[Jackson] ESPN’s Bobby Marks, a former Nets front office executive, said via text message on Thursday that he expects Martin to receive the full projected $12.8 million non taxpayer midlevel exception.

Thu, 04/25/2024 - 15:23

A front office official who works for another team concurred: “He’s got midlevel value,” the official said. “He can defend, he’s a winning player. He’s a solid rotation guy on a good team.”

What about Highsmith’s market value this summer?

“Highsmith I could see in the $8 to $10 million range,” Marks said, noting it’s “not a great free agent class.”

The official with another team put Highsmith’s annual value in the $5 million to $7 million range but wants to see how the playoffs play out.

“The rest of the playoffs will determine that to some extent,” the official said. “He’s shot the three well, had a good game last night. If he bombs out in the playoffs, people will remember that. He’s gotten better. Is the three-point shooting sustainable and real?”

Seriously, Why Does this Video Exist? WTF!!

Thu, 04/25/2024 - 15:20

It’s time to have a conversation. As a New York sports fan with ASD (NYK, NYG, NYR, and NY Mets), I cannot comprehend why this video exists or should be recommended to anyone on this sub. Before you Tree redditors try to downvote or question me on this if this is relatable to this sub, let me just say that this video from SML shows a horrible example of someone rooting for a team or player. And this originates from 2020 when the Heat went on an outstanding run to the Finals when this guy showed everyone he is a Jimmy Butler fan, not a Heat fan. For so long, he has worshipped him and every time the Heat lose in the playoffs he goes on depression mode and starts to believe the Heat/Jimmy Butler just do not have it in them. And him trying to help Jimmy Butler get over his coffee addiction seems to be unrealistic as his biggest problem right now is his MCL injury. Not only is that an example on being a toxic sports fan, but also a worst example of unrealistic values of being a player fan. I’m not trying to attack SML, the Miami Heat, Jimmy Butler or the SML staff, but anyone that sees the video should know what should be real or not real when being a fan of the sport, especially the first-timers trying to learn how their team is in the regular season and eventually the playoffs.

What do you consider to be the best/most iconic Seattle Sports moments?

Thu, 04/25/2024 - 13:50

I’m talking the moments that made/make you emotional, or a play call that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stick up; those epic sports occurences that will live on forever. In celebration of our rich sports history, I’d love to hear which moments stand out to you as all-time, unforgettable events!

Here are my top 9 in no particular order. Apologies for the recency bias and wordy post!

1995: The Double:

Just thinking about this play makes me miss Dave Niehaus so much. The man lived and breathed baseball, so for him to make this iconic call must have been the greatest thrill. In my opinion this is the best moment in Mariners history, and iconic to all of baseball. There’s not much sweeter than watching some of the biggest legends in Seattle Sports take the playoff series from the Yankees in the King Dome. Watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_7x_77DeSU

2014: The Nope (Also referred to as the Tip):

Oh it felt so good to beat our rival 49ers like this in front of a home crowd. It was probably one of, if not the, loudest games in Seattle sports history. It was such a well-fought game between two of the biggest powerhouses in the league, back and forth all game and the nail-biting last drive by the 49ers was so tense. I was watching the game at a bar in Bellingham and you could have heard a pin drop during the final minutes until Sherman tipped it to Smith to send us to the Super Bowl. The whole place erupted; people were jumping on tables and spilling their drinks all over. Such an epic climax to an amazing game. Watch the last drive by the 49ers (final 5 minutes):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXhHim68J-E&t=36s

2004: The Storm bring home Seattle’s first Championship trophy in 26 years:

The first one is always the sweetest. Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson, Betty Lennox; all legends. The Storm defeating the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA Finals was monumental and would lead to Seattle’s first pseudo sports dynasty. Unfortunately, all I could find was this super grainy video of the postgame celebration after they clinched the title (watch):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vqwLxAWkA4&t=67s

2016: Sounders FC beat Toronto 5-4 in PKs to win their first MLS Cup:

Specifically Stefan Frei’s save on the second PK by Toronto stands out to me as the defining moment. Granted it wasn’t the best try taken by Bradley but it still takes incredible reflexes to guess right and make the save. The boys buttoned it up by making all 5 of theirs, which is also quite a feat considering the pressure. It was a huge moment for the Sounders who would go on to repeat the following year. Watch the tense shootout:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duhzQjhY1GY

1996: Payton and Kemp outlast Malone, Stockton, Jazz in Game 7 to advance to the NBA Finals:

We were such a good team that year. Payton and Kemp seemed unbeatable to me when I was a little kid, they just played such complementary ball. The last free throws by Hersey to nail the coffin shut on the series were beautiful. After that game my young naivety really assumed we were the team that could finally dethrone Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the Finals. Oh how wrong I was lol. The last five minutes of the Conference Finals were epic though. Watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65Bd8vQY7Vc

2010: The Beast Quake:

Hands down this is my favorite one. Marshawn icing the game while being underdogs against the defending Super Bowl Champions at home in this fashion was just dope. I get emotional just listening to the play call from the commentary, I can recite it by heart I've watched it so many times. Steve Raible’s call has even more excitement but I didn’t hear until well after the game. The Beast Quake really felt like the moment the Seahawks franchise turned the corner and became serious contenders. Watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSBJxtEed1s

2022: Cal Raleigh Walk-off HR in the bottom of the 9th to end the Drought:

Talk about chills, Cal Raleigh just has ice in his veins. This is one of my favorite at-bats ever. Ending the 21-year playoff drought in the biggest moment against a divisional rival in front of a home crowd is beyond epic. Big Dumper crushes the slider in the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs and cements his place in history. My favorite part is him mouthing “holy fuck” as he rounds the bases in front of a full stadium going wild. Watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTGoZLPstJw

1979: Sonics bring home first and only NBA Championship in a Finals rematch with the Bullets:

I wasn’t alive for this one but how exciting it must have been to hoist the city’s first championship win since the 1917 Stanley Cup (62 years!?) against a powerhouse Bullets team no less. I am quite sour that Oklahoma City now owns the banner, just plain wrong. Watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFCMXLtTu3Y

1991: Washington Huskies defeat Michigan in Rose Bowl, split NCAA Title with Miami:

Still our only College Football title (I really thought 2023 was our year, ugh) and often ranked as one of the best NCAA teams of all time. I was too young to appreciate it when it happened but this was a huge achievement to usher in the modern era of football for UW. Great for the school, and great for the city. Watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KleZ8Ujqn8

Honorable Mentions:

1917: Seattle Metropolitans win Stanley Cup, a first for an American team

2001: Mariners tie single season record with 116 wins

2012: King Felix’s Perfect Game against Tampa Bay

2014: First Play Safety on Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLVIII (43-8)

2015: Chris Matthews' onside kick recovery vs Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game, one of the greatest/most improbable comebacks in NFL History (I got to be at the game for this one, it was absolutely incredible to witness)

2022: Sounders become first MLS team to take home the CONCACAF Champions League Trophy, beating Pumas UNAM 3-0 at home to seal the aggregate

2022: Mariners comeback win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS after being down 8-1 in the 5th inning

2023: University of Oregon kicker misses the game-winning field goal at Husky Stadium, protecting our perfect season as fans storm the field (also got to attend this game, the vibes were insane, such a fun rivalry)

TL;DR: Seattle sports are amazing and I love this city’s history!

Please tell me about the ones I missed! I'd love to hear other great Seattle Sports stories.
