Saisie sur compte pour être certain d’être payé ?

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 07:25

Salut a tous !

Should people boycott UEFA EURO 2024 and/or the Olympics?

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 05:01

There was a campaign to boycott World Cup 2022 in Qatar due to human rights violations. Nonetheless didn't let to something substantial.

https://www.euronews.com/2022/11/10/fifa-and-qatar-rattled-as-european-world-cup-boycott-gathers-pace

Since the UEFA EURO is held in Germany and the Olypmics will take place in Paris, France and both countries are suppressing freedom of speech which is a violation of human rights. On some occasion even the police brutally attacking protesters. Moreover, their media kept repeating lies after lies to justify a genocide and the politicians gave political cover to facilitate whatever necessary to commit the atrocities within the past months.

Already hundreds of artists have called others to boycott German state-funden cultural institutions over its stance on the war and the suppressing of freedom of speech.

So do you think boycotting these major sport events would be beneficial, counterproductive, futile or instead should be used to protest more (if the war hasn't ended by then)? Or do you think the situation in Qatar was more deserving of a boycott than the current situation?

Dress Rehearsal Report: Dua Lipa - May 4th 2024

Sun, 05/05/2024 - 02:22

I was at the dress rehearsal for the Dua Lipa episode tonight (via standby) and can summarize what what was changed/cut to the best of my memory. If anyone else was at dress, feel free to correct or add anything I missed :)

Student Protests

  • Heidi had a bob wig at dress

  • If I remember correctly, Mikey and Heidi’s characters were more anti-protest at dress than at live.

  • Kenan got cheers at dress during his initial lines supporting the protests

  • During his line about his daughter getting her degree, Kenan had a line mentioning "someone's dean" giving it to her.

Monologue

  • I don't think her parents were shown at dress (although the lines referencing them were still there).

  • The question from Andrew Dismukes was originally from Michael Longfellow

Young Spicy

  • Young Spicy added additional context at the start that he needs a new tag cause there are a lot of beefs and diss tracks goin around right now in rap (indirectly referencing the Kendrick/Drake feud).

  • When saying to "make it quick", in addition to the meter running, Kenan said he left a sandwich in the car with the windows open.

  • At one point, Kenan asked everyone for quarters to pay for the parking meter.

  • Kenan's joke about Young Spicy's neighbors was gone. Instead the sketch ended with Kenan's car getting towed.

Anomalous Man

  • No changes I noticed.

Good Morning Greenville

  • No changes I noticed.

Challengers Baby

  • After Bowen and Marcello's back and forth "I'm 41 so it's not weird." "Yes it is!" There was an additional line from Bowen where he says it's weird "in a different way."

Penne alla Vodka

  • No changes I noticed.

Dua Lipa - Illusion

  • Introduced by Sarah Sherman instead of Troye Sivan.

Weekend Update: Colin Jost and Michael Che

  • Colin did not say "It's the first night of spring, so we'll start tonight with puppy murder."

  • Joke added for live: "President Trump seen here definitely not sleeping."

  • Joke added for live: Che's follow-up to the Columbia students joke where he says the school should "stop telling students the truth" like him with his girlfriends.

  • I believe Che's punchline about the Final Four was about a different sports event.

  • Joke added for live: Colin's 11-day cruise joke

  • Colin cut joke about a guy who killed some people and the punchline is that he ate them (cause he's fat)

  • Colin cut joke: [paraphrased] Hope Hicks testified at the Trump trial, where she proved that the courtroom sketch artist can draw people that look human (cut to side by side of Hicks and Trump's sketches)

  • Colin cut joke: [paraphrased] In the Trump trial, Hope Hicks testified that Trump trusts Melania's advice. Well we know at least one time that wasn't true (cut to picture of Trump and Stormy Daniels)

  • Che did the same ad-lib after a bomb about Drake dropping another diss track, but he also did another one on a later bomb at dress, saying "And Kendrick just released a reply!"

  • At one point after a joke bomb, Che said something that sounded to me like "Just put me on the cast, Lorne!"

Weekend Update: Kristi Noem's other dog

  • There was joke using "All Dogs Go to Heaven" where they added a couple words making it specific to Noem's dogs.

  • Marcello also held up a book he is going to release [can't remember the title]

Weekend Update: Jojo Siwa

  • I don't recall hearing the snippets of her song played at dress.

  • She originally ate the cigarette. (I think it didn't get a big enough reaction to warrant doing it again).

  • Gay pop joke - Instead of Colin saying “I think that’s just pop”, he said “there’s been loads of other gay pop artists: Elton John, Ricky Martin, Renee Rapp. Also make up my gym playlist.”

Weekend Update: Jerry Seinfeld

  • They punched up the Ryan Gosling part a bit for live. I don't remember it having as many jokes, and there was originally a line advising Gosling to stay at home with his wife and kids.

Fat Daddy

  • No changes that I noticed.

  • As they were setting this up, I could hear Punkie telling Kenan and a few crew members about something she had cooking in her dressing room.

Dua Lipa - Happy for You

  • Introduced by Marcello Hernandez instead of Jerry Seinfeld.

Tiny Statement Pin

  • This was slightly longer at dress. I remember there was a pin mentioning Trans rights on screen with the Ceasefire pin.

Jingle

  • The Dua's "5 daqs deep" was originally said by Bowen.

Cut for Time

\1. Hotel/Restaurant (live sketch)

  • Chloe Fineman is at the front desk of a fancy hotel/restaurant. On the phone she says they are fully booked, but they can make room for Leonardo DiCaprio and his five guests. Mikey Day and Heidi Gardner (Mikey looks dressed like a 00s rock band frontman and Heidi looks a little Paris Hilton-esque) come in and ask for a room/table. Chloe denies them and they go into the “do you know who I am?” routine. Mikey (who has a ridiculous name I can’t remember) is from a “famous” band known for their song “Becky’s Mouth”, which Mikey sings for Chloe and it sounds like Jessie’s Girl, as Chloe points out. Heidi (also with a ridiculous name) is a model/actress and she mentions a commercial she was in. Dua Lipa enters as the third in their group. She cites her own list of silly sounding credits. Kenan comes out as the manager and gets mad at the group. Mikey tries to prove his importance by pointing out his car (not shown) from [fake car brand with silly name] which he got before it even released to the public. Kenan calls it ugly. Mikey also cites his expensive [fake clothing brand with silly name] clothing and Heidi her fancy bag with an LLF on it (standing for something starting with Luigi). Heidi pulls out a bottle of their brand of Ferret Vodka, which has a Ferret-haped stopper. Then, Colin Jost comes out in full vacation get-up, who the staff recognize as Colin Jost, and says he knows the trio and they can come sit at his table. He says he was just listening to “Becky’s Mouth”. End of sketch.

  • I thought this was pretty good. Sad to see a rare Colin Jost sketch appearance cut.

