A pro’s pro: Oilers’ Janmark proving his worth during playoff run

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 18:14

EDMONTON — Mattias Janmark is the spare key you hid under the rear wheel well, when you lose your keys on a hike at that campground that’s well out of cell phone range.

He’s the flashlight you charged up, the generator you bought, the extra blanket you stored when the power goes out and nobody is sure when it’s coming back on.

And today, as it becomes clear that top-line left-winger Adam Henrique will need more time to recover from his suspected ankle injury with Round 2 set to begin Wednesday in Vancouver, it’s clear now why Edmonton invested ice time all season long in a 31-year-old playoff veteran. Ahead of that sexier, 21-year-old prospect the fan base likely would have preferred to see.

“Throughout my career, I’ve done exactly this,” Janmark said after practice on Tuesday morning, where he skated on Connor McDavid’s left side, in lieu of Henrique. “My first year (in Dallas), we were down 3-0 in Game 7 after the first period, and I got to center a line with Jamie Benn and Jason Spezza the rest of the game.

“Throughout my career, maybe not in the playoffs as much but throughout the regular season, I’ve been able to go up and down the lineup, so it’s nothing new, really. Playing with Davo, every time you get the chance you want to take advantage.”

“Davo,” of course, is the Oilers captain and meal ticket, a.k.a. the best ice hockey player currently residing here on earth.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Round 2: Canucks vs. Oilers

Keep up with the latest news and analysis as the Vancouver Canucks battle the Edmonton Oilers in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Full coverage

It’s not easy, they say, to step in beside the prodigal talents like McDavid, Sid Crosby or Wayne Gretzky. It’s a concept that has always intrigued, that the pressure to perform next to the very best can expose the shortcomings of those who are unworthy, or perhaps just strip a player of the confidence that such an assignment requires.

Somehow, however, this intelligent, sneaky funny Swede has always been up to the task.

There’s an Ikea joke in here somewhere, something about a player who slides into any arrangement as seamlessly as a Billy bookcase.

“I think it’s been pretty easy, to be honest. That’s how I feel,” Janmark said, with a look that is almost apologetic. “I would think the hard part is the expectations. You can play a really good game and if you don’t come up with something on the score sheet, it’s going to be viewed upon as a bad game.

“You have to level up your game and you’ve got to contribute. You can’t just look good out there,” he said. “But as far as playing with (McDavid), I feel like it’s been very easy every time I’ve gotten a chance.”

Janmark will play the first few shifts on the top line Wednesday, and after that head coach Kris Knoblauch will begin a process at which he has proven adept. The first penalty kill will employ Janmark, not McDavid, and when the penalty ends you’ll see Leon Draisaitl next to McDavid at five-on-five.

After that, Janmark will mostly hold down the gig as long as it’s working, and the Oilers are ahead. If they’re trailing, the score clock will hasten the deployment of Knoblauch’s top two weapons on the same unit, and Janmark will find his place elsewhere.

“I think it’d be a little more ‘by committee,’” was how Knoblauch described Henrique’s replacement. “Janmark, definitely will be there for some shifts. But whoever’s playing well, moving up and down… Janmark is a huge part of our penalty kill, so making sure that he’s fresh and ready for that… And, you know, we have a lot of guys that we think can move up and play there. periodically.”

Down the lineup, Connor Brown will get his first playoff assignment as a fourth-line right-winger in Game 1. When he signed, this scenario would have been impossible to imagine. But Brown’s season went where it went, and Janmark, as is his wont, has simply logged another year as the dependable pro he is.

There is always a prospect who makes you wonder why he’s in Bakersfield and Janmark, a 20-point, blue-collar guy, is on Edmonton’s fourth line. And to be honest, if this was Anaheim, or even Calgary, we would question the same thing.

But without Janmark, Knoblauch may be tempted to elevate a young Dylan Holloway, who has finally found a footing on the third line.

Give Holloway a shift or two with No. 97 in Game 1? Sure.

