Mid-Major+ User Poll: End of Season Final Poll

Seattle Sport News Reddit - Tue, 04/16/2024 - 03:08

Rankings of teams in all conferences excluding the ACC, B10, B12, BE, P12 & SEC

With the new conference realignments, this year's poll will now include the AAC for 2023-24.

The Mid-major+ poll highlights the best teams from all the conferences that don’t receive the media coverage top tier conferences usually do. It is currently dubbed Mid-Major+ for lack of a perfect title, recognizing that Mid-Major is not an official term used by the NCAA and is not interpreted the same by all. The “+” denotes that this poll includes under its umbrella teams/conferences that aren't unanimously referred to as mid-major. "Mid-Major" has different meanings across different sports for men and women. Unless the term is given a concrete designation, it will probably remain a contentious subject indefinitely. The primary purpose of this poll is for starting conversations about the teams themselves, not the concept of a mid-major. Remember have fun and be courteous to others!

Phish

Phish, Friday 04/16/2004 (20 years ago) Thomas& Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV, USA

Gap Chart, Tour: 2004 Vegas Run

Set 1 : Seven Below , Rock and Roll > Boogie On Reggae Woman , Back on the Train -> Possum , Strange Design , Gumbo , Brian and Robert > Taste

Set 2 : Gotta Jibboo , Twist , Camel Walk > Wilson -> The Little Drummer Boy > Wilson , Hold Your Head Up > Love You 1 > Hold Your Head Up > Waves > Lifeboy > The Horse > Silent in the Morning > Loving Cup

Encore : Harry Hood

1 Fish on the sonic dress.

Jamchart Notes:

Rock and Roll - Jam mellows after a bit and sustains a decent pulse with nice Page work. "Low Rider" teases.

Back on the Train - Well played, extended outro jam with good segue (->) into "Possum."

Gotta Jibboo - Sloppy and takes time to peak, but when the band finally comes together and eventually peaks it's a gorgeous moment of clarity that cuts through everything and makes things happy for a minute, before getting goregously goopy and grimy like only '04 can.

Twist - Exploratory and multi-faceted jam emerges around 8:00 after some nice variations on the "Twist" theme. Intense, the jam includes power rocking, distortion and effects, and builds to a furious peak before returning to "Twist."

Wilson - Trey's voice is pretty beat, but he quickly gets into a twisted, chaotic, octave-hopping, 2.0-style, shoegazey mode, as Mike stretches the groove out over snappy Fishman fills.

The Little Drummer Boy - In the chaos that usually precedes "BLAT BOOM", Trey leads the band into a "Little Drummer Boy" vamp, at first festive, and soon going down a more evil path in a minor key, desert rock mood over droning church organs while a quiet, but harsh loop sounds throughout.

Wilson - Trey "BLAT BOOMs" his way out of Little Drummer Boy to conclude a unique version of Wilson.

Harry Hood - This "Hood" shifts to a rocking "Type II" groove at 8:45, briefly returns to "Hood," then departs into a dark, rhythmic minor mode section before finally coming home to close around 17:25.

Show Notes:

Fenton Williams sat in for Chris Kuroda on lights. Camel Walk contained Wilson and Theme from Barney Miller teases. Little Drummer Boy appeared for the first time since December 2, 1999 (116 shows). Love You had Fish "playing" his new sonic dress, a garment woven from cassette tape that produced noise when touched with special gloves akin to tape heads.

Phish, Saturday 04/16/1994 (30 years ago) Mullins Center, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA, USA

Gap Chart, Tour: 1994 Spring Tour

Set 1 : Runaway Jim , Fee 1 , Axilla (Part II) 2 > Rift , Stash , Fluffhead , Nellie Kane > Run Like an Antelope 3

Set 2 : Sample in a Jar , Poor Heart > Tweezer -> The Lizards , Julius , Bouncing Around the Room , You Enjoy Myself -> The Vibration of Life -> You Enjoy Myself , The Squirming Coil , Tweezer Reprise

Encore : Fire

1 Trey sang verses through megaphone.
2 Debut.
3 Simpsons signal.

Jamchart Notes:

Fee - Trey and Page carry the lead while the rhythm section starts and stops several times before grinding to a halt.