\2. What Would You Do? (live sketch)

  • There is a standard “What would you do?” intro where the premise is explained. In this episode, two actors will simulate a racist encounter in a pizza place to see how the patrons will react. Andrew Dismukes is the actor playing the guy behind the counter, and Marcello Hernandez is the actor playing a Latino guy with an accent buying a pizza. Marcello tries to order a pizza and Andrew suggests he illegally immigrated. As Molly Kearney, playing a nearby patron, is about to react, Dua Lipa and Ego Nwodim barge in. The narrator explains that these two women came in and interrupted the shoot so they couldn’t get the patrons’ reaction. They are both in fancy tracksuits (different colors) with a lot of makeup on and Dua has big hoop earrings. Both in trashy English accents, they start accosting Andrew. They say they’ve both been experiencing terrible diarrhea and it’s because of the pizza. They say they’ve only been in the US for a day and have just had the pizza, a pretzel, and some oysters a guy on the street offered them. They describe in excruciating detail how bad their diarrhea was and how it hit them as they were getting on the subway with a joke to the effect of “Stand clear of the expelling women”. Andrew tries a few times to unsuccessfully explain to them that he is just an actor and that they are shooting. Dua and Ego say that they themselves were “shooting” (referring to the diarrhea). They eventually get it when he says they are on TV. They get all excited, but say they wish they were prepared and Dua laments that she has her small hoops on. And I believe it ends with them realizing that they’re “dia-ruh-rhea” story got recorded and the narrator says that they kept it as revenge for ruining their shoot.

  • This was one of Dua’s best comedic roles all night so it was a shame it was cut. I guess the toilet humor could be a lot for some people, but it worked for me (and I thought the audience liked it).

  • Marcello was also wearing a mustache that IMO was really working for him.

\3. Graduation (live sketch)

  • Bowen Yang, Chloe Troast, Marcello Hernandez, Ego Nwodim, Dua Lipa [Corrected by u/wincew, Dua was not in this], and one or two others are on a college campus. They talk about their upcoming graduation and Chloe Troast with a guitar starts to lead them in a song to the tune of Graduation by Vitamin C. They recap their college experience year by year for a chorus/verse, with every year getting ruined by some world event. For each year, Kenan comes out with the respective NYE glasses for that year and for each bad news topic, they cut to JAJ as an anchor reporting that event. In 2020 they had Covid. Then they had the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Kenan says “How did you forget about January 6th?” The students all say at least they had some good things like corn kid, and the Ice Bucket Challenge (“that was 10 years ago!”). Then they show Ego and Marcello in bed together (still standing with a sheet placed in front of them and a bed stood up behind them), which cuts to Roe v. Wade being overturned. Then graduation comes in 2024, but they find out the ceremony is canceled because [they say something to indicate the Gaza protests, without mentioning them explicitly] reasons.

  • Maybe not the most original observation, but I liked it and liked what it was saying. Not really surprised it got cut though.

\4. Drinks after Work Promotion (live sketch)

  • Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim, Andrew Dismukes, Dua Lipa, and Molly Kearney (?) are out for drinks at a bar after work. They are talking about a promotion Andrew just got (due to nepotism) and how he is now their boss. Andrew makes a comment about removing a framed photo of Dua and her son. She gets offended since it’s actually a picture of her and her husband. Andrew points out she looks much older than him. Something causes the whole group minus Andrew to sing the song “Don’t Matter” by Akon. Andrew says he loves that song and it’s actually it’s his favorite song. Dua doubts him and asks what his favorite part is. He sings the chorus “Nobody wanna see us together”. Dua points out that his favorite part is just the chorus, to which he responds “that’s why it’s the chorus”. Dua insists he doesn’t actually know the song and challenges him to sing along if she plays it on the jukebox. As the song starts, Andrew sings the chorus, and then when the verse starts, he says his throat is dry and starts sipping his beer. Dua calls him out, but the rest of the group tells her to calm down. He finishes his beer just as the chorus comes back in and sings the chorus. When the next verse comes, he repeats the dry throat thing and grabs Ego’s wine and does the same thing. Dua gets more mad as the group polices her. The next verse Andrew fakes having to sneeze. Then he fakes getting a phone call about his mom being in the hospital “oh she’s okay?” and immediately breaks back into the chorus. He fakes the phone call again, but Dua grabs his phone and throws it. After the group gets upset with her again, she admits she was really just mad about the promotion, cause she really thought she was gonna get it, and is just taking it out on Andrew. Bowen then reminds her that she didn’t get the promotion because she twisted the nipples of the water cooler guy and the only reason she didn’t get fired is because he spilled it on her and she threatened to sue. The sketch ends with Dua and Andrew singing the “best part” together, with Andrew taking a high harmony.

  • I liked it, mainly for Andrew’s killer timing with each of his verse-chorus gags, but I’m not surprised it got cut.

  • As they were setting up this sketch, I waved at Dua and she made eye contact and waved back at me and so I was slightly distracted and starstruck at the beginning of this one.

\5. Babysitter (live sketch)

  • Sophie (Dua Lipa) is trying out for a babysitter gig for parents Mikey Day and Heidi Gardner. She seems to be getting along with the kids (extras) and Mikey and Heidi say how they don’t even want to see the other candidates cause they like Dua. Dua says how she appreciates that they don’t judge her for her past. They didn’t realize she had a past, which leads to her revealing she was in jail for DUIs. But she reassures them she doesn’t drink any more except [punchline I don’t remember]. She also mentions how she can’t read, and how in jail she fell in love with a guy, Winslow. She holds up a crayon drawing the kids made for her, with her as a stick figure behind bars, and written “visiting Sophie at [funny alternate name for jail]”. Mikey reads it aloud and Dua goes “so that’s what it says!” Dua asks if it’s alright that she invited her boyfriend over. There is a knock at the door and it is Kenan as Winslow. He has a long straight black wig and a long straight brown goatee and he is (as described by Mikey) “dressed like Carmen Sandiego”. Dua mentions something implying he runs a cult. Behind him are Chloe Troast and either Sarah Sherman or Chloe Fineman, who are dressed a little like what I imagine a Victorian schoolgirl would look like. Kenan introduces them both as Sophie. Mikey and Heidi ask “did he make you all change your name to Sophie?” to which all the girls confirm. Kenan then asks Heidi if she is “bleeding” because he needs it for a ritual. She is scandalized. The kids come back after interacting with Kenan and they both have red cloaks now, to Heidi and Mikey’s horror. That might have been the end of the sketch, but I can’t remember.

  • I think the weakest sketch of the night so this was a fair cut.

I thought overall it was a good episode, but I personally would have cut the Young Spicy sketch and replaced it with the What Would You Do? sketch.

A Whole Bean Tempest

Sat, 05/04/2024 - 12:51

"Miranda, dark roast, drip. Got it. What's your name?"

"Mark."