But the last thing the kid needs is to lay his head on the pillow on Tuesday night knowing he’s playing with a superstar the next evening— not when he’s only recently found comfort playing next to Ryan McLeod in an NHL bottom six.

No, this is why you have Janmark. He buys development time for Holloway, and if Holloway passes him by, he’ll quietly return to his role.

Not using him now, in this situation…? Why did you even sign him in the first place?

“The principles are the same, I think,” he said of moving up to the top line. “You’ve got to play to (McDavid’s) strengths a little, and that will help your game a lot. So it for sure changes — but the principles don’t change.”

He’ll play the same responsible game he always plays, a staple of a guy who will play 1,000 games in the league one day. And if he bangs in a goal, nobody will be surprised.

Because Mattias Janmark, simply put, is a pro.

And that’s what pros do.

NHL Top 16 Mock Draft: Who will go after Macklin Celebrini?

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 17:42

For the first time since 2010 the draft lottery did nothing to change the order of the top end of the first round, with the San Jose Sharks hanging on to the first pick, Chicago second, and Anaheim third.

With the first 16 picks of the NHL Draft set, we now know which teams are in position to draft which players. Celebrini surely will go to San Jose first overall, and from there it opens up.

The draft itself will go ahead on June 28-29 this year, at The Sphere in Las Vegas. But before we get there, here’s a look at our early mock draft, which takes into consideration player skill, team needs and drafting tendencies.

1. San Jose Sharks: Macklin Celebrini, C

Seems too good to be true that he would end up in a place where he once played minor hockey and so close to dad’s work.

2. Chicago Blackhawks: Artyom Levshunov, D

This player provides a two-way game with some bite. He skates well, shoots it well and can handle PP responsibilities.

3. Anaheim Ducks: Anton Silayev, D

Pat Verbeek came from a Tampa organization that had solid ties to Russia.

4. Columbus Blue Jackets: Sam Dickinson, D

There’s ties to the London organization by way of AGM Basil McRae and director of player development Rick Nash, where the Jackets would know the player best.

5. Montreal Canadiens: Cayden Lindstrom, C

There’s no longer a need for defencemen and this power forward is exactly what the Canadiens are missing in their pipeline.

6. Utah: Tij Iginla, C

Between his performance in the second half and the U18s, Iginla’s rise up the rankings ends up landing him on the newest team.

7. Ottawa Senators: Zayne Parekh, D

There are a number of high-end defencemen in this class, but none of them can create offence the way Parekh can.

8. Seattle Kraken: Ivan Demidov, RW

There is risk with this pick in the process of getting him to North America, but he remains the second-most talented forward in this draft.

9. Calgary Flames: Carter Yakemchuk, D

The Flames have had the chance to see him up close and personal for the past two seasons he’s played with the WHL’s Hitmen. Nobody knows him better.

Another multi-faceted defenceman who leans offence. He can take the puck end-to-end, he can manipulate defenders and he can create offence without being a defensive liability.

11. Buffalo Sabres: Berkly Catton, C

This is going to look a lot like last year’s first rounder, Zach Benson, in that he’s a player from the Western League who fell despite putting up huge numbers.

12. Philadelphia Flyers: Konsta Helenius, C

Always around the puck, handles it with confidence, and will do what it takes to win it back. He’s proven he belongs after two years in Finland’s Liiga.

13. Minnesota Wild: Cole Eiserman, LW

The most pure goal-scorer in this group. He now owns the USNTDP record for most goals in a career, having surpassed Cole Caufield.

14. San Jose Sharks (via Pittsburgh): Michael Hage, C

A skilled player who moves around the ice well, with the added bonus of having a solid frame.

15. Detroit Red Wings: Beckett Sennecke, RW

Eludes defenders one-on-one with speed to the outside, cuts to the off-side well, and has quick hands to excel in a small-area game.

16.. St. Louis Blues: Jett Luchanko, C

Similar to Robert Thomas in his draft year, Luchanko has made a steady rise through the rankings because of his elite skating ability, hockey sense, and tireless work ethic.

