Where to live - 29M, starting a new job in Bellevue in 30 days. Balance between Lively/Calm

Thu, 04/25/2024 - 12:20

Hey there - I am moving for a job in Bellevue without a whole lot of time to visit or do the necessary due diligence to find a new place.
Bit of context - 29M, single, very active (gym/hiking/sports), love the outdoors, motorcycles, travel, Sunday markets. Been working remotely from London for the last 2 years. Love the big city energy and hate the suburbs (at this stage in my life).
I wont know anybody in the area so want to be someplace lively where meetups and events are common. That being said, I'm not really one for clubs or heavy drinking.

Looking for advice on which neighborhoods I should look at further (open to recommendations in Seattle as well) and any lessons learnt by people doing the same. Sorry if this is not a lot to go off of but time is sparse and really hoping for some direction.
Thanks!

### Training:

After a successful trip to Malaga, Spain in December to tackle a winter marathon (2:36:00 - see post history for race report), I took several weeks away from training over the festive / new year period to recover physically and mentally from the training block and focus on work & studies. I received news that my application for Championship Entry at London (sub-2:40) had been accepted and I was absolutely buzzing. Getting into London via the ballot in 2021 was the start of my running journey and I was excited to see how far I’d come from my 3:23:xx debut there as a complete newbie to running. As someone who was born and raised in the city, the London Marathon has always been special and for as long as I can remember, I had always spectated in person or followed on TV , despite not really having any interest in taking part myself. I have worked with an excellent coach since 2022 and we began the training block at the end of January. Through trial and error over past training blocks, we had decided that the best course of action for me this time was relatively low mileage, no double days and a consistent rest day every week. This approach had yielded great results in Malaga and was put in place mostly due to study / work commitments, but also a tendency for myself to get burned out from training too hard in previous blocks. While I ran a great time for Manchester Marathon 2023 (2:39) I found that running every single day and having several double days during the training block led to me not enjoying training, a general lack of motivation and constant niggling injuries. For London this year, the 10-week training block involved hitting 50-65 miles per week, consisting of 2 hard sessions on Tuesday & Thursday, a rest day on Friday and a long run on Sunday. A typical hard session would consist of 1 / 2 / 3 mile repeats with a ½ mile recovery jog, or a 5-10 mile chunk of marathon pace (5:40 min /mile) work sandwiched between a mile warmup/cooldown. The long run was mostly done at a steady pace (between 6-7min /mile pace) and several of them ended with 2-4 miles at marathon pace, just to get my legs used to hitting that pace when fatigued. Thankfully, the only niggling injury I managed to pick up was some inner ankle/arch of foot pain which I attributed to wearing Vaporfly 3 shoes too often (I was wearing them for all hard sessions and long runs). After discussing with my coach, we got rid of them for the 2 weeks before the race and I wore my Saucony Speed 3’s for all running during that time, the pain began to ease off and didn’t impact raceday. To hit a sub-2:30 I knew I would need to maintain a 5:43min /mile pace. To ensure that I slipped under that I decided that 5:40min / mile would be a reasonable target that could buy me valuable seconds if I were able to keep it up. All of my marathon pace sessions had been spent attempting to perfect those 5:40 miles, but I found that I always managed to go either slightly faster or slightly slower in training, so I decided that rather than fretting about live pace and a matter of seconds, I would predominantly run this race on feel and use the mile markers & good old fashioned manual splits to see me through.

### Pre-race:

I spent race week eagerly awaiting the big day while shaking off the maranoia fuelled worries in my head (I had convinced myself that I was getting ill and had developed some imaginary back pain). My raceday outfit was carefully curated and I was extremely excited for it to all come together. I had treated myself to a fancy pair of SOAR trail shorts because of their seemingly infinite amount of pockets to store gels, I bought a new pair of trusty socks for the race (Hilly brand ‘Marathon Fresh’) and my fiancé had surprised me with the premium SOAR version of my running club vest (Mornington Chasers) which fit like a dream. An essential raceday haircut on Thursday evening had me feeling great and oozing with confidence. The Vaporfly 3’s came out of the sinbin. I was ready for action. My fuelling strategy was to take a gel 5 minutes before starting, followed by another every 3 miles alongside a few sips of water at every aid station. After posting a picture on Strava of all those gels, I was given the label of ‘GI Champ’ for supposedly having enough of an iron stomach to take on 9 gels, as well as a Maurten 320 drink mix the evening before/morning of the race. Looking back, I am pretty sure that 9 is my absolute limit but I can’t see myself ever needing any more than that in the future anyway. I used a mixture of Maurten & Hi5 brand gels, with two of them containing caffeine, which were to be taken early on in the race. For the first time ever, I actually got a decent night’s sleep on racecday eve and woke up at 5:30am for a breakfast of toast, PB & honey along with a cup of builder’s tea. I sipped the Maurten drink mix on the tube journey to London Bridge, where we changed trains and got on an insanely packed train to Blackheath. I was excited to experience the Championship start area and was pleased that the insane crowds started to thin out as we turned away from the Blue starting pen to head towards it. What I was greeted with was rather underwhelming at first, as it looked like a smaller version of any other starting pen I had ever been to. However, it was a nice luxury to have queue-free urinals and access to plenty of bottled water and Lucozade Sport. Through the fence I could see the likes of Emile Cairess and his pacer for the day, Phil Sesemann doing their strides in their ‘VIP’ area and this really got the adrenaline pumping as I could hear the elite women’s starting gun firing in the distance. The real Championship magic began when it was finally time to head towards the start line. Wanting to get the full experience, I made it near the front as we lined up and it was absolutely insane to be standing meters behind of some of the finest marathon talent in the world (Bekele, Tola, Cairess etc) as they received their introductions from the announcer. We shuffled forward as the beating heart sound was being pumped from the speakers and before I knew it, legendary GB Olympian Kelly Holmes had smashed the start button and off we flew.

