Jesse Marsch believes now is ‘the right moment’ to become Canadian men’s coach

SportsNets - Mon, 05/13/2024 - 18:55

Being in charge of the Canadian men’s soccer team has historically been considered somewhat of a poisoned chalice. But that didn’t stop Jesse Marsch from grasping it with both of his hands.

Marsch, a 50-year-old native of Wisconsin, was formally introduced as the new head coach of the men’s side on Monday, taking over from interim boss Mauro Biello who has overseen the team since John Herdman’s departure last summer.

Herdman was the most successful bench boss in the history of the men’s team, helping it qualify for its first World Cup in 36 years and reach an all-time high of No. 33 in the FIFA world rankings. But not even the lure of coaching in a home World Cup in 2026 was enough for Herdman to overlook the chaos going on around him.

Tired of the political infighting, labour disputes and financial crises that plagued Canada Soccer during his tenure, he walked away from the job and left the organization in the lurch as it prepared to co-host the biggest sporting event on the planet.

Enter Marsch, an MLS star of some repute who won a pair of Supporters’ Shields and three MLS Cups during his playing days before hanging up his cleats in 2010.

He successfully moved into coaching soon after and was named MLS coach of the year in 2015 with the New York Red Bulls. Europe soon beckoned, and he guided Red Bull Salzburg to back-to-back Austrian league and cup doubles, as well as a pair of group stage appearances in the UEFA Champions League. He also served as an assistant coach under Bob Bradley on the U.S. men’s team that reached the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Marsch’s two most recent coaching stints at RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and English club Leeds United were both short and spectacularly fizzled out. He’s been out of work for over a year and the smell of those failures still linger in the air, so the temptation here is to paint his appointment by Canada Soccer as Ted Lasso-esque.

But Marsch is not some soccer carpetbagger. He has genuine ties to Canadian soccer having coached the Montreal Impact (now known as CF Montreal) during its 2012 MLS expansion campaign. When he parted ways with Montreal after that first season, he reached out to Canada Soccer about the vacant men’s team coaching job at the time, but he was rebuffed. Nearly 12 years later, he finds himself in the hottest of hot seats in Canadian soccer.

“I had made a plea to Team Canada and the Canadian association shortly after my time in Montreal to be considered as the national team coach, so it has been on my radar… I just really believe that this was the right moment in time for me, for this team, for Canada Soccer, for a home World Cup,” Marsch said on Monday.

He later added: “I know Canada a bit. I coached there. I lived here and I understand the country, the multiculturalism … The things I know about the people and their desire and passion for the game helped me understand what this responsibility is, helped me understand how to help lead this country into the home World Cup.”

To his credit, Marsch is going into this new venture with his eyes wide open and fully cognizant of the many off-the-field challenges that have sadly become inherent with being the coach of the Canadian men’s team.

No doubt that he’ll have taken notice of the unceremonious way that Herdman parted ways with Canada Soccer, the turnover of personnel at the highest levels of the sport’s national governing body, and the player strife that has furiously raged like wildfire over the years. The lack of unity within Canadian soccer at various levels has held back the sport from growing and reaching its full potential.

With a calm demeanour, Marsch hopes to be a unifying force and get everyone on the same page by leading by example from his new pulpit.

“When I was in Montreal, I could see that Canadian soccer was in some ways fractured. And there were different provinces and different teams in different places that had different influences. And I think a big part of our mission moving forward is to make sure that, especially leading into this home World Cup, that we find a way to unify everyone,” Marsch offered.

There was one moment from Marsch’s 40-minute Zoom call with reporters on Monday that stood out in particular, as it offered some insight into the type of man that Canada Soccer has hired.

“Without the talent in this group, it would be a different conversation,” Marsch said in reference to the team he has inherited.

In essence, the prospect of coaching a golden generation of young talent that includes Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan excited Marsch and was too good of an opportunity to pass up. But, if we were talking about an average Canadian squad that largely relied on MLS players, he probably wouldn’t have even taken Canada Soccer’s phone call.

You wouldn’t expect that type of bracing candour from someone on their first day on the job. But such refreshing honesty provided a valuable glimpse into Marsch’s personality and why Canada Soccer picked him over the other candidates, both domestic and international, that they interviewed for the job. Far from bombastic or caustic, Marsch is, nonetheless, a straight shooter with little patience for nonsense and someone who tells it like it is.

He’s also someone whose views of the game and how it should be played should perfectly mesh with a Canadian team noted for its athleticism, power and pace.

“The way that I think about football and the qualities of this player pool, I think fit really well and will allow us to develop the team even further than where it’s already been, which I think has been very successful,” Marsch said.

He later added: “Some of the raw athleticism in team speed is obvious, right? And I like to play the game in transition. I like to be dynamic. I like to impose our will upon the opponent in all phases of the game. And I think that this player pool has both athleticism and intelligence. And then obviously football quality. But the combination of intelligence and athleticism will provide us with an opportunity to be able to compete against the best teams in the world.”

Marsch, a former Princeton graduate, was very much a thinking-man’s midfielder on the pitch during his playing career, noted for his on-field intelligence and cerebral nature.

That level of thoughtfulness is something he’s carried over into his coaching career. While not looking to reinvent the wheel or force Canada into a major tactical shift, he recognizes the team can’t always put its collective head down and run straight at opponents, something that Herdman was guilty of during his tenure. Sometimes, you have to go to “Plan B” and make adjustments.

“Obviously when you’re playing against the best teams in the world, they often don’t have huge glaring weaknesses and the talent that they have from an individual perspective can be at the highest level that we’ve seen in the modern game,” Marsch explained.

“But the key for us will be collectively to understand how to be at our best, how to manipulate the way that we want to play against opponents, and in the end, challenge everything that they want to do. Make them uncomfortable, make them have to deal with our team speed and athleticism and intelligence.

“It will take time for it all to come together completely in the way that I want it to. But I really, really believe that this is a good fit for me and for this player pool.”

Avalanche’s Valeri Nichushkin suspended without pay for six months

SportsNets - Mon, 05/13/2024 - 18:46

Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin has been placed in Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program and will be suspended for a minimum of six months without pay, the league announced Monday.

After six months, Nichushkin, 29, will be eligible to apply for reinstatement.

The forward has appeared in all eight of the Avalanche’s playoff games, scoring nine goals and one assist for 10 points. In 54 regular-season games this year, he had 28 goals and 53 points.

Nichushkin entered the Player Assistance Program for the first time in January. He was away from the team for two months and returned on March 8.

The Player Assistance Program has four stages: Stage 1 is the first in-patient treatment, which is entirely voluntary. Stage 2 is following a violation of Stage 1, wherein the entrant is suspended without pay during the active phase of treatment. An entrant is placed in Stage 3 following a violation of Stage 2, and is suspended without pay for a minimum of six months. After three violations, an entrant is placed in Stage 4, which carries a one-year suspension without pay and no guarantee of reinstatement.

The program was established in 1996 as a venture to aid NHL players and their families through struggles with mental health, substance abuse and other issues.

Jonathan Drouin is expected to enter the lineup in Nichushkin’s place in the lineup for Game 4 against the Dallas Stars. Drouin has been out since suffering a lower-body injury in the regular-season finale on April 18.
