I go to a wealthy high school in San Diego, and you have to take 15+ AP classes to be in the top 10%. How do you do that? Everyone who gets into the UCs, Cal Poly SLO, SDSU, and similar schools have to take that many APs and do extracurriculars that are significant too. It sucks going to a wealthy high school where expectations are so high

I (20M) had been with my girlfriend (22F) for 2 years. We currently share an apartment with my dad and have a lease for the next 5 months. Right when we moved in there were problems. My family isn’t the most cleanest of folks, so the lack of doing dishes and picking up trash on my dads part really irked me and my girlfriend. On top of that, he started breaking her things. He broke a mirror, an action figure, and a cup of hers (on accident) and barely apologized to her for them. I tried to get everyone on the same page (nobody likes being a middle man) but in an argument with my girlfriend I said “I’m holding things together for the both of us”. It was a poor judgement of words and it set her off on a tangent. She told me she wants to move out, she told me I lack self esteem and drive, and she essentially called me a pushover for not standing up for her or her feelings enough. She said she didn’t feel seen, and I assured her I never want her to feel that way and I’m sorry that she did. She said a break would be best.

We agreed on a 2 week break but one week in she told me she just wasn’t feeling it and she broke up with me. She said I wasn’t giving her the space she desired on the break, and I admit I was texting her a bit much. On top of all of this, we’re still living under the same roof. She says that she changed her mind about leaving because she knows my dad and I wouldn’t be able to afford the rent (we live in San Diego so this is very much true).

When she broke up with me I was gutted. I had just taken us to Philly 2 weeks prior for Wrestlemania and I paid for the entire trip. I thought we could do anything together. Right after she broke up with me she tells me that she still loves me, but I have a lot to work on, and maybe in the future she can see us getting back together. She also said that since we’re living under the same roof she’s like us to still be friends.

So here I am, living with my ex girlfriend, who still loves me (and I love her), who hates my dad, and still wants to be my friend. I’ve been going to therapy and tried to turn my attitude toward things around, but I’m just kind of stuck what to do and I’m severely depressed. Any advice? What should I do?

Yesterday I found out I failed the Feb 2024 CA bar exam. I have already signed up for the July one. Unfortunately my job is not keeping me on as a post bar so I am in search for a new post bar job. I am feeling overwhelmed and feeling like everything is falling apart since I failed the exam. I would love advice and recommendations on where I can look for a post bar job since I feel like most places stopped hiring already or have closed their application. Looking for in the San Diego area and remote positions in CA. Open to all areas of law but have experience in Criminal and PI. I also have experience in family law by doing retraining order and working in DV cases. I would really appreciate your advice and recommendations in advance.

The below is based loosely on the r/AdvancedRunning race report templates, and aims to broaden the information and discussion featured in r/rowing by providing more oxygen to club rowing (and more actual club rowing worth discussing.) Thus, I present you a narrative summary of the first* annual Club Cup, featuring the Club Cup and the People's Varsity Championship as its maiden two events.

Date: Saturday, April 27th, 2024

Distance: 2,000m (with, you know, a turn; mercifully not a 1k. Floating starts.)

Location: The Schuyllkill River, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Teams launching out of boathouse row, with guests (Baltimore, Potomac) graciously borrowing from generous local programs (we, Potomac, were loaned two eights by Penn. Thanks a ton, Quakers!)

Host: University Barge Club, and thanks especially to Kevin Kennedy of UBC for kicking this off or, according to some, re-igniting an effort begun in 2017 - when a strictly PBC vs. University Barge iteration of this event, or at least this event in spirit, was hosted (see here for grainy footage, and here for the trophy which was by the time of departure yet to be located.)

Events: At 2 p.m., the People's Varsity Championship, contested between hosts University Barge Club, Malta Boat Club, Fairmont Rowing Association, and guests Potomac Boat Club. Then, at 2:15 p.m., the premiere Club Cup, contested between hosts University Barge Club, Fairmont Rowing Association, and visitors Potomac Boat Club and Baltimore Rowing Club. Worth noting that Hartford's Riverfront Recapture had been invited and was planning to send a crew, but struggled with flooding and boathouse access in the preceding weeks.

Context: There's little to no 2,000m racing available on the East Coast between Canadian Henley (August) and the Schuylkill Navy Regatta (beginning of June.) Most years we - Potomac - will head out to San Diego Crew Classic to scratch the itch. We have tried on several occasions to finagle an invitation to the masters events at the Opening Day Regatta, though they politely remind us each year that the event is oriented towards Pacific Northwest teams such as the University of Wisconsin (Leavenworth, Washington) and the Italian Rowing Federation (Couer d'Alene, Idaho.) But University Barge Club made great showings in the Thames Challenge Cup at Henley in 2015 and 2016, hyped up as a "true club" by the announcers, and though we (Potomac) didn't, uh, fare quite so well in our trip in 2018 still there's a mutual recognition that hey, wouldn't it be nice to be able to race full events against other clubs from time to time, and not an alphabet soup of age categories over 1,000 meters?