Mark Paris watched the barista write "Bart" on the plastic cup, and then place it on the counter. Slightly annoyed, Mark looked around Elsinore Station coffee shop. But for the view outside, it wouldn't be hard to mistake the place for a small Starbucks back on old Terra Firma. Espresso machines spitting out steam like suddenly disturbed pit bulls. A small, homemade batch of probably tasty pastries under a glass surface. A few metal tables sporting metal chairs with blue plastic rectangles for backs, three of which were occupied by what looked like super tall college students staring hard into their laptops, fat headphones covering most of their heads.

But then there was the view. Instead of an urban intersection with cars waiting for their light to turn; Uranus. Big, pale green Uranus. Mark remembered the feelings he'd had when he was a kid back in Philadelphia, looking up at those tall buildings. Or looking down from mile-high ComcastMeta One, the head spinning, eyes watering vertigo. That experience does not prepare you for being face to face with a planet, floating in the deep black of space.

Uranus. The butt of all juvenile jokes. It was too big to all fit in one viewport. When Mark walked right up to the viewport and smashed his face against it, he could still only barely make out the right limb of the planet. As he watched, that limb slowly migrated up the rim of the viewport, and for a moment Mark could almost feel himself rotating downward while the planet stayed still. But only for a moment.

The SNEEZE, SPIT, HISS of an espresso machine brought his attention back to what tall Uranus girl was doing. She had already placed the paper filter into the steel funnel and filled it with those sweet, semi-coarse grounds, and was just starting to pour the scalding water. Mark watched the thin stream of dark joy snake from the bottom of the cone down into his cup.

For a few moments, Mark could almost convince himself that the drip of coffee followed a straight line, instead of the slightly antispinward, curved arc that all falling objects followed on a rotating space station. And those few moments brought his imagination back to when he first tried the coffee from Miranda.

"Mark, are you getting all this?"

Mark wrenched his eyes away from the pale green plastic canister that had arrested his attention, and looked at a display of various video feeds and metrics. Mark certainly had not been getting this. "Uh, sorry, what?"

"Mark!" yelled Windy Rogers-Chan, one of the two-man fix team out repairing Guard-4, a communications relay satellite at the Uranus-Sun Lagrange 4 point, near Uranus's Trojan asteroids. Though system communication could still go via the L5 station, AT&T liked to have full redundancy. If Guard-5 was also lost, it would badly hinder communications among the outer planets.

The other mechanic, Alejandro Cota, was waiting patiently, looking at Windy's headcam, with his gloved paw resting on the open door of an access panel. Inside were a couple cards that were designed to be replaceable in case of a failure or upgrade. One of the cards was clearly missing.

"I know it's hard work sitting on your ass up there, Mark, but I need you to acknowledge that the C-card is missing, and that it was missing when Alex opened the panel," said Windy.

"Oh, yeah," stammered Mark, "clearly C-card is gone, and was missing before Alex opened the panel."

"Thanks Mark," replied Windy, "Back to work, pal."

Mark considered the issue. First, the damage was easily repairable, since their ship carried a stock of all the regular cards. Second, more importantly, this is now the third L4 job where they'd run into a missing C-card. These things don't fall out on their own. Maybe the manufacturer forgot to install it, or a previous fix team forgot to replace it. But then the laser would fail to stay aligned from the get go. A more likely cause was that someone removed it on purpose.

But wasn't it hard to think clearly about a Solar System-wide ring of satellite saboteurs when you haven't had your coffee yet?

Mark hadn't had coffee in three Earth days.

The coffee maker was broken, and needed new parts to function.

Mark's team could fix any problem on a laser communication satellite, but couldn't fix the coffee maker. Mark absolutely thirsted for coffee. Especially for some dark roasted Miranda, which he had never tasted before, yet sat perfectly ground in that pale green canister he was holding with both hands.

Miranda coffee beans. A long growth, low field variety.

On Earth, coffee is grown high in the mountains. The higher up you can grow it, but still remain below freezing, the denser the bean. Denser beans, like those from Ethiopia or Columbia, are the sweetest and most acidic. And also the most coveted.

Growers had tried reproducing those conditions in controlled environments on Earth, but with mixed results. There was something about being high up that produced fantastic beans, which included sharp swings in temperature, low pest pressures, intense light, and lower oxygen content, but also something else. A je ne sais qua that advantaged those Colombian and Ethiopian farmers.

It may have been that those beans just wanted to get outside the Earth's protective geomagnetic field. Because, oh, did the flavor profiles expand once we started growing coffee in space. The first off-planet cultivars were grown on the Moon by American colonists. The taste may not have been as delicious as the best Ethiopian brew, but the profile was so significantly different that Lunar Beans became a bit of a delicacy sought after by terrestrial connoisseurs.

Today, we know that coffee beans respond differently to all growing locations in the Solar System. Botanists still don't understand the exact configuration of conditions that produce these novel flavor profiles, but it seems that, as long as the farmer is skilled at growing the bean, the taste is governed by the geometric position of the growing bean relative to the Sun and other celestial bodies.

The job would take another hour or two to complete, as Mark imagined what those beans would become once brewed.

As Mark tasted the anticipated sweetness of the coffee, he fantasized about various brew methods. On Earth, he could just grab a French press and brew the perfect carafe. He could almost see the 175 F water being poured into the dry grounds, watching them swirl and dance as the carafe filled. Or maybe a cone filter, watching the dark soil rise to the top, while the pot below filled with the black ichor, a pungent odor wafting into his nostrils. Hell, Mark would use a regular drip coffee maker, or even - Heaven forbid! - a percolator at this point. Anything!

Mark heard Windy rattling off some description, but he wasn't listening. He was staring at that pale green canister. Imagining which fruits he would taste after getting hit with that first acidic sweetness.

Enough! The only thing Mark was missing here was gravity. There was an old cone drip funnel down in the mess hall, which they used while the ship was accelerating between planets. Instead of dripping into a mug, Mark could use one of the old NASA space cups. Colloquially dubbed the "pussy cup" by some guys in the laser communication mechanics union, it had been designed over a hundred years ago to hold coffee while in freefall, using the liquid's adhesive properties. But, it did look like a cross between a squid's backside, a vagina, and a rustic teapot.

Mark snapped the magnetic bottom of the can to the stainless steel console and leaped towards the hatch. He passed through three more portals before arriving at the mess hall. It was quite sparse on the surface, and looked like any other floor. But the cabinets held all kinds of food stuffs, packaged in varieties of plastic bags, tubes, and cans. Enough to sustain a crew of three for many months in space. It also housed supplies, like the steel coffee funnel, micropore cone filters, measuring cups, liquid syringes, and, of course, some pussy cups.

He strung the setup to a big mommy hook, clipped it to a strap on his pants, and hurried back up to the command deck. Once there, he carefully arranged everything, sitting normal to the forward panel. Cup, coffee funnel, cone filter. Then he placed the measuring cup, water tube, and coffee can lovingly next to the apparatus. Finally, he programmed the ship's computer to run a series of maneuvers that would last ten minutes, before returning exactly to the current position.