‘Macklin in Teal’: Hockey fans react to Sharks winning 2024 NHL Draft Lottery

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 17:38

It was an anti-climatic NHL Draft Lottery for everyone except fans of the San Jose Sharks.

For the first time since 2010, no teams moved up in Tuesday’s lottery, much to the delight of the Sharks.

San Jose finished with a league-worst record of 19-54-9 and will now pick No. 1 overall on June 28 at the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas.

Barring a major surprise, the player the Sharks are expected to pick is Boston University forward Macklin Celebrini. It’s the first time in franchise history that San Jose will be selecting first overall.

It seems to be a perfect fit for Celebrini, as he has some major connections to the area. The 17-year-old Canadian grew up playing for the San Jose Junior Sharks, and his father, Rick, works for the nearby Golden State Warriors as the vice president of player health and performance.

“If I’m fortunate enough to get drafted there, I’d be very lucky,” Celebrini said to Sportsnet’s Sam Cosentino after the Sharks won the lottery.

While fans of the other teams with a chance to win the lottery were left disappointed, Sharks fans took to social media to share their excitement. Here are some of the best reactions.

NBA fines Nuggets’ Jamal Murray $100K for throwing heat pad on court

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 17:35

DENVER — Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was fined $100,000 by the NBA but avoided a suspension for “throwing multiple objects in the direction of a game official during live play,” the league announced Tuesday.

Murray tossed a towel and a heat pack onto the court late in the second quarter of Denver’s 108-80 loss to Minnesota that gave the Timberwolves a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series that shifts to Minneapolis this weekend.

The Nuggets were frustrated by the officiating as they fell behind by 28 points shortly before halftime.

The heat pack toss garnered the most attention as TNT replays showed Murray sitting at the end of Denver’s bench and throwing it onto the court. It slid across the floor as players jockeyed in the lane just before Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns made a layup with 4:41 left in the second quarter.

Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope retrieved the heat pack and tossed it aside as the public-address announcer admonished the crowd not to throw any objects onto the court.

Officiating crew chief Marc Davis told a pool reporter after the game that the officials were unaware the object had come from the bench. Otherwise, “we could have reviewed it under the hostile act trigger. The penalty would have been a technical foul.”

“We tried to impress upon (the officials) that there’s probably not many fans in the building that have a heat pack. So, it probably had to come from the bench,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said after the game.

Finch also said Murray’s actions were “inexcusable and dangerous.”

Murray left the arena without speaking to reporters and Nuggets coach Michael Malone demurred when asked about it after the game, saying he wasn’t aware that his point guard had been the culprit.

The Nuggets were off Tuesday. Their next availability is after Wednesday’s practice.

Several seconds before he threw the heat pack onto the court, Murray was observed tossing a towel in Davis’ direction. The towel landed at Davis’ heels and somebody sitting on the sideline got up and quickly removed the towel. Davis never noticed.

Murray, bothered by a strained left calf and the Timberwolves’ tenacious defense, shot 3 of 18 in Game 2, finishing with eight points. That poor performance came on the heels of his scoreless first half in Game 1, which was the first time he’s done that in either half of 59 career playoff games.

Max Comtois slots into Hurricanes lineup for Evgeny Kuznetsov in Game 2 vs. Rangers

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 17:05

After dropping Game 1 of their second-round series to the New York Rangers, the Carolina Hurricanes are juggling their lineup for Game 2.

Forward Max Comtois took to the ice for warmups, while forward Evegeny Kuznetsov was not on the ice, and was listed as out on the NHL roster report.

There was no injury designation placed on Kuznetsov, so he is currently considered out (undisclosed) for the game.

Comtois skated in just one game with the Hurricanes this season picking up an assist after signing with the team as a two-way free agent in March.

Kuznetsov was acquired by the Hurricanes from the Washington Capitals for a third-round at the trade deadline.

He scored eight goals and 24 points in 63 games between the two teams this season.

The 31-year-old also added two goals and two assists in Carolina’s five-game series win over the New York Islanders in the first round.