### Race:

The first few miles are ever so slightly downhill, so it is very easy to get carried away, however within seconds I could overhear several surrounding runners revealing that they were also attempting to hit my goal time, so I settled in behind a couple of Clapham Chasers vests and tried not to let them out of my sight. To my delight, I noticed that all the mile markers had the live gun time displayed on them, so pretty early onwards I decided that I wasn’t going to look at my watch at all. I knew that sooner or later the GPS was going to get skewed by the tunnels and skyscrapers, so there was no point in getting used to checking the bleeps on my watch. My plan was to mentally add 5min 40sec to the time displayed on each mile marker and try and reach the next one bang on time, this gave me something to think about and settle my nerves. I went through the first 5km in 17:42 and was pretty happy with that. In my head I had split up the race into three sections: 2 x 10 mile races & 1 x 10km race. For the entirety of the first 10 mile ‘race’ I was absolutely cruising and enjoying the atmosphere. The only negative in this part was the fact that while attempting to toss aside a bottle of water at an aid station, I accidentally threw away one of my gels. While not a cataclysmic fuck up, I was irritated as I knew I would now have to rely on one of the Lucozade Sport gels provided at certain ‘fuel stations’, which is not ideal as I’d never tried them before. However, I figured that I could save that one until the very end and deal with the potential shit-storm (pardon the pun) later. My fiancé always amazes me with how she manages to spectate so efficiently at all of my races. After dropping me at the start, she had a great spot on mile 9 and seeing her screaming my name was the icing on the cake while feeling on top of the world this early on in the race. The second 10 mile ‘race’ went fantastic and I went through halfway in 1:14:46. I knew this was cutting it very fine but I would rather that then go any faster and run out of steam. My club had set up a cheer station at some point in the second 10 mile ‘race’ and their noise and energy was amazing when I flew past them twice on the out-and-back. It was at mile 21 where my care-free cruising came to an end and the wheels started to fall off. At first it was my left calf that suddenly pinged and started to cramp, shortly followed by more of the same on my right. This exact problem occurred in Malaga and I was dreading it happening again. While not completely debilitating, the cramps meant that I had to slow down a tad, which was not ideal but meant that rather than stopping to stretch like I had seen others resort to, I could at least grit my teeth and hammer out those final few miles. Anyone who knows anything about London knows that once you leave Canary Wharf and jump on the straight road towards Embankment, the crowds are insane. I had anticipated my cramping issue to rear its ugly head and knew that on this last 5 mile stretch I would be deep inside the pain cave. To combat this, I had asked my friends and family who were spectating to position themselves between miles 23 – 26 in order to give me a much needed boost. Seeing familiar faces always helps but after taking one mouthful of the untested gel, the taste was foul and I instantly had to spit it out and rely on whatever pitiful amount of glycogen I had left in the tank to see me through. As I passed the Eye and approached Big Ben, I glanced at my watch for the first time in the whole race just to check wether the sub-2:30 was still on. I was disheartened to see that it looked just out of my grasp and I started to slow down. It didn’t take long for me to pull my finger out and shake that feeling off however, as I decided that 2:30 sounds a hell of a lot better than 2:31. This revelation got me sprinting around that right turn at Buckingham Palace, down the mall and I staggered across the line in 2:30:59.

