Next Man Up: Canucks keeping cool with strong goaltender performances

SportsNets - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 19:09

VANCOUVER — When Elias Lindholm scored just over a minute into overtime in Game 4 to seal the victory for the Vancouver Canucks, there were emphatic celebrations at both ends of the ice.

Arturs Silovs, the Canucks’ third-string goalie playing his first career playoff game, was swarmed with just as many teammates as Lindholm on Sunday afternoon in Nashville — and for good reason. He made 27 of 30 stops to help the Canucks steal a win in a game that, perhaps, they didn’t deserve, but the shot count only tells part of the story.

If Silovs was nervous about being thrust into arguably the most high-stakes game of his National Hockey League career as backup-turned-starter Casey DeSmith recovers from a minor injury, you wouldn’t have known. He looked exactly like the calm, cool and collected netminder who helped Latvia to their first-ever medal at the 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship. The 23-year-old weathered the second- and third-period storm when the Nashville Predators out-shot the Canucks 10-6 and 11-6.

Put into an unbelievable situation, Silovs came out unscathed. But if you ask his coach and teammates, none of this should come as a surprise.

“He’s a gamer,” Canucks forward Conor Garland said. “He’s calm, you couldn’t even tell it was his first game. Really excited for him, played well. I saw him this summer, he killed us at Worlds. I saw how talented he was, how agile. He’s an athlete — you see it when he’s in net, he just competes. He’s fun to play for.”

Silovs was informed he would be starting the pivotal Game 4 on Saturday when the Canucks decided to be extra cautious dealing with a minor injury to DeSmith. In the regular season, Silovs started just four games for the Canucks and had three wins under his belt.

No matter, though, for the young Latvian goaltender, who told head coach Rick Tocchet that he was “ready to shine” in Game 4.

“He’s a quiet kid, but he’s got some swagger to him,” Tocchet said. “He’s just ready.”

It’s a strange situation for the Canucks between the pipes, having started three different goaltenders across four games in the series. They’ve all found success, though, and the bench boss attributes that to a “next man up” mentality the team has shown throughout the season.

“It’s bizarre, but, you know, when we were going with Arty, and the guys heard it… I don’t see anybody walking away going ‘Oh my god, what’s going on around here?’” Tocchet said of the Canucks’ goaltending situation. “I just think, OK. Let’s go.

“[GM Patrik Allvin’s] big thing, when I signed here, he has a big ‘next man up’ mentality. That’s one of his big mantras. He doesn’t want to hear, ‘Oh poor us’. He hates that. When we told him we were going with Arty, he was like ‘OK. Where are we going for dinner?’ When your general manager says that to your coach, it really gives you confidence.”

There was a time in the not-so-distant past when an injury to Thatcher Demko and a reliance on backup and third-string goaltenders to win games would have effectively been a death sentence for the Canucks. Tocchet, however, in one of the many ways he’s completely turned the team around this season, has instilled such a solid defensive system that they don’t need to rely on a Vezina Trophy-calibre performance from their goalie to get a win.

In fact, their game plan doesn’t really change, regardless if it’s Demko, DeSmith or Silovs between the pipes.

“It goes to show that we’re going to have success when we fall back on our system,” defenceman Tyler Myers said. “Our team defence has been good. Definitely always things to look at that we can get better at, but we’ve had great goaltending from three different guys and when you combine that with the way we’re playing within our system, good things tend to happen.”

“We’ve defended really well all year,” Garland added. “I think when we were scoring goals at such a high rate at the start of the year, maybe our defence got overlooked. And then when the goals dried up, we were still winning games, we could see how good our D was.”

The Canucks haven’t necessarily needed their goaltenders to put on extraordinary performances, but they’ve got them anyways.

“It’s a good sign of a good team when you can roll deep like that and every guy comes in and competes,” said Garland.

“They’e earned it.”

Tocchet wouldn’t confirm who would start Game 5, but after his performance on Saturday, Silovs may have also earned the opportunity to backstop the Canucks to their first playoff series victory on home ice since 2011.

Why Cirelli’s goal in Game 5 was overturned

SportsNets - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 18:43

Anthony Cirelli and the Tampa Lightning thought they had opened the scoring gates in Game 5 against the Florida Panthers when the forward found a loose puck in front of the net and slipped it past Sergei Bobrovsky.

When the goal was scored it appeared as though Cirelli was given a bit of help at the hands of former Panther Anthony Duclair, and what was supposedly legal disruption in front of the net. That notion quickly changed thanks to a challenge by Florida head coach Paul Maurice.

Upon review, the goal was overturned as there was deemed to have been goalie interference by Duclair. The league’s official ruling stated, “Video review determined Tampa Bay’s Anthony Duclair impaired Sergei Bobrovsky’s ability to play his position in the crease prior to Anthony Cirelli’s goal.”

The NHL’s decision was made in accordance with Rule 69.1 which states, in part, “Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal.”

Dave Jackson, NHL rules analyst, weighed in on the ESPN broadcast noting that he believed it was a tough call to make but that Duclair “gets (into the goalie’s crease) by himself, he’s not pushed in. He’s trying to keep himself outside the blue paint but he does put his foot in, it’s between the goalkeeper’s glove … I think this is a good challenge.”