Timberwolves’ Gobert wins Defensive Player of the Year, Wembanyama second

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 16:46

Rudy Gobert made some history. Victor Wembanyama nearly did.

Gobert, the Minnesota centre, was announced Tuesday as the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year for a record-tying fourth time — joining Basketball Hall of Fame inductees Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace.

It was the fifth time in the last 11 seasons that a French centre won defensive player of the year — and it sure seems like Wembanyama will add to that country’s total before long. The San Antonio rookie centre, announced Monday as the league’s Rookie of the Year, was second in the voting and fell one spot short of being the first player to win the DPOY trophy in Year 1 of his NBA career.

Viva la France, indeed. Joakim Noah became the first Frenchman to win DPOY when he was the overwhelming choice in 2014, and Gobert now has the trophies for 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024.

“It’s great teamwork,” Gobert, the best defender on a Timberwolves team that had the best defence in the NBA this season, said on TNT during the award’s announcement. “We love to get individual awards and all these things, and it’s great but you can’t do it alone.”

It’s the ninth time in Gobert’s 11 seasons that he has been seventh or better in the DPOY voting. He was second in 2017, third in 2020 and 2022, fifth in 2015 and seventh in 2016 — and picked up this trophy one day after missing a playoff game for the birth of his son, Romeo.

“A lot of blessings,” Gobert said. “Just really grateful.”

Miami centre Bam Adebayo was third, his best-ever finish in the voting. He was fourth in 2021 and 2022, along with fifth in 2020 and 2023.

Adebayo — an Olympic gold medalist from 2021 and part of the team that USA Basketball has picked to play in the Paris Games this summer — is the only player to have been in the top five of the DPOY balloting in each of the last five years. He’s gotten at least one first-place vote in all five of those seasons, the only player in the NBA who can say that.

Gobert was second in rebounds per game and sixth in blocked shots per game — a category where Wembanyama led the league. The Timberwolves led the NBA this season in fewest points allowed per game. They also held opponents to the lowest field-goal percentage.

“This year, training camp, we came Day 1 and said we wanted to be a top defence in this league,” Gobert said. “Every guy has bought in. Everyone has put in the work every single day, and now we’re here with one goal in mind, to try to get this championship.”

Gobert’s win adds to an awards haul this year for the Timberwolves, who are having their best season in 20 years. Minnesota hadn’t won a playoff series since 2004 before knocking off Phoenix in Round 1, and now has a 2-0 lead — both wins on the road — over defending NBA champion Denver in the Western Conference semifinals.

“Great things take time,” Gobert said. “You guys all know winning is not something that happens overnight. You need to overcome adversity, you need to go through some ups and downs as a group.”

Other major Timberwolves award finishes this spring saw Naz Reid winning Sixth Man of the Year,Mike Conley winning the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year award, Chris Finch finishing third in the Coach of the Year voting (won by Oklahoma City’s Mark Daigneault ), Tim Connelly placing third in the Executive of the Year race (won by Boston’s Brad Stevens ) and Anthony Edwards finishing eighth in the Clutch Player of the Year balloting (won by Golden State’s Stephen Curry ).

The winner of the NBA’s top individual award will be announced Wednesday.

Three international players — Denver’s Nikola Jokic, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dallas’ Luka Doncic — are the finalists for MVP. Jokic is seeking what would be his third MVP award in the last four seasons, while Gilgeous-Alexander and Doncic are aiming to win the trophy for the first time.

Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, last season’s MVP, was not eligible this year because of the league’s new policy requiring players to appear in a certain number of games before being considered for most awards.

Other NBA honours yet to be announced are the All-Defensive, All-Rookie and All-NBA teams — which won’t be revealed before next week — and the Social Justice Award winner, which will be announced Thursday.

Planking gives Copeland the edge for wrestling comeback after decade-long retirement

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 15:48

Adam Copeland knows what it’s like to have to recover from severe injuries or operations.

