Playoff Takeaways: Heiskanen steps up as Stars even up series with Avalanche

This time they managed to hang on.

Barely.

Despite a late third-period scare that saw the Colorado Avalanche get within a goal of erasing a four-goal deficit, the Dallas Stars preserved a 5-3 win Thursday night to tie the series 1-1.

They won the special teams battle, their goaltender was better, and the game’s star defenceman was someone other than Cale Makar.

Two nights after seeing a 3-0 first-period lead turn into a 4-3 overtime loss blamed largely on first-round fatigue, the Stars came up with an impressive response that saw them lead 4-0 heading into the third.

Some takeaways from a 5-3 Stars win that was very much in question until Esa Lindell found the empty net from 199 feet away:

STUD D-MAN STEPS UP

Often lauded as one of the top five blue liners in the game today, Stars defenceman Miro Heiskanen scored a pair of power-play goals as part of his club’s stellar start.

The first saw him convert a brilliant cross from Roope Hintz he one-timed into the net.

The second was a seeing-eye shot from the point that caught a piece of Andrew Cogliano’s stick on the way in.

The 24-year-old Finn, who finished seventh in Norris Trophy voting last season, has quietly gone about sitting fifth all-time in points per game amongst NHL defencemen under age 25 at .71 PPG.

The four ahead of him: Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Makar and Sandis Ozolinsh.

BIG NIGHT FOR TOP CENTRE

If you had to wager on one man picking up four points in the game, you’d likely go with Nathan MacKinnon.

However, his six-game point streak actually came to an end, as did Mikko Rantanen’s, thanks to a steady diet of Chris Tanev all night.

It was, in fact, Roope Hintz who finally broke out offensively with a goal and three assists.

The Stars’ top-line centre had just a single goal to show for his previous eight games, demonstrating just how much depth Dallas counted on to get by the defending champion Golden Knights in Round 1.

Tyler Seguin also broke through with the eventual game-winner, which he scored shorthanded late in the second period to record his first goal of the postseason

“It added to the excitement on the bench,” said Jason Robertson.

“Those guys have been trying all playoffs to get one. Now I’m sure the momentum and confidence are going to keep going.”

HEAD SHOT CONTROVERSY?

A big moment of the game came when Jamie Benn caught Devon Toews with his head down behind the net, leveling the Avalanche defenceman with a high, heavy hit that prompted the defenceman to leave the game briefly.

Originally whistled for a major penalty on the hit, a video review by the league reversed the call, suggesting the initial contact wasn’t to the head.

Avs coach Jared Bednar disagreed.

“Toews is fine. It’s a physical game, and it’s a physical player. I don’t know what to say. Does he catch a piece of his shoulder? Yes, I guess you could argue that, but the target is high and it’s at his head, and he makes contact with his head. I have seen many times guys get called for the headshot penalties with a lot less than that, but I guess they didn’t think so. This time of the year you have to play through some of that stuff. But, for me, it just makes me wonder, again, what the rule is. We will never probably figure it out, but it is what it is. You have to play through it, and I am glad he is OK. It’s a physical game this time of year, but I can’t understand how it’s not a penalty even if it isn’t a five (minute major).”

WHERE IT GOT AWAY

Bednar did well to explain how a 1-0 game got away from his club in the second period when the Stars scored three times on 15 shots and took over the game with a second power-play goal and a shorty.

“The second period, for me, is where it fell apart. Just not sharp. You can just go to the penalties alone, and it shows you’re not sharp. We had two too many men on the ice penalties and you get two over-the-glass penalties unforced, so it’s eight minutes of power play you are giving a really good power play team, and the rest of our execution and frustration keeps building from there. I did not like the second period at all. It just lasted too long. Too long of them dominating, too many odd-man rushes and gains. Just not disciplined and too stubborn with the puck, and it lacked the work needed to have success. Then, we turned around in the third and go to work, and that’s what happens.”

NHL RECORD IN SIGHT

With four minutes left, Valeri Nichushkin silenced the American Airlines Center by netting his ninth goal of this year’s playoffs.

Not only did it put the result in question, and tie him with Zach Hyman for the post-season lead, but it extended his playoff-opening goal streak to seven games, tying Pat LaFontaine (1992) for the longest playoff-opening goal streak in NHL lore.

The seven-game streak also ties him with Joe Sakic (1996) and

Claude Lemieux (1997) for the longest overall goal streak in franchise history.

Game 3 goes Saturday in Denver.