Mark got into position, finger hovering over the GO button. Suddenly remembering his crew out in the harsh black of space, he checked their stats and their image in the cameras. All good.

"Uh, guys, don't be alarmed. I'm going run a test on Banshee's side thrusters. Should only take about ten minutes."

In the video feed, Mark saw Windy freeze. "Mark?" She was staring into the camera now, eyes digging deep into Mark's conscience. "What are you doing?"

"It's OK, won't take long. Don't worry."

Mark's finger hit GO.

At first, it was hard to tell anything was happening. But then Mark started to feel pressure on his body, as he got pressed gently against the front panel.

The ship had started to tumble, end over end, slowly gaining rotational speed. When Mark felt enough pressure, he started to smile, and popped open the coffee can.

The most wonderful symphony of smells burst into the atmosphere. Cherry, lime, lilac, oak. Mark almost cried as he carefully spooned grounds into the cone filter. When the ship got up to speed, he began to pump steaming water over the coffee.

Then, Mark started feeling dizzy. "Mark, what the fuck are you doing?" he heard Windy ask. The first drips came down from the funnel. They didn't come down straight, but in a clear arc, splashing onto the panel next to the flesh colored cup. Getting dizzier, Mark pushed the cup under the stream, and continued to fill the funnel with water.

The dizziness grew quickly, and then gave way to nausea. Mark sat next to the makeshift coffee setup and tried to be still while adding hot water to the cone. The ship was at full spin now. Mark could hear his crew yelling angry words through the intercom, but he was concentrating so hard on watching the coffee drip down and on holding back puke that he could no longer parse the meaning of the words.

The stream of coffee bent very strongly in the antispinward direction. Mark thought back to the warnings that all rotating space stations had, on the way from hub to rim, that warned newcomers to move slowly at first or risk sickness. Mark always thought it was because of the disorientation, animal confusion, brought on by the eyes perceiving the odd motion of objects outside the station. But now, watching the arc of brewed coffee, he though of the juices sloshing around in his own head, trying their best to follow their freefall geodesic paths as Mark moved up and down, turned his head, moved his arms around. And that only made the nausea worse.

Finally, the coffee neared the top of the pussy cup, so Mark stopped adding water. He could feel the ship begin to slow its spin, and prepared to be weightless again. The strong aroma of nutty dark fruits still filled the cabin's atmosphere, and Mark's nostrils, but the sensation was no longer pleasant. As the ship slowed to a halt, coming again to its former rest position, Mark reached for the cup. He could now make out what Windy and Alex were yelling - various descriptions of what violent things they would do to him when they got back in the ship. Mark ignored these mundane unpleasantries as much as his pounding ears would allow, and brought the object of his toil to his lips. And then he barfed.

"Bart!" The barista's voice jolted Mark out of his imagination, out of the past. As he grabbed the white cup, he mumbled, "The name's MARK."

"Oh, sorry," said the smiling gawky girl, "Hey, be careful, it's really hot."

"Sure, thanks," Mark said with a smile, as he turned back to the table he had claimed, near that expansive porthole. He sat down and popped the plastic lid off the cup, and watched the pent up steam waft upwards toward the ceiling, vaguely intending to arc antispinward. Then he turned his attention back to the coffee.

Oh, Miranda,

So perfect and so peerless, are created Of every creature's best!

Mark lifted the cup to his nose, took a deep breath, and let the intoxicating odor fill his soul. Then he took a sip.

"Ow! Goddamn!" That coffee sure was hot! Mark put the cup on the table and looked back out the window at Uranus. Once you burn your tongue, that's it. You can't unburn it.

Small Arms of the Bear and Lone Star

Sat, 05/04/2024 - 12:28

This isn't any grandiose scenario about alternate wars or nations. Just my best attempt at a Forgotten Weapons style history of two fictional nation's small arms from the 1830s to the modern day.

Disclaimer: I would have added multiple flairs considering this post covers the mid 1800s to the present, but since I could only add one I went with Post 1900s. I do hope that is the correct one for this post.

Introduction

The California Republic and Republic of Texas are two nations linked in shared history and struggle. Both were founded by alliances of American immigrants and local Californio and Tejano dissidents that joined together and fought for their freedom against the unstable and often dictatorial Mexican central government of the 1830s and 1840s. In their fights for independence, the Bear and Lone Star Republics adopted many different weapons over the years. In this we will chronicle the different small arms used from the earliest days of each nation’s military to the modern day.

Part 1: Independence to the Great War

Arms of Independence: 1835-1848

We begin with each nation's fight for independence. As we will come to see, through the 19th century, both California and Texas would mirror each other with weapons adoption. Additionally, internal weapons development would be rare throughout this time period as well. For the most part, both nations would use a collection of whatever they could get their hands on in terms of infantry small arms.

There were three principle firearms employed by the Bear Flag and Lone Star Rebels; the American Model of 1816 Springfield Musket, the Spanish M1752 Musket, and the India Pattern Brown Bess. These also included examples of all the variants of said firearms. The M1816 and M1752 were by far the most common as many of the fighting men owned their own weapons, however the India Pattern Brown Bess was heavily used by regular Mexican forces during the Texas and California Revolutions, so it’s unsurprising that captured examples made their way into the ranks of the rebels.

It should also be said that during both wars, the United States did happily supply the Rebels with arms, powder, and munitions. This would make the Model 1816 the most common arm used by either nation by the late 1840s. It’s ironic really, as in 1848 the Californians would turn the arms supplied to them against their former American benefactors when the U.S. attempted to annex the fledgling state in 1848.

Standardization and Modernization: 1848-1867

Following the Californians stunning victory over the American Army at the Battle of Lake Tahoe, the sister Republics of Texas and California would solidify their independence as the latter was quickly recognized by the Great Powers of Europe, and the former would see the defeat and collapse of the pro-annexation political parties in government. It’s during this time that both nations looked to standardize and modernize their weapons.

Texas had begun this process during the late 1830s and early 1840s, however they were unable to truly begin standardizing on a weapon until just before the outbreak of the Californian Revolution in 1845. Texas’ first true standard weapon would be a variation of the aforementioned Model of 1816 Springfield, namely the caplock Model of 1842 Springfield Musket. While still a smoothbore design, this weapon would bring the Texan Military up to date with their contemporaries. It would take Texas several years, but by 1849 their entire military would be equipped with the new weapon.