As one of the most accomplished professional wrestlers of the past 20 years, the product of Orangeville, Ont., billed from Toronto, has had a laundry list of aches and pains for years. But when Copeland, formerly known as Edge, was forced to retire because of cervical spinal stenosis in 2011, he slowly got out of shape.

“I was doing the occasional acting gig and I was enjoying life but one night I carried the girls upstairs who at that stage were a combined weight of maybe 60 pounds, all told, maybe 70,” said Copeland in a phone interview on Monday. “I got to the top of stairs, and I was like, ‘whoa, I’m really tired, I’m way too tired for what I did.’

“I got the kick in the butt to get back in shape, in the proper shape, at least for where I want to be and for wanting to be around these girls for a long time because I’m an older dad.”

Planking became the foundation of Copeland’s workout routine, putting a badly needed focus on his core and back. When his longtime friend, tag-team partner, and archrival Jay Reso — known in the ring as Christian Cage — saw the results, he also became a believer in the power of planks.

But with their litany of injuries, doing standard planks on carpets or yoga mats just wasn’t realistic for either Copeland or Reso.

“We’re both nearing 50, we’ve both had multiple injuries,” said Copeland. “There’s got to be a way to make this easier on our joints so that we can still do the planking, still get all the benefits, stronger core which in turn has a stronger lower back, which in turn is less stress on your knees, etc, etc.”

The former tag-team partners started coming up with design ideas, tweaking their ideas, and creating a purpose-built platform called Pure Plank that includes non-slip handles, a soft rubber pad, a digital timer, and a smartphone holder to make planking as easy as possible, especially for people who are recovering from injury or surgery.

“More than anything, I’m at the stage in life where I’m not looking to some kind of cash grab or anything, it was really like, ‘hey, this might be able to help,” said Copeland. “Because if it can help me then maybe it can help some other folks too.”

Planking worked for both Copeland and Reso as they were both eventually medically cleared to compete after lengthy stretches away from wrestling. Both are now in All Elite Wrestling, a promotion based out of Jacksonville, Fla., where they are now at odds with each other, feuding over the TNT championship.

Most recently, Copeland won the belt in an “I Quit” match on March 20 at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum on Dynamite, AEW’s flagship show.

“I was very, very happy with that one,” said Copeland.

Blue Jays provide injury updates on Garcia, Votto, more

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 15:43

Before starting a series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, the Toronto Blue Jays delivered injury updates on several players.

The bullpen, in particular, has been hit hard in recent weeks.

Here is a rundown.

• Reliever Yimi Garcia (back), Toronto’s best arm out of the bullpen this season, planned to test things out in the bullpen on Tuesday before the game to see if he’ll be available during this two-game series. If he’s not good to go, the club will consider a stint on the IL. Garcia has been listed as day-to-day since Friday.

• Right-hander Bowden Francis (forearm) threw a bullpen session that went well on Monday in Toronto. A two-inning side session will follow on Thursday. The Blue Jays envision him returning to a multi-inning relief role when he returns.

• Right-hander Chad Green (shoulder) has been playing long toss in Toronto. The team is hopeful he’ll throw off a mound later this week.

• Top pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (ulnar nerve) has been throwing off flat ground at the team’s complex in Dunedin, Fla. It is expected to be a couple more weeks before he’s ready to throw off a mound.

• First baseman/DH Joey Votto (ankle) is continuing to ramp up baseball activity in Dunedin. He was hurt in his first spring training game for Toronto after signing a minor-league deal. Next step for the Canadian is a live game.

Watch Tuesday’s Blue Jays-Phillies game on Sportsnet ONE or Sportsnet+ at 6:40 p.m. ET / 3:40 p.m. PT.

Five Blue Jays storylines as one-quarter mark approaches

NBA says late offensive foul on Pacers’ Turner was right call

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 15:33

If you were blaming a controversial late offensive foul called on Myles Turner for the Indiana Pacers‘ Game 1 loss to the New York Knicks on Monday, the NBA is telling you to point fingers elsewhere.

In the last two-minute report released by the league Tuesday, the NBA determined that the foul called with 12.7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter with the Pacers down one was the correct call.