Jared Bednar isn’t sure he understands some NHL rules.

The Colorado Avalanche coach can’t figure out why Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn wasn’t sent to the penalty box after his high, hard hit on Avs defenceman Devon Toews early in the second period of Game 2 of their second-round series on Thursday.

Benn’s shoulder appeared initially to made contact with Toews in the upper shoulder or neck area, perhaps just below the head at first on the hit behind the Colorado net. Toews’ head snapped back and hit Dallas forward Wyatt Johnston in the chest.

The play originally was not called a penalty, but referees Francis Charron and Frederick L’Ecuyer then huddled and called a major penalty and said it would be reviewed.

After a quick chat with the replay centre, the major call was reversed. Bednar, whose team was trailing 2-0 at the time, made his displeasure known on the bench.

“Does he catch a piece of his shoulder? Yeah, I guess you can argue that. But the target is high. It’s at his head, it makes contact with the head,” Bednar said following Colorado’s 5-3 loss.

“I’ve seen many times guys get called for the headshot penalty with a lot less than that. But I guess they didn’t think so and this time of the year, you’ve got to play through some of that stuff. But for me, it makes me wonder again what rules I know and don’t know and will never probably figure out.

“It is what it is, you’ve got to play through it and I’m glad he’s OK. It’s a physical game this time of year. But I can’t understand how it wasn’t (at least) a penalty, even if it wasn’t a five.”

A trainer came out to attend to Toews, who exited briefly before returning to the game.

Rule 48.1 in the NHL rulebook focuses on illegal checks to the head. Part of it states: the refs must consider “whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body and the head was not picked as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward” when determining whether head contact was avoidable.

The series is now tied at 1-1.

Doncic scores 29 points as Mavericks top Thunder to even series

OKLAHOMA CITY — Luka Doncic limped around the court, often grimacing as he played through a sprained right knee and a bloodied left knee.

His shooting stroke was unaffected. He had 29 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to help the Dallas Mavericks beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 119-110 on Thursday night and even the Western Conference semifinals at one win apiece.

“I think that was one of the hardest games I’ve had to play,” Doncic said. “I’m battling out there trying to do my best to help the team win.”

The Thunder held Doncic to 19 points on 6-for-19 shooting in Game 1. He made 11 of 21 field goals in Game 2. Throughout, he had frequent conversations with the officials — enough to draw the ire of Thunder fans, who booed him and directed chants his way.

“That’s great for me,” he said. “I love it.”

P.J. Washington added 29 points and 11 rebounds and made 7 of 11 3-pointers for the Mavericks. He averaged 12.9 points in the regular season.

“I thought P.J. set the tone,” Dallas coach Jason Kidd said. “We played through him a little bit in the post and I think that sparked him. He was big for us tonight.”

Kyrie Irving added nine points and 11 assists for the No. 5-seeded Mavericks, who host Game 3 on Saturday after taking home-court advantage from the top-seeded Thunder.

Doncic expects the Thunder to be prepared.

“They have great players,” Doncic said. “They have great chemistry, great team. And it’s going to be tough. It’s going to be a fight till the end. So, just much respect to Oklahoma (City), but it’s big time we won this game.”

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 33 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, and Jalen Williams added 20 points for the Thunder, who lost for the first time in the postseason and allowed more than 100 points for the first time in their six playoff games.

The Mavericks played with desperation, just like they did in the first round when they beat the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 2 and took home court from them.

“I feel like it was a must-win game for us,” Washington said. “And those games, I feel like are where we play our best.”

Doncic made his first three shots and scored eight points in the first three minutes to help Dallas take a 13-2 lead. He scored 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting in the first quarter, but the Thunder had the play of the quarter. Oklahoma City inbounded from under the Dallas goal with 1.4 seconds left. Jaylin Williams threw it long for Chet Holmgren, who caught the ball while defended by two Mavericks in traffic, turned around and hit a long 2-point jumper to cut Dallas’ lead to 36-32.

Dallas led 68-62 at halftime. Both teams made 25 of 47 shots before the break, but Dallas made 12 3s to Oklahoma City’s six.

Oklahoma City tied it at 70 on a baseline jumper by Gilgeous-Alexander two minutes into the second half. Aaron Wiggins, who started the second half in place of Josh Giddey, scored from in close to give the Thunder a 72-71 lead, their first advantage of the game.

