NEW YORK — The average time of a nine-inning game is 2 hours, 36 minutes through the first full month of the major league season, down 1 minute from 2023 in the second year of the pitch clock.

Over objections from the players’ association, MLB lowered the timer to 18 seconds from 20 with runners on base while keeping it at 15 seconds with no runners.

Last year, the average increased gradually through the season, from 2:37 through April to 2:38 in May, 2:39 in June, 2:41 in July and August to 2:44 in September.

The season average of 2:40 was down 24 minutes from 2022 and the lowest since 1985.

Union head Tony Clark claims the pitch clock may have contributed to pitcher injuries, calling the timer “an unprecedented threat to our game and its most valuable asset — the players.”

MLB has disputed that, saying Clark “ignores the empirical evidence and much more significant long-term trend, over multiple decades, of velocity and spin increases that are highly correlated with arm injuries.”

Games on April 22 averaged 2:22, the fastest on any day with at least two nine-inning games since 1986 and down 7 minutes from the fastest day last year.

Time needed for pitching changes has dropped 10 seconds to 2:36 following a change this year lowering the clock to 2 minutes from 2:15 after the pitcher crosses the warning track.

Clock violations dropped to 0.32 per game from 0.70 through the same number of games last year, and games with no violations increased to 74% from 52%. The violation average declined from 0.38 in the season’s first week to 0.35 in the second, 0.33 in the third, 0.31 in the fourth, 0.27 in the fifth and 0.26 in the sixth.

Colorado, Kansas City, Oakland and Toronto have just one violation each.

The major league batting average of .239 is down from .249 through the first month last season following the implementation of limits on defensive shifts. The average finished at .248 last year.

Golden Boy Promotions said in a statement Thursday that it stands by Ryan Garcia after a report that he had tested positive for a banned substance before his dominant victory over Devin Haney last month in New York.

“Ryan has put out multiple statements denying knowingly using any banned substances — and we believe him,” the statement read. “We are working with his team to determine how this finding came to be and will address this further once we conclude that process.”

ESPN reported that Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance Ostarine the day before and the day of the April 20 fight, citing a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association letter. Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator, and its use can stimulate muscle growth. It is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The results of the test weren’t known until later.

VADA did not immediately respond Thursday to a request for comment. The organization oversees testing for performance-enhancing drugs in boxing and mixed-martial arts. Athletes who use VADA agree to unannounced tests within eight weeks of a scheduled fight. The World Anti-Doping Agency conducts the tests on behalf of VADA.

Garcia defeated Haney, a former amateur rival, by majority decision in New York. Garcia knocked Haney down three times and handed the WBC super lightweight champion his first loss but did not win the title because he was over the weight limit.

Garcia emphatically denied that he broke the rules in a video posted on X.

“I’ve never taken a steroid in my life,” Garcia said. “I don’t even know where to get steroids. At the end of the day, I barely take supplements.”

Garcia’s victory could be overturned if the positive drug test is confirmed.

“We learned about this situation not too long ago and it’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty and breaking positive not once, but twice,” Haney posted on his Instagram story. “I’ve always been an advocate for clean fighting and this is an example of such. Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet he still thinks this is a joke.”

RALEIGH, N.C. — Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said Thursday he feels “really good” that he will reach a new contract with the team, mirroring optimism from president and general manager Don Waddell a day earlier.

Brind’Amour – considered by many the face of the franchise with his long-running ties here that include being the captain of the 2006 Stanley Cup winner – is in the final year of a deal reached in 2021. His status has become a talking point around the league with multiple jobs open as Carolina prepares to face the New York Rangers in the second round of the NHL playoffs.

“Yeah, I had a great conversation yesterday with Don, and then again this morning,” Brind’Amour said. “I feel really good that we’ll figure it out quickly. Yeah, I’m not concerned.”

That came a day after Waddell said he was “very confident” that the two sides would reach a deal.

“We talk daily about it,” Waddell said in a Zoom call with reporters following the team’s first-round series win against the New York Islanders. “I feel very confident as I’ve said before that this deal will get done. Rod wants to be a Hurricane for life.”

In an interview earlier this week with The News and Observer of Raleigh, team owner Tom Dundon said he thought the two sides were “just getting through the last little stuff.”

Brind’Amour, 53, arrived in Raleigh in a January 2000 trade from Philadelphia and played here until his retirement in 2010. He then spent seven seasons as an assistant coach before taking over as a first-time head coach in 2018.

At the time, he proclaimed “I bleed Hurricane red” — then went about turning Carolina into a perennial winner.

Brind’Amour is 6-for-6 in getting the Hurricanes to the playoffs after the franchise went nine years without a postseason berth. Carolina has twice reached the Eastern Conference Final in the past five seasons and ranked second in the NHL over the last four combined regular seasons in points and points percentage behind only Boston.

Tuesday’s Game 5 win to close out the Islanders made Carolina the first team to win at least one series in six straight postseasons since Detroit did it from 1995-2000. Carolina entered the playoffs as the favorite to win the Stanley Cup according to Bet MGM Sportsbook,

Carolina center Sebastian Aho shrugged off any idea Thursday of Brind’Amour’s status being a distraction.