### Post-race:

I hadn’t hit my A-goal but I wasn’t going to let that spoil the party. I had shaved 5 minutes off my personal best and couldn’t be disappointed. Grabbed my medal and hobbled over to my family for the obligatory pictures and celebrations. We decided to head back home to north west London for some celebratory pints that ended up being one too many. A very sore and hungover day at work on Monday followed, where many electrolyte drinks and ibuprofen were consumed. My wedding is taking place later this year as well as the final parts of my study, so for the remainder of the year I will likely only be able to run casually and not train hard. However we all know that is absolute bullshit and I will have signed up for a new race within a few months! Who knows what the future holds, if I can somehow get rid of those cramps, how great I felt for most of that race leaves me confident of shooting for somewhere in the low 2:20s next time, maybe even a 2:19 further down the line, why the hell not!?

First Marathon Completed on Sunday (TCS London Marathon 2024) as a beginner runner

Thu, 04/25/2024 - 07:41

So on Sunday, after running on and off for 11 months (consistently since October), I ran my first marathon.

Goals

A Somewhere between 4:10-4:30 Yes

B Finish Without Walking Yes

C Finish Yes

Official finish time: 04:17:43

Splits

First half: 02:10:30
Second half: 02:07:13 - negative split, woohoo!

Getting a Place

I've always wanted to run the London Marathon, despite the fact until last April, I had never run (other than once during lockdown, where I ran/walked 5k in close to 40 minutes and could barely walk for 3 days afterwards, aka sprinted a few hundred meters then walked a few hundred meters gasping until I could sprint again). I'd been to watch it in person several times over the years and entered the ballot for 7 years in a row with no luck. Last year I went to watch it again and I told myself there and then, I am running this next year, and I'm going to go for a run tomorrow and try and get back into it.

Entered the ballot but also applied to a few charities as a close family member of mine had suffered with cancer in the previous year and I thought it would be a great way to raise funds for a charity that meant a lot to me following that experience. I applied to these charities at the end of May, and I was offered one within a week! I had never applied for a charity place before because I felt as though they should go to people who can really resonate with the charity, I didn't want to feel as though I was "using" a charity purely because I wanted to run it as a personal goal, but this time it felt right and I wanted to give back to said family member following their cancer treatment. Of the 5 charities I applied for, 4 of them offered me a place. I had submitted a strong application and it was very clear that the charity meant something to me, but I was very shocked when the offers kept coming! I had obviously accepted the first one offered so had to turn the other 3 down.

Training

For context, I had never run in my life, and I have never been an athletic person. In fact, I hadn't so much has done a single form of structured exercise for about 3 years leading up to starting running. My base level fitness was genuinely zero, in the bin, and I smoked from the age of 17 to 29 (I gave up in April 2023, I'm 30 now), so my lung capacity was awful at first. I started running in May 2023, not really having a clue what I was doing. I ran/walked a few 5ks, and managed to run a full 5k without stopping within 3 weeks in 27:40. I had no concept of whether this was a "good" time or not, but following this, all of my runs ranged between a 5:15-5:50 kilometere pace with a heart rate anywhere from 170-190 (I'm sure you can see where this is going). A week after that first 5k I managed a 10k without stopping in 57 minutes. I kept running 3 times a week, anywhere from 5k-12k at a time at those paces and sure enough, within 6 weeks, I had a niggle in my left knee. I tried to run through it but it got painful. Went and got an MRI and bam, stress fracture, had to take 3 months off running completely. September rolls around and I'm back to square one.

I then discovered what easy running actually was and spent between mid September and mid December running only easy runs, no speed work at all. I ran 3 times a week anywhere between 20k-35k weekly total, and I managed to build my longest run up to 16k which was the week before Christmas. I then started an "official" marathon training plan.

I started running 4 times a week, starting Boxing Day, and pretty much did that consistently all the way up to the marathon aside from one break in mid March where I had a minor calf strain and was advised by my physio that I had to rest. I was on my tempo session and felt almost a "ping" in my calf and instantly had to stop, and basically hobbled home. Luckily I caught it very early and it healed quickly but it did mean I had to miss 10 days of running including 2 long runs which was a nightmare and really mentally challenging - this was the low point of the block for me as up to this point I was so dedicated and physically not being able to run was so frustrating.

I roughly followed a Runna plan and stuck to the distances on the plan like glue, but I did one tempo run a week and the other 3 easy (the plan also had an interval sesion, but I just ran that same distance the session would've been at an easy pace. All of my long runs were also done at an easy pace. Following my stress fracture, I was extremely paranoid about re-injuring myself and my priority was making it to the start line, I never really cared too much about a time - but in the back of my mind, I always had a sub 4:30 as a goal. I also wasn't naive to the fact that I had only been running a few months so my legs were not conditioned to be doing 2 speed sessions a week as well as increasing the distances week on week.