Dallas rallied, largely with Doncic resting. After he returned, his lob for a dunk by Derrick Jones Jr. put the Mavericks up 99-85 late in the third quarter, and they took a 99-89 lead into the fourth.

A powerful two-handed putback dunk by Williams cut Dallas’ lead to 99-95, but the Mavericks responded. Doncic took advantage of a screen by Dereck Lively II and hit a 3-pointer to put Dallas up 104-95 with nine minutes remaining. The Thunder never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

“We’ve got a really good opponent that played really well tonight,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “We tried to scrap back into it. I thought our effort was really good tonight. I thought we tried to gear it up a couple different times. I thought where we left something to be desired was execution.”

Playoff Takeaways: Rangers stay unbeaten in post-season, take 3-0 stranglehold on Hurricanes

The New York Rangers took a stranglehold on the Carolina Hurricanes with a 3-0 lead in their second-round series thanks to a 3-2 overtime win on Thursday night.

It was an absolute heartbreaker for the Hurricanes, who tied things up with 1:36 to go in the third period, to the absolute delight of their raucous home crowd in Raleigh. But fewer than two minutes into overtime, Artemi Panarin deflected one in to give New York the win, sucking the air out of PNC Arena.

This is the seventh straight win for New York, who are perfect these playoffs after sweeping Washington in Round 1.

Carolina badly outshot New York for the third straight game, and got nothing in return for its efforts. Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin was again his team’s best player.

Here are our takeaways from New York’s incredible seventh straight playoff win:

Good start for the Canes, Guentzel heating up

This game felt promising for Carolina early on, and it was Jake Guentzel who gave the Hurricanes the 1-0 lead midway through the first, tipping in a Dmitry Orlov point shot.

The Caniac fans lost it and the smoke machines went off after that, and PNC Arena was rocking.

The 29-year-old Guentzel is heating up, as he’s been known to do this time of year, with three goals in the last two games. He now has 65 points in 65 career playoff games.

Bad blood

There was a bit of an on-ice rumble late in the first, and it resulted in four penalties — two for each team.

It started when Rangers centre Barclay Goodrow skated in hard and gave Hurricanes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov a poke on the glove, and that set everybody off. Jimmy Vesey went after Orlov. Goodrow starting yapping at the Hurricanes bench, who had plenty to say back. A bunch of skirmishes went on, and then Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Vesey threw their gloves down to fight, but the refs quickly broke that up.

During a TV timeout, Hurricanes defender Tony DeAngelo dropped his gloves while he was standing in front of his bench, yelling at a bunch of Rangers standing in front of their bench.

Tensions were high.

Big test for Kochetkov

After two straight losses to open this series, the Hurricanes opted to give Frederik Andersen a rest, and turned to Kochetkov.

It marked Kochetkov’s first game this post-season, and his second playoff start ever. The 24-year-old Russian netminder hadn’t started a game since April 14.

He wasn’t tested a whole lot early, but Kochetkov came up with some big saves in the game, including a beautiful poke-check on Filip Chytil, who returned to New York’s lineup after being out with an injury since January.

Kochetkov gave his team a chance to win on Thursday, and had 22 saves in the loss.

Shorty equalizer

As if the Hurricanes power play wasn’t woeful enough — 0-14 in this series so far — the Rangers tied things up in the second period while a man down.

Off a broken play, Mika Zibanejad picked up the puck off the boards and headed up the left wing, while Chris Kreider drove to the net like a rocket. Zibanejad hit him with a nice little saucer pass, which Kreider deflected off his backhand to beat Kochetkov five-hole.

Kreider then launched himself into the glass in celebration — a 32-inch vertical, as measured by Sportsnet’s Hockey Central panel. None of the Carolina fans in those front rows liked that jump one bit.

Kreider now has three goals in the last two games.

Quick release go-ahead goal

Panarin fought off a check and managed to shovel a backhand pass over to Alexis Lafreniere, and the 22-year-old got his wrist shot off immediately, firing it through the legs of the defender, and into the top corner, glove side, to give the Rangers their first lead in this game, 6:25 into the third.

Svechnikov pounced on a rebound in the slot and beat Svechnikov on the blocker side, sending those fans into an absolute tizzy and eventually sending this game into overtime.

Breadman the OT hero

Last game’s hero in double-OT, Vincent Trochek, picked up a rim around the boards and dished it over to Panarin, and with a quick deflection, that was that. This one was over just 1:43 into overtime.

Panarin ran on the ice, then pretended to kick a field goal just before his teammates covered him with hugs.