Stash - Jam breaks into an upbeat, melodic but intense groove. Then, nasty old "Stash" makes a roaring comeback.

Run Like an Antelope - Bad-Ass jam with power jamming, rhythmic shifts, and more. Fish rocks. The jam winds down instead of peaking.

Show Notes:

Trey sang the verses of Fee through a megaphone. This show included the debut of Axilla (Part II). Antelope included Nellie Kane teases from Trey and Mike and a Simpsons signal. In Trey's place, Brad Sands was the substitute trampoline jumper during YEM. Coil contained a Thank You tease from Page.

Phish, Friday 04/16/1993 (31 years ago) The Macauley Theater, Louisville, KY, USA

Gap Chart, Tour: 1993 Winter/Spring Tour

Set 1 : Chalk Dust Torture , Guelah Papyrus , Sparkle > Split Open and Melt , Esther > Llama , Sample in a Jar , Rift , Harry Hood 1 , Cavern

Set 2 : Axilla , The Curtain > Maze , The Lizards , Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove , The Horse 2 > Silent in the Morning , Uncle Pen , Big Ball Jam > Hold Your Head Up > Bike > Hold Your Head Up , Highway to Hell

Encore : Gumbo , Amazing Grace

1 Simpsons signal.
2 Trey on acoustic guitar.

Jamchart Notes:

Weekapaug Groove - The jam quickly moves beyond the standard into exploratory '93 territory, with Page, Mike and Trey mixing it up in the quiet section, which reduces down to little more than a quiet pulse, before rebuilding in a thrilling, powerful and electrified manner and returning to "Weekapaug."

Gumbo - Short jam, but a dramatic, extended ending with screaming. Highly entertaining for a short version.

Show Notes:

Before Chalk Dust, Trey chided Fish for being late. Melt contained an 1812 Overture tease from Mike. Hood included a Simpsons signal. The Horse featured Trey on acoustic guitar. Trey teased Taps in Big Ball Jam. Trey dedicated Highway to Hell to Terry, the equipment truck driver. Gumbo was played for the first time since July 25, 1991 (229 shows) and contained a Free Bird-style ending.

Phish, Thursday 04/16/1992 (32 years ago) Anaconda Theatre, Isla Vista, CA, USA

Gap Chart, Tour: 1992 Spring Tour

Set 1 : Buried Alive > Possum 1 , It's Ice > Bouncing Around the Room , Split Open and Melt , Rift , Fee -> Maze , Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird > Icculus > Fly Famous Mockingbird > Run Like an Antelope

Set 2 : Sanity , Llama , The Lizards , Mike's Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove , Horn > Poor Heart , Cold as Ice > Terrapin 2 > Cold as Ice , Carolina 3 , Memories 3 , Sweet Adeline 3 , Suzy Greenberg

Encore : Sleeping Monkey

1 Random Laugh, Simpsons, Oom Pa Pa, and All Fall Down signals.
2 Band and crew introductions from Fish.
3 Without microphones.

Jamchart Notes:

Possum - > in from "Buried Alive." Smoking hot jam plus signals that were customary in this period.

It's Ice - Following "Buried Alive" and a smoking "Possum" opening this show, this excellent version keeps the joint rocking.

Run Like an Antelope - Dissonant, intense and tension-filled jam with a scorching hot peak.

Llama - Extra jamming from Page and Trey. Recording has the bass cranked up, so check out the Mike action - sweet!

Mike's Song - More great Mike early in the 1st jam. When Trey jumps in, he begins with rocking/dissonant play, which was typical in this period. Then his play gets more melodic, before jacking up the tension and dissonance again. The 2nd jam is short but pretty cool and rocking. Go Mike!

