'You'd rather just deal with the referee on the day' - Antonio on VAR

Wed, 05/01/2024 - 09:59

West Ham striker Michail Antonio wants VAR to be removed from the Premier League, as the panel on the Footballer's Football Podcast reflected on another officiating talking-point in Chelsea's draw with Aston Villa last weekend. Chelsea had what would have been a late winner at Villa Park ruled out after the video assistant referee recommended a review of the on-field decision to allow the goal. In Sweden, they've voted against VAR because they've seen how it's been run in the Premier League and don't want a part of it.

History needs a rewrite if play-offs beckon for Leeds

Wed, 05/01/2024 - 09:50

Regardless of whether Leeds United beat Southampton on Saturday at Elland Road, Ipswich Town will guarantee promotion to the Premier League by avoiding defeat at home by Huddersfield Town - who are effectively relegated because of their negative goal difference being significantly worse than their closest rivals. The Saints have known they were consigned to the play-offs since a 5-0 drubbing at champions Leicester last week, a result they followed up with a home defeat by Stoke.

Wed, 05/01/2024 - 09:49

It is a rare and perhaps rather unfortunate turn of events that Tottenham must face their two most dreaded opponents in the space of a few days. Sunday's derby with Arsenal was as usual; compelling, startling and mystifying. Only Spurs could play quite well in the first half, to then find themselves 3-0 down but not quite hit those heights again after the break and nearly scramble a draw.