Long runs wise, I did: 14k, 16k x2, 18k x2, half marathon, 24k, 26k x2, 30k, 32k, and then 33k was my longest long run 3 weeks out. Weekly mileage peaked at 65k 3 weeks out, and generally sat somewhere betwen 45k-55k. Going in to the marathon I had run 650k total since January 1st. I was happy with my volume, but I was a bit skeptical of what would be a realistic finish time for me given that I had done very little speed work. I ran a 10k all out in early March and just dipped under 50 mins (49:57) and this was the only form of "time trial" I did the whole block.

All of the race predictors suggested I was capable of somehwere between a 3:58-4:15 marathon, and my Garmin time prediction was 3:51 (LOL). I didn't really know how to judge a marathon pace because I'd only ever run my long runs at an easy pace, so I didn't really know how to plan my race.

Race Day

I carb loaded for 3 days before (700g carbs a day Thursday-Saturday, 10g per kg, I am 70kg). I found this quite difficult on the first day but by the Saturday I kind of got used to it. I was terrified of "bonking" during the marathon so I really took the carb loading seriously. I see so many people say its useless but in the grand scheme of things it wasn't a huge inconvenience to my life if the benefits were going to outweigh the fact my taste buds had the worst 3 days of their life (I still can't look at a bagel or a salted pretzel now, almost a week on).

My start time was 10:38-10:43. I arrived at the start around 9:15 so plenty of time to use the toilet and get my head in the game, ate 2 PB bagels upon wake, a third on the train journey there and a maurten solid bar, so I had taken on just under 200g carbs the morning of. I also drank 500ml of water with my breakfast and a black coffee then another litre of water with 2 electrolyte tablets in it (500mg sodium) whilst travelling to the start line. I was PAINFULLY nervous, way more nervous than I thought I'd be. I cried on the Saturday (LOL!) and was thinking of ways I could get out of it or defer, I was physically shaking! I only slept around 2 hours the night before, all broken sleep too. For some reason as I got to the start line, all those nerves just disappeared, and I got really excited!

I stepped over the start line and suddenly got really emotional. "Woah, I'm acrually running this marathon!" I thought. There were crowds instantly cheering us on and I was high fiving all the kids stood at the side of the road holdling their hands out.

I went out with the aim of staying around a 6:10ish kilometer which would have got me around a 4:20 finish and just thought I'll see how I get on. I was very conscious of hitting the wall later on and I wanted to respect the distance and enjoy my first marathon, as well as appreciate how lucky I was to be running a major as my first ever marathon (or running race in general!), the finish time really wasn't something I put pressure on myself about.

I took a Maurten 160 gel every 6k (6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36) so 6 total, 40g carbs each, as well as 1 full bottle of lucozade sport handed to me by a friend at the 25k mark, so in total I took on 270g carbs across the whole marathon. I also took a whole pack of salt stick fastchews (10 total, 500mg sodium) as well as a further bottle handed to me by my family at the 16k mark - 500ml water with 2 electrolyte tablets in it (500mg sodium), so 1000mg sodium plus I believe the maurten gels have 50mg in each?

I hit the halfway mark in 2:10:30 so 30 seconds over a 4:20 time, but I still felt so strong. There was not a single doubt in my mind that I would finish this marathon, but I was skeptical of hitting the wall later on so I carried on at the same pace as I felt so comfortable. Before I knew it, I was leaving Canary Wharf and I was hitting the 20 mile marker. I couldn't quite fathom how strong I STILL felt! The wall was nowhere to be seen, and I was still smiling from ear to ear and having such an amazing time. By this point, I'd say around 1/3 on the course with me were walking, so I had to do a lot of weaving from this point until the end. I almost considered sending it to the end at this point because I still felt absolutely fine but I had a battle with myself in my head and thought "its your first marathon, do you want to cruise to the end at this pace and have an incredible experience, or risk burning yourself out in another mile or two for the sake of a finish time a few minutes faster?". Ultimately, I went with the first option.

I got to around the 37k mark, had taken my last gel about a mile prior, saw my family one last time and I STILL felt strong. I couldn't believe it! I was waiting for the inevitable cramps or the wall to come, but even at 38k, nowhere in sight! I looked down at my watch and at this point I was pretty much certain that I would break 4:20. I made the decision around this point to just empty the tank and run my heart out to the end, and thats what I did.

I got to the finish, looked down and saw that I'd finished in 04:17:43. Not only had I finished over 12 minutes under what I wanted, I had managed to NEGATIVE SPLIT MY FIRST MARATHON, AND finish feeling strong!