California began its modernization campaign during the tenure of its second President, Joshua Stevens and continued under the third, Mauricio Valdez, a span of time between 1850 and 1872. Both were military men, Stevens having served in both the Texan and Californian Revolutions, while Valdez had been an officer in the Alta California Militia before leading a mutiny and joining the rebels. They both recognized the need for a standard arm if the young republic was to defend itself. Like Texas they had taken several years and trial several different weapons, including the 1853 Enfield and 1854 Lorenz, but ultimately they would choose the Model of 1855 Springfield due mostly in part to the ease of procurement given their proximity to the U.S. One major request they made however was the removal of the tape primer system the Springfield Armory had been experimenting with, and the installation of a traditional caplock mechanism. Texas would soon follow suit and adopt the new Model of 1855. The weapon for its faults had a distinct advantage over their 1842s, it was a rifle musket and thus offered greater range and accuracy than the smoothbore 1842.

The Model of 1855 would never fully outfit either the Texan or Californian militaries, but it would contribute a significant minority of small arms equipped to infantry. The Model of 1855 would be quickly superseded by the Model of 1861 Springfield, which would come to be the standard arm of both nation’s military. There was a complication however, considering the U.S. was in the midst of the Civil War and couldn’t spare rifles to sell to foreign nations. To remedy this issue, both nations would purchase the license and tooling to build the rifles themselves. This would be the first time either nation would produce their own rifles themselves.

The 1842, 1855, and 1861 would serve Californian and Texan troops well during the War of the American Alliance, which lasted from 1863-1867, and saw California and Texas intervene in the Franco-Mexican War to assist Mexico from being subjugated by France and Austria. Also, while officially neutral, many independent Californian and Texan volunteers would take these rifles with them to fight in the American Civil War on the side of the Union and Confederacy respectively.

During this time of standardization there was an attempt by both nations to standardize the arms of their officer corps. During the era of the Revolutions from 1835 to 1848, officers used what they could get their hands on much like the rank and file infantryman, everything from full length rifles to flintlock pistols, and early revolvers. Two revolvers would be unofficially adopted by both nations during this time period, both Colt designs, the 1851 Colt Navy and later the 1860 Colt Army. I say “unofficially” because these were popular firearms purchased by the officers themselves and were never truly standard issue. It wouldn’t be until the early 1870s when a standard side arm was adopted by either California or Texas.

Breech Loader Revolution: 1867-1894

Following the end of the American Civil War and War of the American Alliance in 1865 and 1867 respectively, the Californians and Texans began to look at further modernization of their small arm, and for the first time this would also include their cavalry forces. Up until now California and Texas have outfitted their Cavalry forces very differently from each other, with the former employing large numbers of Lancers and Hussars, and the latter simply equipping their cavalry with the infantry musket. Both would experience issues with their respective doctrines during the War of the American Alliance as massed Cavalry charges were slowly becoming obsolete and long infantry rifles were not very practical for use on horseback.

California had employed Lancers and Hussars in their military over Dragoons due mainly in part to the success they had with both types of troop during their war of independence. Many Californios formed a corps of Lancers whose charge was deadly and used to great effect by Mauricio Valdez in his campaign down the central valley and pacific coast. On a similar note, Joshua Stevens led a guerrilla band of light cavalry on lightning raids throughout Eastern Alta California and Nuevo Mexico. After the war, these militia formations would be reorganized into regulars, the Crimson Lancers and Emerald Hussars.

Texas on the other hand operated an irregular band of horsemen, mostly a mixed formation of what could be considered hussars and mounted rifles, known as the Texas Legion. The Cavalry in Texas didn’t have as formidable a reputation as the Californian Cavalry, but still proved to be an effective fighting force during the revolutions of the 1830s and 1840s.

The Californians and Texans had been paying attention to military developments in both the American Civil War and in the wars of Europe. What they had seen was the widespread adoption of breech loading and repeating firearms. Each of their infantry forces would adopt breechloading conversions of the 1861 Springfield, The Model of 1866. These weapons however would see short service lives, and like the Model of 1855, would never come to fully equip either nation’s military. Instead, the weapon that became the iconic arm of the mid to late 19th century for the Bear and Lone Star would be the Model of 1873 Trapdoor Springfield, as well as the later iteration, the Model of 1881. Both would be adopted in the American .45-70 Cartridge.

When it came to their cavalry however, this is where both nations took a differing approach to arms procurement. Many Texan volunteers in the Confederate Army had been cavalrymen, famed for their lightning raids under the command of men like J.E.B Stuart and Nathan Bedford Forrest, and they had been quick to adopt short breech loading carbines, namely the Sharps Carbine, when they could get their hands on them. When these men returned to Texas after the war, quite a few had brought their new preferred weapon with them which prompted the Texan military to look into the firearm. After extensive testing and research of battlefield reports through the late 1860s, the Texan military would formally adopt the Sharps Carbine as their main cavalry arm in 1871. This coincided with the Texas Legion being reorganized into a force of regular Light Cavalry Dragoons and being renamed the Texas Rangers.

Californian Volunteers in the Union Army made up a single infantry brigade as well as a cavalry regiment. These were the “California Brigade,” made up of the 69th, 71st, 72nd, and 106th Pennsylvania, and the 2nd Massachusetts “California Hundred” Cavalry. These men had very different experiences in the war, with the Infantry becoming famed for their tenacity and discipline, while the cavalry would be notable for having a pair of Medal of Honor recipients during the war. In any case, to make a long story short, the men of the 2nd Mass had come to use both the sharps and spencer carbines during their service, and while both were well liked, the spencer was far more popular. Like the Taxan military, the Californian military would test both weapons, with President Valdez taking a personal liking to the Spencer. By 1869, California had chosen the Spencer as its standard cavalry arm and would purchase several thousand from the U.S. and begin licensed production as well. Like Texas, California would reorganize their Lancer and Hussar cavalry units into Dragoons, the renamed Crimson Dragoons operating as “Heavy” Cavalry and the Emerald Dragoons as “Light” Cavalry.

Both weapons would have a relatively short service life however as newer weapons developed in the 1870s would quickly surpass them. In 1876 Texas would adopt a carbine variant of their 1873 Rifles while California would adopt the 1876 Winchester Repeater in 1877, followed by the Models of 1886 and 1892 later on.

A weapon with a significantly longer service life would be the sidearm adopted during this time period by both nations. Both California and Texas held extensive trials during the early 1870s to finally standardize the sidearms of their officers and replace the collection of 1851 and 1860 Colt revolvers they operated. By 1875 this had resulted in both nations adopting the iconic Colt Single Action Army for their officer corps for both the infantry and cavalry. The Single Action Army would go on to have a long career in both nation’s militaries, serving a frontline role until 1895 and a reserve role until 1918.

The weapons adopted during this post war era would see little service beyond peacekeeping and garrison duty as between 1867 and 1912, no wars were fought involving either California or Texas.

Part 2: Weapons of the World Wars: 1894-1956

Rifles, Short Rifles, and Carbines

The late 1880s and early 1890s were a whirlwind for weapons development on the world stage. The invention of smokeless powder and the subsequent adoption of the 1886 Lebel by the French produced a dreadnought effect that would make all existing single shot and black powder firearms obsolete overnight. To their credit the Californian and Texan militaries would begin to shop around and trial many different firearms, but it would take many years before they would adopt new arms to outfit their soldiers. This would occur in 1894 in Texas and 1896 in California.