Weekapaug Groove - Unusually restrained, sublime and enchanting playing by Trey. Mike is louder in the mix, and this interesting combination makes for a spellbinding version.

Show Notes:

Possum included Random Laugh, Simpsons, Oom Pa Pa, and All Fall Down signals. Mockingbird contained Harpua teases from Mike. This version of Icculus (the first since April 6, 1991, or 118 shows) was, perhaps, the shortest version ever as it did not contain the usual build-up and screaming. Icculus was subsequently teased in the second Mockingbird. Antelope contained a We're Off to See the Wizard tease from Trey. Terrapin included band and crew introductions from Fish. Carolina through Sweet Adeline were performed without microphones. Widespread Panic opened.

Encore : Hold Your Head Up > If I Only Had a Brain > Hold Your Head Up , Good Times Bad Times

1 Debut.
2 Paul Guinness on trombone.

Show Notes:

This show featured the debut of Band/Crew Football Theme Song, which was performed as a demented version of Barracuda (by the band Heart) played over the drumbeat for My Sweet One, with Trey mincingly whining the "Crew football theme song!" lyrics. Magilla featured Paul Guinness of Ryth McFeud on trombone. Tweezer contained Walk This Way and Yield Not to Temptation teases. Brain was performed as a "special treat" for the audience. Fish sang the final verse through the vacuum, creating an excellent echo effect. Ryth McFeud was the opening act.

Recent trends for trading back in the 1st round of the draft (2021-2023)

Seattle Sport News Reddit - Mon, 04/15/2024 - 22:43

Wherever there's discussion of draft predictions, there's some speculation that the Seahawks trade back. A lot of justification is that they could recoup the perceived loss of their 2024 2nd round pick in exchange for Leo Williams from the Giants for half the 2023 season on a vet min deal. There's also an argument that there is a team need for safeties and off-ball linebackers with the departure of Diggs/Adams/Brooks, and that the "positional value" of these positions is such that it is most efficient to take the first prospects around the start of the 2nd round.

Podcasts and other media also tend to assume that by trading back Seattle can get an extra pick to fill these needs. Regardless of if you think this is the right strategy or not- and we'll find out what John thinks in 2 weeks- I wanted to calculate what an actual trade could be expected to look like. Not using simulators, but instead by looking back at actual draft history.

I started with all trades in the last 3 years where a team traded away its first-round pick in order to move down. I excluded the following:

  • Trades that occurred prior to draft night (e.g. the recent Vikings-Texans trade)
  • Trades that included current players
  • Trades that included future trade capital (e.g. [Current Year] pick in exchange for a 2025 1st)

Trades from a position similar to the Seahawks' are highlighted in Green. Calculated value is from ESPN's Draft Pick Value Table.

In regards to the preconceived idea that they specifically want a 2nd rounder, the first thing that stood out to me is that very rarely are teams trading anything other than 3rd/4th/5th round picks in order to move around within the 1st. 2nd round picks were only ever included in exchange for other 2nd rounders. Additionally, very rarely do teams trade out of the 1st altogether!

I was surprised to see that the value of the trades according to the table was remarkably consistent regardless of the difference in 1st rounders (i.e. whether from 12nd to 32nd, or from 24th to 25th, where they're clearly trading for 1 particular player) or the position within the 1st round (i.e. trades within the top 15 used the same value formula as trades within the bottom 17)

R-squared close to 1 indicates that the trades were almost exactly fair according to ESPN's value chart.

While I did not look much earlier than 2021, I should note that there were no other trades within the 1st round in 2020 nor 2019 that resulted in the team trading back to receive a 1st and 2nd in return while meeting the criteria above. There was one close case: In 2019, Denver traded back from 10th overall to 20th in exchange for Pittsburgh's picks 20, 52, AND a future 2020 3rd rounder. Pittsburgh used that pick on Devin Bush.

So what does this mean if Seattle wants to trade back?