I am so so so happy with how the day went. It was an INCREDIBLE experience from start to finish, I don't think I've ever been so happy! I smiled the entire race and felt so so strong thoughout. Absolutely nailed the fuelling and hydration, I didn't feel hungry at all during the race (sometimes towards the end of my long runs in training I'd get hungry towards the end), I had no cramps, and even when I'd finished (sorry for the TMI but we're all runners here) my urine colour indicated I was still hydrated.

Definitely could have run that quicker, I think if I'd really pushed it I could have run somehwere in the low 4's, but I don't regret playing it safe and holding back because I had such an amazing first marathon experience whereas I know a lot of people really suffer towards the end after going out too fast in their first marathon and just end up being massively humbled by the distance. I really didn't want this to happen to me and I'm really proud of myself for holding back and just enjoying myself. I am so hungry for more now though! Sub 4 is 100% on the cards for my next go around!

My Experience of the London Marathon

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 17:59

Hey All, long time lurker first time poster. It’s been a couple days since the race but I’ve had the come down and for some reason I’m in sharing mood. Apologies as all of this is done on mobile, so if the format is terrible then I’ll end up just deleting this.

Race Information Name: London Marathon Date: 21st April 2024 Distance: 26.2 miles Location: London, UK Time: 5:44:47

Now I’ve seen a lot of these and there only seems to be 3 goals listed, so apologies if that’s against the rules or a faux pas, but I had six in mind leading up to this

Goals (in order of priority) A: Complete the Run B: Complete the run in time to watch the Liverpool match C: Finish the run uninjured D: Sub 6:30 E: Have Fun F: Sub 6:00

Splits:

Context: Right, so I know what you’re probably thinking; do we need another London Marathon race report? And do we need a report for an unimpressive finish time? And the answer to both is also probably No However I wanted to share this for the sake of anyone new to running, new to their first marathon, and anyone else in between or outside these conditions.

Maybe the majority of redditors here will look at that time and think; “this is another half arsed first attempt at a marathon” But I have some reasons, not excuses, that make me extremely proud of this feat and I may even have some helpful advice for future runners. Although with that time, a good portion is jogging along with few spots of running. I’d say I have excuses, but they’re not, they’re reasons that need context behind the numbers.

So firstly, this was my first ever marathon. And I’m incredibly lucky that London was my first go at one considering how many other people also want to participate each year.

I secured my place through my companies partnership with a charity. So there was a team of us fundraising on their behalf, for over about 6 months leading up to it. (Still open so I’m unsure of our total £ at the moment, but we’re all happy so far!)

Now I’d done maybe 7-10 half marathons prior, with varying degrees of success. The Dublin Rock n Roll HM was a vibe, as well as both of The Great North Run HM’s, the Liverpool HM where I stayed up till 2am playing co-op Gears of War & drinking rosé the night before was a lowlight, but I digress.

So I was already pretty confident that I could get around the first 13.1 miles ok at least. It was the other 13.1m that was daunting on me as the challenge.

I looked at a lot of beginner and intermediate training plans, but that start of them always seemed below my ability level & the end above what I thought I could do. So I basically decided to do as many runs, of any distance I could, which admittedly aren’t as far as most here are used to, interspersed with some longer 20k+ runs whenever I could fit them in with recovery time afterwards.

I should probably mention my reasons for being happy with my slow 5:45 time, so let’s start at the start. I was born with Cystic Fibrosis, for those unaware, it’s a hereditary genetic condition that is caused by a faulty gene responsible for the production of a protein for the membrane of each cell in the body. I’m pretty sure that’s mostly correct, but it’s been a long time since I was diagnosed and i’m not a Doctor or Scientist, just your humble sedentary accountant. It has something to do with chloride ions and osmosis. That’s enough science for now, basically I lose A LOT of salt, primarily through sweat, and this affects a lot of other bodily functions. It’s primarily known as a lung disorder, due to the chronic chest infections and scarring of lunch tissue from them. Now luckily, my case isn’t as classic as the majority of those with this, of which I’m equally thankful for and guilty over if I ever bring it up and draw comparisons to those who truly suffer worse.

So yeah, keeping on top of my salt levels is something I need to check up on if I’m in hot weather conditions, or you know; exercising, especially exercising a lot for a long time. Without enough salt, it makes the mucus inside of me that much thicker which in turn makes it harder to breathe. And I don’t think I need to tell you all how important breathing is to cardiovascular exercise. In my excitement the morning of, I’d forgotten to bring extra salt tablets with me. Luckily at the point during the run that I realised this, I passed a popular chains drive thru/walk through window that was right next to the barrier of the course and they happily provided a handful of sachets for me to add to my water for every other drink.