One thing both Texas and California would do would be to outfit their militaries with a single standard rifle, the infantry, cavalry, and navy (including marines) would all have a single rifle made in different patterns based on need. In Texas this took the form of the Model of 1894 “Lone Star” Rifle, a Texan contract Krag Jorgensen Rifle. All rifles would fire the same cartridge, the proprietary .30-30 Krag (aka .30 Texan), but all would be made in differing lengths. The 1894 “Army” had a 30 inch barrel, the “Navy” had a 27 inch barrel, and the Cavalry Carbine would have a 20 inch barrel.

California would adopt a variation of the American Model of 1895 Lee Navy in 1896. A small group of Californian military attaches had been present during the U.S. Navy trials of 1894-95 and quite liked the rifle. Following its adoption by the U.S they would approach James Paris Lee about purchasing a license to produce the firearm. After a short testing period they would adopt the weapon in three variations as the M96 Rifle in 6x60 Lee (aka. 6mm Lee Navy) . The M96 “Navy” would be unchanged from its American counterpart with a 28 inch barrel, while the “Army” would have a longer 32 inch barrel. The Cavalry Carbine would sport a 20 inch barrel.

Both the Texan Krag and Californian Lee would come to fully replace all their black powder firearms by the mid 1900s and would undergo some incremental changes. In the case of the Texan Krag, this took the form of the weapon being rechambered in the American .30-06 cartridge in 1907. This was done for two reasons; Reason number one being that .30 Texan had proven to be an underpowered cartridge for what the Texan Army wanted in their service rifle. During early tests and field trials all seemed fine, but with the rapid pace of firearms development, it had been outpaced by its contemporaries. Reason number two was that .30 Texan was not a spitzer bullet, it was a round-nosed type. With the aforementioned reason of it being underpowered, the Texan military opted to not update .30 Texan and just replace it all together. The newly minted Model 94/07 Rifles and Carbines would go on to serve the Texan Army well during their Joint Intervention in the Mexican Revolution with California as well as in the trenches of WW1 during their involvement from 1916-1918.

The M96 Lee would not be updated until after the aforementioned intervention in the Mexican Revolution and California’s annexation of the Baja California Peninsula. Like the Texan rifle, the Californians would update their ammunition, however instead of rechambering their rifles, they would update their ammunition to spitzer bullets, retroactively naming the early type “M1 Ball” and designating the new 6x60 spitzer ammunition as “M2 Ball.” Additionally, the Californian troops had issues with losing their extractors when field stripping and cleaning their firearms, so this update also saw the free floating extractor of the M96 seated in a track on the bolt, still allowing it to move, but without it falling out of the gun when removing the bolt. These new updates were developed in 1914 and formally adopted in 1915, giving the rifle with these updates the designation of M96/15.

Texas would have one final iteration of their “Lone Star” Krags developed in the mid 1920s and formally adopted in 1927. This iteration would be the “Lone Star” Short Rifle. The Texans had come to learn that having three different versions of your main weapon wasn’t necessary anymore. World War 1 had proven cavalry to be mostly obsolete beyond reconnaissance and garrison duties, so a short Carbine wasn’t entirely necessary for them. Similarly, the long 30+ inch barrels many infantry rifles of the day had along with the sword style bayonets proven to be overly long for modern warfare. The new Model of 1927 Short Rifle would feature a universal barrel length of 26 inches for all three major service branches. In addition to this, a semi-pistol grip would be added for ease of use by the shooter. This firearm would have a short frontline service of only 11 years before its replacement by the American M1 Garand. It would serve in a reserve and auxiliary role until 1943 when it would be formally replaced in this role by the M1 Carbine. Both these iconic American repeating firearms would serve with Texan forces through the 1940s and 50s, and into the early 60s in a reserve role.

California would also develop a new version of their M96 Rifle. Development and testing took place in the mid to late 20s, of both a new rifle and new ammunition. California had seen many contemporary militaries switch to 7mm or .30 caliber ammunition over the last 30 years and 6x60 Lee was beginning to show its age as a military cartridge. They looked at many different rounds such as .303 British, 7.5 French, and 8mm Mauser, but also considered just chambering the new round in .30-06. However, after several rounds of testing and development, California created a proprietary cartridge, 7.5x55 M1 Ball (aka 7mm Lee). The most major change to the M96 was the decision to go to a traditional straight pull rotating bolt action rather than keeping the existing upward camming tilting bolt action. This was done to allow the fitting of a rear aperture sight to the new rifle, which provided a better sight picture than the tangent sights of the M96 as well as to make the action more slick and faster to use as a whole. Lastly, a universal barrel length of 25 inches would be chosen. The new weapon was adopted in 1932 as the M32 Service Rifle. The weapon would receive an update in 1942 to make it simpler to produce and be dubbed the M32/42. Additionally, due to experiences in the thick jungles of the South Pacific a carbine version with a 20 inch barrel would be developed and adopted in 1944 as the M44 Carbine. The M32 would be formally retired in 1954 while the M44 would be rechambered into 7.62 NATO and be made standard issue as the M4 Service Rifle, it would serve until its replacement in 1956, and remain in reserve and auxiliary usage until 1965.

Squad Support Weapons

Neither California nor Texas had adopted a portable light machine gun in the years leading up to World War 1. They had however adopted heavier machine guns mounted on tripods such as the iconic water-cooled Maxim Gun and the much cheaper Colt-Browning M1895 “Potato Digger.” The search for a portable light machine gun would begin during the 1912-1913 Intervention in the Mexican Revolution by both nations. The fluid nature of maneuver warfare in that conflict meant that heavier mounted machine guns like the maxim and potato digger were of limited and varying effectiveness and it was found by the joint intervention force that units of infantry needed more portable heavy firepower. This would result in California and Texas holding joint military trials in 1915 of several different firearms, most notably the Madsen and Lewis Guns. These trials wouldn’t ultimately lead to the adoption of any one standard light machine gun as by 1916 they had found themselves embroiled in World War 1 and in serious need of firearms. Both the Californian and Texan militaries would operate a collection of these early light machine guns during the Great War, the Madsen was a favorite among troops, and the Lewis proved to be reliable, but the infamous Chauchat was more common and available in higher numbers.

Following their experiences in World War 1, both nations would continue their trials of various Light Machine Guns albeit separately. Texas would adopt two Browning designs in the early 1920s, the first being the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle and the other being the M1919 Browning Machine Gun. The latter of these two arms was meant to replace existing stockpiles of Maxims and Potato Diggers, while also serving a man portable sustained fire support weapon at the section level. The BAR on the other hand was meant to be issued out at the squad level as was the original intention of the trials back in 1915. The adoption of these weapons made sense for Texas considering they were proven reliable firearms already chambered in their standard .30-06 cartridge.