In a series the Lightning trailed 3-1 heading into the game, a goal in the first period to put them up would’ve been a welcomed boost to gain some momentum, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Cirelli’s misfortune didn’t end there as he was involved in another Tampa Bay goal being disallowed later in the game. Facing a 2-1 deficit in the second period, Mikhail Sergachev put a shot on net that appeared to be a game-tying goal.

However, officials immediately waved it off as they deemed Cirelli to be the perpetrator of goalie interference this time around. Despite being tangled up with Panthers defenceman Niko Mikkola, Cirelli being in the crease was enough in the eyes of the officials to wave off the goal.

The decision was again upheld after a coach’s challenge and video review.

Messi to Miami: Soccer star, and a few teammates, show up for Heat-Celtics game

SportsNets - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 18:05

MIAMI (AP) — Lionel Messi took a night off to watch the Miami Heat.

The Inter Miami star and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as the world’s best player — along with teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez — arrived just before tip-off of the Heat playoff game with the Boston Celtics on Monday night.

The group — some clad in Heat attire — arrived in the players’ parking garage, then were brought in through a VIP entrance before making their way to their seats. Messi has been to the arena before for at least one other event, but never before had arranged to be at a Heat game since moving to Miami last year.

Inter Miami is 6-2-3 so far this season in Major League Soccer play, sitting in first place in the Eastern Conference and with the most points of any team in the league.

Messi had two goals and an assist in Inter Miami’s 4-1 win at New England on Saturday, and has multiple goal contributions in five straight matches — the first MLS player ever to do that. He has nine goals and seven assists in seven matches with Inter Miami this season.

Messi, who led Argentina to the World Cup title in 2022, has more than 800 goals in his career for club and country, making him one of the greatest scorers in soccer history. He scored twice in the 2022 World Cup final against France, a match that ended 3-3 with Argentina prevailing 4-2 on penalty kicks.

Could former Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft be a candidate for Sharks job?

SportsNets - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 17:00

It’s never too early to hear the music coming from the coaching carousel.

Though we’re not even through a full round of the playoffs — and as it stands on Monday only the New York Rangers have made it through to the second round — rumours for coaching openings on teams that missed the dance are already in full swing.

So far, the Seattle Kraken, San Jose Sharks, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators and St. Louis Blues are on the lookout for a new coach and a couple of well-known names have already started flying around.

Notably, a familiar face to Oilers fans has popped up following his inclusion on the coaching staff for the senior men’s national team as they head to Prague for the IIHF Hockey World Championship.

Former head coach Jay Woodcroft is apparently looking to get his feet wet once again after being let go by Edmonton earlier this season.

On Monday’s edition of 32 Thoughts, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the Sharks’ search for a new coach has brought them back to people who have connections to the organization, Woodcroft being one of them.

“San Jose does like the tie-ins to people that have been there. That’s one of the reasons they really like (general manager) Mike Grier,” Friedman explained. “They wanted someone that identifies. Strong identification with the market is important to them. …

“Jay Woodcroft is one. The former Edmonton coach is a long-time assistant in San Jose. Spent seven seasons there as an assistant coach.”

Woodcroft was brought in as an assistant in 2008 under former head coach Todd McLellan after spending the first three years of his coaching career as a video coordinator with the Detroit Red Wings. When the Sharks parted ways with McLellan in 2015, Woodcroft was also part of the dismissal. He ended up with the Oilers, where he spent the next eight years of his career in various roles.

Woodcroft made an appearance on the Real Kyper and Bourne on Monday afternoon to talk about his selection to Andre Tourigny’s Canadian coaching staff and what life has been like since his dismissal in Edmonton, particularly about how he’s put his downtime to use to better improve his future prospects behind an NHL bench.

“Got some great advice from mentors around the league… They said you’ve been doing this for 20 years straight, going 100 mph. It’s okay to take a deep breath and really spend some quality family time. That’s something I really dug into,” Woodcroft said when asked about his hiatus from coaching.

“Right around January when the calendar flipped, I was eager to flex some hockey muscles and eager to be around the game a little bit more.”

To best use that time, Woodcroft spent the winter and early spring months in Europe, helping out two unnamed coaching staffs and building up his resume and scope of inspiration in time for a potential new job back in the NHL or “wherever and whenever that might be.”

For now, his longtime experience will be put to use on the national stage as Canada prepares to take on the world at the World Championship in May. He joins another head coach dismissed this past season in Dean Evason, formerly the bench boss for the Minnesota Wild.

The lack of job security when it comes to coaching in the NHL isn’t something that bothers Woodcroft, however. The 47-year-old has been in the league for a long time, has seen just how quickly jobs come and go and says he is more than willing to incur that risk once again.

“What a crazy business we’re in. Was reading something, 16 to 17 coaches replaced in the last year or so,” Woodcroft said, highlighting how short leashes can be throughout the league. “We’re all big boys, we know what we sign up for. It’s just part of what we do.

“Certainly for me, I’m anxious to have good conversations with people that look to talk to me, but right now my focus and concentration is on helping our country win a gold medal in Prague.”

Though nothing is close to being set in stone, things are starting to move on the NHL’s coaching carousel, and as former bench bosses hone their resumes and prepare for interviews, the work Woodcroft has put in since his departure from the Oilers could put him firmly in line for some job opportunities this summer.