I think you can see where I’m going with this, but wait, there’s more. Maybe about ten years ago, I had my first experience with an open bar provided by the company credit card, let’s just say this resulted in me dislocating every metatarsal in my right foot. That resulted in two surgeries that left me with two metal plates, a screw, and two pins in order to keep it all together. The pins came out after six weeks but the rest remains to this day. Oh and I was also hit by a car 10 weeks before the race itself, but that’s another story for another time. Needless to say, everything in the universe tells me that I’m just not built for running, but this was for a great cause, and I’d already entered the ballot unsuccessfully twice before. How could I turn down this opportunity, I’m not one to back down from a challenge so I felt I had the mental aspect locked down.

I’m not a breakfast person, so every Saturday morning park run or any run I start in the AM has never been properly fuelled. In hindsight I could have done a lot better on a lot of my Half Marathons if I’d taken my carb intake seriously. Knowing what I was in for, I knew I’d have to up my game, so that’s what I did. The week leading up to it, I pretty much exclusively ate curry & rice for dinner, slowly reducing the protein portion and upping the rice as the days got closer to race day. I always thought it was overkill for a HM to bring energy gels, but always felt like I was running on fumes by the end of them. I did some online calculators and I took 12 gels with me for the Marathon, along with two packs of fruit pastilles (jelly babies are a great alternative) and ate a pack of Haribo Tangfastics on the walk to the start line. (The walk from Greenwich station to Blackheath to blue zone start is very uphill so I do not recommend anyone follow this mistake and get the closest train to your start zone)

The run itself, I don’t remember much of the landmarks. I mean I’ve been to London before so I wasn’t exactly looking out for them, I had tunnel vision of only what was in front of me because I was so focused on just moving forward. I felt that if I ever stopped, I’d never start again. Apologies but I couldn’t give you a mile by mile report, because to be honest, each mile was as tough as the last and there’s no sugar coating that.

You cannot believe the boost you receive from the supporters lining the streets all throughout the course. There’s so many participants running, but there’s even more people out for the day just to cheer on strangers. I highly recommend getting your name printed on your running top you wear on the day, strangers will see this and cheer you on personally. I got this in Newcastle but it wasn’t something I did for London and I sorely missed people shouting me personally to move on. There were so many people with cardboard signs that said something along the lines of “Touch here for an energy boost” I’m not sure when or how or why I decided to, but these people had came out to give encouragement to strangers, and I don’t want to disappoint. So every time I saw one of these signs, especially later on when I was taking a walking breather, I’d make sure to hit it (but not hard enough to ruin their sign!) and give an audible “Boop” then run as far as I could out of their line of sight. I like to think that it made them glad to have done it, and it definitely helped me push on.

I also cannot stress the importance of a good playlist (if you run with music) as you don’t want to be faffing about changing tracks mid run.

Now if you’ve got this far, congrats to yon and thank you for reading.

In the end, the combination of; running for a charity, mentally wanting to prove to myself I could do it, massively carb loading in the days before and making sure I was properly hydrated and electrolyte balanced helped me beat most of my goals.

I managed to complete goals A, D and F, so I was absolutely thrilled to see the text when I crossed the finish line saying I did a 5:44:47 I almost managed goals B and C; I’d tied my right shoe too tight and ended up with a nasty blood blister mid race, which affected my gait and caused me to pull my left groin muscle that leaded to a slower second half of the marathon. I finished in time to watch the second half of the Liverpool match, but by that time I had such a running high & we were already winning that I couldn’t focus on anything but getting back to my hotel. I don’t believe many people truly achieve goal E, I think anyone who says otherwise is either a liar or psychopath haha it’s not the run itself that gives the enjoyment it’s the result afterwards (which is AMAZING)

The TL;DR is Ensure you get plenty of carbs in the days leading up to the race, and enough for during it. Don’t tie your shoes too tight (or too loose) Have a good playlist (if that’s your jam) Electrolytes are important even you’re a “healthy” not CF adult Have some supporters with you to cheer you on, or have your name printed on you and let strangers do it Follow a training plan Don’t get hit by a car or have a gammy foot, that just hurts TRY to be respectful for where you throw away empty bottles and gels Watch out for all of the litter, there will be a lot, especially if you start in the last wave like I did.

Thanks for reading, all the best Sports Lewis

The 63 questions answered by Turki alalShikh in his AMA

Wed, 04/24/2024 - 13:52

That's a lot of questions. I didn't see a compilation of them anywhere, so here they are. Discuss.

Why do you rate Tyson Fury so highly when he is yet to fight the top heavyweights of his era?

He will fight them all.

What’s your framework for anti corruption? Who oversees and investigates unusual scoring and decisions?

it frustrates me a lot and I feel the solution is to introduce technology to the judging.

Do you see multiple cards being held outside of Saudi, any locations besides Wembley?

yes.