“No, Roddy’s coaching us this year,” Aho said. “I’m sure they’ll figure it out.”

Also on Thursday, the Hurricanes addressed at least one organizational need by reaching a three-year affiliation agreement with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. Chicago had been Carolina’s AHL affiliate from 2020-23 before opting to become an independent after that deal ended.

The new agreement will give the Hurricanes oversight of the Wolves’ hockey operations decisions along with a place to develop rising prospects. The Wolves won the Calder Cup in 2022 with a team featuring current Hurricanes players such as defenseman Jalen Chatfield, forwards Stefan Noesen and Jack Drury, and goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov.

Since parting ways with Chicago, Carolina had parked prospects with teams in the AHL and East Coast Hockey League.

LOS ANGELES — Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanour domestic battery on Wednesday.

According to court records, four other misdemeanour charges against Urías were dropped. Urias had also been facing one count of spousal battery, one count of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one count of false imprisonment and one count of assault. All the charges stemmed from his arrest in September on suspicion of domestic violence.

Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office spokesman Ivor Pine said Urías was placed on 36 months of summary probation and ordered to complete 30 days of community labour. Urías must also complete a 52-week domestic violence counselling course, pay a domestic violence fund fee, not possess any weapons, not use any force or violence, pay restitution to the victim and abide by a protective order.

Blair Berk, an attorney for Urias, didn’t immediately respond to a call and email seeking comment on the case Thursday.

Urías was placed on administrative leave indefinitely by Major League Baseball after his arrest outside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles where he attended a Major League Soccer game on Sept. 3. Police were first alerted by a citizen who reported a man and woman were in a physical altercation. Urías was arrested by Department of Public Safety officers on felony suspicion of domestic violence.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office decided in January not to file felony charges and turned the case over to the city attorney to consider misdemeanors.

According to a charge evaluation worksheet from the district attorney’s office, Urías was arguing with his wife when he “pushed (her) against a fence and pulled her by the hair or shoulders.” However, the document said, “Neither the Victim’s injuries nor the Defendant’s criminal history justify a felony filing.”

Urías became a free agent after the World Series. He spent the first eight years of his career with the Dodgers.

The leave was imposed under baseball’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy with the players’ association and can be the first step toward a suspension. Players are paid but cannot play while on leave. MLB’s investigation is ongoing.

Even without a criminal conviction, MLB could suspend the 27-year-old left-hander if it concludes he violated the policy.

Urías was also arrested in May 2019 on suspicion of domestic battery. He has been suspended 20 games by MLB, but he wasn’t prosecuted by the LA city attorney on the condition he completed a 52-week domestic violence counselling program. No player has been suspended twice under MLB’s domestic violence policy.

Igor Shesterkin has stopped 94 of the 101 shots he has faced so far this post-season and his play in net is a big reason the New York Rangers rolled through the first round and look like a Stanley Cup contender.

Says Shesterkin: “I could play better.”

“I can do less rebounds, play more confident with the puck and in the net, too,” Shesterkin added.

Up next for the Rangers are the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round.

The humbling assessment from the 2022 Vezina Trophy winner as the league’s top goaltender was no surprise to teammates who have seen him make one improbable save after another. “He can steal any game, really, (that) he wants to,” captain Jacob Trouba said. “We know what we have back there. We don’t want to rely on him. But when we do have breakdowns and mistakes, I think we have complete trust that he’s there to have our backs.”

Minutes later, forward Vincent Trocheck, who was the best skater on the ice in the series, echoed a similar sentiment: “Whenever we do have a little bit of a letdown, he’s back there to save our butts.”

Even when Shesterkin himself had a letdown, giving up a weird goal in Game 3 on hockey’s equivalent of a diving curve ball, he was perfect the rest of the way.

“Not surprised,” Trocheck said. “We need him to be the backbone of this team. He’s been doing it for years now.”

Coach Peter Laviolette sees a goalie who “seems to be tracking everything really well,” seeing the whole rink from side to side and having good awareness of what’s going on around him beyond the puck. Backup Jonathan Quick, the 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP in his first of two Cup runs with Los Angeles, appreciates the work Shesterkin has put in to be in the right position so frequently.

“Everyone sees the saves and how great he is athletically and stuff like that,” Quick said. “But I think the part that stands out to me always is his ability to read plays, read what’s going to happen.”

Trouba often finds himself looking up at arena video screens to watch replays of saves by Shesterkin that make him go, “Wow, he got over there.”

Fellow defenseman K’Andre Miller is still surprised by the 28-year-old Russian’s spectacular stops and consistent play.

“He’s done a great job of just proving why he’s been the best at what he does,” Miller said. “He makes himself better every day, but he also pushes us to be the best we can.”

Asked how good the Rangers can be and how deep they could go, Shesterkin said only, “We will see.” The real answer is almost certainly how far he can carry them.