California on the other hand would initially standardize on the Lewis Gun rechambered in 6x60 during the post war years, dubbing it the M22 Light Machine Gun for its year of official adoption in 1922. However, with the adoption of a new cartridge and rifle in 1932, the Bear Republic sought to replace the Lewis Gun entirely rather than simply rechambering it for the 7.5x55 cartridge. During this time, the Lewis Gun would be put up against several other firearms including the aforementioned BAR and M1919, as well as the Madsen Gun, FM 24/29, and ZB 26. Ultimately the Czech ZB 26 would be officially adopted in 1934 to replace the Lewis Gun as the M34 Light Machine Gun and chambered in 7.5x55.

The M1919, BAR, and M34 would serve with Texas and California respectively through the Second World War and into the 1950s. All would prove to be reliable and well liked by the troops issued with them. In the case of the M34, it would go through an update in 1955 to rechamber it into 7.62 NATO, being redubbed the M5 Light Machine Gun and would serve in a reserve role until the 1980s.

Sidearms

California and Texas would both adopt a new revolver in the mid 1890s, this being the Colt M1892 to replace their existing Single Action Armies. While the iconic revolver would remain in reserve service through World War 1, the new M1892 would prove to become a favorite among officers and other troops issued with them. California and Texas would in fact hang on to their revolvers longer than the U.S. would. While both nations would experiment with more modern handguns, they didn’t have the same push to replace them as the U.S. had considering the Californians and Texans weren’t fighting fanatical guerrillas in the jungles of the Philippines. It wouldn’t be until the 1930s when either nation looked to replace their revolvers, and they would take two distinct routes.

Texas in the mid 1930s would continue their trend of adopting the American standard firearm with the official adoption of the Colt 1911 in .45 ACP. The trials for this weapon were fairly extensive as it was tested against several contemporary arms including the S&W M1917 Revolver, the Luger P08, and an early version of the FN Browning High Power. Ultimately however, the 1911 won out and would be the Texan military standard until they jumped on the 9x19 bandwagon in the early 2000s.

California would as part of their rearmament program in the early to mid 1930s adopt a new pistol, the FN Browning High Power. While the American 1911 was considered for adoption and tested during this time, Military officials saw the growing global standard was the 9x19 Parabellum cartridge and decided to adopt that as their national standard. Like the 1911 in Texan service, the Browning High Power would have a long service history, being in frontline service until the mid 1980s and continuing to today in a reserve role.

Part Three: The Cold War and Beyond

Cold War Modernization: 1956-1985

Following World War II and the creation of NATO, there was a push for Western Aligned nations to standardize on a rifle and cartridge for ease of logistics in the event of another major war. Texas and California would formally participate in NATO trials in the 1950s for said firearm and rifle, this was also despite the fact that the latter was not formally a part of NATO. Following the adoption of 7.62x51 as the standard NATO cartridge, California and Texas would look to convert their existing firearms to it as well as adopt new self-loading battle rifles to replace them in frontline service.

For California this would take the form of the semi-auto only Inch Pattern FN FAL, which would be adopted in 1956 as the M6 Service Rifle. The Californian Inch Pattern FALs are identified from Commonwealth FALs in that they lack the carry handle and for their distinctive Redwood furniture. The M6 would serve as the infantry standard until 1989, and continues in the role of a designated marksman’s rifle today.

Texas would adopt the Armalite AR-10 in 1957 as the select fire M10 Combat Rifle. The Texan M10 also featured wood furniture rather than plastic or bakelite and is distinctive for its khaki tan color. One other marking to tell Texan contract AR-10s from others is the presence of the Texan Lone Star stamped into the side of the receiver. The M10 would serve as the infantry standard until 1992. A DMR version dubbed the M10S would be adopted in 1987 and continues to serve in that role today.

In the realm of Light Machine Guns, both nations would adopt the FN MAG in 7.62 NATO in the early 1960s. Officially, the weapon was dubbed by California as the M3 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and in Texas simply as the FN GPMG. This weapon would formally replace each nation’s stockpile of squad support weapons and section machine guns, and continue in their roles to this day.

Modern Small Arms for a Modern World: 1985-present

Almost as soon as 7.62 NATO was adopted, there had been a trend towards the adoption of smaller intermediate rounds. The U.S. had adopted the AR-15 in 5.56x45 to replace their existing 7.62 M14 less than 10 years after their official adoption, and other nations in both the Western and Eastern Blocs were experimenting with similar cartridges. Texas would begin to phase out the M10 Combat Rifle when they adopted the American M16 in 1989 and the shorter M4 Carbine in 1995, both chambered in 5.56 NATO. California would do the same with their M6 Service Rifle earlier in 1982 with the adoption of the FN FNC as the M2 Service Rifle in 5.56 NATO.

While the FN MAG would continue in service for both nations, a lighter more easily portable Machine Gun was looked for by both nations. An early attempt to replace the FN MAG as the squad support weapon would be made in the 1970s with experimental heavy barrel M6s and M10s equipped with larger drum mags and bipods. These tests however would go nowhere as neither weapon was suited to the role. It wouldn’t be until the 1980s when both nations would trial and adopt the FN Minimi in the role of the Squad Support Weapon. Adopted in 1987 in California, they would dub the weapon the M7 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), while Texas would adopt the weapon in 1986 as the FN LMG.

California and Texas would also modernize their handguns during this time. While the Browning Hi Power and M1911 had served both nations well, they were well over fifty year old designs by this point. California would adopt a new pistol first, choosing the Glock 17 to replace the Browning Hi Power in 1984. Seeing as both pistols were chambered in 9x19 it was also seen by Californian officials as the right choice since they could use existing stockpiles of munitions. Glocks continue to serve in the Californian military today, with more compact Glock 19 coming to be the most common form in the military today. Texas would test a multitude of pistols over the 1990s, including the Glock, but would ultimately adopt the H&K USP in 9x19 in 2001. This handgun continues to serve Texan forces to this day as their standard side arm. In both the case of California and Texas however there are ongoing discussions to adopt the SIG M17 and M18 pistols to replace the Glock and USP, but very little has been done to test and trial the proposed weapons against the existing standard.

Storylines to look out for in Round 2

Sat, 05/04/2024 - 09:46

Jalen Brunson vs. Tyrese Haliburton

This year Haliburton was voted by fans as a starter in the NBA All-Star game ahead of Brunson. He was also invited to play for Team USA at the Olympic Games in Paris this summer while Brunson was not. Snubbing Brunson on both nominations is interesting considering Brunson will most likely be a top 5 MVP nominee and will certainly make an All-NBA team while Haliburton probably won't. These two players also have very different playing styles. Haliburton is a tall passing point guard who wants to play fast while Brunson is an undersized but crafty player who can devastate with isolation plays in the midrange. So who is better? Will this be the start of a budding rivalry between the next generation of dominant point guards? The media and fans should definitely focus on this matchup between these two rising stars.