Will you ever open ringside ticket purchases up to fans? Lots of people would love to travel for the fights but want to sit in the best seats next to the ring.

yes, will do!

Thanks for making all these great fights possible in such a short amount of time. That being said, there are still some important names in boxing like Tank , Canelo, Inoue . Are we going to see any of those names fighting in the Saudis?

yes!

Do you want to see Naoya Inoue fighting in SA? If so, who do you want him to fight?

It will be a surprise.

Will you pay to stage Canelo - Benavidez?

I have several plans in mind for each of them but against different fighters.

What is your long term aim in the sport? Where do you see your boxing vision in 5 years? The biggest promoter or still working with Hearn etc?

More regulated.

We know the heavyweight division is the division with the richest history in the sport… So who is your favourite heavyweight of all time, and why?

Larry Holmes because of his jabs!

What is your plan for the future of boxing and Saudi Arabia? Do you plan to branch out into hosting events in other countries, or would you like to build Saudi Arabia into the mecca of boxing?

We will support Boxing in Saudi and outside of Saudi Arabia too.

What do you think the next fight for Crawford will be (if you can share)? Also what’s your interest in naoya inoue and bam Rodriguez? I think they’re incredible fighters that aren’t as popular as they should be because of weight classes. I think Saudi Arabia would be a great platform to help promote these fighters who should get more shine. Thanks for all the great fights!

Agree! and we will focus on those weights too.

Do you have any interest in making Bud Crawford vs. Boots Ennis at 154 in the future?

yes.

Given I'm Australian how do you feel about Tim Tszyu? it seems you like the heavier weight classes, do you follow anyone in the lower classes? Who's your number one pound for pound boxers if you had to pick?

Pound for Pound currently Inoue and Crawford. and regarding Tim, I was surprised with his last defeat!

would you ever be interested in working with boxers in 135-140 weight classes? a lot of great talent in that pool we’d love to see match up while they’re young

Yes, we are looking into that!

Once Wilder beats Zhang is Wilder/AJ back on the cards?

I hope to see this fight one day.

the fights in saudi arabia have been great but the same cannot be said for the atmosphere in the arena. are there any plans to improve this? any way to make the fights more accessible to passionate fans from around the world?

The atmosphere is great and people are loving it and it's already accessible for everyone.

Are you interested in making Terence Crawford versus Jaron Ennis this year?

Yes. I want to watch this fight!

Are there any fighters that you haven’t worked with yet that you would like to involve in one of your future events?

Inoue and Canelo.

I know Riyadh Season has just invested a big amount of money into the gaming esports scene. Now that Undisputed is officially being supported by you and many great people, will see live competitions for Undisputed in the future?

we are currently supporting and and we have good surprises coming in the future.

What is next? Is this only the start? Are we going to see names like Tank, Canelo, Inoue fighting in the Saudis?

Yes.

If Beterbiev beats Bivol, can we see Beterbiev against Canelo? Undisputed at 168 vs undisputed at 175!!

I will try on having Beterbiev or Bivol against Benavidez.

Are you interested in buying and taking over the pbc stable, I think that would be great. They have way too many inactive fighters, good talent too!

No, I am working with them.

How long do you plan on supporting boxing and promoting the best fights?

Till the end.

Is hrgovic v dubois for the ibf title?

maybe.

Who is your personal favourite boxer of all time?

To name a few, I love Roberto Duran, Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali, Tyson Fury and many more.

Who’s Crawford fighting lol

On Wednesday you will know!

Tim Tszyu v Bud Crawford? Im a massive fan of Tim, are you able to just let me know if that’s what you’re looking at?

this was a fight that I was preparing for but unfortunately Tszyu was defeated.

What is the biggest fight that can be made in boxing according to the current boxing market?

Fury vs Usyk, Fury vs. AJ , Canelo vs. Crawford

who are your favorite female fighters and when will see a womens fight on one of your cards ?

Several ones including Amanda Serrano and expect to watch something in October in Riyadh.

Firstly, What would be your top 3 fights to put on over the next couple of years?

Fury vs AJ, Canelo vs Crawford, Benavidez vs. (Bivol or Beterbiev)

Will you be the one to get all of the major boxing Networks together to agree to broadcast all fights and share the wealth?

I hope so.

What are your thoughts on Naoya Inoue? Are there at least some small mentions of you hosting a fight for the monster?

I really like his style and I will be going to Japan next month, and I might meet him by then.

With the 5x5 coming up, are you planning/considering any other formats? e.g. tournaments like the World Boxing Super Series and the Super 6.

We have new fresh formats that are coming - maybe we will start one in December.