The simplest conclusion is that, if Seattle decides to trade down from 16th overall, they will likely receive no better than a number of 3rd/4th round picks and no more, even if they include their next highest pick- 3rd round 81st overall- in such a trade.

If the trends above show that the value chart is accurate, then we can see what the value of a single additional pick would be in return, even if it's against recent precedent:

Variance was the average of the noted variances in the table above. e.g. Trading back from pick 16 to 32 would net between the 47th and 51st overall pick on average.

So, trading back to around pick 26-32 to get an extra pick in the bottom half of the 2nd round wouldn't contradict the established pick values. However, I want to re-emphasize that recent history contradicts this.

Last year, John Boyle reported on the Seahawks website that Schneider had a "first round grade" on four players by the time they picked JSN at 20, and one last similar grade player in Derick Hall at 37. I imagine GMs might rarely be targeting a single player so much that they would be willing to pass up on one or even two other highly graded players just to move up and get them. I don't want to speculate much at all, but whatever the reason, that seems to be the statistical trend.

How often do teams trade back up using 3rd round picks or later?

I think this is relevant to address whether 3rd-round picks received from moving back within the 1st could be used to later obtain a 2nd. It doesn't happen very often- the majority of trades within the 2nd round since 2021 were exchanging 2nds for another 2nd + 4th/5th, but it has occurred at the end of the round.

2023:

  • Texans Receive: 2.62 // Eagles Receive: 3.65 + 6.188 + 7.230
  • Broncos Receive: 2.63 // Chiefs Receive: 3.68 + 5.138

2022:

  • Texans Receive: 2.44 // Browns Receive: 3.68 + 4.108 + 4.124

No such trades in 2021! This reinforces the idea that Seattle will likely not be picking in the 2nd this year unless they trade out of the 1st entirely, or give up future picks (rare for the league, let alone JS).

Who would they stay in place for in 2024?

I'll try to remain objective while looking at whether trading back should still be expected when they're on the clock on draft night. First of all, what is the philosophy on trading back at all? It's not as simple as "BPA vs Need." As John discussed on Seattle Sports Radio on March 21st:

Really, you don't go need until you're towards the end of the draft... At that point- sixth, seventh round- let's go with need and what your numbers look like at different positions based on what the draft has looked like so far.

Sometimes we'll move if we have a player that's rated higher. We don't grade for the league, we grade for our team. So, that grade is incorporated with need.

Regardless of whatever individual exceptions you might find (we'll never know, maybe Schneider thought Collier would be better than he was!), if we go by this idea of "BPA, but adjust for specific team fits," then it holds that they will likely find themselves with a number of "great" players available, but the possibility to trade back and still get one of those options.

Using NFL Mock Draft Database's consensus big board, here are players that are ordered around #8-#36 best, which is a window that Seattle could reasonably move around in, with extra wiggle room to account for how these are rarely truly accurate to actual drafts.

Players that have reportedly met with the Seahawks at a Top-30 visit/Combine/Pro Day/Senior Bowl/etc are highlighted. Blue highlight indicates they are within an arbitrary 8-rank variance of Seattle's initial pick at 16, and are projected less likely to be available if trading back.

A number of defensive picks they've met with and many more projected players could be available at 16 but gone if they trade back more than a few spaces. There's nothing definitive to conclude from this sort of chart, except the very general notion that this is the range of players that JS will be looking at and thinking "If I move back, it is almost certain that we can get one of these highlighted guys; but, there are 31 other teams that are picking or able to trade back into the first. Is an extra 3rd or 4th rounder worth letting them pick for me?"

I think everyone has different opinions on what "should" be done especially with the ambiguity of a new head coach, new offensive coordinator, and varying opinions on player abilities. Ultimately, with so many great prospects in the 1st but only one pick, there's always going to be a bitter taste at passing up half a dozen of them, as every team does. I just hope that this sort of glance at recent trade history in this peculiar situation Seattle is in might guide expectations leading up to draft night.
