured it happens quite fast in the US. In Germany it is more when you block the entrance of a fire station but not when you park overnight at a supermarket… Well 250 Dollars later we had it back.
Tipflation: Of course, we obediently adhered to the 20 percent tip recommendation in restaurants with on-site service. However, I found it a bit cheeky that everyone else also asked for tips automatically. But if I have to order myself and pick up my food at the counter, which service I reward with a tip. Above all, I don't know in advance whether the service is good or whether the food is even good. The catering industry should simply pay people decently, then they could save us from the hassle of begging for tips.
Stop signs: OMG you have so many of them, do you really obey them?
Waste production: I am far from being a climate activist or something but the amount of plastic that is given out to land in the trash can a few minutes later shocked me. Like bags in the supermarket (Why put a gallon of milk that has a handle into a bag???). One way plastic cups even when you clearly stated you don’t want the order as to go ( I mean they don’t even have porcelain tableware). Put a plastic cover on a plate when you said you want to eat in the restaurant. It was really next level over there.
Shopping groceries was quite expensive.
Train honking in Birmingham. It is called the Train City for a reason. Could not get sleep the first night as our house was right by a train crossing. Moved out next night for a further stop in Huntsville. Folks going to Birmingham. Check the exact location of your stay.
Things that surprised us:
The amount of Waffle Houses and Baptist churches in the South. We saw the latter sometimes every mile even in extremely rural areas, for example on the way from Bay Minette to Selma in Alabama. How do you manage the maintenance of the buildings when there can only be very few members due to the low population density?
Being the only European tourist on our way from New Orleans to DC. We didn’t expect to meet a lot of fellow germans but seeing no one over such a long time really surprised us. Normally you see them everywhere where you travel, be it Thailand, India Africa or elsewhere. But the US seep south really does not seem to be on a tourist landscape for people outside the US. Something we actually liked.
The level of de facto segregation that still exists: Like in DC we were in borough called Benning. In the four days we stayed there I did not see a single white person. I had not problems with that, to be clear. It was just very strange, like I would have been beamed to Central Africa without knowing about it. The house we lived in was very nice actually and the neighbors were nice!
Not really a surprise but still worth mentioning. The almost unlimited number of fast food chains that don’t exist in Europe. Btw. We made it to 9 of them: HattieB`s, Waffle House, Cava, Wendy’s, Panda Express, Chick Fil A, Raising Canes, Bojangles, Shake Shack.
OK stop. I have already written too much. Hope this can help others who are planning a similar trip, especially those that are also coming from abroad.
You guys really have a great country. Treat it well and treat each other well (especially looking at the madness that comes with the Biden/Trump battle). I hope to come back soon and explore another part of the states.