What is being done at the grassroots level? The shows the Kingdom have been putting on have been great but has there been any investment in local gyms? Will we see a future Saudi world champion in boxing?

We have several investments to grow future champions and one of them is Mike Tyson Gym in Riyadh and a lot of great talents are training currently there.

Mr Turki, You’ve been giving the fans the fights they’ve wanted. But what is that one fight you really want to make ?

Fury vs. AJ, Crawford Vs. Canelo, Benavidez vs. Beterbiev

Hello. My main question concerns the lower weight classes. Are you interested in promoting more fights involving boxers below featherweight?

Yes.

Are there any rule changes you would like to see to make the sport better?

I would see more technology entering into the judging system in the future such as the VAR in football.

What kind of old fights would you have arranged? Maybe some of your favorites per decade?

Frazier vs Ali. Duran vs Sugar Ray Leonard

I know you countered David Benavidez' offer to fight Canelo in Saudi Arabia by instead offering him the winner of Bivol / Beterbiev. I personally believe you would be able to generate more money with a Canelo vs Benavidez fight, especially considering the cultural relevance of the fight in Mexico, LatAm, and the U.S.. Under what circumstances would you agree to promote a fight for Canelo Vs Benavidez?

let's see maybe in the future!

Will you host fights beyond focusing on the heavyweight division towards lower weight classes and possibly hold tournaments in the future?

we will be focusing on all weight classes.

Do you believe ypu can do business with PBC?

I already did and will do more.

Outside of the Heavyweights, what is your favourite division to see fights from?

Middle weight class division.

Any chance to have Ngannou vs the loser of Zhang vs Wilder. Would be a fun addition to any card

No.

Considering the fact that Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will be tied up for two fights and Anthony Joshua won't be able to fight them, is it possible for him to fight either Zhang or Wilder next?

everything is possible!

What is your mid- long term plan for boxing? Will you be concentrating on some of the key divisions outside of HW in future? There are insane world level/ unification fights to be held across divisions.

for our coming cards, will be including all weight classes.

Will Joshua fight the winner of Fury/Usyk next? And what’s your favourite weight class? Thank you for the great fights!

We will try to make this fight and I like several weight classes!

Will the second 5v5 happen in September? Canelo vs Bud?!?

No.

In your opinion who are the top 5 p4p fighters off all time?

Roberto Duran, Larry Holmes, Tyson Fury, Naoya Inoue and Terrence Crawford.

Will we see canelo fight in saudi against Crawford or benevidez?

I will try.

The Anime inspired music video that was released for the Ring of Fire... was Incredible. Have you considered creating a new take on Boxing Anime...?

We are currently working on Anime and movies too!

Are you interested in the smaller weight divisions, and in the future, could we have an event highlighting them along with the bigger names like Inoue, Bam, Nakatani?

Yes, indeed!

It has been great seeing Justis Huni and Jai Opetaia get fights on major cards. Are there any other boxers from Australia or New Zealand that you would like to see fight in The Kingdom?

yes, we have had Opetaia and Huni before and we also had Parker.

What originally got you interested in staging big boxing matches in Saudi to begin with? What do you see as the future of the sport?

I wanted to grow its fanbase in my country and we already have a lot of Saudi fans who love the sport! Regarding the future of boxing, I'm optimistic!

I mean this in no disrespect, but is it possible to remove a lot of the stall time in between fights? Your cards are great but last a significant amount of time because of the amount of stall time between fights.

Thank you very much for your feedback, we will make sure to fix this in the coming event!

Can you give us Crawford vs Canelo?

I hope so.

Thank you for making in the span of 6 months: Usyk vs Fury, Beterbiev vs Bivol, Wilder vs Parker, Zhang vs Parker, Dubois vs Miller, Zhang vs Wilder, Dubois vs Hrgovic. My question is: What's next?

Surprises are coming. very soon!

Will you make Jaron Ennis vs Terence Crawford happen? It’s the best possible fight to make right now.

I will try to make it this year.

Would you be able to bring Naoya Inoue to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and stage his fights against champions of the 126lb division or even a mega fight against Gervonta Davis?

I will try to bring Inoue!

With all the potential matchups heating up at 140lbs (Matias, Cruz, Teo, Haney, Tank, Sandor Martin, Hitchins, Garcia, etc). Do you have any plans on expanding your promotional portfolio to incorporate this division?

yes in the future for sure!

What are your plans for boxing in the US and when can we expect a US debut?

stay tuned for a surprise on Wednesday!

Will there be any Funding going towards The Undisputed Boxing game?

We are already supporting it.

Ronaldo or Messi? Be honest!

Maradona.

Are you going to make fights outside of Saudi as well?

Yes. We will do in London and Los Angeles this year.