“Turner turns into (Donte) DiVincenzo’s (NYK) path and does not give him time and distance to change direction prior to the illegal contact,” the report said.

The Pacers and head coach Rick Carlisle used their coach’s challenge on the call, but it was upheld after review.

“I don’t wanna talk about the officiating,” Carlisle told reporters after the game. “We’re not expecting to get calls in here. It would be nice if they laid off that one, but they didn’t. So that’s just the way it goes.

“We challenged it, they reviewed it, they’ve got a bunch of people in New Jersey that agreed with them so that’s just the way it goes. We’ve gotta learn from that too.”

As a result of the foul, the Knicks regained possession of the ball and Jalen Brunson nailed three free throws to take New York’s lead from 118-117 to the eventual final, 121-117.

Turner also sounded off after the game, saying, “In my experience in this league, I think it’s best when players decide the outcome of the game.”

The NBA did say that officials got four calls wrong in the final two minutes, including a non-call on a Divencenzo screen with 53.6 seconds remaining in the quarter and a kicked ball called on Aaron Nesmith less than two seconds later.

Game 2 stays in New York as the sixth-seeded Pacers try to even the series with the second-seeded Knicks on Wednesday.

Borussia Dortmund beats Paris Saint-Germain, advances to Champions League final

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 15:21

PARIS (AP) — Central defender Mats Hummels headed Borussia Dortmund into the Champions League final as the German team won 1-0 at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Moments after Warren Zaïre-Emery missed an open goal for PSG, Hummels rose unchallenged to head in Julian Brandt’s corner from the left in the 50th minute.

Dortmund won both legs 1-0 and largely contained PSG striker Kylian Mbappé, who is leaving at the end of the season.

PSG had long spells of possession in the last 10 minutes.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel palmed away Mbappé’s low shot, then pushed Mbappé’s deflected close-range effort onto the crossbar with a superb one-handed save. The Parc des Princes crowd groaned when midfielder Vitinha’s thumping 25-meter strike rattled the woodwork.

“I don’t know what to say,” a distraught-looking Vitinha said.

Coach Edin Terzić’s team will play either record 14-time champion Real Madrid or six-time winner Bayern Munich on June 1 at Wembley Stadium. Madrid and Bayern drew 2-2 in the first leg and play on Wednesday.

Dortmund is on course for its second Champions League trophy after winning in 1997 and a third European trophy, having won the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1966. Dortmund also reached the Champions League final in 2013, losing to Bayern.

For PSG, it’s another season ending without raising the trophy its cash-rich Qatari owners so crave despite spending huge amounts on star players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Neymar, Lionel Messi and Mbappé. PSG lost its only Champions League final in 2020 to Bayern.

“Efficiency, that’s what we were missing,” PSG captain Marquinhos said. “We should have defended better. They scored from a corner and a counter-attack (in the first leg). We created more chances but they won both games.”

As Dortmund’s players rushed over to celebrate with this visiting fans, Mbappé looked dejected as he trudged for the last time in a Champions League game wearing a PSG jersey. He is widely expected to join Madrid.

Moments before Dortmund’s goal, Zaïre-Emery somehow hit the post from two meters out after Gonçalo Ramos flicked on Mbappé’s cross from the left.

On Hummels’ goal, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma again did not move off his line to claim the ball, having not done so when Barcelona scored on a corner from the left in the first leg of the quarterfinals.

Even though PSG was chasing the game, coach Luis Enrique’s players seemed nervous, playing cautiously and defending too deeply in the first half, allowing Dortmund to settle into a comfortable rhythm.

Mbappé was ineffective in attack when PSG lost the first leg and again struggled initially to get into the game.

Despite their speed, Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé struggled to find space behind a well-organized Dortmund defense, with midfielder Emre Can offering good protection.

It took 30 minutes before Mbappé and Zaïre-Emery freed Dembélé on the right of the penalty area, but he failed to hit the target.

