Obviously, rei having the year warranty is nice, I do think the Trek FX7.4 and Specialized Sirrus sound decent for a versatile commuter. I am 5'8/135lbs so all these should fit fine, some of the ones offering extra tires/tubes sound appealing, but I suppose if one of the options is far superior that likely outweighs the value of extra's.

Seattle-ish in the 'Tac' part of Sea-Tac, but it's close enough. I've spent most of my life in Seattle — with happy lil stops in Hawaii, Texas, and Arizona — but the Pacific Northwest is home. The weather, the sports, and being two hours from the ocean, the mountains, the desert, and an entirely different country make it a lot of fun.

Things I'd love to write/send/do with a penpal!

➛ I'll send notes here and there about daily life & thoughts that come into my head here and there and you do the same!

➛ a list of questions: "favorite this" "worst that" "last time you..." "best thing you..." that kind of thing!

➛ I enjoy sending cards "in character" from different time periods, movie/tv settings, etc. Ever wanted to receive a letter from Cousin Mary who retired to the seaside to take the airs? Or one from your friend who is stuck taking a ring to some place called Mordor with nine other people who're convinced it's evil but honestly, it looks totally gold-plated... you know, that kind of thing.

➛ a back-and-forth story! I'll start writing a story, just a paragraph or two, and send it on. you continue it on that same piece of paper and send it back, then I'll add more and send it back, and so forth... until we have a whole story written.

➛ send newspaper clippings back and forth (i'd use them for découpage) or other tiny knick-knacks (foreign coins, old photos, etc) that can go in an envelope and not cost a lot.

➛ and I'm open to other ideas!

While I am sad to see Belmont and Pimlico change so much, the history those places had was so special IMO, I personally think it will have a positive impact on the sport. I think one of the big attractions of horse racing for many is the opulent frivolity of it. It's famed as the sport of kings for a reason.

And while many who've followed or been involved in the sport for a while may have sentimental attachment to Belmont or Pimlico (those are the stands Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed and Alydar, etc. ran past) I do have to admit that after so many years neither looked very "kingly". I imagine for potential new fans watching they don't see the history, they just see a run down venue whose best years look to be behind it.

So idk, I think the remodels might actually result in some interest in the sport. With Belmont and the train station, hockey arena, retail village, and hotel I could genuinely see someone who wasn't a horseracing fan being there for other reasons, seeing the pretty new Belmont grandstand, and thinking "That building looks cool, and we're already here, let's go check it out", and then hopefully having a positive experience that turns them into fans.

And since Churchill, Pimlico, and Belmont are our most showcased venues (outside of Breeders' Cup) I think they have the most impact on attracting new fans (most have seen a triple crown race on TV before their first visit to a track).

So what are your guys thoughts? Do you think these remodels will have a positive impact? Very little/no impact? Unless they go really pear-shaped I can't imagine a negative impact (I mean just the long term reduced costs in maintenance due to the reduced scale of Belmont's grandstand should be a positive), but maybe you can?