Goals: Both crews were selected and trained to win their respective events, as a first and second eight. Sometimes if we mix it up with colleges or as at the Crew Classic against very strong age handicapped crews, you have to handicap your own goals... beating the Navy 1v or 2v in scrimmage pieces not realistic for our top eight, but maybe hanging with the 3v/4v and perhaps sticking with the 2v for a bit and not getting dropped immediately. Or perhaps putting more than the handicap margin on Marin at SDCC (we did not.) But against University Barge Club, Fairmont Rowing Association (who have fielded a strong 40+ Masters Four at Head of the Charles and Independence Day Regatta that's beaten all but our highest priority fours), and Baltimore Rowing Club who we've had many duels against in recent years on our river and on theirs... well, this is by design an apples-to-apples race so anyone should have a reasonable shot at winning, even if it's a first go at it and some crews are more rolodex and some crews are more every morning squads.

Training: Well, we came off an okay winter of training indoors that transitioned to some surprisingly solid on-the-water efforts and then surprisingly good scrimmage results against the Navy heavies at the end of March and some good if not victorious performances at the San Diego Crew Classic. Turns out hiring a coach and not just doing it yourselves as several of the post-COVID seasons have required is a wise move. Coming off Navy and San Diego and of course after some erg tests there was a pretty good optic as to who would made up the backbone of each crew, though a few days of selection were run. Crews rowed several days prior fully intact, but when you add in all the days that 5, 6, or 7 out of the eventual 8 in each lineup were together it ends up being lots more meters together.

The Race: Thanks to University Barge for lending us their locker room and ergs for warmups, and Penn for lending us their hulls. We launched both crews to warm up to the top into decent, standard Schuyllkill spring conditions. A bit of breeze, a bit of current, sometimes felt like a current, times not actually that fast in the end. The People's Championship Eight went off first (video and drone footage here), showing us a strong first 500m we could watch from the chute. Seemed like they took quite.a bit early on, and capitalized on an early lead and a confident rhythm to finish up on the field with open water, and only a few seconds back from the time that the Club Cup winner would later post. In the Club Cup (video and drone footage of the Club Cup here), a strong start which gave us a couple seats' lead on the rest of the field gave way to a second 500m in which local coxswains clearly were able to stake out preferred conveyor belts of current. However, coming out of the turn and through the bridge, by the halfway mark we were rowing a far more confident rhtyhm and turned a length's lead on the field into several seats of open by the end. And then promptly steered right into Fairmont's lane (sorry guys) as we flopped around after finishing the race. As for actual times, uh... post them in comments. This was pretty informal stuff.

After the Race: pizza, pretzels, beers, and the presentation of trophies and declarations of friendship and comity at University Barge. Thanks again to UBC for hosting and Kevin Kennedy for pulling the whole thing together, as well as Martin Leonard for being the pointman from the PBC side. Thanks to Penn for helping out with equipment and Baltimore for also making the trip, and thanks to Malta and Fairmont for jumping in as well. Hope to see more entries and more racing next year!

Conclusion: Per Potomac Boat Club Men's Sweep co-captain Austin Treubert, "it was a great first step in legitimizing and building up the ‘true club’ rowing scene in the U.S. As we look to the future, having more formalized races only stands to raise the bar and push each club to be more competitive.”

TOR/WSH U 8.5 (.25 unit, alt line, DK): Since it's Saturday and I'll be out on the links enjoying life with the Professor, I won't be monitoring the weather. However, it seems like the winds will be blowing in D.C., which could suppress runs. I doubt the Nationals will score more than a couple of runs against Kevin Gausman. As for the Blue Jays, it's highly unlikely they will score six or more.

K. Gausman O 4.5 Ks (.5 unit, DK): This line seems low. Kevin Gausman might not have been as prolific with strikeouts as in previous years, but a line of 4.5 seems underestimating his potential.

OAK ML (.5 unit): The Marlins have bid farewell to two-time batting champion Luis Arraez, trading him to San Diego. If the Marlins were playing anyone else today, I'd be tempted to fade heavily.

P. Blackburn U 2.5 Earned Runs (.5 unit): Paul Blackburn, after an impressive start, has settled down but should still perform decently, with something like 6 IP and 2 ER seeming reasonable.

I am looking at colleges in California and I see that according to many rankings (national and state level) UC Santa Cruz is one of the lower tier state universities. I am from Colorado so I'm worried that going to an unknown university would hurt my chances back in my home state. I see that UC Merced is ranked significantly higher than UCSC and is considered more prestigous but how is that possible if that school is not even as old as UCSC?

UCSC (#82) is ranked very closely to CSU-Long Beach (#105) and CSU-San Diego State (#105). Does it make any difference if someone chooses UCSC over CSULB or SDSU because the rankings are very similar?