Speedy left winger Karim Adeyemi did so for Dortmund five minutes later when a rapid counter-attack exposed PSG’s defense, but Donnarumma rescued PSG with a fine low save.

Hummel’s goal at least woke up PSG’s attack, but Ramos missed the target when well-placed either side of a stinging shot from left back Nuno Mendes hitting the left post.

Dembélé then cut inside Hummels, who was perhaps unfortunate not to concede a penalty midway through the second half. Instead, referee Daniele Orsato awarded a free kick right on the edge of the area.

PSG may point to hitting the post and refereeing decisions, but in reality again fell short despite boasting one of the world’s best players in Mbappé.

Brewers’ Tyler Black overwhelmed by support from Canadian fans after MLB debut

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 14:46

It was like something out of a storybook. Tyler Black was at the plate in his big league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers as his father, former Canadian sports broadcaster Rod Black, and his mother Nancy Black, were being interviewed in the stands.

The younger Black connected on his second hit of the game, and of his career, and his father’s instincts took over, immediately calling the play.

“There’s a base hit to right field for my boy, Tyler Black,” said Rod Black. “There you go, oh there you go, 2 for 2. Happy birthday, Nancy.”

The moment has gone viral, with baseball fans, or fans of Rod Black, loving the moment. Tyler Black was actually one of the last people to see it.

“I didn’t see it till after the game. Sophia (Minnaert), one of our reporters mentioned it to me in the locker room,” said the younger Black. “Right away I got a smile on my face. It’s crazy.

“I wouldn’t want anyone else on the mic other than my dad for that one.”

Tyler Black went 2 for 4 in the Brewers’ 8-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on April 30 with a double and a run scored with his parents in the crowd at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

Although Tyler Black’s not big on social media — “it’s been so hectic” — he said that family, friends, former teammates and coaches have reached out to him to talk about the moment with his dad and wish him luck on his MLB career.

“I’ve heard from a lot of my friends when I first got the call (up to the Brewers), and then after the game,” he said. “A lot of people helped me get to this point and that’s truly what matters to me at the end of the day.

“Hearing from those people because those are the people that kind of got me to where I’m at.”

Over the past week, a who’s who of Canadian baseball has reached out to him, including Toronto Mets president Ryan McBride, former Blue Jays outfielder Rob Butler, who also coached Black, and World Series hero Joe Carter.

“It’s been really cool to put in the work to get here, but to put a smile on other people’s faces and show people they can do it from Canada has been really cool as well,” said Black.

The 23-year-old first baseman is hitting .211 through six games with Milwaukee heading into Tuesday night’s game in Kansas City against the Royals. He has a .250 on-base percentage with a run and one stolen base.

“I’m trying to help this team win as many games as I can,” said Black, who started the season with triple-A Nashville. “It’s very different up here. Really, the only thing that matters is winning, and I love that.

“So just taking it day by day and trying to help this team win as many games as they can.”

Report: Giants claim Canadian QB Nathan Rourke off waivers

Tue, 05/07/2024 - 14:40

Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke has found a new home in the NFL.

After being released and waived by the New England Patriots on Monday, Rourke was claimed by the New York Giants on Tuesday, according to a report by NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.

The 25-year-old from Victoria signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of the 2023 season before being claimed off waivers by the Patriots in December and then subsequently re-signed with the team in the off-season.

Rourke spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons in the CFL with the B.C. Lions, racking up 4,035 yards and 28 touchdowns in 22 games and 11 starts. He was named the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian in 2022.

The Patriots recently signed veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett in free agency and drafted signal callers Drake Maye and Joe Milton in the 2024 NFL Draft, leading to Rourke’s release.

The Giants have a Canadian connection in their front office. Chris Rossetti, the director of pro scouting, is a former Toronto Argonauts executive and quarterback at Guelph University.

New York has a crowded quarterback room, with Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito already in the organization. While there is no surefire franchise quarterback in that group, Rourke will have to beat out at least one quarterback with NFL experience to stick.

The Giants finished third in the NFC East last season with a 6-11 record.