Jalen Brunson vs. Rick Carlisle

Jalen Brunson spent his first three seasons in Dallas under then head coach Rick Carlisle. Brunson's production gradually improved each of those three seasons but things did not end well. Brunson only played 10 minutes in their game 7 round 1 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers and Carlisle was fired at season's end. Carlisle's departure had much more to do with his relationship with Luka Doncic and his failures in the playoffs but Carlisle's no-nonsense coaching style did not necessarily endear him to all of his players. Carlisle is now the head coach of the Indiana Pacers and Brunson will likely never admit it publicly, but does he want to show his former coach he made a mistake not trusting him in the past? Meanwhile the media will certainly look to see if Carlisle can use his knowledge about his former pupil to contain him.

Obi Toppin

Toppin spent his first three seasons in New York under current head coach Tom Thibodeau. Toppin was a slam dunk champ and a fan favorite but he never lived up to the expectations of a number 8 overall draft pick, failing to average more than 17 minutes per game in any of his three seasons. Toppin's inability to enter Thibodeau's circle of trust culminated in a confrontation after a frustrating round 2 game 4 playoff loss in which Toppin verbally lashed out at Thibodeau and reportedly had to be physically restrained by assistant coaches and teammates. Toppin was traded that offseason to Indiana whose pace and space offense seems to be a better fit for the athletic but defensively challenged Toppin. Toppin's return to the Garden during the regular season was eventful as he received some competitive sparring from former teammate Julius Randle and blew a dunk attempt while hot dogging, much to the delight of the New York crowd. How Toppin performs and how he is treated by Knicks fans and former teammates will certainly be a story to watch in Round 2.

OG Anunoby vs. Pascal Siakam

These two players won a championship together as teammates on the Toronto Raptors. Now they'll face each other as opponents on new teams. Anunoby is a defensive specialist who will likely spend most of his time defending Siakam who was brought to Indiana to play the role of secondary star with championship experience. Both players aim to sign big contracts this offseason with their respective new teams and both should be motivated to out perform their former teammate. This matchup will likely play a deciding factor in the outcome of this series.

Hicks vs. Knicks

The Knicks and Pacers have an historic rivalry that spawned stars and legends that have been passed down generations. Reggie's 6 points in 5 seconds. Spike Lee. Ewing's missed finger roll. LJ's 4 point play. Roy Hibbert's block on Melo. And the contrast of the big city New York Knickerbockers vs the good ol' midwest Indiana Pacers has always been a fascination in the media too. Unfortunately there will be no way for any of us to avoid Reggie Miller's mouth breathing for the next two weeks, who may even be an announcer for some of these games. Let's see if TNT can somehow mute the "FUCK REGGIE MILLER" and "CHERYL IS BETTER" chants. Either way, if you weren't well versed in the history of this iconic NBA rivalry, you likely will get educated during this series.

Pace & Space vs. Grit & Grind

This Round 2 matchup isn't just a clash of fan cultures, but of playing styles. Ironically it's the midwest team that plays with flash while the big city team that plays hard nosed physical basketball. During the regular season the Pacers boasted the highest scoring team with the second highest offensive rating and second fastest pace. Meanwhile the Knicks were dead last in pace but still managed a relatively efficient offense nonetheless. A big secret to their success is their physicality and their ability to rebound; they were the top offensive rebounding team in the league this year. And oh yeah, the Knicks finished top 10 in defensive rating while the Pacers finished bottom 10. So it is that we have the fastest team vs. the slowest team. An unstoppable object vs. an immovable force. Will the Knicks physicality and uncanny rebounding ability triumph or does the "offense wins championship" mantra that seems to have taken over the new NBA ring true?

Wally Szczerbiak vs. Tyrese Haliburton

This one feels like a pretty weak story line but it will probably come up eventually. MSG broadcaster Wally Szczerbiak once called Haliburton a "wannabe All-Star". Szczerbiak has since admitted he was "dead wrong" but at some point Haliburton gave Szczerbiak a good stare down after a layup. The origins of this beef likely lay in the aforementioned budding rivalry with Brunson and Haliburton. The context of the "wannabe All-Star" comment was Brunson being snubbed for the All-Star game last year while Haliburton made the squad. Unlikely that there's any still any animosity between these two but don't put it past the media to concoct fake drama, even when real drama in this series should be plentiful.

The Knicks could've drafted Tyrese Haliburton

Haliburton was drafted 12th overall by the Sacramento Kings. The Knicks had the 8th pick in that draft and used it on Obi Toppin. Toppin was traded for 2 second round picks and Haliburton is a two time All-Star. Who cares? Probably a bunch of nerds on reddit who will probably bring this up after every good performance Haliburton has this series (and probably after every bucket in the game thread).

Are there any other story lines you'd like to see develop during this Round 2 matchup?

EDIT: Some late additions based on your feedback!

Josh Hart vs. The State of Indiana

In his Roomates podcast, Josh Hart held nothing back when discussing the state of Indiana. Josh Hart knew he was starting trouble and now that he's going to be spending some more time in Indiana, you can be sure this is going to be revisited ad nauseam. Stefan Bondy of the NY Post is already on it actually. Hart himself may just be a story throughout these playoffs. His tenacious style of play and clutch buckets make him the type of player you love if he's on your team and the type you hate if he's not. The amount of trash he's been talking lately may make him the perfect heel to everyone who is not a Knicks fan.

T.J. Fucking McConnell

Speaking of players you hate only if he's not on your team, T.J. McConnell has killed the Knicks in his career. The playoffs are when role players can become heroes and Knicks fans are deathly afraid of this man. Other role players who might not be in the spotlight initially that you might want to keep on an eye in this series: Andrew Nembhard, Miles "Deuce" McBride, Myles Turner, Precious Achiuwa.

Gable Steveson was just cut; Why did he abandon his return to the 2024 Olympics?

Sat, 05/04/2024 - 04:55

Gable was just cut from WWE. Makes one wonder even more about why he's not going to the Olympics.

Gable's offered no explanation and I haven't even been able to find speculation or theories on how and why he's navigated wrestling the way he has the last 12 months.

"Steveson began training for a WWE career, then came back to the amateur side of the sport in April 2023 and in July steamrolled his way to a berth at the world championships. Just 10 days before the world championship meet in September, Steveson withdrew, offering no explanation.

Though his previous performances qualified him for the Olympic trials, Steveson hasn't wrestled in the amateur ranks since last June."

Seems like he was thinking he'd come back for Paris 2024. Which makes a lot of sense. Competing there would have raised his profile even more. And if he won another gold -- that's life changing history.

But instead, he mysteriously just dropped it. And suddenly, too, given the dropout 10 days beforehand.

Anyone seen any speculation on what happened? Kind of baffling.
